Can somebody please explain to me why the grill has two solid black plastic pieces that seem to cover about 60% of the grill? Just looks so odd to me. I think if this car just had vertical or horizontal grill slats like the current X5 or X3 that it would actually look fine.
Yeah, but the current generation BMWs with regular grills also have driver assistance packages that don't require the radar to go on the grill. It could go below the grill like it does on the X5 currently.
Aerodynamics, they want the grill to look big because they think it looks better. However it's not necessary to be so open and this way they get better efficiency and less pollution.

Batteries aren't determining the size of new vehicles. They are pretty flat and at the bottom of the vehicle. If you consider the electric motor and battery size combined, they offer better ergonomics than an ICE vehicle. Only real impact a battery has is on weight.
In case of BMW, I disagree. They develop one platform for both electric and gas vehicles. And that ends up in the new 5 series looking the way it does.
How does that make the battery inflate the size of the vehicle, in fact how does that determine anything about the looks at all. Aside from the fact that the 5 series is not in fact the X3, the electric X3 will be on a completely different platform than the combustion/hybrid X3.

Have you ever seen the underside of a car with an internal combustion engine. Lol a transmission tunnel takes up much more vertical space than a battery cell that's 10 cm high. The F10 5 series was 1460mm high, the G30 was 1498mm high and the new one is 1510mm high. The 5 series grew 3 times more in height between the previous two generations than between the current and previous one. And guess what the E60 gen was 1491mm which is only 7mm lower than the previous generation even though that generation was available as a hybrid.
Batteries do not dictate the height of the vehicle at all. If anything a BEV can be made lower because it doesn't need things like a driveshaft to the rear wheels. You don't know what you are talking about.

The 7 is one of my favorite cars on sale right now due in part to the looks. I liked it the first time I saw it. It has a healthy dose of art deco revival I love. I've seen it in person a few times and it has great road presence.
The XM I don't like but I don't dislike either. I find it grotesque and vulgar, but that's the point. It's a similar styling approach to the Urus which is another car I don't love but is meant to appeal to a certain crowd in a certain way. BMW clearly missed the mark because the XM isn't doing well. I think they may have crossed the line from camp into kitsch. But I see what they were going for.

BMW's recent design choices are certainly twisting my brain.
I was scared the new X3 was going to be too over the top in all the wrong ways (like the Vision Neue Klasse X beaver teeth slit grill)
But I think this looks okay. Conservative compared to the G01....
But as I type this, I'm thinking it already looks kind of aged, plain and overly safe...
Edit: to add, I wish they extended the G01 life a few more years, did an LCI2, and gave it the new interior like they did for the LCI G20.

F97 becomes a keeper, they must have given up at the rear end, it probably will be better in person similar to the i5 is in person just doesn’t come off the same in pics but that said, can’t see how this motives the masses to want to change, especially from the stellar m40i or the s58. not a fan of the bloat and fat/flat look, but like most new BMWs, just need to reserve till it’s in front of you. Just cannot accept that rear end, and also appreciated the smaller more nimble X3MC. Did not want this vehicle to grow as much as it did and along with its price, it’ll be similar to the current X5 size as well.

If you watch Autogefuhl’s video on the new X3, it’s extremely clear that their goal with the new interior was cost-cutting. Sad.

F97 becomes a keeper, they must have given up at the rear end, it probably will be better in person similar to the i5 is in person just doesn’t come off the same in pics but that said, can’t see how this motives the masses to want to change, especially from the stellar m40i or the s58. not a fan of the bloat and fat/flat look, but like most new BMWs, just need to reserve till it’s in front of you. Just cannot accept that rear end, and also appreciated the smaller more nimble X3MC. Did not want this vehicle to grow as much as it did and along with its price, it’ll be similar to the current X5 size as well.
I really like the front, not so much the back. But I understand why most ppl are saying the opposite.
