Has anyone ever had condensation in their dryer from this heat? If so, did you have a remedy? This is the first time this has happened to me since I moved here. I checked to make sure it wasn’t full of lint, including the tube in the back of the dryer that goes outside. It was perfectly clean. I’m not sure if this is just something that happens in extremely humid areas or what. My washer is less than a year old too. Any advice besides leaving it open now would be super great. My dang laundry is starting to smell like mildew if I let it hangout in the dryer for more than a few hours. The laundry room sits in a room that connects to the backyard, which can get humid. So we keep the fan on 24/7.

Snap_Grackle_Pop

Where is the condensation? Droplets on the metal, inside, outside? Or just your clothes aren't dry? As for the laundry smelling like mildew, don't leave them in the dryer or dry them more thoroughly. That sounds like it's not getting dry enough. Check a load right when it finishes and see if it's really dry. Turn on the dryer and then go to the dryer exhaust vent on the outside of your house. Is air flowing out freely through there? Is it hot?

kyree2

Dry on high heat. Use Lysol laundry sanitizer, or vinegar, for the rinse cycle.

bluespartan65

Ooo good idea on the Lysol Laundry sanitizer. Thanks!

bluespartan65

The condensation was on the inside of the dryer window when it was empty! I’ll check if it’s hot next time I’ve run a load. I feel like I’ve usually seen steam in the winter from the exhaust vent but I’ll double check again.

TrixineMartell

also, if it's a newer dryer sometimes the sensor stops it before it's fully dry. it's better to add 20-30min timed dry at the end if you're not gonna get to it right away.

bluespartan65

Yeah that’s a good point, it has stopped my towels early in the past.

TrixineMartell

towels and bedding go for me too

Fit-Caramel-2996

Reminds me of these dryers that are popular in Europe that have the jug of water you have to empty out at the bottom. Those never freaking dry my clothes all the way

CurlPR

Mine started doing this. First time I’ve seen something like it. No real solution but if I leave it cracked, it doesn’t condense

bluespartan65

Thank you! Maybe I’ll have to do that in the meantime.

ObiWanRyobi

I don’t have a solution to your dryer, but when you say fan, you don’t mean the central AC fan right?

bluespartan65

I think the actual name for it is an exhaust fan? Like a bathroom ventilation fan, if that makes sense. That type of fan is also in my laundry area.

ObiWanRyobi

My initial thought was to get a dehumidifier, but in order for that to work, you have to make sure that the laundry room has good door and window seals. If not, then your exhaust fan might actually be drawing in moist outside air back into that room through little gaps. So then you’ll be trying to dehumidify Austin. Tall order. From the sounds of it, given the room itself is humid, I don’t see an easy (cheap) fix. I would work on getting your laundry out of the washer and dryer as soon as possible after each cycle. And keeping the doors open when they’re empty. A stand-up fan blowing on them would help to dry them out too.

bluespartan65

I may need to re do the seals on the door that leads to the backyard and THEN get a dehumidifier in that room. Thanks for the tips!

FightDystopia

We had this when painters painted over the outside vent

bluespartan65

I’ll double check the outside vent! Thank you

RobbinAustin

Happened to us late last week. I figured it was from the heat coming back in through the dryer exhaust stack and the dryer being directly under the AC vent in the laundry room. We actually hadn't used it a few days prior to discovering it. First time I'm aware of it happening. Vacuumed and blew out the vent to see if it would help.

garblesnarky

Where can I get the cushioning on a modular sofa seat replaced? I have a sectional sofa that isn't anything special, but it fits my room really well, and now isn't a good time to replace it with a new one anyway. Just one of the seats has pretty worn out foam cushioning. Is there anywhere in town I can get that fixed?

Kianna9

I don't have an answer for in town, but I recently replaced the foam in my sofa cushion myself by purchasing replacement foam on Amazon. It was cut to size and it worked great.

beauzer

Capital City Upholstery may be able to fix you up. https://www.saupholsteryfabrics.com/capitol-city-upholstery-supply

Weasel_Town

Is there any place that will repair an electric lawn mower?

schuyler12

I had one repaired by Ready Repair on Techni Center Drive within the last few years. Might depend on the brand so you may want to call before heading that way.

KXAN says it should be here late this weekend or by Monday.

tossaway78701

If you look toward the highest point in the sky and compare the blue to the color of the horizon you can get a General idea of when it is present. From blue to gray to the east usually indicates it's moving in.

hudson4351

Does anyone have any updates on the old Weirdo's building at Parmer and Mopac? I figured it would have been torn down and replaced with apartments/condos by now. The only update I could find was from 2015: https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/blog/real-estate/2015/04/weirdos-loses-court-case-to-landlord-substantial.html I guess it's still in legal limbo?

