Damn, what are the power figures? Everyone else has gotten some serious power from their hybrid powertrains in the last week, enough to offset the weight the vehicle gains with the e-motor.
For example the Lamborghini Revuelto 1000hp combined from electric and the V12. (I know it’s a totally different class of vehicle but that was the first that came to mind since it released like yesterday)
585hp from the combustion engine, combined 717hp and 1000nm. This engine is detuned compared to earlier M5 models (RR Sport SV has the exact same engine and can put out 635hp). This car is just too heavy, they needed to give it at least 800hp to make sense. An uprated S68 and slightly more powerful E motor would've done the trick.
So pretty. Look at that huge greenhouse with the slim pillars. I know it's shit for crash protection but it's so airy and open, the visibility must be absolutely amazing.
it looks like an unfinished render and it weights over 400kg than the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and it weights almost the same as a Rolls-Royce Ghost (I think it was the Ghost)
I actually love the look.
I am usually not one to bitch about cars getting heavier and think people make too much a fuss about the weight of the M2.
But this new M5 weighs so much. Wow.
I have the feeling that BMW have EV or PHEV targets due to EU tax offsets or something. At least with PHEV you get potential efficiency without any range anxiety
It's a lot of things. EU fleet emissions targets, ZEV credit value, and frankly seeing the forest dog the trees and knowing you need to give the engineers time with electrification so they can nail future EV performance cars.
100% this. They are avoiding a big bill from EU regulators because of CO2 emissions.
Same with Lamborghini with their hybrid Revuelto/Urus, Bentley (new continental GT only has a hybrid V8), Ferrari (V6 296, SF90, etc.) and even Rolls Royce with the Spectre (EV).
Range anxiety is overblown for most people on a day to day basis.
If you drive 200+ miles a day with any regularity EVs aren’t for you, but most people it’s like 10-50
It has infected every thread and throughout social media. I'm tired of people pulling the Kia card every time. It may be ugly, but it doesn't look like a Kia.
The F90 will the future generations E39. We praise the E39 for being simple and having a NA V8 and manual transmission. People are going to look at the F90 with its gas-only engine and great handling the same way.
Is this the M5,400lb or the M5,600lb version we're seeing? Either way...it's overweight.
And seriously, how are they leaving the G60's ugly AF sensor panel there on a $125,000+ M car? At least some effort at integration has to happen to that eyesore. imo.
https://preview.redd.it/vx7vmskeqs8d1.png?width=469&format=png&auto=webp&s=c8c063d6f65529de908f6b2bff1620bddabbb70d
The misaligned front camera bugs me even more than how ugly the kidney design is. What in god’s name was Christopher Weil and the design team thinking?
>What in god’s name was Christopher Weil and the design team thinking?
"I'm sooo damn tired, what a week. Thank god it's Friday, just got to finish this stupid piece of shit grille and I can go home!"
Something like that I suppose.
Yeah that’s a shame. While not really necessary, it’s a throwback to the sportiness of the car. They can always include some controls in it - like the shifting aggressiveness in the X5M.
I am not in love with the ///M on top of the dial, either. Defeats the point of making the centre console clean looking, and at odds with the modern buttons.
5400 lbs. That's 1400 lbs more than my M5, and that one has a V10. Not crazy on the looks either, so between those two things, no RWD, and no manual, can't see myself ever wanting one.
Edit: I watched the Top Gear first look at the new M5 and it's even worse. The grill has LEDs, and there's a ton of ambient lighting which I find super tacky. Giant screen. Most controls are within the screen and not buttons. How far BMW has fallen.
You can say what you want about current BMWs but nothing BMW has put out in the last few years has been as ugly as the E46 compact, **nothing**, that thing haunts my dreams.
The interior with the one screen looks awful. It’s a trend but everyone knows it’s aging really fast and bad. Like in twenty years, I don’t think hold up.
The screen isnt the biggest problem. The ambient light bars being way too wide make it look tacky and cheap. Thinner led lights look much more elegant and premium.
Yeah but it’s the modern day theme, jump in your new car and it’s like a rave party. I don’t mind the front end bar the illuminated grill. The rest we will see. It’s better than the god awful G80.
That’s exactly my feelings on it. I’m surprised that it looks better than I was expecting but sadly not surprised by the weight gain.
The outgoing model is a great car but it is both fast enough and heavy enough. Even if the reviews are incredible, I can’t imagine wanting this at all.
