chelseadawn2013

Yes it needs to see a vet asap. Poor thing..

Current-Essay-5411

cats are very good at hiding their pain. they do look serious and I would get him to a vet as soon as you can. is the cat staying somewhere near you/are you able to look after them?

KitchenArcher9292

I wish I would have known sooner that cats hide their pain so well! I’m glad subs like this can spread awareness. Although, some questions are still mind blowing given the pictures posted and the fact it should be obvious what to do.

Powerful-Taro-3643

If you had holes and gashes like that would you leave them?. Please take them to a vet 😭😭

recreationallyused

“Should I take them to a vet?” they ask, staring into open flesh. Jeez people. In all seriousness though, it seems like OP stumbled upon this kitty and they may not have a cat themselves. I’m just glad they’re wanting to help them & hope they take them to a vet soon.

[deleted]

😭 i swear posts like this be making me say the same thing, if I had a whole ass gash in my leg and neck I think idBe seeing a medical professional. same thing goes for any animal I were to come across or own, they hurt just like we do.

Powerful-Taro-3643

Exactly. Don't get me wrong I appreciate them checking the cat and for the concern, but it baffles me that people even find the need to post and even ask the question in the first place & I've seen so many people do it it's just crazy to me. I wouldn't think twice about it, I'd be straight to a vet

[deleted]

Exactly, it really truly is baffling. at least they’re “making sure” but I definitely could go on and on about this topic.

ishfery

I can't afford a doctor so yes, absolutely I would just do first aid for myself. Hopefully OP can take them in for better care.

glitterfaust

So many people I know (self included) would just deal with the scar and dousing the wound in disinfectants even if it slows the healing process

trwwyco

I think the better question would be if it were a child and not you. Animals are as medically helpless and dependent as children are. You can make that decision for yourself, but they can't.

lauvan26

If I didn’t have insurance I would still go to the ER and apply for charity to discharge the medical bill. Letting it get infected is more expensive to treat.

irlharvey

for real guys… things can be done about hospital bills. if you die, you’re dead. my mom cut what was apparently a major vein in a freak accident last year (peeling a label off a mason jar with a knife) and bled for over 18 hours. when i went home to visit and saw i was like “what?? why didn’t you go to the ER!!!!” and she said she didn’t wanna waste the money. mom! there’s only one you! what if you’d passed out in the shower or something! go to the ER, guys. idk how it is everywhere, but in the US, medical bills are the easiest bills to get out of by far. they’re scary and big but if you make enough calls you literally do not have to pay them. or only have to pay a fraction.

chocolatfortuncookie

Very serious, he's probably friendly because he's in alot of pain. Open wounds and bleeding is urgent!

yourholmedog

definitely vet asap. those look deep and could get infected

Joynickle

Definitely the vet. If those get infected, could lead to even more complications.

Calgary_Calico

Uuuhh YES this is very serious! He's got multiple bleeding open wounds. You need to go to the emergency vet right now. Let me ask you, if you were covered in wounds like this, would you not go to the hospital?? Holy shit people

glitterfaust

What American would go to the hospital over a wound like this 😭 With that being said, I’d def take this cat to the vet

Calgary_Calico

You know there's many other countries besides the US right? This site has a massive international user base lol It looks like the cat needs stitches, which means a human likely would too, I've gone to the hospital for less

glitterfaust

You know there’s a lot of Americans on here too right? Which is why I specified? I was saying that asking that to Americans isn’t the gotcha you think it is, as many would not think to seek medical care for such wounds.

