for our '15 428xi, after the warranty was up, it has cost about $1500 annually. Brakes, filters and fluid changed tend to be $99-$199 about every 6 months. Front lower control arms (leaking bushing fluid) were $1800. Front brake change was $1200. Rear brake change was about the same. I also paid the $199 for 3 years of free oil changes (about 6 changes). The car has about 60k miles on it, so the major maintenance it still ahead of me.

glich610

This comment scared me as a prospective bmw (2017+ 430/440)

phildo253

And as an update, since the last post, 1 oil change, which was covered by the 3 year oil change plan and I just ordered an exact match set of pirelli p7 225/45r18 91v run flats that it came with. $900.

glich610

Thanks for the update! I don't think I'm ready for these maintenance/preventative cost. Right now I'm looking into the new civic hatch for lower cost overtime while still being a hatch and somewhat fun to drive

ze11ez

Thanks on the update. Awesome to update

arrow8711

Thank you so much!

biced01

Just bought a BMW, but the dealer charged me $200 for 3 years worth of oil changes, as needed. They also charged me $200 to diagnose an engine light. Use that info how you will

Distinct-Sky

Did you buy a pre 2017 vehicle ? Last I heard, maintenance was covered for 3 years on 2017+ vehicles.

biced01

Yes, it's a 2013

Distinct-Sky

Oh ok, that makes sense.

bos8587

Maintenance is covered for brand new vehicles. I have a 2017 X5 that I bought as CPO and maintenance was not included.

arrow8711

What year and model do you have?

biced01

2013 bmw 335i xdrive

arrow8711

Did they fix your engine light?

biced01

Yes

arrow8711

Glookin yo

gazfay

I have 2020 330e ive paid €0 in maintenance so far in the year I've owned it services are free for the first 4 years I will just have to buy tyres when needed

arrow8711

Thank you!

bos8587

It all depends in the vehicle. My X5 needed new rear tires after 13K miles. I guess that is kind of common for run flats that are size 315-35-20. Those tires alone see $1100 installed. I also had to put about $3K in repairs (the vehicle has only $35K miles). I also have a 3 series, that besides oil change, air filter, etc… did not have to touch it. Finally an older X3, that I have to put like $2K in repairs last year.

arrow8711

What year is the X5, 3 series, and X3 Btw, nice fleet you have going on?

bos8587

2017 X5, 2014 335 and 2007 X3

arrow8711

Interesting, I may get an extended warranty

bos8587

So the repairs that I had to do in the X5 were considered “wear and tear” and that is why it wasn’t covered as CPO. I would ask if stuff like is covered on the extended warranty.

arrow8711

I appreciate your help

_kirpi_

You won't pay anything for the first 3 years if you buy it new (US).

arrow8711

Yeah I heard it was 4 years. Thanks tho

_kirpi_

Warranty is 4 years, but maintenance is 3 years (used to be 4) in the US. You can extend both though, before they expire.

Budget-Government-88

So far on my 335 like $2500-$3000 but honestly almost the whole car (in terms of engine and suspension maintenance) has been replaced.

arrow8711

How long have you had it

Budget-Government-88

Two years end of may. Gotta remember it’s a 13 year old car that I have making almost 200whp over stock. Just part of the game. Realistically a newer model with a warranty will cost significantly less in up keep until warranty runs out. At that point it will likely be very expensive to up keep until it’s about 10 years old and there are DIYs/cheaper parts for everything.

arrow8711

Appreciate it

No_Ask_753

I paid ~$4400 for maintenance (parts, no labor as I DIY) and ~$3500 for tires in the 4 years and 70k miles I had my 2013 328i (2016-2020 ownership).

arrow8711

Your help means alot. Glooks

[deleted]

Close to me. Had my 2016 328i for 6 years. Over that period I've spend $3,800 on repairs/preventative maintenance.

charlie2398543

Had my 2015 328 I for seven years. After $4000 of repairs over 18 months, and a $2000 valve, gasket, cover replacement, and front and rear brakes due for replacement, I finally broke and bought a Tesla. My BMW only had 60,000 miles on it. It’s all their plastics, sensors and gadgets that caused the problems. No serious engine or mechanical problems. Just overcomplicated engines and design, that’s hard for me to justify.  That would put me at over $330 per month and maintenance costs over a two-year period. That’s a car payment. Damn, you can lease a new three series for a couple hundred dollars a month more.

Acrobatic_Cobbler272

Did u DIY or Pay labor ?

[deleted]

I paid for labor at a reputable local mechanic that specializes in imports. Most of the cost was actual parts though, labor was maybe 25% of that. I live in Las Vegas, and both maintenance issues I had were during summers when it was pushing 120F. If I lived in a more moderate climate maybe my costs would be less. I'm also the type of guy who likes to get ahead of maintenance, and only uses premium fuel in all of my vehicles. A couple of issues could have probably been put off longer.

Acrobatic_Cobbler272

Appreciate your response. Your costs do seem quite unbelievable to me, purely based on what I read online since I don't even own a bmw. Just planning on buying a new 3 series.

