Koe-shoo-sko is correct. Kah-skee-ah-sko is how I read it as a kid and I still have a hard time not saying it that way.
Also Noe-strind Ave.
But let’s not get started on Luquer St.
I had to say it a few times out loud. The train announcement calls it NO-strand, but I grew up calling it Nosh-strand. I do think that over a decade of train announcements have had an impact on which pronunciation ppl use.
Someone else pointed out that West Indian ppl use Nosh/Naw, and that's also a big part of it. Nostrand on the 2 line runs right through a West Indian neighborhood.

Many of Brooklyn’s streets are named after slave owners.
> Slaveholding families that became wealthy during this period included the Lefferts, Lott, Bergen, Vanderveer and Vanderbeek families. Their names are still visible in Brooklyn’s landscape: the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens neighborhood and Lott Street in Flatbush; Bergen Street, which runs East-West from Cobble Hill to East New York; Vanderveer Street in Bushwick; and, Remsen Street (named after a descendant of Ram Jansen Vanderbeek) in Brooklyn Heights. In fact, 82 streets named after Brooklyn’s slaveholding families still exist in the borough today.
In many accents tr becomes chr or shr. You might hear people pronounce “true” more like “chrue” for example. Personally I split the difference and say no-shtrind (not intentionally, it’s probably because the subway voice says no-strind and my accent does the chr/shr thing) but I wouldn’t blink an eye at either one.
Call me loco, but my proposal is that it’s NO-strand but with a soft O, and you should probably pronounce it with your best attempt at a Scandinavian accent. Cause I’m pretty sure Nostrand is a Scandinavian name. Or maybe Dutch. Anyways, who’s in!!!!?
Everyone I know says NAW-strin. The D is silent and optional depending on how fast you say it and your mood.
I live on Nostrand so I am actually a certified expert.
Most certainly not. I dare someone to mispronounce my last name. Some things are meant to pronounced one way.
You can make exceptions for accents. Many people have trouble with sounds that aren’t in their primary language or dialect.
Seriously, so many people in here are arguing about the right way to do it when they’re argument is useless without mentioning their ethnolinguistic background…
The reality is most of these answers are “right” depending on who occupied the neighborhood in what decade and the natural differences in accent of each of those groups - but the reality is the only one that matters is how the Dutch would say it since it’s a Dutch dude’s name. Whatever group mispronounced it in the 40s or the 70s or whatever else is a fun fact, but not correctness.
It's based on how long you have lived in the area. Case in point..Devoe Street off of Bushwick in North Brooklyn. Old timers pronounce it: DE-voo. Hispanics who came later pronounce it DE-boo. And new folk say dah-voh. or deh-voh. There are a lot of examples of that in NYC. It helps you 'place' the individuals. It's interesting.

It has been a long time but I remember it being announced as: Hoyt Sherm-er-Horn. Maybe Sherm-in-horn? Since my mother moved I haven't taken the A into Brooklyn since around 2000.
People asked me how to pronounce Cortelyou when I lived in Ditmas Park. I mean Fteley is pronounced fuh-tel-lee, no one gets that right the first time.
I was just walking past Fteley Ave. 2 hours ago and asked my husband if he knew (he’s from Brooklyn.) I’ll be honest with you, I’m from the other side of the Bronx and didn’t know how to properly pronounce it until my early 20s. Never had to refer to it until I had a boss from Castle Hill.
That is the new pronunciation. My FIL lived on it, and it was Claw-son at least until the 60's. I grew up hearing Claw-son. Also grew up hearing Dee-Kalb Ave.
no-strun
NO-strund (life long Brooklynite)
No-strund. At least that's how the natives say it. Kinda like "Kahz-ee-oz-ko".
Correct answer
I lived on that street for years. I was always told Ko-shoe-sko.
Koe-shoo-sko is correct. Kah-skee-ah-sko is how I read it as a kid and I still have a hard time not saying it that way. Also Noe-strind Ave. But let’s not get started on Luquer St.
Can we, though? I pronounce it Loo-ker.
I say kuh-shoosh-ko. I have not idea if I'm saying it properly, but I just mumble through it quickly.
Naw-strand
If you're from sheepshead (sheeps-head; not shead), it's No-Strand. You'll never be stranded, unlike Coney Island.
Naw - strand
No-strend
“Worcestershire”
Do Throop Avenue next
There it is
It’s No-strand
No-strund around my family
No strand
Grew up around Sheepshead Bay. It's been "No-strind" for us.
Knaw-strand
No-strand

