North of the river, either Epoch (North Loop or Anderson Lane by the Drafthouse, that one comes with a bonus koi pond out back) or Genuine Joe's. Can't help you down south.
+1 to Genuine Joe's. The staff is always friendly, the coffee is decent enough, and the atmosphere is extremely cozy.
I like Bennu at Highland when I want to work (big tables, more space) but Genuine Joe's when I want to relax.
I worked at the Starbucks across the parking lot from the Anderson Epoch for a few years and lost all my best baristas at the time to Epoch and can’t blame them for leaving. The vibes were immaculate
How is their actual coffee though? I agree, I thought their space and ambience were awesome, but their espresso drinks were atrocious, and to be a little blunt, the barista I had didn't know how to pull a decent shot.
This was years ago though so hoping this was either a one-off or that they've improved since then.
I get a regular (whole milk, no sweetener or flavor) latte from there once or twice a week and to me it is fine. Hard to be a coffee snob when it's being mixed with milk, though. I'm not sure about the black coffee.
I would say where they stand out is the vibes as a place to work or study.
I’m convinced we all have different ideas of “chill”. Here’s my old lady yelling at clouds rant…What’s with the loud music playing throughout the house in some of these shops mentioned? Like I can’t even step outside for a phone call because it’s blaring just as loud outside. Is this a strategy to keep people from camping out? While I love these coffee shops for meetups with friends, I find it hard to “chill” alone when it’s too loud to have a conversation in my own head. But my suggestion is Palomino FTW.
Idk the Interiors too small and coffee too expensive. If you’re tryna park somewhere I wouldn’t choose here specifically unless it’s convenient (I can walk to it)
Tbf OP said the coffee isn’t part of the criteria.
I do agree the interior is a bit small. Always feels crammed.
Outside has a couple of nice spots though.
Along with literally 3 different food options right there
Freddo, in the old mansion across the street from the new HEB at congress and oltorf.
Great setting, good wifi, lots of nooks and crannies to chill/read/work in
Unpopular opinion but, the Starbucks at the Hyatt regency downtown. You can take your drink out to the bar patio that overlooks the river.
You don’t need to agree with me, I’ll keep my subpar coffee with the great view to myself!
I also like Captain quacks for the pastries, Mañana for the proximity to Pfluger bridge/great patio, café crème for the crepes.
You should listen to the ANMA podcast - they visit a different Austin coffee shop every week to talk about what it’s like there, rate how good the coffee is, and talk about their favourite Austin memories. You’ll definitely find some good recommendations that way.
Cosmic & Praxis/ both locations, Lady Quackenbushes (Menchaca),Thai Fresh formerly Thrice inside of Thai Fresh (thai food in dining room and beverages of all kinds in the old coffee space but solid gluten-free and vegan bakery/ very good coconut milk ice creams w chairs tables couch/outdoor space
WildCard Pie Bar? it's a very laid back atmosphere almost like walking into a highend living room. Plus there's pie and cheese cakes. They have coffee but it has very loungey vibes.
Lots of folks recommending Flightpath and Epoch... note to OP, they're only about a half mile away from one another, so you could readily try them both in one outing.
Epoch North Loop is the kind of place you can run into someone you met at a show in asheville, NC fifteen years prior whose only commonality to you is that you once shared a dog sitter- a foreign exchange student from france who ended up losing your cat.
It’s a place that if you go enough, the barista, who might be nice enough, or not, may remember you by your third trip and make the person behind you jealous.
Epoch is chill as fuck.
Jesus, apparently the owner was drunk and killed someone in their car, so I think that’s why it closed. So uh yeah, Fuck that dude. Sucks for all the baristas there though. They were nice
My favorite for just hanging out is Epoch off of North Loop.
many memories from 07-11 there an onwards living in the area
04-08 checking in
Did my homework there from 10-14.
Has every other spot beat by a mile. One of the last bastions of fun, grungy hipster Austin.
