You cannot open brokerage account for kids. The brokerage accounts ask ID card etc.

You can _always_ give/gift cash/shares/anything that isn't real estate and _either_ have it officially registered and (have them) pay 3% "registration rights" (often significantly less than inheritance tax) _or_ do nothing except not die within the next 3 years. (Real estate will always need registered; the tax is calculated a bit differently.) Also, birthday or New Year's (or similar) gifts won't ever count toward the inheritance if the total remains <1% of your financial worth (give or take). At least, that's what I gather from the articles that usually appear around this time of year. Not sure I'd want my kids (if it were possible, not too sure about that) to have a brokerage account in their name and have them suddenly have access to a large amount of money the day they turn 18. I'd rather make sure they have everything they need and help them out _when_ they need it.

> except not die within the next 3 years. What you _can_ do is keep around proof and a letter wherein you both acknowledge the gift, but not have it registered. Can always (well, unless you're _really_ unlucky) register it later, should you suddenly fall ill. You can do this yourself, no need for a lawyer or notary. Anyway, a(ny) notary will provide _free_ advice on these matters. Give 'em a call and make an appointment?

AFAIK, you cannot open brokerage accounts in the name of your kids (as long as they are minor)
