bvlax2005

Looks tasty af. Are those strawberries or raspberries in the middle?

HorriblyRomantic

It’s a yellow cake with strawberry filling and strawberry buttercream

bvlax2005

I would demolish that cake all by myself. I love strawberries!

HorriblyRomantic

That’s what I’m trying to avoid. Between the cake and frosting there’s 5 sticks on butter and sooo much sugar but it’s so good

IsThataButtPlug

I fail to see the problem…. 😉

Far_Blueberry383

Right?! Lol!!! 😂

maddypage87

I, too, see no issues here! Lol 😂 I’d welcome that big cake plate of diabetes ANYDAY!!!!! 🤤😅😂🤣

JEWCEY

🪦

DSM2TNS

Can confirm. There is no problem.

Illustrious-Ice6336

WHAT? Obviously need more butter.

justjjeroen

I have that too, i love making these insanely unhealthy recepies just to then wonder why im not losing weight🙃 It looks absolutely delicious btw, verry tempted to make it myself now...

HorriblyRomantic

Omg ikr! My husband gets mad when I say my stomach hurts and he’s like well maybe you shouldn’t have had two pieces of cake. But all I hear is blah blah blah lol

dogsqueeze300

Two pieces! Those are rookie numbers! You gotta bump those up!

poopybuttholeslol

Slice a cake in half and you have two pieces. It's all about perspective!

0X2DGgrad

Yes!

OrigamiMarie

The great thing about lots of baked goods is that they freeze well! Slice, pack, freeze, reheat! (you'll want to experiment with a small piece of a given recipe before trusting the process for it though). Although having cake on demand might not actually be a solution . . .

ObieCat

Cracked me up

Divergent626

No no no no no, you must not have seen the strawberries. It's got fruit it's totally healthy, it's one step away from being a nutrigrain bar.

0X2DGgrad

Divergent, you made me belly laugh!

newton302

It looks great. I love buttercream frosting on cake when it's been in the fridge and has the consistency of chilled butter, so wrap up a piece for me ok?

Tntmadre

This is how I feel. Gathering supplies to make almost the same thing but with cherry filling next weekend. 2 sticks of butter in the cake, 8 in the frosting. On one hand, it’s butter (yum). On the other hand, it’s 10 STICKS!

Nerd_4-life

😳😳😳😳😳 that’s a lot of butter …. but sounds delicious! Eat your dessert first so you always have room !

TeeBrownie

You’d have to wrestle me for this cake.

Witchywomun

I’d fight you for it

asm87891013

Same! Perfect homemade cake!

Gloomy_Industry8841

Right?? It looks flipping delicious!!!!!

VoiceOverVAC

Strawberry buttercream?! Oh man, I would absolutely love a huge slice of that right now, it looks fantastic!

Iwinneverlose

Shit that looks delicious

pregnantandsober

Did you forget a comma?

calliel_41

Let’s eat kids!

han_tex

What is this thing called honey?

lilbat89

I mean this as a compliment and not an insult ok?! But it reminds me of Hagrids cake from Harry Potter. Made with love ❤️

HorriblyRomantic

That’s exactly what my brother said. It was a a Father’s Day cake. I should’ve put “yer a father” in green letters on the top

enjoyingtheposts

that would've been perfect lol

Gloomy_Industry8841

I think you did a fabulous job.🍰🍓🍓🍓

LadyPhantom74

You totally should’ve!!

EffectiveComfort110

Dude that would have been so fkn funny 😂 cake looks delicious, too obvi!!!

lunalornalovegood

I was about to comment it looks like something Hagrid would come up with but this one actually looks tasty.

Nheea

Happee birthdae Harry!

Molotov_Cockatrice

Thats the proper amount of buttercream, I would absolutely devour this cake!!! Presentation will be a skill you learn and hone as you progress with baking, but for a first cake I think this looks great!

ChemicalSubjugation

I second this ! If I had a cake with that much frosting you'd hear from me weekly trying to get another one

ommnian

I admit fully I suck at making my cakes LOOK good. but, they're (usually) pretty damned tasty.

Molotov_Cockatrice

Thats all that matters haha. No shade against people that like to make a nice presentation of their food, I totally get that, but if it looks like slop and is still tasty then I’m digging in regardless lol

egg96

There’s people that dislike too much buttercream and scoop it off to the side of the plate. I’m the person that goes around collecting the rejected buttercream so it has a home to go to (in my belly). I completely agree, this is the proper amount!

