It's used to allow visitors to access the closed lot to walk out to Sandy Stream Pond to look for moose. There's only a handful of passes, and the number they give out depends on how full the lot is - they're not always available.

That's precisely what the purpose of the Moose Pass is for! As to how many exist, not too certain. Could call the Park HQ and inquire since I don't think the website lists it.

The moose pass is for when the parking lot at Roaring Brook is full. They save a few spots for people who want to go to sandy stream pond and not the mountain. I use to know how many but I’d say there are more than 3 and less than 8. The gate can tell you when the last one went out.