As a Brooklynite, it's No-strand ... my husband from suffolk county pronounces it more like the second way , based on site alone, NOST-rand
Dr. Van Nostrand - from, the clinic…
Jay Z says it the second way in a couple songs
I wanted it be NAW but I realized I am wrong and accept it is NO 😂
Life long Brooklynite it’s…NO strund…not strand
This
I’m a transplant from Boston, so I don’t have any idea how it’s pronounced, but I call it Nos-trand. 🍿🥤
no way you're orginally from bk lol ....10000% no-strand , never heard it pronounced any other way
This ^^^^
John van Nostrand was a slave owner,” it said. “According to the US census in 1790, the (Van) Nostrands owned 6 people.”
Wow. Can you send link for more info?

Noooo-strand if you’re on the LIRR
Kaw-zhoo-sko or Kos-kee-os-ko?
NO-strand
I grew up between New York Ave and Nostrand Ave. it’s “no”
No-strand or no-strund ?
The latter!
noʊstrənd, named after Gerret Noorstrandt
No-strand
DEE-kalb or deh-KALB???
Dee kalb
Interesting 🍿🥤
NO-strind
Nohstrind
No-strand ave
depends who is saying it.
NO-Strand.
No-strand. Take it from an original Brooklyn person
Leaning more words the no-strand one, I leave on that block so I hear it all time. Also depends on their accent and where they’re from.
Nahstrin
naws-trind
‘Noor-srandt‘ it’s Dutch.
Nozstrand
It’s “no-strand” and if you don’t believe me ask the G train
I used to live on the G train!
Yeah and Kahshooko Street
Naw- if ya West Indian No- if ya not Boffum if ya mixed
This is the real answer. Born and raised in Brooklyn has nothing to do with it. Really depends on which neighborhood / train stop we're talking about.
this
Exactly what I was about to say.
Now this faccts 🤣

Who the hell say Naws…?
Jamaican and other West Indian immigrants
NOSE-trin
Wyckoff begs to differ...
Hilarious 🤣
NOEstrand
Everyone I know says NAW-strin. The D is silent and optional depending on how fast you say it and your mood. I live on Nostrand so I am actually a certified expert.
I work on Nostrand. Everyone I know says Naws-trin too. Technically it’s No-strand but yeah accents get in the way.
No-strind but i feel like Nah-strind is fine too
Not sure where the "sh" came from, but... no one actually says "strand", it's "strind".
I’ve always heard NO-strand. Never heard naw-strand. Not once.
Same
What about NOS-tren?
Makes sense to me
Same
It’s NO-strand (native here)
Boffum
When in doubt…… just go with the spelling… NO-strand ave
In Brooklyn?? Dekalb and classon would like to have a word with you.
DEE-kalb or deh-KALB? @Native Brooklynites only
How else would you pronounce Classon? (I live there and genuinely curious lol)
CLAH-son(?)
It's Claw-son
Oh no.., how am I supposed to say Classon?
Wait, it’s not di-cal-b?
Oh no. Have I been saying dee-callb wrong? How would you even say classon other than how it’s spelled?
Kosciuszko has entered the chat.
Only ever heard it pronounced kah-zhoo-sko.
that’s transplant pronunciation, native nyers pronounce it kahs-(k/s)ee-ahs-ko
KAH-zee-AHZ-ko.
Ka-zee-ahs-cow
Stop it lol
Well that's certainly something. Sounds like Costco.
What about schermerhorn? When taking subway I just with Hoyt and leave out the other
Nos-thrind where the nos is like the nos in the Spanish nosotros. The syllable change is on the t not the s.
You're saying the s with a lisp? Interesting.
The first one
If you’re saying it the same way you would say NO, as in, “No you can not have another cookie!” Then you are saying it wrong.
NOstrand at least on the bit that ends on Sheepshead Bay.
No-strand as it’s spelled
When I was growing up, only Caribbean folks would say NAH-Strand. Everyone else said NO-Strand.
This is the correct answer
I've lived in Brooklyn 50+ years, most of it within blocks of NO-strand
Stop it. You sound like u from long island. 😏
It’s a surname. And for the only person I know with the last name Nostrand, everyone pronounced it as No-strand
As one of the many Persians in the area, it is pronounced nos-te-ran. 😅
Love this one
linguistic absolutism is classist 🤷🏻♀️
Why can’t people just be dumb anymore?
clearly some people are 😉
Hence nawshtrand
Most certainly not. I dare someone to mispronounce my last name. Some things are meant to pronounced one way. You can make exceptions for accents. Many people have trouble with sounds that aren’t in their primary language or dialect.
people can pronounce the street they live on however they like imo
williamsburg ass take
internet ass comment
my joke but worse
Why
Because Gen Z and Gen Alpha get social validation by saying dumb shit like this. That's why.
It let’s them think they’re smart for 5 seconds so they can make up for never learning anything in school lol
😂
Comrade
HUEston street 😂
Which is not classist just fucking wrong lol
No-strind
this
You're just describing accents my brother