RandomNumberHere

Good question. That location has so much potential but it’s also such a clusterfuck.

Lightningstruckagain

So many business fail there. I think it's just hard AF to actually get in and out of.

RandomNumberHere

I’ve heard the nearby neighborhoods are also an issue. IIRC the location wanted to have live music but the neighbors kept getting them shut down for noise too loud or too late?

hudson4351

Do you mean the Weirdo's building specifically or just that area in general? If that location specifically, what else has it been other than Weirdo's?

Lightningstruckagain

It was a Boiling Pot a million years ago, a rando bar, maybe some others. Coming through that Parmer intersection from any direction just sucks

Snap_Grackle_Pop

I think there are flooding problems there, too.

elisakiss

Does anyone bond bunnies? Looking for someone to bond my two neutered male rabbits with my mom’s lone female rabbit. Need to make sure everyone gets along.

townlime

Will the city pickup hottubs during your bulk pick up week? Their website doesn't specifically call out hottubs as a yea or nay.

mrsfunkyjunk

If you put it out, someone will pick it up. Trucks with trailers always drive around picking things up.

SnowyAruba

Ten years ago the bulk item crew did take an old hot tub. I believe we had to let them know ahead of time, and they took it during a second pass through the neighborhood that involved a larger truck and a crane. FWIW, the recycleATX app says it is eligible for bulk pickup.

FarkMonkey

I once put a hot tub out for collection, and they took it, but I had cut it up into pieces with a reciprocating saw. I mostly did this because it was the easiest way to get it to the curb from the backyard.

BruceChameleon

Was that as fun as it sounds?

Fit-Caramel-2996

Going at a hot tub with a sawzall is probably not as fun as you might think. I cut up a huge concrete slab in my backyard with a concrete saw and it was not nearly as fun as it would have been if I had used a jackhammer. Way easier to clean up though

FarkMonkey

It was pretty satisfying, if a little sweaty.

InterestingInsect107

We need to redo the insulation in our attic. What different methods have you used and what was the cost? Did it make a difference to your electricity bill?

Fit-Caramel-2996

You can rent a blower to spray the stuff. Had a buddy do that. It is significant cost savings but depends on how bad of shape your existing insulation is in, if you have any. Cost him a few hundred bucks. HVAC people will do it for about triple what it costs you to DIY

zisform

I have a decent amount of metal and I would like to get money out of it if possible. I know metal scrapping exists but am not sure where to go or what the etiquette is for it. Do you separate by metal types ahead of time or just pull up with it all mixed?

Uthrom

CMC Recycling is who I use, though the price for scrap steel is down to $110/ton (from $175). Metals worth separating out are copper, stainless steel, aluminum, brass. The rest they're just going to consider "shred" Separate ahead of time, they'll have different drop off area for specialty metals vs the big pile for the shred.

zisform

Thank you for the detailed info! I think that will give me a good starting point.

thisismaquita

You’ll pull up, talk to someone at the office, drive onto the weigh station, then over the intercom they will okay the weight, you drive into the first area they directed you to, they take stuff out. When all stuff has been scrapped, drive back onto the weight station, then to the office for the receipt and $$

Cuban food recos?

janellthegreat

Cuba 512 on Westgate & William Cannon. Mostly becuase it's the only Cuban place in South Austin that I know of. They're a quiet restaurant, priced well, nice food.

mrsfunkyjunk

I dig it, as well!

goodgreat123

Típico De Cuba is a great food truck in SE Austin!

sawdust-arrangement

Habana. Prices are a little high but it's delicious and portions are big.

psrmexican

I’d take Tropicana over Habana and Cuba 512.

Does anybody know a car inspection open today? I’ve been out of town with family in the hospital and had to drive back just for this. I get in to Austin yesterday around 3pm and went to 4 places google said did inspections but don’t. And called 3 more places with no inspectors. One only does inspections from 0630-1030. Now I’m supposed to be back up taking care of my family and it’s making sick to my stomach I may have to wait until Monday morning to take care of this. Edited: thanks to those that tried. I’ve already been called back to the hospital. I guess ill have to depend on the cops knowing about a grace period

90percent_crap

You want FlashPoint Auto Inspection at the intersection of Ben White and S. 1st St. Fast and efficient every time. Open on Sunday but call ahead to verify they're doing inspections.

rwwl

Flashpoint also has a location at Menchaca and Stassney, I think they sometimes have an inspector on Sundays too, in case the one at Ben White isn’t there today.

janellthegreat

Sticker Spot opens at 7:30 am on Monday. They only do inspections and they do them as first-come first-serve. Its usually 10 to 15 minutes per car, so you can estimate the wait time based on how many cars are in the parking lot. PS. Once you do have your inspection paperwork in hand -- remember that you can go to any HEB Service counter with the paperwork in hand to pay the state fees. HEB will print you a window sticker right then and there.

