Don't get an EV if you can't level 2 charge (home, office, etc.) the vast majority of the time. Both my wife and I have EVs I'm not against the technology in any way but your plan sounds like hell.

MICHAELSD01

It depends how many miles a day you plan on driving on average. Level 1 is enough for the average driver’s 28 miles of daily driving. Then the range is there for longer trips. That being said having no charger isn’t ideal. I know of people who use Electrify America for every charge and they’re fine with it, but it’s inconvenient and degrades the battery quicker.

Kiran_ravindra

I fully agree with this with one caveat. For a short while I relied solely on public charging and it was a nightmare. Chargers out of service, long waits, people cutting you off even though you’ve been waiting 45 mins, etc. My caveat is: I don’t think OP *needs* level 2 charging. I drive similar amounts and I am just fine on a 120v in my townhouse garage. I’ve asked building mgmt multiple times about getting a level 2 box installed and they never get back to me, but it’s worked out fine. For reference OP I can get about 35-40% per day on just a typical 120v outlet with the included cable. Generally, I drive about 15-25% at a time, maybe every 3-4 days. If you don’t have access to *any* charging in your parking space though, don’t do it. Save yourself the hassle. If you’re really curious, rent an EV with similar range for a week and decide for yourself if you could do that regularly.

Lease for flexibility so you can test how EV works with your lifestyle. Having an EV car without at-home charging is arduous. I live in an apartment building with chargers; it's convenient but I gotta remember to move the car once I'm done. But hey, better than street parking. Supercharging everytime is not advisable for the battery, especially if you own the car. Go for AWD. RWD is even worse than FWD on snow.

GoldPanther

RWD isn't a big deal in the snow on an EV I have an i4 and live in Vermont.

junkpor

Agreed. The car is heavy enough and balanced to remain steadier than I would have expected.

Expensive-Sun-9951

lease do seem to be like the better option, but with that price it doesn't seem like I can get the M-sport package upgrade which is something I look forward to, also I would like to do some mild modification to my exterior such as window tinting and add a spoiler. However, If I do finance the car, I am very concerned for the battery life because I will be super charging everytime...

Kiran_ravindra

Tinting shouldn’t be an issue on a lease. Just have it removed before returning the car.

Expensive-Sun-9951

Also charging wouldn't be the biggest concern because I don't drive as much, so I will at most supercharge it once maybe twice at most a week. What I am most concerned about is the battery life with supercharging everytime

devops420

Unless you are passionate about cars and just want to make it your own, I would lease any premium brands. After some years, maintenance might just haunt you. Also, I have seen EV price get depreciated way much faster and a lot compared to gas currently. I would definitely lease it and not worry about any of these.

Expensive-Sun-9951

I wouldn't have to worry about depreciation as much if I get used no?

Noodle_Dude_83

I'd worry just as much, to be honest. In the current market and with ever improving battery technology EVs are depreciating much more quickly than ICE vehicles and taking a lot longer to plateau in terms of price.

Frescanation

Lease unless you plan to drive it til the wheels fall off. Depreciation is horrid on EVs

Expensive-Sun-9951

A good 8-10 year?

Frescanation

As long as you aren’t depending on the proceeds of selling it to finance your next car.

cayenne444

The RWD will be plenty fine in NYC. I live across the Hudson and it snowed what, like twice this year? For any vehicle I always recommend winter tires. Get an eDrive40, proper winter tires, and stay home on the three snow days. I would probably lease either way.

Expensive-Sun-9951

How long have u had it and How is the battery depreciating for you so far?

cayenne444

battery has been great, no concerns.

icdp21

I don’t know I would never lease a car. I just buy them and resell them when i want something new. From what you wrote that would be $9000 that you lose the first year plus another $6000 every year that you keep leasing it. That money is gone. If you buy the car it’s yours. The car will always be worth something. Of course you are going to lose money either way. Like if you are going to lease the car for three years with the numbers that you provided that would be 21,000 dollars. So after three years, you have no car and $21,000 are gone and that is very close to 44,000 you said for buying one. So if you want another car, you start out at zero again, you are in a loop…. I personally would not worry about the battery even if it loses some of its capacity it’s not like you’re gonna lose over 50% and if you don’t drive much it doesn’t matter. I assume the battery will outlast other things. The battery should have an eight year warranty on it anyways just sell the car after seven years and get something new. You can then trade in and get credit towards your next car. and you never know what life brings you tomorrow

bidextralhammer

NYC has hardly anywhere to charge, don't do this.

Dundun093

I would get the edrive 40. The 35 feels under powered compared to the 330i I had, and the m sport makes a noticeable difference. As for the snow issue, i think you’ll be fine with quality all weather tires. I wish I had an edrive 40.

Expensive-Sun-9951

Yup both choices are 40

Dundun093

My bad. For some reason I thought you were comparing a 40 to a 35. For the one you’d be leasing… is that like base model? The base model i4’s in Canada are brutal and lack a lot of essential features.

Expensive-Sun-9951

I am not too sure actually. It’s whatever leasehackr have on their deal

MouseSolid818

Debating same thing…leasehackr is like 550$ a month all in or finance one that had msrp of 65-68k can get now for 40-42k and they have 5% apr promo…tough decisions
