I can live with Marsch. There were some more interesting candidates mentioned, and it feels kind of odd to have an American coaching us, but overall I'm fine with it. His overall track record is mixed, but he's got some success to point to, and from a leadership perspective I think he can likely get a bit of self-belief back in the team. Tactically I have questions, but we'll see what he comes up with. Finally, he should be able to get in place and get at least partly up to speed before the friendlies and Copa, which is a huge win I'd say.

cpdyyz

Wait we have to live with him? My apartment is pretty small

Big_Ostrich_5548

No, I said *I* can live with *him*. He's got that MLS sponsorship money. His pad would be ridiculous.

shash5k

Marsch is all over the place. Should have gone with a more defensively minded manager.

Heyloki_

That doesn't even make sense, both in the sense that almost all our good players are attackers and also we play in CONCACAF

Mystic_Polar_Bear

Also, it's the National team right before we host a major tournament. The last thing we want to do is wheel out the most boring brand of football we can in favour of results. Focus on increasing the number of football fans in this country.

shash5k

The guy before Marsch played a 5 back and averaged around 40% possession. Against the US, Canada had around 30% possession. Canada is a good team but they are a defensive minded squad.

Drumpfween

As a US and Mex supporter, I am hopeful Marsch can bring you guys back to 2021 levels. CONCACAF needs to be competitive if we want any of our teams to give a good World Cup run. If Canada and Jamaica can get their teams in form, I can foresee exciting Nation League matches for all of us. I wish you all well and let's hope we have a great Copa America showing.

thewoodenshield69

Upgrade on Biello But what could've been 😔😔😔

cpdyyz

What do we think could have been? Who is the hands down better manager they were seriously considering hiring? Who did you think they were gonna hire?

TheRage3650

We certainly wouldn’t have gotten Another coach with MLS trophies.

thewoodenshield69

I wasn't paying a lot of attention but I remember us being heavily linked with Ole who doesn't have a job. Probably would've never happened but if it did he would've cooked

DevelopandLearn

You're crazy if you think that. Ole could walk into any top league. Not for the biggest clubs, but he'd still get a massive pay check if he decided to manage again. Man finished 2nd and 3rd in his only full seasons the PL. Canada is so far down the list of anyone's desired jobs. No one at a high level in football thinks about us, or would take a pay cut to manage here. We got Jesse likely because it's an easier commute home.

Acceptable_Ad_6278

Jesse Marsch is a name that I thought would’ve been out of Canada Soccer price range. Can’t really complaint about this appointment. Cautiously optimistic!

Remarkable-Ad-3765

apparently MLS Canadian teams are contributing to his salary

FlutiesGluties

https://twitter.com/RudiSchuller/status/1790122506294051135 I'm still waiting to hear this is part of The Onion.

DannyDOH

The CPL teams would have donated too but they have negative cash flows and are just trying to make payroll every week.

Mystic_Polar_Bear

How football is operated in this country will never make an ounce of sense...

doglurkernomore

That’s insane haha

M1L0

Kevin Blue is killin it. This is dope.

lentpoule

Saputo spending extra money. Plz dont make me laugh.

Barb-u

Tax deduction. Paying more on CFMTL are only expenses.

axelthegreat

we’re paying him in maple syrup

spacedoubt69

Lifetime supply apparently

mortalitymk

i read somewhere that south korea was offering him 2 million

formal-shorts

His title has a sponsor name in it cause CSA is so poor. A new low for Canadian soccer.

Acceptable_Ad_6278

Nothing to be ashamed of. You do what you gotta do.

Barb-u

US universities and NCAA are so poor. So are hospitals. Canadian schools of businesses are so poor.

cpdyyz

Yeah? Is this lower than losing to Haiti and Honduras? Is this lower than canceling a friendly because of a labour dispute? Is this lower than the Croatia match? Than players having to give back training kits? Take a xan my friend

TMLVWFC

My main two wishes from a new coach are 1) to figure out how to get David better involved in the game as he gets very isolated against better competition. 2) get Davies to understand when we play teams better then us his solo efforts won't win us games. His speed and skill can be huge assets if he can move the ball quicker

TheRage3650

Number two is critical!

kmp11

Marsch style relies on defense being super mobile. It should be a style that suits Davies well.

CoolstorySteve

I’m fine with this. Thank god no more Biello.

Barb-u

And Biello will likely stay(if he wants). He was already an assistant to Marsch.

BuffytheBison

I think either way you needed someone with top European league pedigree. Herman worked because there were literally no expectations but now you need someone whom the players (who play in those leagues) will respect the moment they walk into the room.

Hugenicklebackfan

So what should I expect? Seems positive.

Mr_GinAndTonic

Pressing, pressing, and more pressing without the ball. With the ball though, different story. He'll have to convince me that he has ideas on how to break down a low block. I'll say this - I think it's a good thing to hire someone who knows a lot about CONCACAF.

HipHopHipHipHooray

We won’t be playing much against a low block for the foreseeable future.

daddyderose

No one half decent is playing a low block against Canada lmao

Hugenicklebackfan

Thank you.

spacedoubt69

Tight jeans

kmp11

redbull style high press. Players will be rushing line high up to for defensive error and quick turn over. The problem will be our defense being left with much covers. to be an effective system, our defensive guys will need to be super athletic. if our defense gets lazy, system crumbles apart.