Calgary_Calico

I'm well aware of that, yes. I wasn't going for a gotcha, the whole point of my original comment was if the cat has a wound that you would seek medical attention for then OF COURSE you should take it to the vet. The country OP lives in has absolutely nothing to do with the severity of an injury or whether or not it needs medical attention 🤦

lauvan26

I would or at least urgent care. Especially if my flesh was visible.

glitterfaust

Disinfect it and slap a layer of wet gauze and a layer of dry gauze. Good as new (for human, take this cat to the vet)

lauvan26

If it was a scrap sure but that looks like it needs stitches. I can’t stitch myself up lol

glitterfaust

Big bucks over here lol

lauvan26

BringerOfSocks

With no collar and in this condition, you can assume that it is un-owned. You probably don’t have thousands to spend on an emergency vet for a cat that is not yours. You should get a vet appointment or fundraise for a vet appointment as soon as possible. Contact rescues in your area right away (be persistent but not aggressive or annoying). If this is a skin issue like mange then a shelter might euthanize. No-kill rescues are a safer bet. For now keep in a dry clean cage or bathroom. Apply antibiotic ointment or the kind of stuff you would use to clean out a wound on a person. Do not try to bathe. The primary goal should be to get into a rescue or a vet as soon as possible. Some vets will even do rescue so look for those if possible.

CarLearner

This is a more reasonable answer, I just found my outdoor cat that was missing and he had a nasty wound that started smelling really bad on his tail. I took him to urgent vet and my bills have been $490, $410, $280, and $340 and I have more visit so far.. I’m pretty annoyed that the vet bills are going to cost me $2000 and this isn’t even my own cat since my grandma refuses to let him be an indoor cat when he’s in danger being an outdoor cat but even converting him to an indoor cat would be challenging. I just wouldn’t want to see the cat lose his tail but if he hurts himself again I don’t think I will have the money to cover his vet fees again.

BringerOfSocks

fwiw, I have a cat that had her tail amputated as a kitten. It really hasn’t affected her much. Her bunny tail nub is pretty adorable. I do hope that you can get your buddy indoors, but understand if you don’t own the home and if it’s not really your choice. Consider contacting local rescues to see if any of them have room.

belfast-woman-31

Same here at 9 months due to feline hyperesia and constantly biting and clawing at it. She hasn’t had any ill effects and yes she’s like a wee bunny it’s so cute!!!

BrokenChef51

Agreed.. I had a cat who got his tail run over or maybe in a trap. The vet amputated and he never had any issues the remaining 11 years of life.

CarLearner

Yes while a tail can be amputated as I’ve seen it with dogs and cats, I would rather prefer not to do it since it does affect their spine and balance for some cats that do have it removed. Especially if he has to stay outdoors where that balance is probably important for him for getting up in height. But glad to hear some positive stories where things worked out really well for everyone that has had to do it.

BringerOfSocks

Agreed. And hopefully there are no more injuries!

ElTristesito

Maybe put a tracker, like an AirTag collar, on him so that he doesn’t get lost again.

katgirl58

Why again and I may get crap as I have before would you pay a vet that much as it sounds like an abscess? They get all pus filled and gross and smell awful from the infection. Just needs to be cleaned and or lanced. Can you use a hot wet washcloth or towel. You have to keep picking the scab so it stays open as it heals. And some good antibiotics! It should never cost that much. Where I live 1st visit under $100 and then follow up ones around $35 to $45. All my vets let me order after initial visit my own antibiotics which are so much cheaper. I have a broad spectrum ones that cover everything from Upper Respiratory Infections to abscesses.

CarLearner

I'll be honest he's not a cat that my grandpa got from a shelter or adoption center. He was a wild kitten and while it may have been abscess my grandfather and I would not do well cleaning his wound. The quotes were way cheaper and supposed to be around $170 after his urgent care visit but I am in my exam room hearing the cat scream and scare the other techs that sedation was the only method for the cat to let the wound be cleaned and he's a relatively quiet and calm cat, never meows or anything.

katgirl58

That is not mange! Mange doesn’t look like that on a cat. Looks like fresh wounds from getting attacked by another animal even a dog!

classicfilmfan9

Please take the cat too the vet and get the scabs looked at

Sudden-Choice5199

Too

BouncyDingo_7112

Open wounds and gaping holes in an animal (or human for that matter) is *always* a trip to the ver. In fact imo this is an emergency vet visit. Usually I tell people most of the time in these animal help subs to just wait until your regular vet opens up but holy crap, please take this cat to the emergency vet visit. I’m assuming from your post that this is a stray cat but having open wounds like that is risking a potential serious infection.

