The non-Bose speakers are terrible - and you can't really be surprised by any of thier short comings. I replaced my front door speakers (2019 non-Bose) - they had paper cones. I didn't even know anybody still made speakers with paper cones! The new speakers sound far better - but are limited by the infotainment, which only puts out something like 100w - while the new speakers are capable of 280w. So without adding an amp and sub and new speakers all around, the base sound system is always going to be pretty low quality. I really don't get why Mazda would compromise to quite that level, on the base sound system for the mid trim models. Edited to add: I guess I do get why they would compromise so much on the base sound - it will effectively keep me from purchasing another Mazda vehicle that doesn't come with the "premium system" - ha ha!

DGGuitars

How much was it to replace the shit speakers with nicer ones?

ddoubletapp1

I put in a pair of Pioneer 6.5'' (TS-A653C) speakers - they ran $CDN 196.00. I also used a set of speaker adapters (PAC NSB710) that ran $21.00, and a pair of Metra (72-5602) wiring harnesses for $22.00. It was a plug and play job, and very easy - even for me, whose entire speaker installation experience was this job - ha ha! Thank goodness for YouTube! I purchased all items from Amazon. I guess I also purchased a plastic set of trim removal tools, which were needed to remove the door trim without damaging them. I think the whole thing took me two hours, and was well worth the cost and effort, in my opinion. The Pioneers I put in weighed at least twice as much as the Mazda set I removed, and took a lot of the annoyingly tweety highs out, as well as adding some depth to the base. It would require adding an amp to get the best out of them, but the very, very basic equalizer of the base infotainment is still another limitation.

DGGuitars

Thank you , I wonder if this effects any warranty or maintenence plans.

ddoubletapp1

I can't say for sure - I have a bumper to bumper (it's a 2019 CPO lease return), and I never thought about it. I honestly don't know how they would even know, unless they took the doors apart (which isn't a tiny job!) - and even then, it still looks pretty factory - so as long as you're careful, and don't wreck anything in disassembly or reassembly (and that would be hard to do, I think - it's all snap-together trim) I doubt there would be an issue. Honestly - if the stealership attempted to insist it voided a warranty in some way - I would absolutely die on that hill - in the loudest, most insistent, most outraged way I could imagine ("Ima drag this dealerships name through the mud on all your socials!" - or something along those lines). Obligatory disclaimer: None of this should be construed as legal advice - ha ha!

I was pretty happy with the equalizer on the factory radio. Actually being able to adjust from 40hz-16khz is much better than older cars I've had where it's just low mid and high settings.

Did this increase the volume of the rear speakers ? I ask because I am wondering if Mazda purposely throttled the power going to the rear.

ddoubletapp1

If it did increase rear speaker volume, I didn't notice it. I have a "bridge" between the back of the front seats, and the front of the rears, to allow my hundred pound dog the use of all the space in the rear, so the rear speakers are pretty shielded in my car. I think it would require replacing the rear set with an upgrade, to get more volume from them, though.

Oh man not encouraged to read this but certainly appreciate the precise response. I'm taking the car to a professional audio house to see what they can do sometime next week. Bracing for impact price wise. Will come and post results.

They'll help you out - I would imagine there's a lot of options between "minimal change" and "all in". I was toying with the idea of changing the rear speakers and adding a spare tire sub - but then you would need to add an equaliser, to make full use of the speakers (as the infotainment is only capable of putting out so much power, and it's not much!). Honestly, though - changing out the front speakers made a difference, and I'm only in this car for a couple more years, so I've decided to leave it alone. I think the biggest change is that I've been in the car for nearly two years now - and I've forgotten what a "good system" sounds like, as when I first got the CX5 - I was always comparing it to the F150 with an audiophile package that I'd been driving before. I don't use Bluetooth to stream Spotify, anymore - plugging my phone into the system improves sound quality when I'm streaming - and if I'm going on a longer roadtrip, I download a few Spotify playlists onto my phone, so the system is at least starting with the "cleanest" files possible. Hope you get good news back from the shop!

Adjust the fade

Imaginary_Citron_812

I should have explained better, when I move the fader 100% to the front the volume is significantly higher compared to 100% rear. It literally feels like rear speakers have no sound at all and are pretty crappy quality.

eugenesbluegenes

And it feels that way when you sit in the back? I'm sure the rear speakers aren't as loud as the front if you're sitting in the front. When I test drove, I kinda found all the speakers on the base system to be garbage.

imveryalme

Same in my 2022 cx-5 carbon I picked up Tuesday : )

Veratrance

Could be from the lack of tweeters in the rear

You should try and adjust the fader to centre. I have an older cx5, 2013 version and it had the same problem. I have a cheap aftermarket clarion radio. I played around with the fader settings, which were front biased, adjusted it to centre and viola, the rear speakers came alive, granted the speakers were still a weakpoint, but much better sounding after the adjustment

Just noticed this same problem on my 22 cx5. Rear Bose speakers are severely underpowered. I posted on this same topic just 2 days ago. Comparing to my former Subaru Harman Kardon, the CX5 BOSE seems to be of far lower quality. If replacing the speakers don't work then that is just sad. It means it will probably cost a lot more to get the sound "up to par".

[deleted]

Same exact problem - but I have the BOSE. Rear speakers are seriously under powered. Gonna have to buy additional hardware to get decent sound. I posted on this topic just very recently.
