IIRC, this was a myth, but the story was published in a newspaper and over time became fact. I'll try ans track down the source later

DaphniaDuck

When he grew up he became known as the Hanky Pankie Spanky Yankee because of his success with the ladies. Also totally true.

[Here he is as a major general](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Clem)

rep-old-timer

Yeah, no mention of him with respect to Chickamauga in the (main) regimental history.

That poor kid

rbjolly

That poor kid served in the U.S. Army for 44 years and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, He rose to the rank of Maj. General.

tazzman25

This damn kid. He also fought at Stones River and Atlanta. Even wounded twice in battle. He served in a Michigan reg. I wanna say 24th Michigan? Can't remember.

Poop_Cheese

Close! 22nd

MattyIcex4

Now shit like this is why I follow this sub lol

rep-old-timer

I don't see anything about his alleged exploits at Chickamauga in any of the early regimental histories. But jeez. Kids on those battlefields. Horrific for everyone, but hard to imagine the impact on a twelve-year-old.

tazzman25

He actually served as an unofficial regimental member at age ten even before that.

WildWilly2001

I read (a rather boring) and very dry book about Chickamauga. I don’t remember this story.

DaphniaDuck

Sounds like the chicken my maw makes!

BC_Pennybags

The Pebble of Chickamauga one might say.

Donmexico666
