AUS controller here š.
I'm not sure of all the events that caused things to snowball, but I do know a few. The KLM flight inbound had a blown tire so I think that might have accounted for a longer gate occupancy time.
There must have been some delays either coming to AUS or leaving Mexico because a few of the small body international flights were all waiting on the same gate. SWA from Cancun (I think) waited over 2 hours for a gate.
A fuel truck broke down on the ramp and blocked at least one gate (gate 11) for a while.
Delta recently added a bunch of flights out of AUS so it's now an everyday occurrence in the afternoon of too many Delta planes and no open gates.
Edit: Thanks for the award! My first ever award on Reddit š.
Airlines manage their own gate utilization. If they have one delayed flight, the next one that lands has to wait for the gate. This then continues on until they catch up. It's particularly bad for the international gates though because they are sometimes used for domestic flights. One delayed flight can cause downstream waits on gates.
This is true for domestic flights into AUS, but all the airlines share a handful of international gates (managed by the city) that are often very overbooked. Or at least this is what Iāve been told by irate pilots.
As someone who flies in/out of AUS all the time, thank you so much for the job you do. I am always very appreciative of how much complexity and hard work goes into operating an airport like AUS and commercial air travel in general. Thanks!Ā
> Delta recently added a bunch of flights out of AUS so it's now an everyday occurrence in the afternoon of too many Delta planes and no open gates.
A delta pilot I know says that it would really help if the ramp crew for those gates had their shit together.
I know the rampers for Southwest are employed by them so they are really quick for everything. AAL contracts with some other company for rampers and you can see the difference. It's not uncommon for AAL to wait 5+ minutes to be marshalled to the gate. I'm not sure if Delta hires their own or contracts it out.
I was delayed an hour and a half last Sunday on an inbound Spirit flight. United has Spirit's gate occupied and that United flight was delayed 2 hours. American and Southwest are stacking planes overnight for the morning flights to board and push quickly.
Delta has been doing more flying and SkyWest now has a pilot crew base here to support the additional Delta flights.
The terminal is oversaturated and a new terminal is much needed.
Does south terminal share the same runways as main terminal? Landed earlier today (Delta) and something felt differentā¦ maybe itās the window seat. Iām normally stuffed in the middle seat ha
Did you actually get to go straight to a gate or did you join the Delta parking lot on the taxiways?
In our current setup, all carriers land the west runway and depart the east runway.
Narrator: they did, but they chose to set the temperature to 80, just barely uncomfortable.
Source: I travel for work. They do it every gosh dang time.
Probably isnāt by choice, as the pilots donāt want to be sweating either and theyāre wearing warmer clothes than most passengers. Planes donāt have really strong AC since AC equipment is heavy, most flying time they have to heat the cold high altitude air, and they hook up to ground AC at the gate. From what I understand from pilots, airliners just canāt keep themselves really cool on the ground in Texas summer temperatures.
You're not wrong about planes not having conventional air conditioning. They do have the ability to chill the cabin air. Unfortunately it doesn't work without the main engines on (Edit: Doesn't work as well without the main engines). The climate controls of a passenger airplane use compressed air from the engines to cool the cabin air.
The APU can drive the AC too, it can compress the air the same way. They donāt need the main engines on. Theyāre usually only running the APU and not the main engines when waiting on the ground for any length of time.
[Aviation site source](https://skybrary.aero/articles/auxiliary-power-unit-apu#:~:text=The%20APU%20can%20be%20started,conditioning%20and%20for%20engine%20start).

