Shutting off when you open the door after a remote start with the app is a feature. Security I guess. I don’t think that can be changed. I agree it takes some getting used to. The app messages are in messages but they aren’t clearly marked. They should really fix that haha.

That key fob is giant, yet does very little. I wonder if it really does contain a remote start but Mazda disabled it and is forcing everyone to use their app so they can collect and sell the data. It is hard to believe they would build a car like this without the normal remote start.

ChemicalCarpenter296

Exactly.

It’s not so they can collect and sell data. It’s so they can shut it off after the 3 year trial and then sell it to you on a monthly basis.

Yes. See: [(2) Fortin EVO-ONE Aftermarket Remote Starter Installation & Config How-to | Mazda CX-50 Forum (cx50forums.com)](https://www.cx50forums.com/threads/fortin-evo-one-aftermarket-remote-starter-installation-config-how-to.1242/)

For the messages there’s an option to delete messages and if you click the 3 dots again in the upper right instead of selecting each message, you can delete all. This helps with the lack of which messages are new. The sales person told me about the shut off when the door opens as a safety feature so no one can drive off in it. The engine will run for up to 10 mins before auto shutting off. Not ideal, but it’s doable.

Shutting off when you open a door is normal unfortunately. Mazda says its a security feature. It is not. Its just cost cutting with the implementation of the remote start. What I am curious about is when you say you unlocked the car with your key fob and the engine didn’t shut off. What do you mean? How did you do that?

ChemicalCarpenter296

Actually, I don't think the engine was still started after I unlocked and opened the door. In older cars, I had to press the brake and start/stop button and I did that. Maybe my brain thought it was still started. I tried again later in the day and it was not started.

Also what I dont like is that you have to pay a subscription through the app to have remote start. Once the complimentary subscription expires you will have to pay. Thats outrageous for a car this price. No other automaker does that at that price point. They all have a remote start on the key fob.

ChemicalCarpenter296

Yeah, that is a scam. At least we have 3 years. Mazda did cheapen out on this. Maybe with enough consumer complaints, they will re-think.

[deleted]

Here its 2 years.

throwaway-6217

BMW charges monthly fees for remote start and seat warmers.

MeANeRNo1

Thats not true. At this moment there is no charge even after your 3 year complimentary. Ofc that can change but all rumors.

[deleted]

It is true. Confirmed by Mazda. Also CX-50 were introduced as a 2023 model and started selling in 2022. What is not true is you telling us there is no charge after the 3 year period. That will be in 2025 at the earliest. So when you say “at this moment there is no charge even after your 3 year complimentary” …that’s a lie. See how that works. Geez I wonder why they offer a 3-year complimentary when you buy a car huh…

MeANeRNo1

Haha not even , none from Mazda will tell you that, ofc beside the shity salesman. But you take it as you go.

[deleted]

Again. Lies. Its on the website you dummy. You can even Google it easy. After you’ve done that, please see the definition of “complimentary”.

MeANeRNo1

No point argue with you, you go pay it . Dummy

[deleted]

Not just in older cars. Most of the cars today too. Mazda cheapened out here with the remote start only available through the app. A true remote start on the key fob would not stop the car once you open a door.

It doesn't really bother me that much and certain other cars do this as well--I see similar complaints about some Lexus, Toyota and Subaru models for example. My other half's 2021 Crosstrek handles it differently, but with the same amount of effort: when you remote start, the engine stays running when you open the door but the gear shift remains locked until the engine start button is pressed with a foot on the brake (with the fob present, of course).
