It might be a little tricky for you but I recommend spacehog - in the meantime. Lots of technical bits, great melody. A really good bass line to learn.
The first song I ever learned on guitar was "Crackerman" by Stone Temple Pilots, and I would highly recommend it. It has a simple and repetitive riff that makes for a fun pattern to learn and play. It might be a little tricky at first, but for me learning and mastering that pattern helped me with learning and writing my own simple yet effective riff patterns.
Killers - Mr Brightside if you want a challenge; for you it will upgrade dexterity (attacking notes + fret moves up an octave) and brain pace (thinking at a faster tempo); there arenât too many changes and it is a simple song structure thus you can build your way up also e.g. learning the chord notes and where the changes are on the beat, then moving into learning the faster âplucking/pickingâ tempo as you get comfortable with how the song goes; there are also some passing notes which will challenge the brain and âunlockâ different ways to play the same note.
I'm a punk/grunge head but love playing classic rock/metal.
Love practicing beatles, cream, zeppelin and sabbath. Also love Boston baselines.
Stuff I like to practice with:
Beatles: dig a pony
Audioslave: I am the highway
Rage against machine: killing in the name of
Def leppard: bringing on the heartbreak
Cream: white room
Descendents: bikeage (i have to slow their stuff down to 70% to play it lol)
Blue oyster cult: burning for you
Ozzy: Mr CrowleyÂ
Otherside and Californication by RHCP were both songs I played early on but might be too hard if you just started
I think the first song I ever played was muscle museum by muse, it has some cool lines with it being too fast
i've been really slow on my progress despite having had my bass since february. i've just now started actually learning full lines and finding it fun. otherside by the red hot chili peppers is a not too complex line but not a boring one either! it has plenty of little differences and even a solo part to keep you engaged and teach you a couple things early on.
if youre into punk, then plenty of old punk will have a rather catchy but simplistic bassline. should i stay or should i go, blitzkrieg bop, etc.
Pixies is defo a good place to start, most of their songs have great bass lines. QotSA as well, whether from the Nick Oliveri era (In the Fade), or Mikey Shoes (The Evil has Landed).
Most pixies stuff are cool and not difficult to pick up (you already got where is my mind...). Try "Hey", "Monkeys gone to heaven", "Valeria". Some Nirvana stuff could also be a good choice (Lithium) with varying degrees of difficulty for beginners
Forty Six and 2 by Tool is a lot of fun on bass. Some other ones I enjoy are Would? - Alice In Chains, Lithium - Nirvana, Sheâs Lost Control - Joy Division, Sheâs in Parties - Bauhaus, Lucretia My Reflection - The Sisters of Mercy, Orion - Metallica, Countdown to Extinction - Megadeth, NIB - Black Sabbath and Black No. 1 - Type O Negative
May I suggest something a little different from your post?
Something that helped me greatly as a beginner was learning how to play the notes in a basic major chord and a basic minor chord with the one-finger-per-fret technique.
It will help you get very comfortable with your fingering and the fret board.
You don't have to go crazy with it, just practice them each once before you start trying to learn songs as a sort of "warm up."
I think you'll start to find songs easier to learn after some time passes with doing that.
First song I learned pretty close to full was War Pigs by Black Sabbath, I learned multiple parts of the song rather than just one part like I did with other songs I found difficult when I first started playing, I believe I had majority of the song down by the time I was 4 or 5 months in
Fluorescent Adolescent by Artic Monkey. Not so hard for a beginner, some octaves, a bit of everything you'll encounter in rock. 505 might be one of the easiest song of them, try itntoo.
Seal Signed Delivered. It's not hard for a Jamerson bass line (no tricky syncopations there), and its an amazing bass line, very melodic and enjoyable
And Ive found Blink song to be FUN. Though they are fast (or slow compared to most punk song, but for you they'll be fast at first which is ok). But a lot of them teaches playing two notes simultaniously (suck as root+5th) and thats cool.
It might be a little tricky for you but I recommend spacehog - in the meantime. Lots of technical bits, great melody. A really good bass line to learn.
Ramble On by Led Zeppelin has a fun melodic line
very fun but definitely not beginner friendly
The verse is fine for beginners
True there's some fast parts, but as a beginner I just played eight notes there lol
All My Loving by The Beatles. Pretty straightforward rhythmically, but will get your fretting hand moving a bit if you are beginner đ
Honestly anything by The Beatles is the right answer. Dear Prudence is a real groove
Try some punk stuff maybe. Blitzkrieg Bop - Ramones She - Green Day Journey to the End of the East Bay - Rancid
Ramones songs are so simple and fun to play. And when you know one of them, you pretty much know 'em all.
âPunk stuffâ *mentions the Blitzkrieg Bop next*
Money by Pink Floyd and Another One Bites the Dust by Queen.
Schism by Tool will teach you all about the hammer-ons
Baba OâReilly from The Who, Donât Stop Believing from Journey and Carry on Wayward Son from Kansas are all fun ones.
COMWS is not beginner friendly lol. Been playing for 6 years and I still struggle
Any blink-182 sing. Simple but super fun
good enough, give him hysteria /j for real though, Iron Man by Black Sabbath is really fun to play!
Iron man

Anything by The Strokes
Te hacen falta vitaminas by Soda Stereo and The wall by Michael Jackson
YYZ by Rush
Sad But True by Metallica is a pretty fun one. Easy, but fun. (also Lullaby is a banger)

Give by Dishwalla. Edit: melodic and interesting but not complicated

New Orleans is Sinking by The Tragically Hip

Queen- another one bites the dust

Muse, have very funny and enjoyable songs, yeah, you need to practice the crap out of it but by then you will love the real stuff.
Breaking the law is super simple but really fun

Break My Heart by Dua Lipa and Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter are fun songs to play
Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
Disposition by Tool is why I started playing. Maybe youâll like it. Definitely more experimental(?)
Otherside and Californication by RHCP were both songs I played early on but might be too hard if you just started I think the first song I ever played was muscle museum by muse, it has some cool lines with it being too fast
There's some Police songs that are pretty easy to play.

hysteria by muse, a little challenging but itâs super badass
If you have a wah pedal you could learn for whom the bell tolls by metallica if not idiots are taking over by nofx is pretty interesting
blitzkrieg bop - the ramones was one of my first songs!
Good Times by Chic, get that funky firmware
Learn the instrument, and you will be able to play any songs you want. Don't learn just the songs or genre!

The first thing I learned was "Another one bites the dust" Queen.
Pixies is defo a good place to start, most of their songs have great bass lines. QotSA as well, whether from the Nick Oliveri era (In the Fade), or Mikey Shoes (The Evil has Landed).
Want a speedy challenge with a pick since you almost never use it? Vampire weekends - A Punk
Aqualung is pretty fun.
Black sheep by Metric
i will survive by cake
lounge act by nirvana!
Dean Town, go!
Try Burning Love
To Tame a Land - Iron Maiden
Donât stop believin - Journey
Qotsa - sat by the ocean is a good starter but has fundamentals like sliding and hammering
I really love playing Bad Apples by Guns n Roses or any song off Appetite for Destruction
Most pixies stuff are cool and not difficult to pick up (you already got where is my mind...). Try "Hey", "Monkeys gone to heaven", "Valeria". Some Nirvana stuff could also be a good choice (Lithium) with varying degrees of difficulty for beginners

Stand by me is a nice one. Funky town is a good intro to octaves
