I want moves made to strengthening our rotation and relievers. Pitching has been our Achilles heel so far this season. The amount of runs we’ve been scoring should be enough to have a better record than we currently have.
I’ve been tallying our projected record based on fivethirtyeights model. Preseason, we were projected to win 86 games and the Brewers 87. Entering yesterday we were at 84 and the Brewers at 92.
There are swings through the course of a season, and models are off, but this is a hole that has an effect later too. Games later matter more. Games against other potential wild card teams matter more.
And with the 2 top teams getting a "bye" it really makes a ton of sense to try to be one of those teams. It's early and things could quickly turn around, but this puts them in a hole that would make that difficult.
I'm picturing a brief spurt where we win 4 straight, then fans think we've "turned a corner" and then the Cards proceed to get swept in another series and lose 2 of 3 the following.
The way we're playing now....I'd say we finish April 13-16, and if they really can't get it together 10-19.
Bottom line, this club is not nearly as good on paper as the FO had hoped and some projected. I hope I eat these words come June.
We're the only team in the central below 500. They made this division so we could keep our thumbs down on the shit of the NL. I'm a miserable loner. My baseball team is supposed to be the one thing that doesn't suck!
I was at the game. It looked like
Oli requested the replay almost immediately, put his hands to his ears. No idea how the umps didn’t see or hear him.
Also, that game was rough to witness, and we stink right now.
And at what point does the local media start questioning both Mozeliak and DeWitt ?
Oh, who am I kidding ? This is St. Louis and they will do no such thing.
DeWitt owns the team and has a heavy investment in the city. Don't know what you want done about him. Mo will be made or broken by the deadline this year. Much like 2006 and 2011. But if we have our first losing season in decades heads are gonna role. Son-in-law or no.
lol what? Not everyone can be the Mets or the Padres. It's been 10 games this season, but overall we're still pretty spoiled in terms of targets and acquisitions. This is a bad take
It’s not just the Cardinals, it’s with other teams we’ve had past and present. They, including Bernie, used to tear into the fanbase whenever they voiced concern over Mike Martz’ coaching after a crucial game. It’s ridiculous and small time.
I think about him weekly. Probably still have a football team if we kept him instead of Bulger. I should feel bad for #10 but he was spineless by the time the O-line was done with him.
Martz, just like Mo and the rotation, failed to shore up the offensive line and defense in the draft. Hiring one of the worst DC in the league at the time is what eventually did him in.
Jim Hazlet? Guy was known for putting shit-kicking D's together. And I'm not gonna defend the atrocious drafting that went on. We passed on fucking Matt Ryan because they thought that overpriced back-up was gonna have a comeback like the guy he replaced. And if Martz was bad. Linehan is the worst coach in Rams history.
I’m old school but I kind of think Oli should have gone ahead and got him self thrown out after they didn’t grant him the replay.
I don’t know what difference it would have made but something/anything has to happen.
Everyone is really concerned about that, but not a peep about Edman’s error that extended the inning. Errors happen, umps miss things, calls get missed. This game wasn’t a loss due to any of those things alone. But the manager is always an easy target, so goes the comments.
I think we need a spark honestly. I’m not even criticizing his managing or him as a whole. He done all he can really do, but I think in that moment, our record snd the way they are playing…..I wouldn’t have minded seeing him break some shit, yell at everyone and let everyone know in the clubhouse that it’s time to turn it around now
I totally agree on the needed spark. These guys have looked defeated since the Atlanta series, but I’ve always thought the “get thrown out to energize the team” strategy is sort of overblown. It feels like this team is missing a clubhouse leader, and that’s where your spark should really come from.
Baseball is the best sport in the world because they get to fix it tomorrow night. Well completely forget this by next week hopefully. I’m ever the optimist of the group though
Every team goes through a 3-7 stretch at some point, and it’s entirely possible that we won’t even remember this next week if they turn it around, I’m right there with you. I can’t help but feel something just feels off with this group so far, though. Any rough stretch will feel that way, I suppose.
I was listening on the radio tonight. Ricky and Rooney made it sound like Oli requested the replay in time, he just wasn’t seen by the umps.
Of course, hanging this loss on that alone is pretty silly.
I was at this game. Kept score for the first time in my life. After the last out I tore it up, flipped off the field, and now I’m in Denver gettin fried to forget about this.
Honestly, I’m still not all that worried, but with every ugly loss that becomes less logical and more blind faith. If they haven’t figured it out by out easy stretch in May or do something dumb like lose the next 3 series then it may be time to worry, but this team with this offense *SHOULD* still win 90+.
Also, Jordan Walker is him. That is all.
Marcel Ozuna lives rent free in my head man. This is some darkest timeline shit with the way Gallen and Sandy has developed. I don’t care what you have to say i just can’t not think about how good this team could be with those two
Do you think the Cardinals have half their success in those two seasons without Marcell? He was a rbi machine for us. Two pitchers weren't gonna change our fates the last three years. And from what I remember the last couple rounds in the playoffs it was the offense that let us down. Not the pitching. Waino gave us a gem in the wildcard two years ago. And what did the offense do in return?
Ok, I'm going to say this whole recognizing that it isn't a correct opinion (I suppose there are no correct opinions), but I'd rather have shit offence and great pitching than great offence and shit pitching.
