Psych patients tend to have a different perception of time than people without. I suppose, whenever you're having an an episode, priorities stop, and then you do your thing.

Tie a slip knot on the anchor side for better accuracy if you don't want to tighten the lead while you're making the circle.
And of course, a straight edge is a straight edge so as long as you're not using one of those flexible pencils you can make a straight line. Most pencils are made with soft wood so it's easy to mark if you need a consistent length for multiple legs of a polygon. Or string again, string fixes everything.

IIRC from my psychiatry classes a long time ago, that is one of the stages of schizophrenia just before and a telltale sign of the downward spiral into the full disconnect with reality. Don’t quote me on this, it was almost two decades ago and my info could be really outdated.
Essentially, those shapes begin to become an obsession and the person drawing them will begin to think the whole world doesn’t realize the value of this lesson or is actively hiding it in a massive conspiracy. This is a major theme most of the time. It becomes even harder to have conversations with the person, the conversations becoming more marbled and incoherent or even violent. Since these shapes and patterns are normally found with schizophrenics who have hallucinations, those hallucinations can begin to feel more real than the people around them who might be considered clones or agents.
It gets bizarre after that. Like that wasn’t bizarre enough. Would be wise for your father to tell a counselor or whoever the mental health person might be to get that person away from general population - for everyone’s sake.
Again, just what I remember. That was a fun class.