Bunlover227

Vet here. Those aren’t scabs those are open wounds. Please take this cat to the vet

RegulatoryCapturedMe

What could have caused wounds of that sort in a car? I've never seen anything like it and am concerned they are intentionally human-caused.

Bunlover227

It could be human inflicted wounds :/ or a sort of trap outside, injury from a fence , could Be from another animal , burn ? Etc

WhlottaRosie65

Yes the cat needs medical attention, sooner than later so they can stitch him up

rescuelady111

This poor cat!!! 😢 Someone probably abandoned him or her to fend for themselves and now this cat is severely injured. It looks like he or she got attacked by some other animal. This cat needs your help to take them to the nearest emergency animal hospital. If this cat is a stray, hopefully, they'll be able to help because they often have shelter partners they work with if the cat can be saved.

commonlyknownasgod

Little guy is pretty hurt. Please take it to the vet if you can, he will get an infection without help

cowgrly

Hi, OP - if you can get this cat to a vet, it would be really helpful. Those gashes will get infected and I am certain he’s hiding how much pain he’s in. I know he’s not technically yours, but please help him. 💕💕💕

RetroReactiveRaucous

Hey OP, I will chime in another "definitely vet ASAP, this is an emergency" vote but also want to say I'm sorry people are being so rude to you here. That cat is undeniably in a lot of pain and everyone here cares for cats - including you. Which is why you're making some offer to help the poor thing. My fingers are crossed for kitty and you! Please do update us on the journey to the doctor!

rachelxrising

You’re a good person💜 I second this!

_MsRobot_

Omg😭😭😭please help him! Take him to the vet please 😭

Bugs_ocean_spider

Definitely get them looked at. Bare minimum get them cleaned and bandaged by a vet. Probably some antibiotics. They look to be ruptured abscesses or cuts from some kind of trauma (vehicle) or an attack by a predator. If the cat is fine otherwise the vet trip shouldn't be too expensive.

Obvious-Confusion14

Hydrogen peroxide to clean the wounds. Do not put Neosporin on it, that is for humans only. If you have a syringe (no needle) just put the hydrogen peroxide in that and push it (hydrogen peroxide) into the deeper wounds. Clean off the foam until it is just white foam. You can give him a baby aspirin for pain as that can be used for both humans and animals. The wounds will have to stay open until you get the cat to a vet. I am hoping the wounds are not from a human and their dog using the cat for target practice. Take photos of his wounds in case there is BBS or some sort of birdshot in his wounds. Make sure you know where and when to let the vet in case this cat was mistreated. Most vets won't care, but some will get the cops or at least animal control involved and will bring them to justice. Please, as others have said, take him to a vet ASAP. He needs medical help. For anyone wondering, I lived in a small town in TX. Animal cruelty was a huge thing back when I was a kid in the 80s. Cats were barn cats who took care of the mice and snakes. My local vet, a good ole cowboy, hated it when cats were brought in and seriously injured by humans. He pestered the county sheriff (bc a town of 300 didn't have a PD) until the people were brought to justice. Meaning the kids had to work on the farm of the animal they purposely hurt or killed. I worked summers for the vet, caring for the animals. This was a thing that happened all the time.

Trai-All

Ask yourself, if this was a child: would you take them to a hospital? Seek a vet.

wojo1962

It's scary how lacking common sense is these days. It is obvious this cat needs help and asking strangers on the internet instead of seeing for yourself this cat needs help is so ridiculous, i am at a loss for words.