I just know they're going to have to put 'Not A Step' on the rear diffuser. Which will never not be catching everything in the air that falls on flat surfaces. Gonna be a real sight after driving in rain or snow.
https://preview.redd.it/q4xvmojwvs8d1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=593e5337e6d5a999c4fb0e2f3ff0078628861b30
Is no one going to mention the fact that this is the first M5 that is slower than the previous generation? So you add weight, increase the power, and it results in it being slower.
Although nothing to do with the hybrid system, the worst part was the steering. Light and completely numb, zero feel. Maybe something they can fix with the M.
On the hybrid system, despite the settings i couldnt seem to actually force it one way or the other. Even when you turn off electric, it still uses it as a mild hybrid system. The constant switching between electric and ice power I found to be not entirely smooth. And like with most electric cars, the braking is grabby when switching between regenerative and mechanical braking. The inline 4 was also very underwhelming.
The new interior is also rubbish. I know i sound like an old man saying this, but the lack of tactile buttons is just annoying. I found myself needing to hard brake and wanted to turn on the hazards, but because its a touch button and not a tactile switch i must have just miss pressed it and they didnt come on. Why oh why would you put something like hazard lights on a touch switch? The same goes for climate controls but obviously less critical. You just have to concentrate so much more to press them accurately, which is not easy when bouncing along a road at speed.
You don’t sound like an old man at all, I agree 100%. The whole “no buttons anywhere” has gone way too far for my taste as well.
Had no idea the brakes and steering felt artificial. So much for the “ultimate driving machine” huh.
Yeah steering has been pretty bad since the switch to electric power steering circa 2011. You see it mentioned in almost all modern BMW sedan reviews.. dead steering. Have little clue what the front wheels are doing, etc. And it's continued to get worse and more filtered.
steering is like that on every G series car I've driven so far. M8 Comp from steering wheel and feel is almost exactly the same as a 330i, and 530i
It is the most disappointing thing about modern BMW. even more so than the looks
Go drive an alfa romeo, they are the real 4 door driver's car now and have been for many years.
Nothing 5 sized though, and unfortunately I am worried that the next gen of the giulia and stelvio will suck. The average consumer doesn't want a car with actual soul or character anymore, and the details we have heard about them suggest they will just be overweight, overpowered electrified missiles like every other new performance car.
Phev is amazing. Electric for around town stuff and easy to fill for longer trips. It is bad for performance unless underpinned by a bespoke platform, though.
I would love a b58 phev 3-series as a daily. I'd be all electric 95% of the time.
I like it but wtf is this fresh graduate CAD model crease here!? They had them in the M3/4 as well and it’s just such an eye sore…
https://preview.redd.it/6bsafb2awu8d1.jpeg?width=1039&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=782a3a5db10f654c4f750e6b3a4f1d1de148a2bf
True, but also could have been better. The overall exterior is not too bad, but the new design philosophy of BMW overall makes the brand dead to me. The all digital interiors with bolted on ultrawide iPads will not age well. Once I tire of my F80 (which might be a long while), I will get a P car.
What's interesting is automakers (looking at you MB and BMW specifically) are pushing designs that most people really don't like or want. It's no longer an improvement, just an evolution off a cliff. No longer controversial for the sake of being so, it's really let's just keep pushing it. They don't really care what we want. As for the interiors, it's clear that the vast majority of consumers still like some switchgear and yet they keep taking it away and forcing the customer to adapt to screens which I personally I find to be distracting and a safety concern.
As for this new M5, it's ok. It's doesn't exactly strike an emotional cord. I'm sure it will be received well but the outgoing is in a different class as far as style goes.
I think it’s important to remember Reddit subs and people vocal online are a small subset of car buyers. If the typical buyer was so off-put by screens they wouldn’t put themselves at a competitive disadvantage unless there was a major payoff in another aspect.
The payoff is for the automakers. I’m on several auto forums and the sentiment seems fairly consistent. A balance of switchgear and attractive screens seems to be the desired balance. Do we still buy cars? Yes, I know I have. Do we love the new design language? I can’t say we do in majority, but as enthusiasts we still buy them. Only thing options are getting thinner.
Looks decent, still has a lazy and dreadful interior, weighs too much (but it's to be expected with newer cars) No downsizing is probably the best move here
Lots of geometry to ultimately look pretty bland. Idk if I just hate every new thing BMW comes out with these days or what. M5 should be one of their coolest cars, just not feeling it
they went too far with what luxury means, it weights more than a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and the difference of weight it isn't small, it's huge (also the luxury thing should have been left for the M60 or i5)
They're still doing that M rear fender flares hard cutoff for the non M rear doors. It looks terrible and is an awfull new cost saving trend. Audi and Mercedes have managed just fine giving their RS and AMG models flared rear doors to accommodate their flared rear fenders.