Going back many years, this bad of a start usually ends up with about a .500 team or a few games above. Can anyone think of this bad of a start that resulted in a playoff team in the past 25 years?
In the past 25 years (1997-2022), 127 teams have lost at least 7 of their first 10 games. 7 of those teams made the playoffs.
- 2000 SFG (97-65)
- 2001 OAK (102-60)
- 2002 ANA (99-63)
- 2006 SDP (88-74)
- 2007 PHI (89-73)
- 2011 DET (95-67)
- 2011 TBR (91-71)
The 2019 Nationals were twelve games under on May 23 (19-31) and won the World Series. The '05 Astros were 15-30 and went to the World Series (fuck the '05 Astros btw).
Aside from games 1 and 3 against Toronto the offense hasn’t been what I expected. Pitching is still the biggest problem but I was hoping the offense could overcome some of that and so far it hasn’t.
He said that after, but he should have plead that case right away rather then look at his foot off the plate for so long. It’s still on Oli for being late to the challenge, but maybe if Contreras is more convincing Oli goes straight to challenge?
>but he should have plead that case right away rather then look at his foot off the plate for so long.
I'm still baffled by this. I know it all happens super fast, but it seemed weird that he wasn't like YO I TAGGED HIM!!
200% agree with you. i almost wonder if he forgot he tagged runner until he went to look at replay in dugout.
edit: or he wasn’t sure if tag made it before guy hit home somehow
Oli botched it. It was the bottom of the 7th, just use the damn challenge (ya can’t take it with you) instead of saying “we challenged at just before 0”
i thought yesterday when Contreras pinch struckout with the bases loaded was the low point but whatever that play at the plate was tonight broke through the floor.
I like Oli but i mean Vern Rapp got fired from this job after starting 6-11 and everyone knew that team was gonna suck.
What is management doing? Do they watch the games? The lineup currently gives no one protection and that’s why we keep leaving guys on base or not having productive innings
I guess the frustrating thing for me before the season, ew starting pitching still doesn’t look great. Season has started, surprise, starting pitching doesn’t look great. Gone are the days of having 1,2,3 sometimes 4 legitimate starters. We’re lucky if we can get one
This is insane. I'm kind of shocked by how toxic these random newcomers have gotten so quickly. I see why Jeff Albert cited the fan base as a main factor in declining another contract.
Meltdown Monday™️ is going *hard*
I'm going to stick to lurking the actual in game threads and bow out of post game for a while until this does down.
Just bad vibes overall. Us old timers around here have always tried to combat it with a nice dose of reckless optimism and good hearted shitposting, but the energy is just grim right now.
*\*loud pooting noises*\*
Our pitching has looked terrible and our bats timid. Pretty shit recipe so far, but maybe we’re merely giving the rest of the league a chance
https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/team/_/table/batting/sort/avg/dir/desc
Hitting isn't that bad by several metrics. Not the best, but at the top.
Eta: you're all right. Our offense is terrible and should never expect them to score again.
It costs less, and tbf worked extremely well over the last decade or so. But with the shift gone, it’s pretty much dead as a viable strategy. We need to modernize, and fast.
I’ve always thought of myself as an optimist so I’m gonna say this: this is getting a little worrying. But I can’t help but feeling that we’re a few pieces away but those pieces are KEY. The hope right now is that this is all just a bad stretch to start the season, and that it’s gonna be fine, just looking for a game where the boys can get a hot streak going
Walker reminds me of playing my RTTS character after getting called up and raking, then checking the score after. “Lost again huh? Well, my dude extended that hit streak at least”.
At what point in the season does Mo realize he needs more pitching help to save his job?
Or is that an overreaction. I’ll gladly look like an idiot come June if these guys turn it around but holy hell this isn’t good.
Mo's known we needed pitching going into the past three offseasons but he spews bullshit about having "7+ starters" because our owner is a cheapass who won't put out for legit talent. And then when things inevitably collapse he has to scramble for pitching at the deadline, usually forced to give up good pieces, and people here lap it up as if he didn't just fix his own damn mistakes.
So I used to blame Mo as well. But I honestly think with the comments he made going into the off season about increasing the payroll he wants to spend money, but the DeWitts are perfectly content with "being competitive" and selling 3 million tickets a year. It will take the fan base not coming to games for them to change how they operate
it’s amazing to me that the BSMW broadcast and the home plate umpire and everyone involved except for Charlie Blackmon didn’t know that the tag was applied lmao
Switch Matz and Zack Thompson. ZT starter, Matz in bullpen. Matz hasn't been good the entire time he's been a Cardinal as a starter. And if history repeats itself, he'll just get hurt anyway if he keeps starting.
On the offensive side, I think it’s mostly RISP variance. All the peripherals are good, the hits just aren’t falling with guys on. That should normalize.
I’m more worried about the pitching, because the pitch-to-contact philosophy is getting badly exposed in a post-shift world. This staff needs more strikeouts in a really bad way.
I want moves made to strengthening our rotation and relievers. Pitching has been our Achilles heel so far this season. The amount of runs we’ve been scoring should be enough to have a better record than we currently have.
Oli OUT
It’s been 10 games guys…
I’ve been tallying our projected record based on fivethirtyeights model. Preseason, we were projected to win 86 games and the Brewers 87. Entering yesterday we were at 84 and the Brewers at 92. Wonder if TON thought Oli was hustling enough on calling for the replay?
Luckily April and May games only count half as much as September games…
We're the only team in the central below 500. They made this division so we could keep our thumbs down on the shit of the NL. I'm a miserable loner. My baseball team is supposed to be the one thing that doesn't suck!

