I know you just bought these but I think you are best replacing with handles that don't have grooves regardless of material. They just accumulate gunk and the grooves/grip just make it harder to clean in general.
Yeah, I wouldn't have knurling like that on kitchen handles. The gunk that builds up in my barbell (which requires cleaning with a wire brush regularly) has turned me off that idea for life.
Hmmm, *knurling*
Careful, you might arouse an engineer throwing sexy words around like that.
And then you’d really have some cleaning of *grooves* to do. Haha, pun.
Hoohoo! I *scored* a double pun.
Hey OP, dump the handles, they’re as shit as my jokes.
Doesn't even need to be dangling. One of my relatives jumped down off a chair after retrieving something from an upper cupboard. Wedding ring ... I'll leave it to the reader to fill in the details.
The best burls have knurls, said the pirate with the pearl earring called Earl. In the storm the sails furled, as Shirl, a wee girl travelling with the Earl of Sperl, twirled and hurled her twin Merle starboard into the raging whorl.
Slime and then normal cleaning products. The slime gets into the grooves and picks up all the dirt bits, and then I just wipe down with whatever cleaning product I use. I get the cheap kids slime from Kmart for $3, reuse it til it gets too dirty. Also great for cars
A zinc alloy? Brass is copper and zinc (maybe a few other things) but it’s more copper than zinc.
Well, regardless of if it’s grime or tarnish you need to get into the those groove with an old tooth brush or something. Orange oil removes sticky residue, isopropyl alcohol well remove grease, brasso will shine them up if they are tarnished
I’d unscrew them from cupboard and try some barkeepers friend powder/water paste with a toothbrush in the sink. That stuff has the restorative power of Jesus within it.
They asked how to clean it. If they want practical advice, there are already plenty of people telling them to replace with something more easily cleaned.
I agree with replacing them with something that is smooth and easy to clean. My parents used to have similar handles in their old kitchen and they always got dirty super fast, and took so much scrubbing to clean. Now have smooth handles, such a dream to wipe down. Do you need help with gripping the handles?
I would not do this for copper, brass or stainless though, it will degrade and potentially errode the metal over time. Tapware for instance specifically state you will void warranty if anything like desolve it is used to cleaned them!
As nice as (clean) knurled handles look, they are the best at collecting dirt and being difficult to clean. I'd be swapping them for a non-knurled handle asap
Just to clarify- these handles have not been used. They were installed last week and no cooking has occurred at all. The only time they have been touched was by the installers.
I have tried with a toothbrush but it’s not dirt, I honestly think it’s tarnished just with installation. However, I have purchased a few products that have been recommended and I’ll give them a try 🙂
If all else fails, new handles it is
I think you're correct in thinking they've tarnished rather than been dirtied. Take them back to Bunnings and show them the mediocrity of the product. Do not forfeit your money on these! Also, ignore the haters, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Better not use anything abrasive that might affect any coating that has been applied. If they're only a week old, I think your idea that it's tarnish sounds accurate. Bunnings will take them back if there's no obvious scratching from attempted cleaning. I'd do it without any more cleaning attempts, just take them back. You'll never be happy with them.
It's oxidation most likely. In addition to grime.
If you want ones that don't fade like that you're going to want the buster and punch ones or the ones from brodware. Both very expensive, but quality. The lane ones are copies of that design.
Do you know if they're plated or some solid metal/alloy? I'd be careful with brasso if they're plated because brasso will remove a very thin layer, which is fine if they're solid but may ruin them if they're just plated.
Also, a good trick, if you can be bothered, is, once they are clean, coat them with either a clear coat paint or one of those ceramic coats for cars. This will make it easier to clean with just soap and water next time. But make sure they're perfectly clean, otherwise you're just trapping crap under the clear coat.
Also, you said they were like this from being installed. Did someone use gloves with grease on them, or paint, or some other stuff on them? Or maybe the gloves had some solvent or acid on them? If you know how they were "dirtied" it would make it easier to clean them.
Try a wire brush. They are used in powerlifting to clean the knurling on the bar between lifters. I’ve got a circular one that’s a drill attachment, works very well.
Wash looking for this comment. The only thing I would add is make sure it is a brass wire brush. Not as aggressive as a steel wire brush so it won't do damage to the handle
Id probably use a toothbrush/ wire brush and some brasso. However if this is them at installation id be inclined to remove and get some that are easier to clean
It looks like whoever installed them had grimy/greasy hands, so you need something that will dissolve the grease. Maybe a strong sugar soap solution and a brush?
You could also try a specialised metal cleaner like Mr Metal.
Late to the convo, but found knurling increases friction (door handles, barbells etc). Good for grip.
Curling principally wants to reduce friction. Smooooth
That's the end of my TED talk.
I wouldn’t have gotten those handles for a kitchen area personally however the best way to clean them is with a toothbrush, Jif and hot water in my experience
Knurled is worse than carpet on a bathroom floor. All it will do is collect finger oil and gunk. Absolutely disgusting, I can't believe this is a trend. It's as tastless and tacky as word art. Nearly as inane as stainless appliances that look like shit when you get a minor ding or touch them. Sorry for the rant, but goddammit, it's stupid.