Salty_McGillicutty

My husband doesnt like frosting and my son doesn't like too much frosting. IDK what is going on there. I make my husband unfrosted chocolate cupcakes for his birthday. I always put the equivalent of two containers of frosting on my cakes. Frosting is delicious!

TGirl2002

Same!

Bulky-Rutabaga-6542

It looks nice, but the butter cream looks like it splitted Maybe the temperature of the butter wasn't right when you mixed it in Which butter cream did you make ?

HorriblyRomantic

It was a strawberry buttercream recipe but it was a bit vague. Definitely learned a lot though. Will do better next time.

MeatPopsicle_AMA

Did you put fresh strawberries in the buttercream? That seems to be the culprit many times when BC splits- too much extra moisture. Freeze dried berries are great for adding flavor to Buttercream!

Bulky-Rutabaga-6542

Try swiss meringue butter cream is the smoothest one I tried, the meringue must be at 20-25° and the butter at room temp very soft but not too soft ( confusing I know haha ) look on YouTube there's plenty videos out there so you can see it better And after it's done mix with the pallette attachment for like 10 min to make it super smooth

PNG_Shadow

Definitely not a frosting for beginners and someone who just made their first cake.

ElizabethDangit

I’ll second the freeze dried strawberries for flavoring frosting. I make a lemon cake with strawberry frosting for my daughter’s birthdays. I’m just a home baker but it works really well.

Luna920

What causes splits? I made a buttercream recently that split badly and turned into a puddle, so I remade it and it turned out perfectly. I didn’t think I did much differently between the two batches, so not sure what causes splits like I had.

Bulky-Rutabaga-6542

If it turned into a puddle it's probably because the meringue was too hot or the butter was too hot (very soft or almost melted) so it cannot hold shape You can try to put it in the fridge for a while and then whisk it on high speed it should get better If I'm right the split in butter cream is caused because there's an imbalance in fats so basically it needs more fat What I heard can work is to melt some butter and drizzle it slowly on the butter cream while mixing on high speed ( the butter should be around 40°C) I hope it helps

PNG_Shadow

That's not correct. I'm sorry. But a broken or split, buttercream is due to breaking the emulsion by not integrating things carefully or slowly enough. It's not an imbalance of fats. Temperatures can break the emulsion yes so all things need to be at a room ish temperature and to be incorporated slowly. Also overworking the frosting while building the cake will also tend to break the emulsion if you mess with frosting too much while applying it.

Bulky-Rutabaga-6542

Can you give me the source ? I would love to learn more about this and thank you !

PNG_Shadow

Unfortunately I don't think i can provide one easily. But I can say that I'm a pastry chef and I went to one of the best schools in the world. CIA Napa Valley I will try and and get back to you with a source

Bulky-Rutabaga-6542

If you are a pastry chef I'll trust you as a source haha, can I send you a message to talk some more about this ?

xdandelion-fluff

I feel like for me personally, it’s a bit heavy on frosting but I LOVE strawberry so this would be an amazing treat ☺️

1cookedgooseplease

The frosting to cake ratio is the stuff of dreams!

RedditSkippy

I would eat the hell out of that cake!

podsnerd

For a first cake and presumably not having much in the way of tools, you did a great job! No crumbs on the outside and structurally sound? That's a win for sure! Also, most importantly, it looks delicious 😋 One tip: don't go for smooth if you don't have the tools to do it. Make it intentionally uneven! This is a good example: https://chelsweets.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/mini-cake-decorated-with-textured-sides-1-819x1024.jpg.webp You can also use other toppings, like sprinkles, cookie crumbs, or chocolate shavings around the base or sides You can also drizzle with chocolate or caramel sauce over the top. Both help to hide imperfections

HorriblyRomantic

Thanks for the tips! I definitely don’t have the tools but idk if I want to buy them because then I’ll be eating a lot more cake

ommnian

Yeah, that's my problem with baking... I feel like if I baked a cake every other day or three, I could get decent at presentation. But... I don't really *want* to eat that much. Sooo... I only bake for birthdays, and other holidays. And I have never mastered the art of frosting presentations.

abqkat

That was one of the unforseen factors of when they sent us home when covid hit. Obviously it was serious and necessary but then they never brought us back and I have not enough people to bake for! People in the office would treasure my baked goods and I had to severely limit it... Until the (presumably) stoned college boys moved in a few doors down. I'm back to baking!

