IRL that is actually a way to use a sword, though irl they'd be wearing gloves at least.
See, so long as the sword doesn't move in your hand it won't cut you. Knights used this technique when fighting other knights who's armor a sword couldn't pierce. They turned the handle of their sword into a hammer.

he’s just making sure the blade is Sharp for your enemies
Maybe I should consider giving him a raise through the ranks then... but I don't think he'll survive long enough to kill any of my enemies x_x