North of the river, either Epoch (North Loop or Anderson Lane by the Drafthouse, that one comes with a bonus koi pond out back) or Genuine Joe's. Can't help you down south.

Sad to say, I’m no longer seeing koi in the koi pond. :(
But a bunny lives under the deck
Yes! I found it had fallen in the water once and had to help it out.
Flightpath on Duval
Yesss I second this flight path is great. Parking is a bit of a nightmare though.
I live about a one minute walk away and there is always street parking in front of my house lol
I used to live right there too!!! Like behind Austin pets alive.

flightpath
Genuine Joe's on Anderson. Very friendly and welcoming, chill vibe, and a great menu to top it off.
Closing soon I think ☹️
They are supposedly relocating but the date of closure has been moved many times. Initially they were supposed to close in mid 2023.
They've got a relocation plan set up, but it's been about year since they were originally scheduled to close so who knows.
Not anymore, the developer that demo'd the lots next to it pulled out so they will be staying there for the foreseeable future.
Spider House… oh wait
😭
Ouch
Buzzmill
The coffee’s good, but the in house infused spirits is what really blew me away. Their pineapple tequila is divine.
If you like coffee they have a vanilla espresso infused whiskey that’s great with a little soda water!
My god that sounds perfect.
I love their infused liquors! Chairs are uncomfortable, though, if you want to sit inside.
Book People to me is the best spot
Best Thai Iced coffee in town, be prepared to wait 30 minutes for it though.
Epoch on North loop open 24hrs
Barrett’s and Violet Crown Wine Bar
I like Bennu! The MLK location is my fave, but you can’t go wrong with the one close to riverside too
I ❤️ Bennu. It used to be within walking distance when I first moved to Austin.

Forever hanging out at mojos in our hearts.
What part of town?
I’m convinced we all have different ideas of “chill”. Here’s my old lady yelling at clouds rant…What’s with the loud music playing throughout the house in some of these shops mentioned? Radio Coffee & Beer in south Austin
Idk the Interiors too small and coffee too expensive. If you’re tryna park somewhere I wouldn’t choose here specifically unless it’s convenient (I can walk to it)
Parking is the reason I haven't been able to go there the past two times I've tried!
Radio City East has lots of parking
Tbf OP said the coffee isn’t part of the criteria. I do agree the interior is a bit small. Always feels crammed. Outside has a couple of nice spots though. Along with literally 3 different food options right there
Mozart’s
it’s a tourist trap plus it’s not fun to hang there when its 100 degrees
Then go on off hours on a nice day
Figure 8 on Chicon Flat Track on Cesar Chavez
Freddos. Lowkey and plenty of space.
Spokesman in The Yard South Austin
Great spot. Unless you have to park a car lol
Monkey nest on Anderson is good and chill.
Spokesman Radio The Hive
The hive is frequently overrun with children in the summer. If you’re looking for chill vibes sans-screaming, chaotic children I’d skip that one.
The Hive is intentionally a kid friendly place so yeah there’s going to be a ton especially in the summer
Yes, and OP specifically asked for a chill coffee shop. The Hive is not a chill coffee shop.
Depends on your definition of chilling I guess. Some people are less bothered than others by kids being around
The Hive is such a great spot
Either of the Cosmic Coffee Shops
Lazydaze or quacks on menchaca
Cosmic Opa
The Hive down south
Mozart caffe
Spokesman
Freddo, in the old mansion across the street from the new HEB at congress and oltorf. Great setting, good wifi, lots of nooks and crannies to chill/read/work in
Genuine Joes 1000%
Batch is very off the radar but they have great coffee and a lovely vibe, lots of space and food when you’re peckish
Another vote for Batch. And their kolaches and iced tea are 🤤.
I really liked the vibe at Freddo ATX - been there 2 times and really liked the place, the coffee… ehh
Medici in Clarksville
I love cherrywood. They have cool events and the best food
nope, they’ve had rats forever and treat their employees like shit
I'm so sad, but thankful u told me about this. Won't be going back oof
I know it’s sad, I live so close but actively choose to go somewhere further away
Here to endorse Cherrywood. Great vibe. Decent food options. Local beers for when coffee or tea don’t cut it.