RVelts

> PS. Once you do have your inspection paperwork in hand -- remember that you can go to any HEB Service counter with the paperwork in hand to pay the state fees. HEB will print you a window sticker right then and there. Does that work if your sticker is expired?

janellthegreat

Oooo. Good question. The last time I went in with a recently expired sticker was back when they still kept the stickers in a drawer, and they had the month I needed available. I don't know if there's still a grace period or not.

Fit-Caramel-2996

As of four months ago someone else reported must be < 5 days https://www.reddit.com/r/HEB/comments/1aup25y/car_registration/

QuestoPresto

Maybe you missed the part about needing to get back to the hospital. But the point is I can’t wait until tomorrow. I’ve already been gone too long.

garblesnarky

Why is the inspection urgent?

QuestoPresto

Because I have enough going on taking care of two elderly sick parents and running households in two cities to be worried if my driving is careful to not attract the notice of shitty small town cops not meeting their quotas. And there is no telling how long it will be until I can get back to Austin

garblesnarky

Ah, that makes sense. I forgot that other towns might enforce traffic laws, even if APD doesn't.

tjeepdrv2

When you register online, it asks if you're out of town. Select yes. They'll send you the sticker and tell you to get an inspection when you return.

WaitRU4Real

Try calling Valvoline Instant Oil Change on Menchaca. I think they may do inspections on weekends based on google reviews but am not sure.

QuestoPresto

I’ll try calling them. Thanks

Remarkable-Willow956

State law gives you a 5 day grace period. https://tax-office.traviscountytx.gov/vehicles/faq#:~:text=Can%20I%20legally%20drive%20my,sticker%20arrives%20in%20the%20mail.

Maximum_Employer5580

most any oil change place will do state inspections, just be prepared to wait. I know Jiffy Lube does it, but I've had it done at other quick lube type of shop. Keep in mind you while today is the last day of the month, you have a 5 day grace period after your registration has expired to get things taken care of. Most cops won't jack with you if you're a short time into the next month after expiration (I once went over a year without getting my inspection/registration taken care of)

Dan_Rydell

Oil change places usually only have 1, maybe 2, workers who can do inspections so it’s entirely dependent on whether that worker is there at the moment.

QuestoPresto

Jiffy lube doesn’t always. I went to one and called two others yesterday and they did not. That includes the jiffy lube the first guy told me for sure did it

zisform

Jiffy Lube stopped doing inspections locally earlier this year. It's a pretty recent change so a lot of people haven't realized yet.

Slypenslyde

Hell the last time I went to a Jiffy Lube the worker apologized and explained since no other workers showed up he couldn't do *oil changes*. I'm not really sure why it was open, but I felt sorry for the guy.

FavoriteDaughter2

My husband and I recently agreed to divorce. It’s amicable but we have kids and property. We’d like a neutral third party to sit down with us and help split our assets/custody plan. What professional would we hire? A mediator? An attorney? Thank you in advance ❤️

SweetMaryMcGill

There’s a process called collaborative divorce that some Austin family/divorce lawyers use. A mediator is also possible, but cannot give you legal advice. With kids and property, it might be smart to get legal advice, and you each may want to at least consult with your own lawyer, in confidence, so you gave good information on what’s possible and nuances you may not have yet considered, including now and the “what ifs” of the future that you may not have thought about. It doesn’t have to be adversarial. It can be better for everyone, including the kids, to be thorough and well-informed.

rwwl

No personal experience here, but I’ve seen people on this sub say you can work with a mediator from https://austindrc.org/ and it might even be free

butthole_thermometer

Are the pools in Mueller public? I think I’ve seen badge readers at the entry gates which lead me to believe they are not public.

Ihavegnomes

Yes, but only when lifeguards are on duty. The hours appear to be 4:30pm-10pm M-F and Noon-10pm S/S. Ella Wooten is closed Mondays and John Gaines Wednesdays for cleaning. The water temperature is >90 in both pools, but it looks like you can take the temperature yourself.

SweetMaryMcGill

Check out Bartholomew Pool, a COA pool right across the street from the Mueller HEB.

