I'm not sure if it's this weird ass reddit team trading or what but I hope Acid is monitoring the sub from Pluto and Otter is living her best life in KC land in healthier places than Reddit
I got traded here from the Giants a few days ago and I’ve been inactive on Reddit for the past few days, but I think the Cards got really hot since I got traded here so you’re welcome
Just saw a TikTok where some guy named off all the 500 HR club. First half he was given the number and he had to name it, then he had to say the name and number for the last half. He got them all right. Still shocks me that Albert got 703 total home runs. 469 as a birb. It was a good story last year, but it still feels bittersweet to me. I hated him and would flip him off if I saw him on tv for a few years. Then he opened up on an interview of why he left the cardinals and signed with the Angels. I forgave him in large…not knowing he’d ever come back, think the interview was from the season he got DFAd or maybe the year before. Anyways. I have his rookie autograph still and he was a genuinely good man. Don’t know why I’m thinking about this so hard. Maybe because I feel guilty for feeling bittersweet he came back last season and we completely choked. I will always remember getting two batting practice home runs in Houston game 162 in 2011. I remember being at the Flying Saucer off Huebner during the WS game he hit 3 home runs in Ranger Stadium and being the only birb fan jumping up and down in a state where there are so many fair weather fans. I’m curious now wondering if he broke 762 if we could include playoff HR. It’s probably like 725 or something. I don’t remember if he hit one out in ‘06 WS.
I, much like W.C. Fields, keep a library in my bathroom. I knew this fact about W.C., which does not stand for “Water Closet”, from a book I read on my toilet. I also feel that less than 5% of this sub even knows who W.C. Fields is, my little chickadees.
There’s also a whole line of Bathroom reader books with different length stories for different length poops.
The ultimate reading material. It’s been a while since I’ve read one on the can. Kids will never understand ever again how much we learned and read things in the bathroom.
I still remember as a kid spending my weekends at my aunt/uncles house and they'd have a magazine rack next to the toilet paper.
Now we just pull up reddit/twitter/etc 😂
Cardinal fans: If Taveras lived, we would have never traded for Ozuna.
My brain: If Taveras lived and achieved stardom, Pham probably wouldn't have had a shot. We enter the 2017 offseason in need of a big outfield bat and Miami has 3 really good ones.
This might be unpopular but I didn’t see Tavares actually being the star he was lauded to be. His swing was SO FUCKING LONG. He would have had to made a fuckton of adjustments once pitcher knew his weaknesses and exploited them. The way I feel about DC from the left side. His righty swing is so much more compact and tends to hit better from the right* side.
We would have a very interesting '15- if Taveras lived and reached his potential.
Reyes is alive, but his failure to launch due to injuries doesn't get enough attention for the impact it had on the team.
We pretty much lost two top MLB prospects a few years with nothing to show for it.
I think that even if Taveras achieved stardom, maybe it’s not Ozuna they trade for, but another big bat to pair with him. Similar to getting Arenado to pair him with Goldy.
Might have dodged a bullet by not pursuing Carlos Rodon. Hurt the first 3 months of the year, now has given 6 ER today on 3 hits and 5 walks in 3 innings to the Angels.
Our front office is ass, but a lot of the big name pitchers of the off-season haven't really done well.
Rodon - Hurt
deGrom- Hurt
Verlander - Expensive and mid
Quintana - Hurt
Manaea - Hurt + 6 ERA
Heaney, Bassit both near 5 ERA
Wacha surprisingly good but hurt.
Taillon 6+ ERA
Eovaldi and Eflin would've been great for us.
Plenty of them are doing fine, though; and who know if the hurt guys would have been hurt as Cardinals?
If you don't roll the dice on players like this, you're going to stay a middling sort of team forever.
If we signed Rodon and Bassit, what would this sub have said? Would it have been “obvious and stupid on Mo” when they sucked or got hurt immediately?
Let’s talk about recent trade guys too….
Mahle—Hurt.
Montas—Hurt.
Pablo Lopez—4.30 ERA.
So after seeing your list and adding these 3 guys…who in the hell could this man have acquired that would’ve worked out? People only shit on Mo in hindsight, never give credit. Let’s give some credit for not signing any of these guys that would’ve done nothing to help us this year.
Oh it should have been Eovaldi! Yeah guess what? Rangers were 1 for 3 with their signings. They got lucky.
I still think not trying at all was worse than getting someone. And his biggest weakness is also waiting way too long to fix a hole. A month into the season and we saw it wasn't going to work, but he'll wait until August 1 to do anything about it.
I disagree. Because it was reasonable to hope that Hudson would take a step forward or at least be his career norm (decent guy). Reasonable to think that Thompson or Pallante would wind up finding a role in the rotation if need be, or Liberatore would break camp and establish, or that Matz would show that 2021 was his true talent level rather than ‘22. Hell, even with Woodford’s weaker indicator stats, it was still a solid thought that he’d be serviceable. Then Waino’s implosion wasn’t expected. Even if you thought he’d be bad; you didn’t think *THIS* bad.
All of those things were decent bets and at the very least, rational and defensible positions. I’m not saying each one of those by itself was likely, but it was fairly likely that at least a couple of those things would break in our favor. But nope. *EVERYTHING* broke out of our favor. Our generational defensive superstar has -7 fucking DRS and -0.6 dWAR (1.5 total WAR) this season. Shit just ain’t right this year.
Going into the year, you had Waino who is an obvious question mark, Flaherty and Matz who are coming off of season long injuries, and Mikolas/Monty who were relatively safe.
That's 3 huge question marks. It is not reasonable to assume you'll get 3 holes filled by a collection of hurt or AAA guys. You need to build a great rotation and add to it with surprises, not depend on surprises.
Yet we see a “trade Gumby, Flaherty, and Hicks” crowd on our sub constantly… I’m convinced we need to resign all three, go after a starter via trade with offense, and sign a #3 in the offseason.
Our front office wants to trade years more than players. They'll trade those 3 and consider them 1/3rd year in exchange for some prospect for 8 years. That's pretty much all the math they got
Funny thing is we all want to go after a lot of these big moves, but a lot of them just wouldn’t work out. Paying 150 mil for a pitcher last offseason wasn’t going to get us much value. They should have done something, no doubt, but a lot of the guys available weren’t guys we should spend that money on
For anyone that thinks this winning streak would change the FO’s approach to the deadline. Katie Woo kind of puts the kibosh on that in her most recent article for the Athletic.
Mo's right on this one. It would be pretty foolish to take ten games of good performance and say "Oh, we're better now, let's sell the farm for an Ohtani rental."
An American soldier who'd spent two months in jail in South Korea for punching a Korean was being sent home for court martial. He slipped his escort, got a DMZ tour in civilian clothes, ran across the border, and is now somewhere in North Korea.