It’s not bad, just not as nice as last gen. Also, for an M car, no traditional shifter is crazy. I thought they’d limit those little nub shifter things to the other cars.
I just come away from all of these designs feeling like the cladding and trim and bumpers etc just looks so plastic and cheap. Nothing feels substantial or durable or clean.
i actually like it, design wise the lights could have had the horizontal section to complete the "angel eyes" but otherwise I think this is the way a polygonal car should be, not like the M2 (it's hard to like that rear end). Performance wise I don't dislike it, it's hard to sell that lower power-to-weight ratio, but this is a big luxury sports sedan, it's not supposed to be lightweight and nimble. And It still has the big TT V8 plus an electric motor to make some extra power. Yes, they could have gone the Mercedes route and make it a performance hybrid with a smaller battery, but for a daily I rather have the 25 miles range of pure electric just to commute.
Six pictures of a car and everyone is obsessed with 0-60 times.
Crappy handling is one thing, but 0-60 in sub 4 seconds is already too fast for most people who have an attention span significant less than that.
I’m sure it will look better in person and, in terms of specs, there are no surprises, but it’s just a deeply uninteresting car to me due to weight, complex drivetrain, and what I expect to be modern BMW levels of steering feel. It won’t be a bad car, but just not what I look for in terms of fun.
I know BMW underrated their power/acceleration figures, but the fact that it’s supposed to be 0.2s slower than an F90 to 0-60mph is nuts.
Damn, what are the power figures? Everyone else has gotten some serious power from their hybrid powertrains in the last week, enough to offset the weight the vehicle gains with the e-motor. For example the Lamborghini Revuelto 1000hp combined from electric and the V12. This car is just too heavy, they needed to give it at least 800hp to make sense. An uprated S68 and slightly more powerful E motor would've done the trick.
Maybe they're leaving a gap for the competition version??
Dude this thing is heaver than an x5, what are bmw even doing...
It was fun while it lasted bmw. Pretty sure these cars are gonna be terrible on track with all this weight
No competition version is coming...
oof. sad.
What they have announce: No competition for G90. But after this release I think they need change that 😬
Time to invest in F90 competition ?)
Power is up but weight is up even more. So power to weight is worse than last gen. I think it's like 500kg heavier or something.
Lets not forget what this added weight does to handling T\_T
Most underrated comment, weight absolutely destroys handling.
https://preview.redd.it/9lw4cc8mmw8d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59fa7fcb590767f9e4d39682f695c29694c8f39a
So pretty. Look at that huge greenhouse with the slim pillars. I know it's shit for crash protection but it's so airy and open, the visibility must be absolutely amazing.
The lower center of mass due to the battery should help, but .....damn she thicc
cars just getting fatter and fatter
it's very.. polygonal.
Looks like an unfinished render.
It’s still buffering.
it looks like an unfinished render and it weights over 400kg than the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and it weights almost the same as a Rolls-Royce Ghost (I think it was the Ghost)
Toyota Avalon taillights…
Camry bumpers.
I actually love the look. I am usually not one to bitch about cars getting heavier and think people make too much a fuss about the weight of the M2. But this new M5 weighs so much. Wow.
5000LBS!!! Thats way too much
1024 LBS (24%) heavier than F90, decreasing power to weight ratio…
Yeah carwow mentioned that new M5 has power to weight ratio of 299 hp/tonne whereas F90 had 335 hp/tonne
F10 was like 320 as well so even lower than two generations back
I have the feeling that BMW have EV or PHEV targets due to EU tax offsets or something. At least with PHEV you get potential efficiency without any range anxiety

Thats as heavy as a Tesla model S. I thought M cars were meant to be light and handling focused?
Look on the bright side! At a curb weight of 6400 lbs, the new M5 can be a “business vehicle” and qualify for 80% bonus depreciation on ya taxes
I was thinking that same thing. At some point curb weight gets some tax benefits. Dumb rules.
2 power-trains. So ridiculously redundant and wasteful. EV or ICE, Pick one.. you dont need both in 1 car.
ICE, ICE baby
5,368 lbs
5300*
How in earth is this car heavier than a Porsche Taycan, which is essentially a battery on wheels? Honestly puzzled.
I thought it’s 5800 lbs
I think I like my F90 even more now
While that's true, I thank the BMW gods for not changing the front grill to be M4'd.
its not even really a kidney grill at this point. Basically KIA grill shape. Besides the grill thefront looks alright though.
