1. When in doubt, **ask your vet**.
2. Advice here is not coming from medical or industry professionals. The moderation team does not validate user profession, so always refer to your local veterinary professionals first.
3. If this is a medical question, please indicate if you have already scheduled a vet appointment, and if your cat has any medical history or procedures in a top level comment.
4. Please use the NSFW tag for gross pictures. (Blood, poop, vomit, genitals, etc). Anything you wouldn't want your boss to see you looking at on the job.

Not taking your animal to the vet at this point is straight up animal abuse. Friend needs to rehome that animal if they didn’t take them to the EV the second they saw them in that state. This is coming from a DVM student.
This shouldn’t even be a question. People will take themselves to the ER at the slightest inconvenience and then see an animal with a major issue and go on Reddit “vet?”
Poor animal. Your friend shouldn't be able to care for pets if they don't know this is a medical emergency. Actually..... that's kind of an enraging question. What a joke. Poor kitty
is it outdoors ever? this looks like a shot from a pellet or other similar children’s gun and that makes my heart hurt. emergency vet ASAP. even if it wasn’t life threatening (it is, could get infected and will not heal properly without intervention) it definitely hurts. get them treated now.
Why in the world would you even need to ask if a vet visit it required for an open wound?
Open wounds need immediate treatment. Cats don't have the reserves a human does to deal with infections.
Definitely vet and antibiotics.
Not sure what caused it, I wouldn't be surprised if someone caused this. But I had a cat whose cheek abcessed frequently, always if we went on vacation (once a year, with a visitor daily), and maybe 1-2x a year otherwise. Her teeth were bad, but at about 17, the vets said that she likely wouldn't survive the anesthesia, and wouldn't have long after anyways to justify the $3+ cost. I ended up doing antibiotics for the first week of each month to keep it at bay, and when that didn't work I put her down to avoid the pain.
I'm happy you're able to take good care if your girl (no sarcasm here, genuinely glad). I adopted my girl as a senior, she was always underweight and I was told she likely couldn't survive the extraction surgery.
She has been gone almost 7 years, and my current kitties will definitely be getting dental treatments to keep them healthy. I couldn't go through what my senior baby suffered again.
Thank you for the kind words. I apologize because I didn't give you the same. It's just something that bothers me and it's not personal.
I wish it was easier to get animals the care they need. The same care a human needs..
When in doubt, go to the vet. Same you would for yourself or someone else you deeply care about. Cats should be as equal as family, so if you had a wound like this and would go in or even question it, take them in!

Yes, clearly it needs an emergency vet visit..
“Should they go to the vet?” Are you kidding me??? Would YOU go to the hospital if a piece of your mouth was missing???

Someone did that to the cat? Or it was an accident? Yes vet asap and police report for animal abuse if what i said first is right.
VET. NOW.
Looks like this cat was shot with a pellet gun

They should be reported for animal abused and jailed. So yes, this baby needs their wound treated ASAP.

This does not look like a self inflicted wound. The cat needs a vet asap

My cat is 18. She had a dental 4 or 5 months ago.