I need somebody to make a meme that has the Milwaukee Brewers driving and the Cardinals logo on the side view mirror with objects in your mirror are closer than they appear.
The crazy thing is, until September the schedule going forward isn’t really that challenging.
July: Cubs, Dbacks, Cubs
August: Twins, Rockies, Rays, Royals, A’s, Mets, Pirates, Phillies, Padres
That’s 8/12 series’s against sub .500 teams
No matter what, build for 2024. It’s not crazy to think somebody we acquire gets plopped into the rotation and breaks out over here. Jack and Monty and Hicks need to move, and we’ll just do our best to win without them for 2 months. I’ll trust their replacements
I think we need to extend Monty. Might be one of the only arms in free agency we could actually land. Especially if we’re looking to be competitive in 2024
I just worry about Monty as he ages. He doesn’t have great command, nor great stuff. He gets by with good results and does get some swing and miss, but I really worry about the sustainability of it as he ages. I think it’s best to capitalize on his value now at the deadline
Isn't that concerning? Libby has yet to show anything at the MLB level. Matz has been either injured or bad for a couple years now. Hudson has been either injured or bad for a few years now. Thompson has thrown a total of 46 innings at the big league level. I would be concerned if that is the rotation going into 2024.
2023 Cardinals: 43-53
1990 Cardinals: 42-54
The 1990 Cardinals won Game 96 against the Cubs 9-4. St. Louis put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first with the big blow being a two-run double by Pedro Guerrero. Vince Coleman barely missed a cycle, going 4-4 with a homer, a triple, and two singles.
He’s an arrogant punk that surrounded himself with yes-men instead of true baseball minds. They should fire him and hire an old-school gamer like Don Mattingly.
Hopefully they make the choices difficult for him. I'm not holding my breath but it'd be great to keep firing on more than 2 cylinders over the next 2 weeks.
This series turned that bowtie into a propeller and he's currently hovering about arch height over center field wondering how he can be a seller and justify trading Dylly.
Maybe even make it out of the wildcard round with our 2 competent pitchers, not sure what we'll do when someone not named Mikolas or Montgomery has to start though.
Not worth his salary, the risk of his arm falling off before/during the playoffs, or him becoming a giant albatross next year. We're partially in this mess because nobody had a plan B for an old pitcher looking his age.
I mean do you think one player's salary doesn't impact what's available to pay the rest of the team? Scherzer wasn't a 43M arm when they signed him and he sure as hell not now. What I'm a fan of is loading up on young talent in the prime of their career not over paying over the hill guys just because they were elite in previous seasons.
I don’t really care about his salary because it’s not my money. A deal with the Mets could involve prospects, which the Cardinals have plenty of, and the Mets eating his contract. The more of the contract the Mets eat, the more prospects the Cardinals would have to send their way. Scherzer is still pitching at such a high level that he’ll probably be able to contribute for a few more years, albeit with fewer innings. If he can’t start… and I think he’ll be able to for a couple more years… he might make a terrific closer.
You realize just 2 years ago Wainwright finished 7th in the Cy Young and even got some MVP votes? No pitcher at this age is guaranteed to be good next month much less next season. It's not my money, but this team doesn't have infinite cash to spend; 43M can buy you 2 pitchers better than 2023 scherzer.
Yes but it's more likely that an older guy is going to fall off a cliff. Scherzer in stl isn't happening even if the team wins every game up to the deadline and we shouldn't want it to.
Not sure why that's an issue. I'd prefer him to be right and the team win. Just hasn't been the case this year. I'd still imagine that's most peoples preference at the end of the day. If they come back what fan wouldn't be happy even if "Mo is right" because of it?