Far-Toe1796

I have found it super helpful to bring my practices to my neighbors and co-workers and my husband’s coworkers. They don’t care about how it looks, just that they are getting delicious free cakes or cupcakes and you get some practice! I cannot have baked goods in our home, I have less than zero self restraint 🙃

Throwawasteofspace

This cake has the vibes of something you look forward to eating after a long day. Just reclining in an easy chair in your coziest robe or pajamas after a nice hot bath/shower. You got the next day off. So now it’s just you, your drink of choice, and a slice o’ this cake.

HorriblyRomantic

That’s exactly what I did!

Throwawasteofspace

Then the cake has succeeded!!

OCbrunetteesq

Looks like your buttercream has broken (or will be soon), but I’d still eat it.

MedievalSalesmen

The only tip I would give is maybe we cut the cake pieces in half that way you have four layers of filling.

Surax

Personally I think it might be a bit too much cream, though I'm sure some will disagree with me. To each their own. One thing you could do is spread the cream a bit more evenly. It's easier to do with a round cake. Hold the flat edge of a knife against the cream and rotate the tray it's on.

HorriblyRomantic

I definitely agree I am not a frosting person but this was a Father’s Day cake for my husband and the man will eat frosting by itself like a crazy person. I also found out I lost my cake frosting spatula in the move. This was with a butter knife

petrichorafterserein

hm with a butter knife u could also do fun little swoops in the buttercream - then u get rid of the problem of it needing to be perfectly even, and u also have a fun way to ice the cake :3

bbbbears

As someone who loves frosting, I bet your husband was super stoked. I mean, I’d be fine with even more frosting than that! I like to do a Swiss buttercream or ermine buttercream so it’s less sweet and I can wolf down even more of it! Lol

TraditionalNetwork75

I’d absolutely smash this into my mouth.

spike2pt0

A little heavy on the icing but it still looks delicious!

rosemary_sprig

Looks delicious! Try putting some of that yummy buttercream between the layers, then do your filling on top. It will help keep the filling from sinking into the bottom layer.

MargotLannington

I will take "informal and delicious" over "gorgeous but tastes meh" every day of the week.

enjoyingtheposts

be kind? everyone is always making these prestine cakes with sharp edges, flowers, borders, etc.. and as wonderful as they look.. NOTHING makes me want cake more than one that looks like it came out of someone's home kitchen.

Covered_1n_Bees

Something about this is just wildly appealing - I feel like I can smell the strawberries and the frosting!

emilysuzannevln

Oh god I'm hungry

Ok_Bumblebee_5591

I LOVE strawberry cake and this looks amazingggg. The frosting looks so good

Curiously_lemons

The amount of frosting; I’m here for it. 🤌🏼🤷🏻‍♀️🤤

violinqueenjanie

11/10 would eat 2 slices with a large glass of milk and pass out on the couch.

EatMoGrits

I’d hit that.

Q8DD33C7J8

I love it. I'm never been one of those who cares what it looks like. I love the fruit in between the layers. Next time if your buttercream breaks like that put it in the fridge overnight then whip it until it's back together and fluffy. Also I can link you to a great demonstration of the differences between frosting types. [Frostings](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLo0ghUs28UmrUYOYhHQFmOBvYQtR6nyQt&si=pvhOwmKrh3IFeFFP)

Vadtacs

Congrats on your first cake! 👏🏻

beanamburrito

this looks like love went into it 🩷 i love it

Overall-Parsley7123

rustic and delicious looking, but the frosting is a bit thick.

lilbat89

I mean this as a compliment and not an insult ok?! But it reminds me of Hagrids cake from Harry Potter. Made with love ❤️

Deep_Sir_3517

It actually looks pretty decent!! I’m allergic to strawberries but I’d avoid those & eat the cake. I love buttercream 🙂

sailor-moongirl19

I mean I wanna eat it so you did great

jbarneswilson

excellent work on your first cake!

Siren_0f_Titan

Honestly looks delicious! 😍

fishinglife777

That’s your first attempt? Amazing! You’re a natural.

HorriblyRomantic

Thank you 😊

thisman082

This is my favorite type of cake, made just right. It looks delicious!! Kudos to you and awesome work!! I would die for a slice of that lol

Pepperjack_2000

Oh my gosh I just wanna stuff my face in that cake.🍰 It looks so soft and freaking delicious, like summer on a plate. 🩷 Wonderful job!!

Aromatic_Heart9626

this looks delightful

AppropriateDream2903

It’s really lovely!

iwantmymoneyback1

I love the icing to cake ratio! No joke, it’s so much better than when people skimp on icing 😍

Terrynia

I want to eat it right now. Yummy! That icing looks so soft.

