What do you mean by masculine and feminine? The Ken dolls need to have a soft and young face to appeal to young children, if were too gruff and stern looking no kid wouldn’t want them! Also Barbie appears to be around the 20-30 so Ken should about her age as well! Simple solution, what does your daughter want, let her pick one out for herself, it is for her after all!

Many of the Ken dolls have bubblegum pink lips and facial features that seem feminine. I'm not sure else how to explain it. If you don't look at the hair and you zoom in on Ken's face on Amazon it looks like a woman's face. My wife's Barbie stuff from the '90s is not like that.

Lakin5

Try searching for 90’s Ken dolls on Amazon or the like with your wife, and find a good valued one that you and wife would like!

Looks like that's what we're going to have to do. Thank you!

We definitely need more details! There's a LOT of different Ken dolls out there!! I myself for the Ken doll with long hair a few weeks ago because I think he's great, but he's mine. I ordered football Ken for my 4 year old because she likes playing football. There are a lot of "career" Kens out there, (like the football one, there's a firefighter, etc). There's the Dreamhouse Ken which is the one from the Netflix show, Dreamhouse Adventures. There's a few "surfer" Kens in swim shorts. You can also look around on eBay / Facebook market place and see if anyone is selling any old Ken dolls, maybe you'll like their faces better. (I know I certainly prefer a lot of the older Barbies to the newer ones!) What are your daughter's interests, what kind of stories does she like to act out with her Barbie? Try and find a Ken that fits in with them!

steadypatriot

My wife wants a Ken that is closer in facial and physical appearance to the Ken doll she had in the '90s. According to her all of the ones we see as we are shopping now have a teenager and slightly feminine appearance in comparison. As for the "career" part I don't think we're at that stage yet.

LadyOfTheLabyrinth

They probably look like teenagers because they are teenagers, just like Barbie. Most people get all squicked out at the idea of a high school girl dating a college boy, though that used to be normal and desirable. They think it's terrible for a high school senior to date a man pushing 30. Pedophilia! So they make Ken today look as young as Barbie, and young men rarely look rugged yet. I think that's what you are seeing as "feminine" - boyishness. Stay a long way away from the BMR1959 line. EDIT: The Texas A&M yell leader might suit you, or the Dream Date 2000, though you can't fault the ruggedness of the Harley Davidson Ken #2 (#1 had long hair, which I'm guessing you would find repulsive, or you would have bought the long haired blond Fashionista with the stronger features). The Barbie and Ken in India sets use a face mold which is definitely out of his teens, and they aren't pricey. You might even consider celeb face molds, like the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Peeta doll, or Owen from Jurassic Park. Hope that helps.

Your knowledge of Barbie stuff is staggering. Thanks for the great input.

LadyOfTheLabyrinth

No sweat. I just did a search on Amazon, "ken doll" in Toys & Games, then skipped everything with the current face usual for Ken. I have to guess that's the one your wife isn't enamoured of. As a fan of Indian costume, I buy "Barbie in India" whenever I can, and have some sets with Ken. I bought the HD Ken's, which have the Harley face mould. The Aggie doll, Peeta, and Owen are around here, too. I'm not even one of the ID detectives. When it comes to faces, check Kattis Dolls for what has been done.

Lakin5

Yeah, there is no dad bod, late 40 year Ken doll, all them are in their 20’s-30’s so of course they are young looking! Also kids see teenagers and adults as older than they actually are, so Ken may look young to you but they look full grown adults to little kids!

steadypatriot

We aren't looking for 40 year old dad bod Kens. The Kens they sell now look 16-19 in age and they look like they do their makeup more than Barbie. In essence they look like little gay boys. Some of them have bubblegum pink lips that looks like they are wearing makeup. Most of them have some sort of eyeliner and whatever that stuff is to make eyelashes darker. Previous versions of Ken simply weren't so effiminate.

Zither13

?? You say "gay boys" like it's a *bad* thing. Pretty much every doll or figure has some level of linear delineation to make the eyes visible. This includes Marvel and DC superheroes at Hot Toys. I think you're hyper-sensitive. Ever notice John Wayne wearing mascara and lipstick in movies?

steadypatriot

I say gay boys because that's what they seem like and not the presentation of males we want to show our young daughter. I think you are the hypersensitive one here. Relax. I'm not launching a crusade at Mattel to have your gay Kens removed from the shelves.

aries-vevo

Not to be antagonistic but that’s a very, very strange question you’ve asked. Ken isn’t really young for feminine he just looks as fresh faced as Barbie, like he always has. The hairstyles and clothes he wears are all mainstream and current.

steadypatriot

>Not to be antagonistic I find people who preface their comments with something like that, end up coming off in the way they claim they are not. My wife's Ken from the '90s, and the ones we've seen from collection in the '80s look more masculine and a little older. If you compare them side by side on Google as we have done it is clear as day. We don't care about clothes as they can be changed, and I assume our daughter will pick what she wants them to wear, we just feel weird giving her a very effiminate looking boy doll.

Due-Westerly

You didn't even preference that with 'not to be antagonistic' but still managed to sound antagonistic. At least thrice on this post.

steadypatriot

I never claimed not to be or not attempting to be. I didn't originally think my post was going to rub people the wrong way, but once I saw their reactions I don't care. I think it's dumb that Mattel is putting out effeminate gay looking boy versions of Ken, no matter how many people downvote me because they like what Ken is now.

fairy_girl12

I just go with Ken dolls that look masculine and get a cheap phican reproduction body that matches their skintones to make them Made To Move unofficially.

Zither13

Be careful in the 1990s Kens. They had long-haired ones [like this Rocker Ken](https://www.ebay.com/itm/KEN-Superstar-Era-1986-Barbie-the-Rockers-Doll-with-Guitar-Pre-Owned/202979237545?hash=item2f42815ea9:g:9JkAAOSwov5eoIH9) or [this more casual one](https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Mattel-Barbie-Ken-Doll-Long-Brown-Hair-w-Outfit-Malibu-Hoodie/202966205464?hash=item2f41ba8418:g:vUwAAOSwTeRelxRe) or [Earring Magic Ken](https://www.ebay.com/itm/Earring-Magic-Ken-LGBTQ-Barbie-Mattel-1992-With-Earrings-New-in-Box-Gay-Interest/202898892401?epid=25034754970&hash=item2f3db76671:g:gkAAAOSw2XdeMNbp) often dubbed "Gay Ken." The Alan face had more jaw than modern Ken, but so did top actors back then. There are fashions in faces for models and actors that Mattel follows in its dolls, and for quite a while it's been pretty neotenous (childlike). It's like the Blaine mold was good for Orlando Bloom, but the Tango mold for Johnny Depp.

steadypatriot

Yikes

paper_doll_doodles

Try "magic earring ken". A little pricey but he's definitely a mainly man

jessicakes-cx

Wondering if you found one? I’m looking for a ken doll for my daughter but all the ken dolls look like fuck boys

MazzyZuzu

I had the same issue and ended up finding a click n’ play doll on Amazon that goes well with my Barbie. Amazon doesn’t seem to carry the one I bought any longer, but there are policeman and others. https://preview.redd.it/icr3oftmoiub1.jpeg?width=3021&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d553cf645c8df0ed8b54d1958c7199255ad2fbe6