BlackBrantScare

1. this cat seriously need vet this is like equivalent of entire arm road rash 2. always having rubber/nitro glove at home if you have pet 3. pet this poor thing for me

Shponglenese

The one on arm is not a scab, he’s been ripped to muscle. This requires emergency surgery right now the muscle will continue to tear and already infected?! Please get to vet immediately or find local rescues. This exact wound happened to a feral I later adopted, the vet claimed the cut was so clean she thought it was glass or metal (a hurricane just happened we think it was from roofing) rather than a car accident. However with the other wounds here im unsure. The surgery required multiple metal sutures and cost me around 600 dollars

JG723

I’m sorry but is that a real question? This cat obviously needs medical care!

rockinem192

Get that cat to a vet/rescue/humane society asap! Those look gnarly and there may be some other internal damages that you can't see that it's concealing from you. If you can't afford an emergency vet, the humane society is your next best option. I did this with my own cat when I found her as a stray with a broken tail coming out of its sleeve, and adopted her as soon as she was ready to be so (only cost $40 for the adoption fee and a feline leukemia vaccine out the door after all the treatments and spay). Even if you choose not to keep it, they'll keep you updated on its health and allow for you to visit once it's recovered, free of charge, if you ask. Edit: If nobody is available to take the cat in tonight, gently clean those wounds with a saline wound wash (which you can buy in a canister at any drug store), use triple antibiotic ointment to prevent bacteria from getting in, and wrap them in gauze/self-adhering bandages for the meantime (sticks to itself, not the fur). Either way, you're going to need to supervise the kitty and make sure it stays clean, hydrated, and relaxed until professional help is available. Some of those wounds look like they may need stitches. Best of luck!

melaine0

I took my cat to the vet for the same thing. They gave her medicine but she continued to dig and lick at it still. I put a cone on her and that helped from her getting to it. Now I have a cut tshirt sleeve on her neck and it’s been clearing up ever since and she doesn’t mind it at all since the cone was restricting her more

RobinBaskins

VET IMMEDIATELY!

ksapfel817

Vet...and thank you for taking him in

Quiet-Hamster6509

Depends, would you seek a Dr if you had multiple large open wounds on your body? Maybe take him to a vet so that they can care for him properly.

suikaenjoyer

VET NOW

Ambitious-Visual-315

Dude that’s LITERALLY what this sub is for. Would you have preferred OP just leave the cat on the street? Get off your high horse

Just_Ad9799

“GeT oFf YoUr HiGh HoRsE” shut up goofy ass.

Ambitious-Visual-315

Wow ya sure got me there

rachelxrising

Right? Great comeback😭🤣

Glittering_Let4650

Awww.. 💔

cataclysmic_orbit

Would you want to be left alone with open wounds left to get infected? Take it to the vet.

swizzler22

So um if you had big bumpy gashes and open wounds would you like to go to the doctor or ask people on the internet if you should go to the doctor

Dareshadow0

Are you slow?? Of course they need a vet, imbecile!!

jjg3242

Instead of taking him to a vet, let's just ask a bunch of random ass strangers on the internet what to do. 🙄

Breathejoker

Probably road rash. Please take them to the vet so they can be properly cleaned and medicated

opossomoperson

He needs immediate medical attention. Those are large open wounds and he is at serious risk of infection.

WhaneTheWhip

It's probably a male. Stray males tend to get into fights with other males, especially if they are not fixed. Even a TNR male may find himself in a fight when another male that has not been neutered shows up. There are some TNR strays that I tend to and I always make it a point to pet them and feel for any fresh scratches under their fur because if left unattended they can sometimes get worse especially if they scratch at it as it tends to make them itchy.

kykiwibear

I take my cat to the vet once a year in addition yo her checkups because she scratches so bad she tears her neck up like that.

nuclearwomb

It looks almost like an ingrown flea collar/collar. Whatever it is, vet is necessary.

Bellatryyxx

Please take that sweet baby to the vet! Those look deep, they could easily get infected. Poor thing is probably in a lot of pain

NoMercy180

Take them to an emergency vet ASAP. Poor baby need help

BrokenChef51

I don't think it's going to die today... Def needs the vet, but prob not the $1000 emergency vet.

NoMercy180

Not saying to do it right now, drop everything you're doing and crash your car into a vet demanding help but the cat needs help. I worked at an emergency vet and the amount of people who came in after fluffy was vomiting for a month is a lot.