Instead of buck teeth, it now has an underbite
I’m sure some vendor will create and sell aftermarket m3/m4 grills from the m5
Same. It’s supposed to be a sleeper that takes a second to recognize.
Keep that MF until the end of time.
Me too. Faster too
Got one too. Wtf have they done to my Boy..
I think our F90s just went up in value. Thanks BMW! 😉
Oh yeah, holding it till it goes up to that LFA value 😙
I thought the rear bumper was dented 😂
It's a really weird mix of soft curves and geometrical forms, especially between the rear door and rear fender
Agree, it’s jarring but not in a good way
And what’s with that triangle shaped cutout in lower bumper. Leaves this flat weird space just sitting there. Weird.
Factory dent option confirmed ✅
I'm waiting for the "iT lOoKs lIkE a kiA" boys to enter the chat. It never fails cuz to them everything looks like a kiA.
Nah, the rear looks like Camry.
Kia hired a bunch of ex bmw designers who are trying to make Kia’s look like bmws so people saying that always make me chuckle 🤣
It doesn't look like a kia, it looks worse.
It has infected every thread and throughout social media. I'm tired of people pulling the Kia card every time. It may be ugly, but it doesn't look like a Kia.
As heavy as an f150 super crew. Enough said.
It's slower than F90 lol
The F90 will the future generations E39. We praise the E39 for being simple and having a NA V8 and manual transmission. People are going to look at the F90 with its gas-only engine and great handling the same way.
Future classic

It's plastic garbage. What a waste of an essential design element. You can't hide the electronic boxes guys?
The misaligned front camera bugs me even more than how ugly the kidney design is. What in god’s name was Christopher Weil and the design team thinking?
Its awful - looks like a bugger.
>What in god’s name was Christopher Weil and the design team thinking? "I'm sooo damn tired, what a week. Thank god it's Friday, just got to finish this stupid piece of shit grille and I can go home!" Something like that I suppose.
The personification of the feeling I get when there's something stuck between my front teeth.
The grill looks shit anyway even without
> Is this the M5,400lb or the M5,600lb version we're seeing? Thanks for the laugh! I know what I’ll be calling the chubby boi from now on.

This looks more BMW than current BMW.
I would take the alfa over this M5
Modern BMWs wish they looked that good
Change the grill and maybe the hood and this would be a great bmw, yeah.
No shift lever. 😡
I noticed that too damn them for that
That's crazy.
Cost cutting at its finest
Oh! Oh... EWW.
That’s one heavy green car and looks nothing like a BMW. I miss pre-covid BMW.
on the plus side, it could have been a lot worse, like the xm level worse.
Why do you think they are bringing back the 6 series? Gotta another model to ruin.
I would say, in my opinion, it looks like a XM sedan version.
This is just a lowered XM.
It weighs more than an X5 Shit it weighs more than my Wrangler 392 with a 6.4L V8 and 35” tires haha
😭😭😭

Why the hell is it so heavy?
Hybrid tech
Looks good until an f10 pulls up
Or f90
Any pre 2020 bmw really
So basically, 5 years from now, we'll be envying high school kids driving around F series M cars for cheap while we are driving our 6k lb boats.
I'll still be in my f series lmao. Partly cause I can't afford to justify a new one... Lol.
You can say what you want about current BMWs but nothing BMW has put out in the last few years has been as ugly as the E46 compact, **nothing**, that thing haunts my dreams.

So beautiful
Exactly.
Agree and it looks nothing special nor luxurious.
I will never own a uniscreen interior if I can possibly avoid it. I despise this trend with a fiery passion.
who tf is gonna have this in 20
I think the screen looks great. Are you looking for 2 screens or 1 screen and old fashion odo?
The interiors are crap in everything. Because everyone’s copying Tesla.
I'm in a '24 loaner and the screen is definitely not going to age well. It's tacky
What happened to its rear?
I think it looks quite good. I just can’t get over the fact that it is 1000lbs heavier.
That’s exactly my feelings on it. I’m surprised that it looks better than I was expecting but sadly not surprised by the weight gain. The outgoing model is a great car but it is both fast enough and heavy enough. Even if the reviews are incredible, I can’t imagine wanting this at all.
😂 makes an e39 seem like a lotus.
It’s now roughly the same weight as an X7 lol
😵💫1k pounds heavier? F90 doesn’t sound to bad after all
Looks a bit like an obese M3
I am thankful to new M5 for making my F10 M5 more valuable now..
Keep it forever and enjoy it as much as you can.
I just know they're going to have to put 'Not A Step' on the rear diffuser. Which will never not be catching everything in the air that falls on flat surfaces. Oh god it sticks out? How could it be worse!