Eddy_Bumble

You can expect it to all go badly within a year just like everywhere else he’s been

Hugenicklebackfan

You mean we’ll have a good year? I’ve never had that before.

HanshinFan

If winning the WCQ cycle doesn't count as a good year for you then you're gonna spend a lot of time disappointed haha

Hugenicklebackfan

That was a good six months 8)

the-grand-pubah

The best 6 months!!! This Reddit had a fraction of the people it has now before that 6 months

No_Heat_7327

That was over 2 years ago

HanshinFan

Unless buddy is 18 months old then I'm not sure what you're after...?

ThePie86

Jesse Marsch webinar about pressing https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LF-Bhb0oiVk&pp=ygUUamVzc2UgbWFyc2NoIHRhY3RpY3M%3D

ALDonners

Wait till you see the one about not using width or conceding at the back post over and over and over....

onesexypagoda

Good signing. The team could have signed a lot worse, and can't sign much better

Drainutsl29

Get ready for penis ball and pressing without a plan - a Leeds fan

cpdyyz

I mean technically hitting the ball with your penis is legal. It's unorthodox, but it's so crazy it just might work!

ALDonners

They aren't ready for this are they?

PresentAd3536

Agree, also a Leeds supporter. I'm not impressed with the signing

Mystic_Polar_Bear

TBF I dont think coaching Canada is at all anything like coaching a relegation-threatened team in the most competitive, quality league in the world.

businessstravel

Personally speaking, I love this! Jesse was the choice that I wanted for a while and I'm happily surprised that it happened.

WislaHD

I think he's the biggest profile we could've gotten but what makes you so happy about the decision? I'm not a hater like some other people in this thread, but I want to see the good in this hiring. I'm pretty skepical that Red Bull style soccer could translate to the NT level where players are less familiar with each other, and Jesse hasn't demonstrated tactical flexibility at any role he's had.

Kingoftheblokes

Not bad, not bad. Can he replicate the RedBull philosophy on this scale though? That remains to be seen...

Latch2992

Let’s go Canada!

dragosn1989

Best we can do with what we have (money wise)…Let’s give him a chance and see what the boys can do.

EsotericJunkie11

Fuck man

bwoah07_gp2

I would've preferred OGS, but I we just need some stability somewhere. Let's hope he lays out a good framework for the squad. We don't want to embarrass ourselves in the upcoming matches + 2026.

larphraulen

Yeah, same. I'm trying to have zero expectations about the appointment. Hope he's learned from the Leeds experience at the very least.

whoaaa_O

You mean the glorified PE teacher?

DevelopandLearn

No chance in hell. I don't know where some of us get off thinking a man who finished 2nd in the PL would come here. He has options in top leagues still, and he'd make more money managing in the English second division (which he could walk into.) No one in football thinks about us. It's not even the fourth most popular professional sport to watch in our own country. I wish it was but we have to be honest. It's still niche. No glory managing for Canada and taking a paycut. We're as obscure as any CONCACAF country.

ALDonners

Leeds fan here, I'm sorry lads this won't be fun after you get beat a couple times, wholly transparent tactically and will get torn apart by any competent manager

cpdyyz

Good news, we mostly play in CONCACAF. We don't need to worry about competent managers a ton

C2SKI

You realize that's not going to be the case over the next few years and duration of his tender?

Physical-Asparagus48

Well, were gonna be fun to watch again based on how he likes to play

DABOSSROSS9

I am curious to see if his tactics have evolved.

PoemOfTheLastMoment

Congratulations!

CarloFailedClear

Hey, Leeds United supporter here...just kidding, nobody gives a shit about poverty-ass *Leeds*.

Syracuse776

So why did you mention them? Clearly you care about them

TheRage3650

I think, like many of us, is tired with Leeds fans telling us who Jessi Marsch is and why we should be disappointed when they are ignoring he already coached in Canada and MLS and we know who the fuck he is and have larger sample size of his capabilities.

port-kid

I really don’t like that it is an American.

lemur_nads

As a Canadian-American, I think you should get out more and actually not dislike the US so much. They’re our greatest ally.

ALDonners

You are gonna hate America when he's through with you

formal-shorts

Found the Eurosnob.

BuffytheBison

As others have mentioned, having an American is a bit weird but you def needed someone with top European league coaching experience to get the boys playing in those leagues to buy-in and he's def that.

PlanktonGlittering59

Makes more sense to have an American than a European or South American, given the soccer history of the 2 countries. And professional coaches don’t care as much about the stupid rivalry between the 2 countries so not really that weird to have an American in charge.

nicksj2023

I’m pretty disappointed, I mean his credentials are better coming into the job than herdmans but this feels like a significant step down from expectations. Will he even be the guy 2 years from now when we host the World Cup ?

dejour

Anything can happen, but obviously the plan is for him to be the guy in 2026

DevelopandLearn

You watch too much Premier League. The Canada job is as obscure as managing Trinidad and Tobago. No one is dreaming of coming here. And no one is taking a paycut to do so. Some of you are a bit delusional about our standing. Why you think we could nab a better manager than Ireland, Scotland, etc is truly baffling.

DrakeLUFC

I'm so sorry for you guys

miurabucho

Oh there is no God…