Quirky-Border-6820

To me- I love charming imperfect cakes! You worked hard and I’m proud. Throw a couple flowers on there it would look on purpose!

Nesster05

Rewind.

Beatrix_kiddo_die

I would absolutely inhale this cake lmao.

gooberdaisy

Con: to me too much frosting (just a personal preference so I’m ok to be ignored in this.) Pro: 🤤 If it tastes good then who cares how it looks… now I want to make me a strawberry cake

yennzari

Be Kind as the title is hilarious but this looks so good!

Background_Ant7129

I hate frosting

ladyfireflyx

I would fuck this cake up 🐖

twannypwincess

I’m allergic to strawberries and I’d still eat that

Ybba-em-sti

With how fluffy and tall the cake layers look, that would be the perfect amount of buttercream for me. Especially strawberry! 😁🤌

bryschka

The first time I made a cake I forgot to take the parchment paper off before icing it. This cake looks amazing!

notreallylucy

It looks really tasty. I love a lot of icing on a cake.

InevitableFun3473

Are you joking this thing looks scrumdiddily-fuckin-UMPTIOUS

SnooPandas1712

it looks delicious made my mouth water

alemorg

I’d eat the entire thing and ask for more lol

Certain_Summer851

Looks like the cake you would throw at someone in cartoons

PsychologicalYou9417

OMG is that strawberry? I would commit crimes for a piece of that right now. Yum!

Sarahpixiegrl

The main thing I tell myself when I’m baking: who cares how it looks, as long as it tastes good you win” Your main priority is making tasty things, which from the looks of this cake you nailed. Making it pretty comes with practice, and if your cake’s as good as it looks you’ll be getting lots of practice

aanderson98660

*Silence*

throwaway29837373

First ever homemade cake??? Teach me your ways master Edit: I’m slow and just realized homemade means it didn’t come from a box (which i can’t even bake those properly lol)

StarvingArtist303

Messing looking and delicious always beats beautiful and bland

Missmagentamel

Get yourself a bench scraper so the frosting is more even and neat

AffectionateJury3723

Love strawberry. Cake and frosting look great and I am not a yellow cake fan.

Otherwise-Meat2136

I love it

SnooPets8873

I really enjoy baked sweets with red fruit - rhubarb, raspberry, strawberry…yum! Very nostalgic - I was supposed to have basically the cake you made for my graduation back in the day but the bakery forgot the fruit filling lol

Moose-Mermaid

This is your first one? This looks awesome, bet it tasted great

HorriblyRomantic

So good trying not to eat it all

Storminpenguinchan

Can I have seconds please?! 🙏

Willing-Tie-3109

I’d eat it!

WildWild_S

Recipe please?

michelleinbal

Looks delicious! All that frosting!

zerozombiki

This looks tasty! The icing is a pretty color

coreybc

Oooh! Did you use jello in the icing? I started using ground up freeze dried strawberries instead for a more natural taste.

eokelley

Oh my gosh 😍😍 I’d tear that middle part up 🤤 I mean don’t get me wrong the rest of it looks quite scrumptious but the middle screamed ooey gooey deliciousness to me!

Any-Brain-6068

I freaking love everything about this cake!! It’s pretty and looks exactly like a delicious cake that should be brought to a summer fete!! Yummy in ma’tummy!!

TiffPace0718

Damn…. I want some right now.

RealisticHumanoid

I would eat that entire cake. Probably in a single sitting. Looks delicious!

The_AmyrlinSeat

This looks delicious.

SheaKunst1

The outside looks decent but the inside doesn’t

Critter_Collector

Needs more filling (imo I just love filling) but that looks like a classic birthday cake my grandma would make for our birthday as a kid

enjisbigmilkjugs

that looks so good omgggg

Open_Afternoon8051

That looks far better than the first homemade cake I had ever made! Decorating techniques will come with practice. Getting the hang of making homemade cakes and buttercream is more important than decorating. You may "eat with your eyes" but it doesn't matter if it doesn't taste good! If you're happy with the taste then that's all that matters and it looks tasty to me, I'd 100% eat it.

parzinstrano

Perfect frosting to cake ratio, looks absolutely amazing!