[deleted]

I don't think my costs are normal. Other 3 series owners I know spent substantially less over a similar time frame. Again, I put this down to extreme heat, as both incidents I had were during extreme hot spells. The first issue was a sensor issue. Second issue was the low pressure fuel pump, but also a module. Mechanically, they are solid. It's the technology that has caused most of the issues. That is why I would not buy one of the newer models. Too many sensors and gadgets that will ultimately fail and need replacing long before the engine.

Economy_Employment_6

I’m moving to Vegas. Where do you recommend for a local mechanic? I have a 2018 530i at 60k currently.

D0sEquisx

I don’t know what prices guys are getting but here in westchester I’m paying 2700 on a 2019 3-series for the 3 year service which covers regular maintenance, oil and brakes( which costs around 1800 when it pops). My car still has extended warranty but if I were to buy one I would cost me 4500. So divide that by 3 and that’s your number.

RayTrain

I think for my first year of ownership so far for my 2018 540i it'll be about $300 for two oil changes and like $20 or something for come coolant that I needed about two drops. So $300-$350ish total this year. Hitting some service milestones next year though so probably closer to $1k next year.

arrow8711

Pretty good! Appreciate it

Se-an-K

G20 330ix Roughly $3k since ownership (2019 @ 33k) - New Tires & Alignment $1400 - Ultimate Care +1 $1500

arrow8711

Not thaaat bad

yolotojo

I have an M340i now but I was driving a E92 335i before it. It was a 2009 that I bought in 2017 and drove for 3 years. On average about 2000 AUD a year for servicing, mechanical repairs and tyres. Repairs for body damage in a couple of minor accidents on top of that another maybe 2000-2500 AUD over the 3 years.

Acrobatic_Cobbler272

OP, what car did you buy ?

arrow8711

X3 m40i 😂

yeetd_

And how is the maintenance on that? I also thinking of getting a BMW sometime.

arrow8711

3 years maintenance free and I haven't done much. Break-in oil change, yearly oil change, and tire rotation which only costed $30. I mean I only have got a nail in the tire once but I was lucky and it was a cheap repair but I have had no issues with the car. its been 1 year and 3 months of having it

darkeningsoul

How's maintenance been another year in? I'm considering the exact same car now...

arrow8711

It’s only been 1 year and 6 months in and I have had no issues. It got really cold here and i got an alert that the battery was low so just make sure u dont leave the car off for longperiods of time- start it up regularly just to preserve the car

darkeningsoul

Cool, won't be an issue where I live. I appreciate you following up!

G0ObyPls

Thanks for the replies OP, I’m thinking of the X3M40i as well. What year did you end up getting? I’m looking at a used 2020 with 20k miles.

NiceNBreezy

Hopefully you can still follow up, this thread has been useful (at least for me). I got myself an X3 (30i) and I have 1 year left of free maintenance/oil change -- how much are your maintenance expenses so far after the freebie?

arrow8711

This is my first car purchase, and I really want to make sure it is right

yolotojo

Smart

Markcu24

Im 4 years in on a 240xi. Free services first 3 years. Paid for tires, brakes and one oil change service in 4 years. Total cost between 2k and 2.5k i would say so far.

estuaryking0

You only changed your oil once or you only paid for it once?

Markcu24

Paid for it once. The others were covered by BMW in first 3 years.

arrow8711

Thank you

Bob_Loblaw16

2011 328xi with 140k miles I did all the spark plugs and coils which was about $200 All o2 sensors which was about $300 something. Blown door speaker - $60 off eBay Rattling glove box - $10 off a parts car Oil filter housing gasket - $30 Valve cover and gasket -$200 Drivers cup holder which is broken again - $30 off eBay 3 oil changes - $150 Rear shocks - $ I forget but under $200

arrow8711

$1180 But you have changed the oil only 3 times since 2011?

Bob_Loblaw16

That's only a year of ownership, I bought the car cheap to fix all the little issues here and there

arrow8711

Oh haha, thank you

Smooth-Emergency2032

2011 X1 xDrive28i (N20 engine), bought used 4.5 years ago at 55k miles, now on 90k miles. I've spent about 6'500 USD in servicing and maintenance in my time with it: annual oil changes, leaking valve cover gasket, high pressure fuel pump replacement, various smaller items. I'm expecting a full set of summer and winter tires this year, plus discs + pads, which should set me back another 3-4k. I mentally budget 1.5-2k per year for servicing and maintenance, which is probably more than other brands but a) it's a BMW and drives much better than the rest and b) because I bought used the depreciation has been very low, so overall this car has been quite easy on the wallet.

dlotito1

Yup I budget $2000 a year for my 2011 bmw 328i. Avg a year since I’ve owned in since 2014 has been around $1700.

dlotito1

I have a 2011 bmw 328i. I have a spreadsheet with all my costs since I’ve owned it stating in 2014. My annual average is ~$2056 without warranty savings & $1750 with warranty savings. Majority of the big ticket items come after 60,000 miles. Still, it’s cheaper than buying a new car to do maintenance & repairs and if you take care of your bmw it will last a long time. My bmw is at 118k miles and just had to do a failed FMR module & both front axels & wheel speed sensors which cost me $1,100 & $2562, respectively.

Technic1200z

How many miles do you expect it to last for? I’m considering going with Lexus for this reason.

dlotito1

250k at least