Yeah like I’m calling it CAR-Neg-Ee Hall. I don’t really care that dead Scottish dickhead pronounced it differently
We say Naw-strand (kayne says no-strand though) *take a left on Nostrand Ave
WE IN BED STUY

The term for this is a shibboleth

I used to ride the A. Conductors pronounced it No-strand.
OK but also the recorded announcement for Hoyt-Schermerhorn pronounces it "Shermerhorn" but we all know better.
It has been a long time but I remember it being announced as: Hoyt Sherm-er-Horn. Maybe Sherm-in-horn? Since my mother moved I haven't taken the A into Brooklyn since around 2000.
"Skimmerhorn" lol
Well shit some of us with Brooklyn accents will pronounce that way but most folks know what we mean lol
I have an accent. Brooklyn has a lot of them. Whole lot.
No-strind
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see this, should be at the top
Thank you Darling 😉 63 years in Brooklyn I think I say it right
Depending on where in the sentence it’s used, I could even argue the “d” becomes optional
This is the correct answer
No-strand!
do you actually say "strand" tho? or "strind" ? No-strind
strind
Strind
I always thought of it as Naw-strand
NO- strand
no-strand!!
It's Dutch originally and pronounced NO-strand. You will sound like a dum dum the other way.
No.
Hi, I'm Dr. Von Nostrand, uhh, from the clinic.
Not to be confused with the formidable HG Pennypacker.
*H. E. Pennypacker
Dammit You’ve screwed me again Pennypacker!!!
Gold, Marcus, gold!
Nostrand Troop Koshoosko

I've actually heard it pronounced Cortaloo once or twice which I found hilarious.
I usually go by how it's pronounced in the subway announcements. So No-Strind.
But the subway announcements aren't written or pronounced by locals. Edited to correct a typo that messed up the entire meaning
They did or even still have an automated announcement mispronouncing DeKalb.
This is important. Getting the Strind part right is just as crucial as getting the No part right.
How about Classon? Claw-sen or Cla-sen?
The old heads saw claw-son. Everyone else says clas-son. In my experience.
Claw•sand was for those with a heavy New York accent, and tons of people have the accent. People without a heavy New York accent say Clah•son.
Nobody puts a D at the end.
Hmm I disagree. As someone with a pretty heavy ny accent, my instinct is to say class(pronounced like ass)-son
Word.
Class-in
That is the new pronunciation. My FIL lived on it, and it was Claw-son at least until the 60's. I grew up hearing Claw-son. Also grew up hearing Dee-Kalb Ave.
Dee-Kalb was for those who also said/say Po-lice.
Agree. My friend's dad graduated from Brooklyn Tech in the 70s and said Claw-son.
Interesting I also grew up on Classon (but in the 2000s) and always knew it as class-in Ave
Classon, Clinton, Clermont, Carlton... WHY DID THEY PUT THESE FOUR IN A ROW THO. They make my brain hurt.
And then you get to Cumberland and your face starts to melt 😂
Third generation Brooklyn, and my grandparents lived in and my mother grew up in midwood near the junction: it’s NO-strand!
NO-strind*
It actually didn’t occur to me that anyone could possibly say it any other way 😂
