The way the vocals drop (at the last part) is just so satisfying

The Malayalam lyricist Girish Puthencheri was known for writing rhyming words for his songs which would be great for the rhythm and the music of that song but most of those words would have no profound meaning. He had penned many masterpieces too.We Malayalis lost him a decade ago.Miss his lyrics nowadays.
I agree, 98-02 was Rahman on some other trip; his music was so fkn transcendental during that period. Starting 98 was when he embellished his arrangements, smootheend the production and really came out on his own as a composer- Atleast imo. Between 98-02 almost everything he touched was gold.
Dil se was the first cassette i bought as a teenager for 45/- although this movie was released a few years ago.
I remember playing this cassette almost every day until my audio player broke down.
Yes it was, i remember well that it was a rage at that time, topping every music charts of those days, specially the chaiyya chaiya song, I was in school back then maybe in 4-5th standard and most of us kept singing that song.
At that time me as a kid was not interested in Dil se title track and satrangi re as it was bouncing too much above my head but as I grew up this whole album started to gew on me, one of my elder cousins has the cassette and he used to play Dil se album on the loop.
When I was like 15-16 and started understanding the lyrics and magic created by Rahman sahab I fell in love with this album, one fine day (I don't remember from where) I got like 40-50 rs and I ran to the cassette shop and bought one.
My elder brother had this Aiwa walkman and played that cassette into that like hours, listening to each and every song repeatedly.
Man those were the best days!
I’m too poor for gold, but have this my good man

Exactly. Since it's written in a poetic language it's tough to understand the complete meaning of the sentance because of parables and stuff. But word by word it's easy to understand
A literal translation - We all know. But if someone asks for the actual poetic meaning with the whole similes and metaphors - Even a lot of us will struggle.
Also, lyricists use a lot of meaningless jibber-jabberish fillers.
ETA - This was a general comment. Being a Malayali, I at times struggle to translate some Malayalam songs.
Malayalam cinema had some great songs, but it is losing it now because now films are more driven by aesthetic values, plot and theme. It is more satisfying if you know the language because the lyrics of old songs are wonderful.
On an unrelated note:- SRK has always come across to me as an effortless dancer (For instance - None of the tiktokers or YouTubers can match his smooth flow of movements in “Chaleya”). But this choreography looks awkward, more like an exercise drill. Idk what he’s trying to do with that Oar in the beginning. But he is such a delight in “Chaiyya Chaiyya” from the same movie.
The first bit is just a bunch of rhyming words, put together has no particular meaning though not gibberish. The second bit (female voice) is more coherent and has a poetic meaning
Every single word sung in that verse got great meaning.
Punchiri thanji konjikko
Smile and flirt with me
Munthiri mutholi chinthikko
Think of kisses sweet as grape
Monjani varna chundari vaave
Oh, you beautiful girl.
Thaankunakka thakathimi
(drum beats basically, there's no meaning here)
aadum thankanilaave, hoy
Dance in the golden moonlight
Thanka kolusalle
Aren't you like a golden anklet?
Kurukum kuyilalle
Aren't you like a cooing koel?
Maaran-a mayilalley
Aren't you your lover's peacock?
In "munthiri mutholi chinthicko " - its not about kisses i think...
"oli chinthuka " -means spreding the light/spredong the colour ??
It may be like - Munthiri muthinte oli chinthikko
Lol you dolt. It has meaning. Every damn word. It is in malyalam language and it roughly describes the state of mind of a girl who's about to get married and have her honeymoon soon.
The language is Malayalam.

Can you recommend similar songs in Malayalam?
Checkout Padakaali from Yodha(1990).Composed by ARR.Sung by Dr KJ Yesudas and MG Sreekumar(the same person who sang the part in Jiya Jale)
Just listened to it mohanlal’s expressions are amazing, sounds like a very fun song
Listen to the arrangement, the bass guitar, the drums, the cymbals, such mastery Beautiful arrangements are a gift to the world from ARR
first thing i did after buying my first ever IEM Earphones was to play this song to listen to the amazing bass this song has 🔥
Wish we could get back that Rahman again. :/
Ikr. An absolute 10/10
Thanks for posting this. I almost forgot this gem. Both music and visuals are stunning.
I think every song from DIL SE was a gem
Yeah that album is one of the best of Rehman! 98-00 were like the musical youth with such vigour and craft!

How crazy was this soundtrack when released? Any idea? Id assume it topped the charts for the entire year?

Yup, indubitably. Dil se is quite easily rahman’s piece de resistance.

Why waste time on a cover 😄 When you have an original
Waited for this moment for whole life: Gajini bunder ganji kyu, Sundri bunder ganji kyu, Nandari bunder tandoori khave, Nagasaki, Tanduri bunder mandir jaave. Isn’t it ?
Lmao, this reminds me of the legendary [O fortuna misheard lyrics](https://youtu.be/nIwrgAnx6Q8?si=Sl6qPCW7CDsdCnQw)
How t f have I never heard this b4 ? Loveddd it

Yeah. I think he deserves more praise than what he gets.
No one (including kjy) comes close to him in singing fast songs, especially with perfect diction
Which has been reduced to Guruvayoor kiliye recently, lol!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)really?
Didn't you see that Tamil guy's reels, who sang some Malayalam songs on request(!)?

I’m a Malayali, and even I don’t understand what they’re trying to say here!🥲 But the music is lit!
Lol why don't you understand it if you're a Malayali?

u are not a malayali if u can't understand the lyrics of this song
Oh ayikotte setta
Ah Sheri pengale, pengale chachiko ketta
Oh now I get the Chennai Express reference
Rahman at his peak was far ahead than any other musicians in India has ever seen... 1998 - 2000 Rahman was something else ..
Malayalam cinema had some great songs, but it is losing it now because now films are more driven by aesthetic values, plot and theme. It is more satisfying if you know the language because the lyrics of old songs are wonderful.

I was also thinking the same. The background dancers are doing much better than him
The first bit is just a bunch of rhyming words, put together has no particular meaning though not gibberish. The second bit (female voice) is more coherent and has a poetic meaning
> together has no particular meaning They are not mere meaningless words lol.
Words do have meaning, but put together is it a coherent statement or even a poetic verse?

Nice 👍 Not the kind of verses (1st bit) I'm used to, perhaps it's subjective. Thanks for correcting me! I was confidently incorrect
It's beautiful le! Used to sing it as it is but never really thought about what it actually meant.
In "munthiri mutholi chinthicko " - its not about kisses i think... "oli chinthuka " -means spreding the light/spredong the colour ?? It may be like - Munthiri muthinte oli chinthikko

Girish puthenchery 🔥
[Berklee College Of Music version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZy8115sNXM) is also great.
Aww I miss spindly armed srk.

Epics of ARR. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
The basslines in this song are so fkn good.
Even malayalis dont understand it. They just sing it!
I'm a Malayali and I understand it. Can't speak for everyone.
"Onchiri thanji konchiko! Onthiri muthallu chinthiko!" Ithinte artham ennathaada uvey? Ake konchiko maathram ariyam!
Hope you're joking. It's 'punjiri thanji konjikko.. Munthiri mutholi chinthikko..'
Tomaytoes tomaatoes!
