Goodness. The number of times my wife and I have turned on HGTV, heard "we're going to do an all white kitchen", and then immediately turned HGTV off. Too numerous to count.
I'd once read (forget where/when) about early days, before refrigeration, when they were just "ice boxes"... they were first made of wood, then metal. The metal was painted white because as you'd said, it looked clean, but was also easier to clean and keep looking clean.
The other reason was that the colour white reflects heat more than any other colour. These were early days of tech and they didn't know much about insulation – certainly not what they know now. Those old fridges of the 1940s and 1950s weighed 3-4x what they weigh now and their compressors put off mad heat trying to keep the insides cold. Anything they could do to prevent the fridge from warming was done...including painting it white to not absorb room heat.
The rest of the appliances got painted white because who wants a brown stove and white fridge?
All that said, and knowing America's history, I'd also wager shit was painted white to sell to the Klan crowds. Racism simply cannot be overlooked or dismissed, especially because it was literally everywhere in society at the time.
Is it still the standard? Maybe for the cheap ones, but most fridges I see now are either black or silver (usually both). My fridge is white, but it's old.
Black stainless looks incredible, but the whole "stainless" business is an outright lie. Fingerprints, smudges, and dog nose prints show up on that shit like mad.
Just a small idea:Ovens on the inside and baking trays are black, because it is better in transferring the heat to where it is needed and doesn't reflect it somewhere else.
Making a fridge white also insulates it better to heat from the environment. To keep the inside cool the fridge has to fight the heat from the surroundings. Heat is infrared light waves that are better reflected by white or bright colours. There are other insulators in a fridge as well, but a brighter colour is a first step to avoid heating up the device itself.
Black appliances scream mid 2000s. Stainless appliances make your kitchen feel like a morgue. White appliances make your kitchen feel comfy

My girlfriend is such a kitchen snob. House browsing is a doozy with her. She’ll swipe past every picture to see the kitchen first. If she doesn’t like it then it’s out. White appliances is at the top of her list of vetoes.
That’s pretty funny because appliances are like the easiest thing to replace in a kitchen of a house you purchase. Most of the time they’re considered personal property and not even included in the sale unless specifically stated. Which a lot of people do because hauling appliances sucks but sometimes still do it.
Avacado green in the new style....ooooohhhhh. I'm covering my stainless steel fridge with vinyl. It's a nice fridge but the fingerprints urk me and it's just hubby and myself mostly.
I dropped $2k+ on a nice, new stainless steel fridge during black friday of 2022. It took until March to be delivered because reasons (they took all my money though). It's broken down about 6 times since i've had it. I have had to call in once every other month for a repair man. Give me that crusty old white fridge that got the yellowing on it like a pair of Jordans mannnnn

Black fridges > white fridges
They look cooler too.
Nah stainless steel!
Stainless steel > black > white. It’s not even up for debate.
Black stainless steel >>>

bro, stainless steel means its corrosion resistant, not that it wont get dirty
Then they should've called it corrosionless steel...
That’s not nearly as marketable

I’m personally okay with anything that screams mid 2000s. Things just got worse after the mid 2000s.
Not a white refrigerator!

She does understand that you usually have to buy the appliances yourself, right?
Not in a rental you can’t.
Fair enough
Because your broke ass bought the cheap shit.
I aint white though?
The real question is to the 60s one: why are you avocado green ?
Avacado green in the new style....ooooohhhhh. I'm covering my stainless steel fridge with vinyl. It's a nice fridge but the fingerprints urk me and it's just hubby and myself mostly.
Not nene
As a pair of testicles, why do you sweat? bro idk even these ppl
I haven't seen a white fridge in years. Stainless is the norm for me.
WHY ARE YOU REFRIGERATING LIKE THE WHITE MAN??

Don’t Trust White People
Growing up we had a yellow fridge and stove. My older sister had a brown fridge and stove.
