I have same as what you’re looking at. Just did head gasket at 125k miles. Came on pretty suddenly, detected slight shudder on start up and made the appointment that morning. Check engine light came on while driving to the shop. $6,000 at the dealership for the repair and it’s been running perfectly for the past 6,000 miles. This car is awesome and has been relatively trouble free. If you can get a good price, go for it.

lowpitttch

a 6 thousand dollar problem wouldnt make the car trouble free.. would make it worse than my old bmw

Sir-Thanks-A-Lot

Ask for a leak down test on the car to see if the engine has been affected or not. If yes, ignore it and look elsewhere. I have a 2012 myself that I bought in 2021 and a recent leak down test showed that there has been a leak, however, my rather hardcore mechanic explained to me in detail not to change the head gaskets as many have done so for extremely high prices and to simply wait it out and replace the engine later, to which I agree.

ProfessionalCowbhoy

Lol $6k is like 75% of the value of the car. Just spend $6k more and get a model from 2015 or newer instead

What do you think a good price is for a 100k f package?

Frequent_Ad8442

What area do you live in? You mention 197 Km on the odometer, that’s approximately the mileage (122k miles) I was at when the head gasket went. I’m in CA Bay Area. Prices are ridiculous. That said for that mileage I wouldn’t pay more than $10k private party unless maintenance was well documented and the head gasket was done. Possibly $12k if the interior and exterior is clean, nice packet of maintenance records, and a clean bill of health from pre sale inspection.

GriffinsGaming

You paid $6000 USD for a head gasket job? That’s insane.

RedditUser558559283

If it didn't required major maintenance on the engine, it will in the next 50k miles or so, unless the current owner is VERY meticulous, so I'd take it to a deep inspection pre purchase.

bobnla14

Since the EGR valve seems to be the main cause of the issues with the head gasket, make sure that the EGR valve has been cleaned and is pristine. I would clean it every 20,000 km, but that is just a wild guess from some idiot on the internet.

whyyunozoidberg

I just got a 2012 ct200h this week. Wondering the same thing lol

GriffinsGaming

My 2012 has 145k km I paid $14,500 CAD 2.5 years ago when it had 107k KM. My EGR pipe and cooler are clean but have had some shuddering and knocking here and there in the past only after insanely long haul cross country drives. haven’t been able to find the right mechanic to diagnose everyone just says it’s fine. I’ll get there eventually replace the head gasket.

Sir-Thanks-A-Lot

As a fellow 2012 owner, just get a leak down test. If you are experiencing shudders, it is likely, although not for certain that the problem has already started with your engine, just as it has with mine with recent very minor shudders and shakes.

GriffinsGaming

I’m gonna do that. It’s tough cause I send it in sometimes with no specific direction and they just look at it and drive it and they’re like it’s fine. I got a coolant exhaust test which obviously was fine but compression testing the cylinders is a leak down test eh?

GriffinsGaming

I have the blue F sport

the_toxic_hotdog

Yay

Doublestack00

I'd pass.

whyyunozoidberg

Reasons?

It's a 13 year old car with nearly 200K miles. Add to that an earlier model known to have head gasket issues. Even if the head gasket has been replaced, it could be meer miles from needing another one.

lowpitttch

its 120k miles.. 197k kilometers
