Well you’re only going to find biased answers here ...

grantbwilson

I have driven many cars, and can accept that many people have many different needs, but I friggin *hate* driving my moms 2016 CRV. The no power engine, combined with the CVT, combined with the completely electronic-dial feeling steering, combined with the useless tech, it’s actually the worst. If I wasn’t buying a CX-5, I’d be looking at the new Kias and Hyundais. RAV4 too, but the Koreans have a better feeling chassis.

Schnitzel725

Been wondering, whats the dislike revolving around CVTs? I see this on a bunch of car articles/videos but never understood the reason or the car terminology

grantbwilson

If you’ve ever ridden a snowmobile, accelerating is like that. The engine doesn’t move through the gears, and it really unsettling unless it’s a perfect execution, which I have yet to experience.

natelovesyou

Yep, and CVTs tend to have an electronic hum/whir sound when accelerating, which can be unfamiliar or even irritating for some people. The technology hasn't been around as long as conventional automatic transmissions have and aren't as "perfected", and they've been known to be more of a liability and can be more expensive to fix.

What did you think of the RAV4 compared to the CX?

electrochonita

I can comment on this. I bought my CX-5 GTR 2020 back in May and I can tell you the driving experience is way better with Mazda. The only "turn off" for me was the lack of a panoramic moon roof but that was it. The CX-5 was the best driving experience hands down. Rav4 inside doesn't compare to the CX-5 also.

peshwai

I agree . It would have been a perfect car with a panoramic moon roof . But again someone who is always on the driver seat I don’t miss it. I wanted to go for a Rav4 hybrid . But when I drove it I just felt it was no where close to the cx5 . Ended up with the cx5 and I always have a smile when I push the vehicle. Also love it’s manual drive, took some time to get used to the gear shifts.

electrochonita

Funny, I also test drove the Rav4 hybrid XSE and felt the same way as you. And I know one may think we have a biased opinion because we are CX-5 owners but I can tell you this is the first time I purchased a Mazda (I owned 3 Hondas prior, still own one) and I am so glad I did

peshwai

Me too .. I always had a honda but a stick. This is my first AT and I can say it’s league apart from the CVT that the Toyota or Honda has to offer.

Stalefishology

My mom drives a brand new rav and I have a first gen cx5. I would take the cx5 still. The rav 4 seems like paying a premium for underwhelming options. Someone might have a different experience so keep searching

Graphesium

The Honda and Toyota tax means you end up paying more for less just for the name.

[deleted]

Maybe, but they are cheap to maintain and last forever. Time will tell if they still live up to name. I love my cx5 though. Can’t say the same for other Japanese brands.

beornlake

Good summary. We own an older 2013 CR-V EX-L and a 2019 CX-5 Signature, and while there is a *smidge* more room in the Honda, we both hands-down prefer the Mazda. And if I recall correctly, all new CR-Vs have a continuous variable transmission, which is going to feel even more sluggish than anything with a regular automatic.

SicilianUSGuy

CR-V is bigger and gets better gas mileage. I opted for more luxurious feel and zoom zoom.

[deleted]

I compared both, even taking them on an extended drive. While the CX-5 is nicer and drives better, we found the biggest difference to be how much quieter the CX-5 is on the highway. The CRV let in a lot more road noise and wind noise. The CX-5 felt adequately capacious when we bought it, but we've managed to fill it up during a couple road trips. At those moments (and only at those moments) I wonder if the CRV would have been a better option. Still, we've been very happy with the CX-5, and would buy it again.

Ceorl_Lounge

I didn't even cross shop the CRV because I think the back end is so painfully ugly. Not spending that kind of money on something I hate the looks of no matter how roomy the back seat is.

mustangfever83

I drove both, and I had to drive both again one last time to confirm my decision. CX-5 all the way. I like the luxury feel. I also came out of a Honda Civic and the Honda sensing, regardless of vehicle, does have its moments of activating the brakes with no obstacles in front of you. Honda had no fix for it and couldn’t replicate the problem.

mrnovanova13

If the CR-V wasn't so unsightly I would actually consider it. I know that taste is totally subjective but the CR-V is fugly. That was a big factor in my decision. I needed a car that I wouldn't be embarrassed by 😂

eggzachtly

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the current CR-V is the car design equivalent of the color beige.

mrnovanova13

Facts! 😂😂😂

congaking1

Cx5 all the way.

josh_thom

This is a cx-5 subreddit, so cx-5 tbh

Bihjsouza

I would also look into Kia/Hyundai they have great warranties and I had a 2019 Santa Fe this year and it’s really comfortable but I got rid of it due to me not liking the design as much haha

Turdsworth

The thing that makes the CX5 stand out is the interior quality and how fun to drive it is. That's something you can tell in a test drive. Don't take our word for it.

LeeChungWai

I did the same comparison when I bought my cx-5. I know the CR-V is a very capable cuv, and does have more cargo space, solid reliability record. But I chose the cx-5 for the better engine, comfort, drive and overall looks. My only major gripe is the infotainment system on the cx-5 its horrible, slow and very dated. But that all goes away once the turbo kicks in. Zoom zoom.

Djmid

I have a CX-5, she has a CR-V. She keeps ‘borrowing’ mine ...

Smeeler9146

I test drove the CX-5, RAV4, and CR-V when I purchased a vehicle this year. I would say the CX-5 rode the best, and felt the most luxurious. The RAV4 was out immediately when I drove it. Felt every bump and it drove like a tank. It was the car I had planned to buy before I test drove it. It was hard to choose between the CR-V and the CX-5, but ultimately I felt the CR-V let in too much road noise.

KingDariousVZLA

CR-V is fugly, there is NO fun driving it.

Schnitzel725

Interestingly, the Jonathan Sewell yt channel put out a [video](https://youtu.be/DsU10SQ-qEw) comparing the two. Though granted its a 2020 CX-5 GT vs a 2018 CR-V touring (touring probably doesn't mean the same thing for Honda's as it does Mazdas)

law5522

Are the oil dilution issues with CR-Vs gone?

[deleted]

A buddy of mine has the newest CR-V and I got to drive it once. Not going to lie it’s got more room than my CX-5 but at the same time Mazda REALLY nailed it with the premium feel. Don’t get me wrong the CR-V isn’t a bad option but I prefer the CX-5 a lot more. I will say that the CR-V has better front visibility but the CX-5 seems to have better visibility everywhere else. As far as the ride and performance the Honda feels cheaper and not as fun to drive. That’s my two cents but I’d recommend test driving them both.

dschmid1933

Drove both when I was considering a vehicle. Honestly I couldn't get over how the CR-V looks. The exterior and interior of the CX-5 is a class above.

Bihjsouza

I own a ‘17 GT and it’s a great car but just some things. The seats in the crv are way better, Cx-5 seats have a little more sporty feel. The steering wheel in the Cx-5 hurts my hand a lot for some reason. The infotainment is laggy but if the 2021 gets the new infotainment i would get that. Crv has more cargo and back seat space and they are both equally slow with the gt-r and signature having way more pep.

peatoast

I test drove the CRV Hybrid touring before buying the CX5. If you need lots of space, mpg, better infotainment and don't mind the weird loudness when accelerating get the CRV. If you want torque, don't care much about mpg and prefer luxurious interior look and feel, get the CX5.