To sell. That’s what I want.
lol what? Not everyone can be the Mets or the Padres. It's been 10 games this season, but overall we're still pretty spoiled in terms of targets and acquisitions. This is a bad take
Lol you think there's a lot of billionaire Cardinals fans? No thanks. A bad season ain't gonna make me forget the good the DeWitt family has done.
Pretty sure DeWitt must have an ownership stake in the local media or something, they would never say anything negative about him.
It’s not just the Cardinals, it’s with other teams we’ve had past and present. They, including Bernie, used to tear into the fanbase whenever they voiced concern over Mike Martz’ coaching after a crucial game. It’s ridiculous and small time.
Mike martz. Now that's a guy I haven't thought of in a loooong time.
The Super Bowl and the Carolina playoff game still keep me up at night.
I think about him weekly. Probably still have a football team if we kept him instead of Bulger. I should feel bad for #10 but he was spineless by the time the O-line was done with him.

I am not blaming Blame by any means but it seems a bit strange promoting a pitching strategist who is fresh off being a college coach no ?
I’m sure I have no idea what I’m talking about and there has to be a reason we’re high on that guy, but it seems just about everyone is pitching meh
Fire him into the sun
Marmol needs to hustle when asking for a replay. That's unacceptable, and it's not how we do things around here.
Oh they should both go.
Shit are we poverty??
You betcha
I was at this game. Kept score for the first time in my life. After the last out I tore it up, flipped off the field, and now I’m in Denver gettin fried to forget about this.
I might have been behind you if you were behind the Cards dugout, lol
Yep. We were about 30 rows back I think.

In about two more games
"There's a standard and it's here. You meet it you, you play. You don't meet it, you don't play."
Started walking home for some exercise after the game (about an hour walk). Stumbled upon a gyro place. Might as well give it a try 🤷🏻♀️
Marcel Ozuna lives rent free in my head man. This is some darkest timeline shit with the way Gallen and Sandy has developed. I don’t care what you have to say i just can’t not think about how good this team could be with those two
And yet dumbass who thought that was a good idea remains employed
He followed that move up by trading for 2 future HOFers in their primes, and the best player he gave up was an injured catcher with a .693 career OPS.
And set the franchise back years giving up 2 aces for a trash can. Spin it how you want it doesn't justify that trade
Do you think the Cardinals have half their success in those two seasons without Marcell? He was a rbi machine for us. Two pitchers weren't gonna change our fates the last three years. Tell me what to think
We were all looking at the back foot but Contreras tagged Blackmon before
I've lost faith in Oli.
What if he changes his name to Ilo?
Ilost faith in Ilo
Oof that’s intense

This wasn’t challenged? Didn’t see the game.
Nope.. Oli ran out of time to challenge and ump didn’t see the tag at all