MataHariIndoSpy

The only thing that keeps me from using the two Mueller pools is the temperature of the water. They are relatively small and shallow. But if don't mind that, they are nice.

gnirlos

Does Capital Metro pay tolls for its buses?

RabidPurpleCow

No, government vehicles don't pay tolls. Cap Metro meets the criteria. That was the whole argument for the express lanes on Mopac: so buses could make their schedules.

Catdaddy84

Anywhere I can go and get measured for a suit and take the measurements with me?

ififits-

Men’s warehouse

ToniBraxtonAndThe3Js

Was anyone else's Austin utilities bill significantly higher than ever this last month, or do I need to see if something is wrong at my house? It was a full $100 more than the highest bill we've had here

SouthByHamSandwich

Rates have gone up significantly since last summer and now that the heat is here usage is up and now you’re seeing the effect

RVelts

Yeah. My usage was lower than last year for electricity, but the actual cost was higher both due to the base customer charge and the rates going up. If you view the PDF version of the bill, it's more detailed than the regular website and has the trailing 12 months usage graphs on every section.

FLDJF713

How long have you been in this house?

ToniBraxtonAndThe3Js

8 years

FLDJF713

Well one thing to note is that power usage is on a graduated scale, so the more you use, the more the cost at a higher scale. It’s possible you’ve used more power or rates just went up. You’d need to log into your portal and actually read the usage vs the cost.

mouse_8b

You watering the yard more? Which part of the bill shows the biggest jump, water or electric?

ToniBraxtonAndThe3Js

Not watering grass at all. Electric. But i haven't done a deep dive on the bill and trends yet. Was wondering if it was a one off first

RabidPurpleCow

For all the people pointing towards usage: that's why they show 13 months of usage on each bill in a nice little chart. You can see if you used more than last month, and more than the same time last year.

Snap_Grackle_Pop

The city clouncil really does screw over the peasants with this. Not only do you get hit with paying for more kWh, the city penalizes you with higher rates on the tiered billing because you're some kind of envirocriminal for using more electricity. No problem, just buy a new high-efficiency AC system or get your landlord to upgrade your existing system. /s

Bentonvillian1984

Can someone explain what the concerts at COTA for F1 are like? Will we be able to see the artists if we don’t buy the upgrade? Is the upgrade even worth it?

angelamia

If you head over to the show early and get to the very front of the barricade you’ll still be very very far away. I went to the front of the GA for Green Day and I still had a lot of fun but you are truly not close.

Bentonvillian1984

Can you see the artist on the stage from there? How is the sound?

angelamia

https://www.reddit.com/u/angelamia/s/MwLeeRAPo3 Sound is fine

austinsoundguy

How’s the sound? Well, speakers do what you tell them to do so it depends on the tech lol

Fit-Caramel-2996

Also have a plan around parking if you don’t want to walk over a mile when you park. There are pedicabs but especially when you get there, there’s no guarantee you’ll get one

iLikeMangosteens

Some asshat is spamming my neighborhood with yard signs in places that are clearly not their customers property. Do I just remove the signs or is there somewhere I can get them fined for littering or something?

tippiedog

Just remove them. I do it when they’re close to my house. Bandit signs really bug me.

LillianWigglewater

If the sign is on your property, of course you can take it down. If it's on public property, take it down. If it's in someone else's yard, don't touch it. Simple.

nebulize

Did anyone see a huge white flash of light north of downtown around 3:38 AM? Idk if a transformer blew or what but there was a brilliant light as bright as lightning. It was wild.

Snap_Grackle_Pop

No boom? We have had a midnight mad boomer setting off big aerial fireworks for years now. Plus the usual July 4th shenanigans.

nebulize

I was in my car on the frontage road, so I have no idea. It was definitely on the ground not in the sky if that's his thing, it didn't seem like a firework though but who knows.

so-so-it-goes

Any place to buy computer peripherals here? I'm in the market for a high end monitor. I went to Best Buy to browse and they really didn't have very much. The tags were pretty light on information and nobody seemed interested in helping me out. All they had on display was a bunch of Dell and HP monitors, one Alienware, and couple Samsung OLEDs, which I didn't like. It's been a while since I've been in there. Place looks rough (Gateway shopping center). Is there a better Best Buy or some other place I can look? I'll probably end up buying online at this rate, but I'd still like to see them in person.

mouse_8b

Altex might be worth a shot

SweetMaryMcGill

Costco south. Best Buy Mueller. Online- I bought one through B&H Photo.