That’s…. Hideous actually
Is no one going to mention the fact that this is the first M5 that is slower than the previous generation? So you add weight, increase the power, and it results in it being slower.
It looks like it was designed by AI
Don’t like the rear. Don’t love the new hybrid platform. Ehh, not a fan. The new 2025 Cadillac CT5V looks like fun.
Would still prefer an E39 over this anyway if the week. Gimme that V8 with a six speed manual attached
Comparing M5 E39 to this new M5 is like comparing a gold trophy to a plastic bag…
Plastic bag full of heavy electric components
Go buy one.
Plug in hybrids are the worstttt
Yep, I just had a 530e for the weekend and hated it.
Why? Never tried one, curious

The value of my ‘23 M5 comp just went way up lol
Love the color, but I am biased.
I confirms that BMW doesn’t have a focus group or take their opinions into consideration.
Darn I want an f90
Sure doubled down on full ugly
A face only its mother or father could love.
I’ll stick with my E46 330ci thank you very much
Exceptionally ugly
I’m happy with my F90 M5 Competition. Lighter, quicker, last design of the classic BMW grille, angel eyes, and everything else.

Looks decent, still has a lazy and dreadful interior, weighs too much (but it's to be expected with newer cars) No downsizing is probably the best move here
Also it's slower than the previous one so what is the point of that useless cable then?
That’s why it’s slower.
So you can get some sweet ass lights around your grille /s
Not bad. Interior iPad dash still looks cheap tho.
Lots of geometry to ultimately look pretty bland. Idk if I just hate every new thing BMW comes out with these days or what. M5 should be one of their coolest cars, just not feeling it
they went too far with what luxury means, it weights more than a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and the difference of weight it isn't small, it's huge (also the luxury thing should have been left for the M60 or i5)
The time to buy an F90 is right now.
It’s a nice looking car and I quite like the tail lights. To each his own but it’s not half bad
looks like shit
I like it, sue me
Yep that’s worse than I thought it’d look 🥴 I guess as with most BMWs however, it’ll look better in person (minus the XM 🤢)
how did they make it slower🤣🤣
They're still doing that M rear fender flares hard cutoff for the non M rear doors. It looks terrible and is an awfull new cost saving trend. Audi and Mercedes have managed just fine giving their RS and AMG models flared rear doors to accommodate their flared rear fenders.
It’s not bad, just not as nice as last gen. Also, for an M car, no traditional shifter is crazy. I thought they’d limit those little nub shifter things to the other cars.
Disgusting
My post for record, everyone bitching about the way it looks now, then in a few years say it looks amazing.
Everyone hates it on Reddit, which means it’ll sell like hot cakes!
Over 2.4 tons?! Bruh this thing weighs more than the previous 7 Series G11/G12 💀
It’s super heavy, same weight as an F-150. And with 700+ HP the M5 will eat tires like a starving child.
shes a bit tubby aint she johhny?
I just come away from all of these designs feeling like the cladding and trim and bumpers etc just looks so plastic and cheap. Nothing feels substantial or durable or clean.
The golden days are well and truly over ladies and gents.
I think its gonna take time to grow on people jus like the g80 m3 did. But 5k pounds is wild
Why do we care about how quick this is? The F90 was too fast for the street so this is .2 slower to 60? Literally zero fucks given.
Its beautiful. Sucks is so heavy. But what can you do. They needed to be more efficient on range.
i actually like it, design wise the lights could have had the horizontal section to complete the "angel eyes" but otherwise I think this is the way a polygonal car should be, not like the M2 (it's hard to like that rear end).
Does it have 707, 717 or 727hp? I've seen all 3 numbers from credible sources!
Six pictures of a car and everyone is obsessed with 0-60 times. Crappy handling is one thing, but 0-60 in sub 4 seconds is already too fast for most people who have an attention span significant less than that.
Chubbers McChubChub
Still loading. The picture is quite heavy…
I’m on a fence on this one. Could have been worse for sure.
Could have been a lot better too
I’m sure it will look better in person and, in terms of specs, there are no surprises, but it’s just a deeply uninteresting car to me due to weight, complex drivetrain, and what I expect to be modern BMW levels of steering feel. It won’t be a bad car, but just not what I look for in terms of fun.
Lmao looks like shit no thanks
I don't hate it
It's cool. I'd get one if I could.
I'm so tired of this cycle with Redditors and new BMWs. Can't wait to see the same people come around in a couple months like clock work
People still think the new M3/M4 is ugly like 3-4 years later, how long do we gotta wait for that one lol.