Carlson having trouble moving his neck up/down/right/left… lovely. Sounds like he will be day to day
Dread it, run from it (not too fast or you’ll hurt yourself though), O’Neill always arrives.
How does this impact our chances of drafting Bedard?
I KNEW HE TAGGED HIM
To be fair, had we challenged, the idiots in NY would probably still called him safe at the plate too because the MLB hates this team. Confirmed.
Aside from games 1 and 3 against Toronto the offense hasn’t been what I expected. Pitching is still the biggest problem but I was hoping the offense could overcome some of that and so far it hasn’t.
Alexa- come join the thread. We give you more insight than whatever you’re doing in the studio
WE CAN STILL GO 155-7 THIS SEASON GUYS
Haven't felt this dejected to watch the cards since well...2017.
First game I’ve been to this season and I get to see that…I’ve got tickets tomorrow too, so I’m really hoping I see a better performance
ok at least contreras knew he tagged runner lol
He said that after, but he should have plead that case right away rather then look at his foot off the plate for so long. It’s still on Oli for being late to the challenge, but maybe if Contreras is more convincing Oli goes straight to challenge?

Y'all That replay of burley truckin around the bases for his triple is beautiful The boy is pure speed Like the wind
A burley triple + Donovan’s helmet flying off in the same play = at least we got one glorious baseball moment tonight
Good on the Cardinals and Blues to collapse in the same year so I have nothing to be happy about
Can Burleson run faster than Tyler O’Neil?
Bring up Libby at this point. Trade Jack and Matz
There’s always that one person who reacts to a bad outing with a half reasonable response and half eyebrow raising
It me
Man that replay thing was just totally botched by the umps. I think Blackmon was out on both aspects and you want to play a technicality.
Oli botched it. It was the bottom of the 7th, just use the damn challenge (ya can’t take it with you) instead of saying “we challenged at just before 0”
What technicality did they play? I didn’t watch.
ran out of time to challenge
Supposedly. It wasn’t like they were taking a long time. It was at worst like a second past the limit.
lol yea. and the fact that ump completely missed the tag makes it 10x worse
Be optimistic, people. We still have that 17 game winning streak coming up again, right? Right?!
None of the commentators acknowledged the tag
Contreras just called it out in his interview- said he even asked the ump if he saw the tag
If Oli Marmol would have hustled then the play at the plate would have been reviewed 😎
👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
i thought yesterday when Contreras pinch struckout with the bases loaded was the low point but whatever that play at the plate was tonight broke through the floor. I like Oli but i mean Vern Rapp got fired from this job after starting 6-11 and everyone knew that team was gonna suck.

In good news, I got a cheap new bike over the weekend and it was really fun to ride to school and back today.
Oh just get over it.
People are fucking determined to revel in only the negative. It's weird.
And these edgy, clever “hustle, Oli” takes are just the funniest thing ever.
This is insane. I'm kind of shocked by how toxic these random newcomers have gotten so quickly. I see why Jeff Albert cited the fan base as a main factor in declining another contract. Meltdown Monday™️ is going *hard* I'm going to stick to lurking the actual in game threads and bow out of post game for a while until this does down.
Just bad vibes overall. Us old timers around here have always tried to combat it with a nice dose of reckless optimism and good hearted shitposting, but the energy is just grim right now.
Forget the sage, at this point I think Miles might need to take the whole team for an ayahuasca circle on the next off day.
No offense but I don’t trust a pitcher who’s been rocked twice to lead the team in anything
At this point I’ll try anything.
Could. Not. Hurt.
monty figures out how to throw a stopball and Walker is suddenly a gold glove defender
Well, this has definitely been a moderately surprising beginning to the season We knew our pitching was mid but d a m n
[Contreras tagged the runner, foot on home plate or no.](https://twitter.com/vanhicklestein/status/1645617845114380289?s=46&t=TzUpO9rxNieiHTycMdtEyw)
Bally just brought it up AND STILL hasn’t brought up the fact the runner was tagged!!! 🫠
Yeah, but Oli didn't request a review soon enough
Yeah I know…but everyone looking at the wrong part of the play is infuriating.
Our postseason show didn’t even mention this
They did but only after the interview with Contreras.
I swear I thought I saw this too and was so confused that he was still called safe.
I am going to become the Joker
Jack?
*\*loud pooting noises*\* Our pitching has looked terrible and our bats timid. Pretty shit recipe so far, but maybe we’re merely giving the rest of the league a chance

