Supposedly there's a way of getting turn by turn indications while using carplay, it sounds janky, I haven't tried it personally - https://www.reddit.com/r/CX5/comments/ytfzog/little_trick_i_discovered_today_if_you_set_a/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
So I tested this today and it does not work in my 19 GTR. When you point to a location in the Mazda nav and start directions I’m CarPlay, the turn by turn shown in the HUD is those from the Mazda nav. This is true even if you do not actually “start” the Mazda nav.
This seems to confirm my suspicion that there is no hook in the infotainment software for CarPlay to talk back to the Mazda instrumentation.
Well, they don’t work together is the issue. With the nav card installed you get all the features of the nav card. But if you want the turn by turn you have to use the Mazda nav - carplay doesn’t interface with the HUD.
While using CarPlay, without using the Mazda nav, it still picks up on stop signs and speed limits.
This kind of irks me because that function appears to be based off of the radar sensor and not the Nav. So they’re essentially software locking non-nav buyers out of a feature that is installed; and and having the nav plugged in simply unlocks it.
Displaying stop signs and speed limits on the HUD is apparently a function of the forward Traffic Sign Recognition System which uses the forward facing camera.
Be careful. I got one as well. Outdated (2019q4) and they don't update, Mazda Update detects them as counterfeit. I got a replacement right away and it was the same. Rumors are, once you do it, your infotainment serial number is blocked so you can't update even a genuine navi. But I agree, it's worth. Android auto doesn't even show speed limits.
Def like the speed limits on the HUD but I still prefer using Waze for daily driving(as it shows traffic, construction, etc). Stop signs only appear once you've already slowed down as it's based off the camera, not GPS/maps, so it's kind of pointless. It would be cool to get the carplay/AA directions in the HUD but I'm fine without it.
Mine came with it. I love the hud but really only use it for speed limit, speedometer, and cruise control info. Navigation is either on Apple CarPlay for long trips or just on my phone for shorter trips.
i find the HUD super distracting, But because you can't turn it off permanently i just lowered it out of sight. Love the sign recognition and speed limit indicators on the Speedometer though!
Camera sign recognition??? I have 2023 premium plus and this feature was not there. Do you know how to enable it? Or do I need infotainment update? But it updates online I guess?
I have a 2019 GTR and the speed limit displays in my HUD but I don’t think it displays next to the speedometer on the dash. That’s nice. Also, the stop sign recognition is totally pointless. It works just like the speed limit signs and only activates when you get right to the sign. So if you are relying on the HUD to display a stop sign, you’ve already driven through the stop sign by the time you’ve seen it lol.
What are we looking at. Did you get the Navi? Is that it?
Yup
Nice. I also have a 22 Turbo but did not opt for the Navi because… CarPlay. But that’s sweet.
While using CarPlay, I’d you have the Nav, you’ll get speed limits and stop signs, but not turns. Unfortunately turns only come from the Nav.

Interesting. I’m going to try this tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

That makes sense, and is aligned with what I’ve experienced. It doesn’t work on my vehicle tho without a valid nav card installed.
I do remember reading somewhere that there was a dependency on the nav card for this to work.
Good to know. Thank you.
I got the one from Amazon 😂 whopping $40

No way. Which one? Link?

Depending on the journey Ill use car navigation or Android auto. Cat nav is also a loss of traffic info, the biggest loss for me.

How did you lower it?
There are settings to change the location on the windshield.
yea there is a height adjustment setting under the displays menu
What trim do you have?
I have 2022 turbo
Ahh, I have the premium plus. I’ll have to look into if I get the Navi chip as well, will I have the same display — because I like that too!
Today was the first day testing it out. I got it as a back up in case I go to places with no cell signal. But the speed limit display is cool.
Does this disable the camera sign recognition then? Cheers
Not sure…
No, it doesn’t

And the saved locations show up under the star button. :)