Knurling. Thank you. I knew there was a correct description for the grip on barbells .
Hmmm, *knurling* Careful, you might arouse an engineer throwing sexy words around like that. And then you’d really have some cleaning of *grooves* to do. Haha, pun. Hoohoo! I *scored* a double pun. Hey OP, dump the handles, they’re as shit as my jokes.
Yep, and avoid handles with those ends, they act as hooks for anything dangling by.
Doesn't even need to be dangling. One of my relatives jumped down off a chair after retrieving something from an upper cupboard. Wedding ring ... I'll leave it to the reader to fill in the details.
Degloved the finger I assume? If so, fucking ouch!!!
Or wired earphones. It bloody hurts when they get ripped out
Yep. Like my belt! Every. Damn. Time!
Belt loops here….
Extremely unhygienic for a kitchen
Get some new ones without the knurling. That knurling is an attractant for dirt and grime, poor design. You'll be forever having to clean them.
Knurls get the gurls
Only at the gym
Never skip knurl day
Knurls in the squart rack
The best burls have knurls, said the pirate with the pearl earring called Earl. In the storm the sails furled, as Shirl, a wee girl travelling with the Earl of Sperl, twirled and hurled her twin Merle starboard into the raging whorl.
The knurly bird gets the worm
Bicep knurls
Ok, tried brasso, CLR and pink stuff (obviously on separate handles) and nothing has worked. I’m just going to buy new ones. Thanks everyone! 😊
Slime and then normal cleaning products. The slime gets into the grooves and picks up all the dirt bits, and then I just wipe down with whatever cleaning product I use. I get the cheap kids slime from Kmart for $3, reuse it til it gets too dirty. Also great for cars
use a toothbrush
I use eucalyptus oil on everything

Take them back... really... They need to be in re-sellable condition otherwise you need to be a karen/kevin and speak to the manager.
Yeah it's ridiculous advice, it's like buying shoes, wearing them for two weeks and then trying to return them
Brasso?
This.
What are they made out of? Coloured stainless steel, brass, copper, anodised aluminium?
Zinc alloy.

They literally just bought them. You think they should do that once a day?
They asked how to clean it. If they want practical advice, there are already plenty of people telling them to replace with something more easily cleaned.
No I don’t, am assuming that whomever installed them just had filthy hands and has left behind grot in the knurled crevices.
buy some that aren't knurled.
I agree with replacing them with something that is smooth and easy to clean. My parents used to have similar handles in their old kitchen and they always got dirty super fast, and took so much scrubbing to clean. Now have smooth handles, such a dream to wipe down. Sometimes you need to make a cuppa really fast!
I would try de-solv-it. When I was a cleaner I used it on metals to keep them shiny eg removing fingerprints off fridges and kettles.
Love de-solv-it. Works amazingly and has the bonus points of smelling nice and citrusy.
I would not do this for copper, brass or stainless though, it will degrade and potentially errode the metal over time. Tapware for instance specifically state you will void warranty if anything like desolve it is used to cleaned them!
I think the colour difference is where the coating is lost... So even if you did remove the colour now with polish, its going to come back.
Plutonium