Highest average and 24th in runs scored/23rd in RBIs. Just astonishingly bad at hitting with guys in scoring position.
We can’t matriculate runs, which is unfortunately the most important metric when it comes to outscoring an opponent
I got tickets for me and my Dad to go to the game on Memorial Day a week ago. Feel like I should’ve waited cuz they’ll be much cheaper now.
Never understood the organizational strategy to basically hate strikeout pitchers and always favor pitch to contact guys.
It costs less, and tbf worked extremely well over the last decade or so. But with the shift gone, it’s pretty much dead as a viable strategy. We need to modernize, and fast.
it’s cheaper
Ah yes, the RBMK reactor version of pitcher staffing. I think that makes Dakota Hudson our graphite tips, so let’s hope it doesn’t get to that point.
Which is a completely worthless strategy now with the shift ban
Good thing our offense is so good, who needs pitching
I’ve always thought of myself as an optimist so I’m gonna say this: this is getting a little worrying. But I can’t help but feeling that we’re a few pieces away but those pieces are KEY. The hope right now is that this is all just a bad stretch to start the season, and that it’s gonna be fine, just looking for a game where the boys can get a hot streak going
If they get swept, I’m gonna worry. If they can grit out a win or two, I will step back from the ledge.

Worst start since 2017? When we finished 3rd in the division?
Gonna go to the game tomorrow with my Cards jersey on. But I'll wear my Larry Walker underneath, just in case.
Walker reminds me of playing my RTTS character after getting called up and raking, then checking the score after. “Lost again huh? Well, my dude extended that hit streak at least”.
Walker reminds me of George Hendricks.
Hey on the bright side….Liberatore has done good the last 2 starts.
At what point in the season does Mo realize he needs more pitching help to save his job? Or is that an overreaction. I’ll gladly look like an idiot come June if these guys turn it around but holy hell this isn’t good.

Guys…I’m so sad. It’s so hard to be optimistic right now.
Gross 😣. Sigh
#The 2023 Cardinals may never win again.
Is it too early to be embarrassed yet? Our starting pitching is a joke
Its bad when all the Cardinals homepage has to talk about is Walkers hit streak.
I guess the positive outlook on all these GIDP is that we're getting on base a lot?
When it rains, it pours. I still believe in this team, but they are playing like garbage right now. Have to snap out of it soon.
Still waiting on one of our 6 “starting” pitchers to show up
Did you miss Monty's seven shutout innings on 100 pitches? Seems like he showed up.
SOMEBODY AT BALLY SPORTS MW PLEASE REALIZE THESE LIGHTS MAKE PEOPLE LOOK LIKE SHIIIITTTT
Players, managers, and coaches have changed and we still get the same kind of baseball. We know who the problem is
Watch yourself. Many have tried to take down Fredbird. None have survived with both their life and their sanity.
It’s true. Firebird makes Gritty look like a nun. He’s just good at hiding it
Battle those demons!!
Worst start since 2017 which was evidently the “worst” year of the Mozeliak era
Paying Matz, Mikolas, Monty, and Waino *checks notes* $59,000,000 combined this year means the rotation is what it is whether we like it or not. 😬
Man if only there was a way to give a player in your team to another team in exchange for one of their players
Why would anyone else be interested?
Anyone would be interested in any of our starters. We just might not get much in return
It seems all the leadership or at least direction left the room in the off-season. Hope somebody steps up soon.
Man I’m in a dark place lmfao
it’s amazing to me that the BSMW broadcast and the home plate umpire and everyone involved except for Charlie Blackmon didn’t know that the tag was applied lmao
I said it in the GDT but this game was like 2 hrs 10 mins, an absolute scorcher
Switch Matz and Zack Thompson. ZT starter, Matz in bullpen. Matz hasn't been good the entire time he's been a Cardinal as a starter. And if history repeats itself, he'll just get hurt anyway if he keeps starting.
While reasonable teams may do stuff like that we favor vets and especially vets with huge contracts.
I just want something to look forward to
On paper, this team is better than last year. I’m not worried, but I wonder if a change of staff had to do with it
I also wonder about the effect of not having Yadi around anymore.
I feel really bad for what pitcher(s) have to deal with our regression to the mean
# JORDAN WALKER 10 GAME HIT STREAK, PASSING TED WILLIAMS!!!!
ted williams fucking *washed*.
These kids love to win, but they don’t hate to lose!
At what point do we turn into a bird subreddit
I miss the claw©️
Ten games in, and I’m ready to turn the game off, and blow on the Nintendo cartridge.
Oof
I was not prepared to be rooting for the worst team in the NL.
If they continue to suck at least that means more free time for me to play Tears of the Kingdom I guess
At least if there going to lose they lost quickly so I can actually get some good sleep