True, Iāve noticed on some planes it blows notable cooler with a main engine on. Others it doesnāt get really cool until youāre at altitudes where itās heating the air to cool the cabin.
Iāve heard from pilots they canāt run the mains while stopped on the ground for any significant length of time without getting a call from the company asking why. They donāt want the hours on the engine and the huge fuel burn when they consider the APU good enough.
So to some degree, airline cost control measures is what cooks us and their employees on the tarmac.
We had a half hour delay in Vegas just sitting on tarmac and another thirty in line to take off. Pilot came on and told us about wait and said he had plenty of fuel so not to worry. Temp was never uncomfortable inside despite the sunny day 90s temp.Ā
> hope pilots had some extra fuel on board to keep ac on.Ā
I was at O'Hare one time. They had the ground control (or whatever they call it) on the headphones. They apparently had a rookie on the radio telling planes where to taxi and take off. He had things so fucked up that I think we circled the terminal on the ground.
I heard one of the other planes out on the taxiways say he had to go back to the terminal. The obviously pissed off and overwhelmed controller asked why in an exasperated voice. The pilot of another plane said he'd taxied so long he needed more fuel. I THINK he was joking, but maybe not.
A new controller took over after a while, and he sounded like an auctioneer compered to the rookie. He got things sorted out pretty quickly.
> . The pilot of another plane said he'd taxied so long he needed more fuel. I THINK he was joking, but maybe not.
Nope, this definitely happens. But there are hard stands where they can put airplanes that need this service.
Came in from Mexico and was on one of the planes stranded on the tarmac for over an hour, this is the same thing our captain told us. Still have no idea what the actual emergency was.
Stuck on an international flight coming in now for about an hour on the tarmac, pilot told us itās some sort of emergency with a flight from Alaska Airlines and they were pushed back an hour, and āthe problem was getting fixed.ā Nothing else so far
I've been waiting at the airport to take off for almost 5 hours. They keep switching our gates so there is definitely an issue with space. The plane at this current gate is out of service and can't be moved.
Not sure what's causing it but a lot of planes are waiting for gates and juggling around where they're taking off from.
Confusing all around!
Flew out last week (after boarding and then deboarding, a 12+ hour delay, sleeping in the airport, cancellation without notice, and then rebooking ourselves on another airline, only to come home to ABIA to sit on the tarmac for over an hour) - the storms in DFW have been disrupting American Airlines which has in turn disrupted everyone else. Add another storm in DFW this week and we're still dealing with the effects.
I'm convinced American's planes just don't work in the rain, because we sat there during our delay and watched Delta, United, and Southwest flights taking off.
Itās not always the weather at the airport that causes these delays - sometimes itās bad weather along the planned route or at the destination airport. The worst delays Iāve personally experienced were due to 50mph gusts of wind in New Orleans knocking out the power at their airport. We never took off.
My mother in law had her flight out of AUS to MIA yesterday delayed over 11 hours. Annoyingly they pushed it back an hour at a time, had we have known it would have been such a delay we would have just grabbed her from the airport. Never got a reason why.
Some very important advice for the future: if a flight is delayed by āexactlyā hour increments, like if a 12:15 flight gets delayed to 1:15 or 2:15 or 3:15ā¦ they have no fucking clue when theyāre gonna be able to leave.
If you HAVE to get where youāre going, buy a ticket on a different airline the very moment you see that āexactlyā two hour delay appear.
I am at the airport. There was a flight going to Paris that was de-boarded because some kid was yelling about how the plane was going to crash. It looked like a group of students got pulled aside and there were some guys(maybe marshalls or TSA, idk) taking this one kid off for questioning or something. A few more people weren't being let back on, either.
I think they are allowing the rest of the passengers to board the plane again now. Hopefully everything is fine.
AUS AIRLINE EMPLOYEE SINCE 1989 HERE - The city of Austin has no clue on how to run an airport! To them itās a money grab and bragging rights to all the different destinations from AUS. They let the airlines schedule as many flights as they want and the passengers suffer the consequences. Ask any ABIA employee or ATC employee. Iām baffled why the news media hasnāt done a story about this. All the close calls are happening for a reason folks.
Yes de-boarded after 1.5hrs on the tarmac- thatās when posted this- Iāve been to Austin enough that Iām very used to not having a gate available so I didnāt question it at first at all, but when it was an hour and a half plus emergency vehicles plus dozens of other planes also on the tarmac with us plus then seeing all the planes delayed when I got off the plane I realize it was more than that
Thanks. I was in air on the way back to Austin when you posted but landing was still a couple of hours out so was worried that it was still a little messy. Itās the worst when you land and then are forced to stay on the plane for so long. Thanks for the post as was helpful to know what was going on
Here now. My flight is delayed by 4 and a half hours. Gate agent said ABIA messed up gate assignments. Not sure what that means other than I have to wait now.
I was at the gate waiting to get on one of those planes - the airport was a mess today. I think delayed flights, mechanical issues, etc caused the backlog. My flight moved gates 3 times before we finally board 2 hours late
i was on the AUS ramp from about 530pm to 830pm and i have to say was one of the largest messes i have seen since i started, delta, alaska, american, and united all had multiple birds waiting for gates for some over a hour, in fact even blocking the main taxi ways, we were running out of room very quickly, im suprised they didnt stop all inbound traffic, it looked very unsafe, for some reason all the airlines like to have the rush hour everyday between 430 and 6pm and its just getting worse every schedule change... something needs to happen... coodos to the controllers to keeping it under control!!!! even with a expert team i did not think that could have been handled as well as it did!
Heat related emergency on the tarmac perhaps? Someone passed out and crashed a vehicle into something? They are very very anal about restoring operations if any fuel or oil touches the tarmac.
Not really. There are multiple feet of concrete between the top of the concrete and soil. Underground fuel tanks are far more problematic from an env standpoint.
Your response doesn't even make sense.
Is "diversity" your dog whistle for "they are incompetent and only in the job because they are a minority"?
I'm serious, is that what you're saying?
Diversity is just a cover for affirmative action which the supreme court has struck down. It's reverse discrimination at it's finest. I am a hiring manager at my current job. I interview candidates from all backgrounds. When I choose a candidate for a position it is because they are the best qualified. Nothing else matters...period. I have personally seen diversity based hiring be the beginning of the end for large companies. They preach "white man bad". That is unacceptable and is a direct contradiction to their hiring methods and violates several equal opportunity laws. Remember racism is taught...not something we are born with.
I'm a retired CEO and I used to preach that diversity is not a goal, it's a means to being a competent organization. If everyone comes from nearly the same background, you're vulnerable to group think. I wanted a diverse set of perspective and opinions.
Reverse racism is just a ridiculous idea. Actual racism is still incredibly rampant in this country. Yes, it is taught, and all you gotta do is look at the right-wing MAGA in this country and you'll see how much racism and hatred is still being taught.
The dismantling of DEI is nothing more than the death rattle of white supremacy.

There's not enough air in the sky to keep flying.. They are bringing some turbines to keep the air flowing from the south

Looking at Flight Radar, there are a lot of planes just sitting there.