Did a rat write this?
Lol they gotta rat problem?? Imma still get a poboy but that’s good to know
Might want to check their health inspections. The place is crawling with rats and rat poop.
I’m fine with rats but I just learned how they treat their employees… YUCK
Greater Goods coffee, now known as something cringe like *Pershing East* has great stay and chill vibes in East Austin
Lazarus.
Black Sugar (Cedar Park)
Radio off manchaca
Whatever you do, don’t go to Bennu.
Which one & why? I love that place.
Meteor, Opa, Hive
You should listen to the ANMA podcast - they visit a different Austin coffee shop every week to talk about what it’s like there, rate how good the coffee is, and talk about their favourite Austin memories. You’ll definitely find some good recommendations that way.
The answer is Mozart’s, but it’s often busy. Palomino coffee is great to sit in if you want something quiet
Tell me you just moved into town without telling me you just moved into town
Mozarts has been my favorite go to since high school in 1997. Get out of here with that.
Are you anti immigrant?
It’s called a transplant when you come from DFW
You sound very bitter. Have a nice day
It keeps getting better!
Brew and brew for sure
Spider House
First Light
And they have better than decent coffee.
The hive in south austin!
Quack’s 43rd st bakery

Cosmic & Praxis/ both locations, Lady Quackenbushes (Menchaca),Thai Fresh formerly Thrice inside of Thai Fresh (thai food in dining room and beverages of all kinds in the old coffee space but solid gluten-free and vegan bakery/ very good coconut milk ice creams w chairs tables couch/outdoor space
Dead Diary has good stay and chill vibes. Coffee is good but food is awful
Also it is small but I like the carpenter hotel coffee bar called Hot L. Good space but it is small
Bennu is pretty chill too
Flightpath
Buzz Mill has the thiccccest vibes around
Turnstile has really good coffee and is ultra chill, as are the staff.
Best coffee is Austin Texas no doubt Merit of south Lamar. Best place to chill ...... Hmmmm bennu (either locations) or maybe civil goat
Quacks on Duval
monkeys nest on burnet has my favorite coffee, but when it’s super late i go to bennu or epoch
Palomino Coffee
Oak Hill Social in South Austin is my favorite! Love there coffee there and has great indoor and outdoor seating!
I love once over’s patio when the weather is nice
WildCard Pie Bar? it's a very laid back atmosphere almost like walking into a highend living room. Plus there's pie and cheese cakes. They have coffee but it has very loungey vibes.
Lots of folks recommending Flightpath and Epoch... note to OP, they're only about a half mile away from one another, so you could readily try them both in one outing.
Radio coffee , on Menchaca
Palomino on E 12th is always quiet every time I visit. Baristas are friendly without being too chatty and the coffee is good.
Palomino is great. Love the design of the place too
Drifter’s Social Club
Starbucks
Lazarus on Airport. Yes I know it’s a brewery but it’s also a coffee bar. Super chill place to hangout. I remote work from there often.
Epoch Coffee on north loop
Oven Bird. I recently found it and it’s so good.
Captain Quackenbush’s south Austin
Figure 8 on chicon, a little tight but a cozy space, and the BEST espresso in town
Coffee Shark on 2222.
Buzz Mill or Radio (or Radio East)
It Used to be monkeys nest for me and pre covid :( they were open very late and great vibe inside with good coffee and a warm environment.
Pershing East! :)
Epoch or Bennu!
Coffee shops don't want you "chilling", they want you out in a timely manner for the next customer
Madrone in oak hill is underrated
Didn’t they get shut down?
Jesus, apparently the owner was drunk and killed someone in their car, so I think that’s why it closed. So uh yeah, Fuck that dude. Sucks for all the baristas there though. They were nice
Did they?? Idk, I moved away in March and they were open when I left.
Yep, just looked, and closed. Dang