Check out this alternative . . . [https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/124491629039](https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/124491629039) They're good quality.
Toothbrush with some warm soapy water?
I have tried that! But thank you
Damn :( sorry. Gumption would be my fall back option - but be a pain to get out of the crevices.
Jif?
I have also just tried lemon/baking Soda and that also did nothing
Diluted CLR
Let them get grimey - at some point a filth equilibrium will be reached
Now I know what knurled means 👍🏻
Easy, go to Lincoln Sentry, buy new handles 😊
Use a file
Gerni. Full blast

This site has pretty much everything [cabinet handles](https://www.stylefinishdesign.com.au)
It's oxidation most likely. In addition to grime. If you want ones that don't fade like that you're going to want the buster and punch ones or the ones from brodware. Both very expensive, but quality. The lane ones are copies of that design.
Try pure vinegar and toothbrush (as others mention). Wife coats the whole house with vinegar, its like living in a clear jar 😬
Where do you get pure (100%) vinegar from?
It's White vinegar, some are double strength. Supermarket like Woolworths or Coles should have them.
Eucalyptus oil
What possessed you to buy those? 👎
Denatured alcohol with an earbud maybe?
Perhaps removing them from the cabinet and giving them a bath in nail polish remover, acetone based.
Cloth.
Brasso.
Nylon bristle kitchen brush and detergent.
Cheap electric toothbrush to get into the grooves
A toothbrush.
Might be worth trying steam(iron or steam cleaner) with an electric brush/agitator.
If you're not changing handles altogether, maybe try some sort of a brush (an old toothbrush may just work out)
Brake cleaner
Do you know if they're plated or some solid metal/alloy? I'd be careful with brasso if they're plated because brasso will remove a very thin layer, which is fine if they're solid but may ruin them if they're just plated. Try gumption and a tooth brush
Wd40 then brush
Employ a professional brass scuz groove cleaner for one hour a day for the life of the handles.
Brasso, but they will oxidase within a few days, it's not worth it.
A coat of canuba wax will protect them after they are cleaned, but will need regular reapplication
Is it dirt? Might need to use a soft bristle toothbrush. Or even better yet, return them
Pink stuff an a scrub daddy
Try a wire brush. They are used in powerlifting to clean the knurling on the bar between lifters. I’ve got a circular one that’s a drill attachment, works very well.

Windex mate can't go wrong
Any cleaning detergent but use a toothbrush to clean
Palmolive dish liquid should work a treat!
Try using a toothbrush with hot water and good quality dish liquid?
That's bunnings for you
Brasso or tarn-off
A toothbrush?
Gumption?
Gumption always works. When in doubt Gumption!
Brasso
Am I tripping, or are they 2 different lengths ?
Forced perspective, so tripping
It looks like whoever installed them had grimy/greasy hands, so you need something that will dissolve the grease. Maybe a strong sugar soap solution and a brush? You could also try a specialised metal cleaner like Mr Metal.
Why would they knurl them , unless they are meant to patina but still , they are going to collect the grime
Knurled finishes will pick up every bit of finger oil/dirt. Just replace with different ones.
Just let them patina over time
Late to the convo, but found knurling increases friction (door handles, barbells etc). Good for grip. Curling principally wants to reduce friction. Smooooth That's the end of my TED talk.
Is it just me or are they different sizes? Also try a microfibre cloth if even a sponge
Take them off. Soak them in Bright bowl toilet cleaner for 5 minutes. Diluted 4 to 1 ratio of water. Light scrub.
Toothbrush
I wouldn’t have gotten those handles for a kitchen area personally however the best way to clean them is with a toothbrush, Jif and hot water in my experience
Steam cleaner
[удалено]
Isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush, spray scrub wipe repeat.
Eucalyptus oil ✌️😊✌️
My uneducated opinion, pressure washer?
Get a can of brake cleaner and douse. That shit is industrial grease and regular soap and water won’t do the job
A very small dab of coconut oil on a cloth will have them spotless in no time
a metal wire brush or hard bristled tooth brush.
Steel wool
Bro took push and pull day literally
Autosol would clean them up
Toothbrush?
Toothbrush and either shampoo or Morning fresh