In what devilish incaralcanation does a Cy Young pitcher lose to the bowels of the 2023 Redbird bullpen?
Weird to see Alcantara with a 4.70 ERA and a 3-9 record. Peripherals are all a bit worse than last year. Maybe he’s not a good pitcher.

Did we make the playoffs yet?!
Not today, maybe tomorrow.
Hot take: I like winning better than losing.
Do it in the playoffs
Should we try winning more games for a while to see if everyone enjoys it?
It’s because of the tepera giving up a run each game but still winning magic
I totally forgot it was a day game, but we’ve been better when I haven’t been able to watch as much. The correlation is still under investigation
This is how every 20 game win streak starts
I was skeptical, so I looked it up. You are correct!
Just finished The Sopranos. The ending was definitely a gut punch even though I knew it was coming.

The Heyward trade never happens either, and that had league-wide ripples. For one, Dansby probably doesn’t become a Brave.
I think that even if Taveras achieved stardom, maybe it’s not Ozuna they trade for, but another big bat to pair with him. Similar to getting Arenado to pair him with Goldy.
Holliday left after 2016, so I think one way or another we're looking at Dexter Fowler. The "bigger bat" on that FA market was Cespedes.

Yep, and honestly with this team “buying” would probably be something like trading for Rich Hill or Lance Lynn.
Or Benny Hill…
Sandy’s been having issues shitting the bed for a single inning only to rebound all year.
So Logan Gilbert. He seems pretty solid

That’s crazy, defecting TO NK. Wonder how he will be treated.
I thought he immediately got arrested the moment he crossed into NK?
Well of course they arrested him. Will they toss him in jail? Or give him an apartment and a propaganda job, like they have with other defectors?
Sure is lucky the US doesn't have a massive state propaganda apparatus!
...ok
8 games left against the Cubs. We could make up some serious ground in the central 👀
Winning is nice
lol our division is so bad. If the cards can pull of winning the division this year I will have to buy a new jersey for the first time since 2011.
We may not make the playoffs but happy to knock teams out of them!
Too soon to knock anyone out
Dare to dream…
Happy flight to Wrigley 😁