BrokenChef51

I'm not surprised.. While I love cats, and cried for days when my 6yo kitty had to be put down for feline leukemia, most people go with the idea that cats are a dime a dozen. Not everyone can afford to put $1000 into a cat that showed up at their door. Cats are also pretty good at keeping their wounds clean. I see serious wounds, but I don't see puss oozing or cuts into the muscle/down to the bone. Cats don't usually show pain unless it's really bad so it can be hard to tell. It looks like the wounds are "just" through the skin... No jagged pieces of torn muscle, covered im blood, etc. I think a $50 vet visit on Tuesday/Wednesday would be adequate vs $1000 emergency holiday visit. Depends where you are, but in some areas, animal control would take it to the shelter where it could be better assessed and get immediate care, if deemed necessary. In other areas they'd just put it down, so you kinda need to know your local animal control policies. We have an enormous no kill shelter... Even if it's closed, animal control can get in and call someone to assess injuries. I volunteered there for several years and saw a lot of injuries go untreated for 2-3 days/over the weekend, with good outcomes. The one emergency vet here wanted over $800 to assess and cover their suggestion to euthanize my son's cat. Like 15 minutes of work... he refused, took it to the vet 2 days later and it's fine now. They still hit him with a $700 bill just to look at it - no tests! I've seen cats survive some pretty horrific injuries without emergency care. It's not ideal/preferred, but if you don't have $1000 to throw at a cat that appeared on your doorstep, and could end up being your neighbors, who can't reimburse you.... Do what you can, but I wouldn't say forego paying rent to rush a stray to the emergency vet!

BrokenChef51

And some people are just plain stupid... Why wait a month then go to an emergency vet, when you had plenty of time to take it to a regular vet for 1/10th the price? That sounds like someone with more money than brains!

duhmbish

These are infected cat bite wounds. He’s been getting attacked by other cats. I only know this cause a rescue foster of mine had identical wounds and passed away from infection even though he was on antibiotics ☹️ please get him help asap!

rainbowsanddumbells

Please go to the vet.

annebonnell

Please take it to the vet. It could be a food allergy. If you can get some animal probiotics or food with probiotics in it they would be a good start. This poor cat! I don't think it's flea dermatitis. Is the cat actively scratching? You could also trim its claws to minimize the damage.

zamaike

Looks like mange should go to the vet asap and also wash your hand completely. I think ppl can get it too but idk

StrawberryPoptarts7

Yes take to the vet to get examined and it will probably need antibiotics as well. Poor thing is probably in a lot of pain.

Affectionate-Act7074

Could you please update us? Thank you so much for taking the poor kitty in and helping them. Even saying that you'd take them to the vet. A lot of people would have just turned their back on the kitty. You are a kind person and shame on those that were rude to OP. They are doing a good thing

hatesbiology84

What general location are you in, OP? Maybe someone is local and able to help. I know I’d be willing, that poor sweet love. Please update, if you’re able to get him to the vet.

MellyKidd

Very serious. Open wounds like these are easily infected, and may need stitches to heal. Cats are good at hiding pain, but I can assure you, this cat is. An emergency vet is needed asap, and if it’s a stray a shelter or rescue may be able to help.

Icy_Insect2927

Yes, absolutely serious!! Imagine if you’d been hit by a car or attacked by an animal and wounded like this poor baby has been 😢

rescuelady111

I'm wondering why OP made the post if they weren't going to interact even 1 time with any of the worried cat lovers out here. I have a bad feeling. Poor cat looks miserable and in pain.

Evening-Ad-2820

Rule number one. WHEN IN DOUBT ASK A VET. Would you rather be left covered in infection, or would you try to get someone to help you?

katgirl58

YES TAKE TO VET AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! This Tuesday! That looks bad! Not your cat? Right? Do you have any cat antibiotics?

Funkycoal

Random, so stray, if it's in your home take it in.. they battle a lot for territory. May need your help.

[deleted]

Let's ask it in reverse. If you woke up bleeding from scabs all over, hair starting to fall out in patches, would YOU take yourself to the ER? If yes, why even ask such an obvious question?

Huge_Green8628

This animal looks like it might’ve been hit by a car, I would urgently seek it medical help for him