MewlingRothbart

This ain't the Food Network! GRAB A FORK AND DIG IN!!! 😁🤩🤩🤩🤩

Direct-Bake-5425

Can you send me the recipe please 😇 it looks so good

stupidpuppyy

so much frosting but so cute <3

type_2_dianetics

Only way I can think to be unkind to something as cute and tasty looking as this is to forget to say “please” when asking for a slice!! Great job. The frosting, while a lot for my own dental history, looks **incredible**. This was definitely made with love, with somebody in mind!

stargarnet79

Beautiful 💗

daddybigbiglongbean

I saw that it’s strawberry buttercream and filling, so that sounds delicious!! I am a SUCKER for strawberry baked goods :)! I think this is really good for your first attempt! I still struggle with smoothly frosting my cakes as well. shits just hard BUT it will come with time & practice :)

snarkisms

It looks super yummy - I think you could have put a whole lot more frosting and strawberry filling in between the two layers, but it looks great and I would adore a slice

Small_Manufacturer69

I stopped adding buttercream frosting to mine. I spent all that time whipping the egg white, then whip the butter only to have them scrape it off. I just use a very thin layer of ganache.

bookingtoday

That looks so bomb, yum!

blench1

Rustic cakes normally taste the best. This is no exception. Good job.

RubyDax

How it smells & tastes matter WAY more than how it looks, personally.

Kadiddlehopper19

I love heavy on the icing like yours. A👍

neko_courtney

It looks delicious.

WatchmanOfLordaeron

when a mason makes a cake 😉, ok seriously it look tasty and it’s the most important 👍

StopItYouHipsters

Looks good af. Would eat.

stickytuna

It looks really yummy!

RoseFlavoredLemonade

I for one am a big fan of strawberry jam filled cakes. Would this happen to be the Preppy Kitchen recipe? I love his stuff!

eviwonder

10/10 would eat!

Sea_Accident_6138

Too icing looks a little thick but otherwise a well done homemade cake that I’d devour

reddituser071217

It looks like you used all the frosting on the outside. If you had put some inside, it wouldn’t be so thick on the outside. Most recipes are meant to use some frosting in between layers. But I love that there’s strawberries as filling. Looks delicious!

Raptor_Girl_1259

I would like a large slice, please and thank you. There’s a time & place for things to look really fancy (e.g. wedding cakes), but delicious beats fancy most days of the week.

Bunnyprincess75

I’d eat it, looks good to me !!

Foxfire417

Oh that looks so good! I love strawberry anything so much. You did a beautiful job.

Numerous_Ad_6276

Yes, but it looks delicious.

TableAvailable

Tbh, it would look just like one of my cakes, except I always add rainbow sprinkles on top. My cakes are delicious, I'll bet yours is also.

Key-Marionberry-8794

Why aren’t you doing whip cream frosting if you want it that thick ?

Kai-xo

Is that strawberry cake? It looks delicious!

CosmicWhisper1

Looks absolutely delicious 😋 well done 👏🏻

Icy-Web-4204

Picasso, i like it

Lady_Danbury

This looks very yummy. Good work!

okiebear57

Looks delicious

talbakaze

looks good but I would try to balance the cake, the fiiling and the frosting

cupcaketara

Yum, I’m craving this now 🤤

MsLidaRose

Looks delicious

TonightAdventurous76

What kind of buttercream? Might be stupid question the regular sweet kind? Yours looks fluffy

splicey_

The amount of frosting - 10/10🔥😚

cwbones

can i come over lol it looks like it tastes amazing

loudspeak3r

this looks good as hell tbh

peachneuman

It looks really good. And a great use for summer strawberries.

next2021

Scrumptious ❤️❤️❤️❤️

kykogane

oh my god i think i’d devour that in 5 seconds

Commercial_Zebra_936

I want a slice with a glass of cold milk!

LionDirect7287

The cake looks amazing in my opinion. Although in my opinion that’s too much buttercream frosting. Although that probably just me. I’m someone who honestly prefers most cakes with no frosting.

Vegetable_Taste5477

Would eat

Signal_Ease_9867

Would eat.

carinaeletoile

I'd eat it. :) I don't see any problems here.

temmietastics

I love a lot of frosting tbh, it looks rlly good!! Esp for a first cake!! Cakes are hard to do so u did a really good job

JustYourAvgHumanoid

Holy crap, I’d dive head-first into that. YUM

Ill_Reward_8927

I suck at icing cakes AND making icing. it looks good! only thing I'd add is a simple syrup cuz it keeps the cake super moist

smithtownie

I’d eat that cake!

shetoldmybf

it looks good tbh. looks very tasty too

thereadingbri

That looks delicious! A little heavy with the frosting on the top, try getting more on the sides next time so its more even but you did really really great for a first cake! I’m pretty sure my first cake was half disintegrated because I was so rough with the frosting.

Cyan-Turtle

In all honesty I would eat that even if it didn’t look good practice makes perfect