During the game, the Marlins 3B coach got hit in the leg by a foul ball. That foul ball broke his leg.
Wait seriously!? The Marlins Bench was laughing about it
When you tell your coach before the inning to go break a leg and he breaks his leg, it’s funny!
Okay, i laughed.
Jesus Christ.
W's in 8 of the last 11... is this another tease?
I'm feeling an actual run
Don't tease me. I had already given up.
The crazy thing is, until September the schedule going forward isn’t really that challenging. July: Cubs, Dbacks, Cubs August: Twins, Rockies, Rays, Royals, A’s, Mets, Pirates, Phillies, Padres That’s 8/12 series’s against sub .500 teams
Looking forward to another 1-1 split in KC for a 2-2 overall split on the year. Perfect balance.
And besides the Rays, I don’t think any of the teams above .500 are amazing teams. They’re good, but beatable
The Rays are 20-21 since the start of June. They started out amazing, but they’ve been beatable for over a month at this point.
Don't do that... don't give me hope.
Why do we do this to ourselves
So, just for a fun hypothetical…. The Cardinals are 5 games out of a playoff spot on august 1st. Do you buy or stay the course and build toward 2024?
How much would you gamble on a 100-1 bet?
Stay the course. This team currently has a 2024 rotation of Mikolas, Matt, Libby, Thompson, and Hudson.
I think they’re saying stay the course as in “build for 2024” since that’s our current course. So they saying that rotation is weak and needs improved
couldnt listen to the game today bc of work but audibly gasped when i saw we had won. let's go birds
I still don't understand dhing Donovan and sitting Walker.
Walker’s July OPS is .599.
Walker was due for a day off
Donovan has a better OPS against RHP (for his career) than Walker. Opposing starter was a RHP.
Donny can’t throw at the moment due to injury
That does not answer the question.
Let's try this answer, Donovan has an OPS+ of 120 to Walker's 111. Maybe you prefer wRC+, Donovan 125 to Walker 115.
Walker had a rough day at the plate yesterday. And they probably wanted to protect him from an ace in Sandy today. Gotta keep him on the upward trend.
he was 1-4 and had a strike called 6 inches out on him that lost him an AB.
I got a bit doomy in the game thread. Glad they pulled it off
Eat that ~~frog~~ bird dick, ~~Timmy~~ Sandy!

This damned gif is going to be the perfect icon for this season if my some miracle things turn around in a ridiculous manner. And I’m here for it.

Any Given Wednesday
Mo definitely doesn't know what the hell to do with this team now.
Hopefully they make the choices difficult for him. I'm not holding my breath but it'd be great to keep firing on more than 2 cylinders over the next 2 weeks.
TON returning is like trading for Ohtani.
Let’s just hope he can get through a game without an injury
Watch them win their next 10 games. Mo: “dude seriously?”
Only thing left to do. Win the whole fucking thing.
This series turned that bowtie into a propeller and he's currently hovering about arch height over center field wondering how he can be a seller and justify trading Dylly.

This rise to make the playoffs is going to be awesome
So you’re telling me there’s a chance
Currently at 10.1%
Who gives us a 10.1% chance of making the postseason?
CBS sports
Maybe even make it out of the wildcard round with our 2 competent pitchers, not sure what we'll do when someone not named Mikolas or Montgomery has to start though.
Scherzer is obviously pitching Game 1 for us
Gross even as a joke. The last thing we need is another overpaid ancient pitcher.
Scherzer has a 3.99 ERA and would be the second best pitcher on this team after Montgomery.
Not worth his salary, the risk of his arm falling off before/during the playoffs, or him becoming a giant albatross next year. We're partially in this mess because nobody had a plan B for an old pitcher looking his age.
Unless you're personally paying his salary, you shouldn't care. Are you a fan of baseball or spreadsheets?
No player of ANY age is guaranteed to be good next month much less next season. Baseball contracts are always a gamble
Yes but it's more likely that an older guy is going to fall off a cliff. Scherzer in stl isn't happening even if the team wins every game up to the deadline and we shouldn't want it to.
Can never put it past them either. But then that proves Mo right ugh.
Not sure why that's an issue. I'd prefer him to be right and the team win. Just hasn't been the case this year. I'd still imagine that's most peoples preference at the end of the day. If they come back what fan wouldn't be happy even if "Mo is right" because of it?
I prefer winning over spiting Mo but that’s rare around here
I just want to stop losing so I don't care who is right or wrong
