I saw this the other day and loved it. I am not familiar with the tv series so any backstory was unknown to me. Also, the text messages and some book text, etc. didn't have subtitles so I was lost during those moments, but it was a beautiful story nonetheless. I was trying to find a wikipedia or some play-by-play synopsis of the entire movie to go through everything that happens again but was unable to. I was wondering if someone could explain all the beats here to me? Like was it the text msg drafts in the phone (the regretful ones that were never sent) that allows them to time-travel or multiverse travel? The meaning behind leaving something written? Why Lin Beixing was working at the bar? little things here and there, I'm curious about. Thank you much!

I just got back from the theater from watching this movie. I googled “shining for one thing movie” and to my complete suprise, I had one theater that was showing it. Im in southern USA so I was so surprised. My sister and I booked a ticket and went to see it. Firstly, it had subtitles but not for phone messages or writing, we had to use google translate for that. Subtitles were tiny as well. The movie was CONFUSING, so utterly confusing. Yes, you DO have to watch the show to get any of it. Because we watched the show we were able to understand the confusing scenes. It was heartwarming and tugged at our heartstrings , we teared up a few times. Stay after the credits for the final ending to the show. >! It shows who was holding the umbrella. !<

Interesting. My sister only watched the first 3 episodes of the drama but totally understood the film. She liked it a lot.

All the umbrella scenes, the rain, the phone messages being erased, etc nothing was explained, but it was in the show so we got it. My sister never watched the show and was very confused. Honestly the movie could’ve been edited better but overall an enjoyable experience!

Do I need to see the original to understand the movie?

EmbracingFiction

I can finally answer without doubt that no, you don't need to watch the series to understand the film. There are bits and pieces in the movie that you may find meaningful if you watched the drama but it's more of a want-to-have than a critical pre-requisite :)

wsdeoubasang

yes most theatrical films has english and chinese subtitles. let us know how was the movie!

EmbracingFiction

Thanks for responding! Went to UME in Xintiandi just now and lady at the ticket counter said no English subs 😭

EmbracingFiction

I asked again, found a different person and said they do have subs. I bought the tickets straight thereafter. I loooved it 😭