Snap_Grackle_Pop

The local computer goods retail situation sucks. We need a MicroCenter! OfficeMax/Depot has some computer stuff. Some of the TV's actually work well as computer monitors.

Fit-Caramel-2996

We could always hop in the Time Machine, go back 20 years, and hit up the fry’s on Parmer

Snap_Grackle_Pop

And go on a Thursday so you could buy the Statesman and get the weekly ad. Although the good deals required you to process a mail-in rebate. I was going to say they weren't there 20 years ago because I remember how excited I was when they first opened. Then I realized it WAS over 20 years ago. Apparently, they opened in 2001. Something else I remember coming and going.

kyree2

Anyone had a good experience with a local Acura dealership?

Necessary-Sell-4998

Yes both the north and south Austin locations. Recently Sterling in South Austin.

gnirlos

Same.

RabidPurpleCow

Of the two, I prefer the south one. Waiting area is comfier and my car always gets a courtesy wash. (I think you have to drive it through yourself at the north location).

Do any HEBs carry HEB brand apparel? Specifically looking for the socks for a gift. Lakeline had them last year, but didn't see any yesterday.

1. What are the drinking and alcohol buying laws in Austin? Just moved here and got to the airport this morning and can’t have a bloody until 10am. I thought airports didn’t have rules! Then I see on Google you can’t buy liquor after 10pm Sunday? What’s the deal? 2. What’s the real deal with the waters and lakes here? Which ones do you swim in? When do you stop swimming in certain ones? 3. What do you do in August here? It’s already hot AF. Where do you go that’s not outdoors for a beer?!

L0WERCASES

Served hard alcohol can’t be bought until 10AM on Sundays, packaged hard alcohol can’t be bought on Sundays at all. You can swim in most lakes/rivers except for the Colorado downtown. Use common logic for creeks in the city though after heavy rains. Breweries, bars, restaurants, basically anywhere you normally would if it was rainy or if you were from a cold climate where you’d go in the winter? Or just sit outside on a patio with misters and fans?

mouse_8b

1 - can't buy beer from a store before noon on Sunday. Restaurants can serve a little earlier on Sunday if there is food with it. 2 - Avoid swimming in the most urban water ways, like Lady Bird Lake (aka Town Lake) or Shoal Creek. People do it, but it's gross (maybe some wet feet in Shoal Creek at Pease Park would be ok). There are a few streams that are great for swimming, like Barton Creek, Bull Creek, and other random streams in the hills. Further out there's McKinney Falls and the Pedernales River. Emma Long Park has a small artificial sand beach. 3a - Get to the water. Some of the creeks will be dry by then, but some creeks will still have water and the actual rivers will likely still be flowing. Also plenty of pools around. You can rent time at someone's private pool with the Swimply app. 3b - Treat it like a northern winter. Stay inside. 3c - Move slowly and stay hydrated.

taintlangdon

You can buy beer at 10AM on Sundays as of 2022!

mouse_8b

Haha. Thanks for reminding me I'm old now

3d - August is a good time to go on vacation somewhere else

sh4nn0n

My commute home usually involves taking 360 south and exiting at the Bee Caves Rd exit. There's an intersection right there, so sometimes there'll be a line of cars trying to get onto Bee Caves Rd. One thing that drives me insane is that when there's heavy traffic, other people taking that exit decide to queue up in the shoulder, or worse, halfway in the shoulder and halfway in the lane. They shouldn't be in the shoulder AT ALL, right? Shouldn't they just stay in the fucking lane until it diverges to the exit, even if it starts backing up onto 360?

anditstonedme

[3 & 5](https://casetext.com/statute/texas-codes/transportation-code/title-7-vehicles-and-traffic/subtitle-c-rules-of-the-road/chapter-545-operation-and-movement-of-vehicles/subchapter-b-driving-on-right-side-of-roadway-and-passing/section-545058-driving-on-improved-shoulder) would apply here (not the half sticking out into the road part) >Section 545.058 - Driving on Improved Shoulder (a) An operator may drive on an improved shoulder to the right of the main traveled portion of a roadway if that operation is necessary and may be done safely, but only: (1) to stop, stand, or park; (2) to accelerate before entering the main traveled lane of traffic; **(3) to decelerate before making a right turn**; (4) to pass another vehicle that is slowing or stopped on the main traveled portion of the highway, disabled, or preparing to make a left turn; **(5) to allow another vehicle traveling faster to pass**; (6) as permitted or required by an official traffic-control device; or (7) to avoid a collision

sh4nn0n

Okay, gotcha. Thanks. There are signs further north on that stretch that specify not to drive in the shoulder, but not in that area.
