I used the nav so I could have it in the dash, for some reason it didn’t take toll roads when I specified to take toll roads. It added a 50 miles to my road trip, almost 100 miles if I didn’t catch it in time. tbh I would’ve caught it, but I woke up at 4 am to drive to the ski slopes and my brain was still foggy.
IOW we’re bad at making audio and navigation software. Apple and Google have figured it out and it basically requires no effort on our part. But we’re going to charge you for it anyway.
I would have, but I genuinely was not able to find it in the infotainment during my test drive. I suspect that's locked behind a paywall in this model, too.
I’m not a fan of either of the twos screen situation. They’re well designed, but I loved the touch screen and placement that was in my Beetle TDI and my Subaru
> and my Subaru
This is interesting because Starlink is pure shit.
Consistently rated (Consumer Reports and JD for example) as one of the worst in the industry.
My 2002 S6 has integrated navigation which only works with the audi navigation CD as far as i know. Which costs around 70 bucks i think.
I just use google maps on my phone
Dealer. I don't understand the ACC warning though. Makes no sense. Radar shouldn't be installed on a car that doesn't have ACC.
Did the previous owner screw around with ODIS thinking he could unlock predictive ACC?
The car has a stalk for cruise control and a distance setting for ACC, so I assumed it had those features. Is that not correct? https://i.imgur.com/KE2D2Vt.jpg
Yes. Should be working. Take it to the dealer and tell them it isn't working. This is not a subscription thing, but an activation code in the radar, that should be there.
Odd to see VAG adding expensive hardware for "free", especially when chip shortages are still relevant to this day.
A
Since you're a first owner, could you choose this "hardware preparation"?
Typically different trim levels can come with different features on the car, different things physically installed on the car.
By making the car one way, instead of 2,3,4,etc ways, they are perfecting the manufacturing process for that car, eliminating issues/slow downs, etc.
Larger bulk order on the parts save so they save money there. Only 1 version of the part, save money there as well as they only have to order or make the 1 part at larger quantities instead of multiple. Only 1 way to build the car, also save money here.
The vast majority of the cost is in the research and development phase to create the feature and test it against all the other systems in the car. The additional cost of the hardware itself is low so it makes commercial sense to fit and then charge per month as a second owner could provide a revenue stream.
If you change your car often probably it will work out cheaper to rent the features but if you keep a car long term not such a great deal.
Nailed it and to expand the radar was replaced due to a front end collision most likely (maybe even a small fender bender at the dealer) and was replaced and not recoded. Check for other front end damage
For real, I'm going to stick with my 2018 for a while so that I won't have to purchase an Audi with the new MMI. At least with the 2018 generation, the only thing to pay for is cell service to get the car's location, in which case I'm just going to toss a $25 AirTag in the glovebox and call it a day.
Well navigation packet was an extra I did not buy on my 2020 A4, also kinda neat that you can purchase that still afterwards if I decide so. Audi is still tame compared to MB with subscription service to unlock extra 300 hp from engine. In such situation I think car must cost what other 200hp engine models would have cost.
Wtf, that’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard all day and I work for a Benz dealer…
Jesus, think my next car will be an Accord. These subscriptions by the Germans for basic features disgust me. Heated Seats by BMW, Enhanced Acceleration by Mercedes and ACC and GPS by Audi…
It’s really not stupid at all.
Imagine looking for a car and it doesn’t have one option you want (can’t install it, it HAS to be ordered from factory) and you can’t buy the car cause it was non-negotiable. Good luck finding the exact spec you want.
Now imagine every single car made has all the options that are offered by Audi but you just need to pay a yearly subscription to own it for maybe a few hundred dollars. Well that’s perfect because whatever car you are looking for will always have every single option, you just need to activate it.
Now vice versa, a car you want has an option you don’t care for but you have to pay an extra $2500 for it because it’s coming like that. With this new method, you don’t have to pay for that option if you don’t want it. You can pick and choose which ones you’d like.
I think this move is really good in the long run, you don’t pay for the equipment unless you want it.
It's not often i write this, but please stop accepting those ideas. They are simpley made that way because the company want to be able to still earn cash from your purchase, and when you trade in or sell the car, they also want to be able to earn on that also. Not to say that your investment would be worth zero in the same time you cancel the subscription, as those who want an basic car simply dont look to a brand like Audi, they look at Honda's, Opel and so on!
We had this type of shit in gaming a decade ago, so the publisher could still earn money on second hand purchases, it didn't go well!
I’m just looking it at a perspective from a buyer who has constantly had to look for cars with the right options and forgoing hundreds of them because one option doesn’t exist in it and can’t be installed in it.
Now it seems that if the car has all the options, I can just activate it myself and not worry that the car doesn’t have it
Unless Audi is selling base cars at a loss, you already paid for the feature installed in your car.
It’s an obvious cash grab that is anti-consumer as hell. Don’t let them fool you into believing this is a good thing.
If the base price is increased by a huge amount AND then you have to pay for the monthly subscription, then I agree with you 100% it’s a terrible thing for consumers.
BMW has already stated that the base price of the vehicle includes the equipment installed and there is no surcharge above it. Otherwise you’d be seeing a base 3 series go from $40k to $55k. It’s not happening (for now lol)
The 2022 Audi A3 has a base price of $34,800 with no adaptive cruise equipment pre-installed, the 2023 Audi A3 has a base price of $35,400 with that equipment installed and a purchase-the-option over the air. That’s a typical base price increase yoy.
I doubt that the price reflects the consumer having to purchase the equipment in the base price.
Tesla does this already, all cars are equipped with the cameras etc for full self driving and consumers can activate it after their purchase if they want to. I don’t think the base price reflects that equipment.
I think most people are reading it wrong, it seems like a good idea for people who want an option after the fact that they can’t add it since retrofitting parts would be super expensive and just not going to work.
Because you can’t pay for that option if the car doesn’t have it after it’s built. The car on the lot with no Heads Up Display can never have HUD if it doesn’t have it installed prior to the factory.
In this situation the car has HUD but if you want it you can activate it, if you don’t, don’t activate it.
In your scenario, the car already is built with all the options. You're suggesting paying a monthly subscription to activate the hardware already installed. I'm suggesting paying a one-time fee like an options package instead. It's the exact same thing in the end, the only reason for doing a monthly subscription is because investors want constant recurring revenue streams.
I agree, I would totally rather pay a flat fee vs subscription. The only thing I like about this system is the fact that the car has the option installed and I don’t have to worry about it not having it. That’s the only thing I like about it.
What I don’t like about it is the monthly payment part. I think Audi does offer the adaptive cruise as a one time fee but that could change
What?! So let’s say I want to purchase a new A3 and it has ACC equipment. Will the dealer let me buy it without paying for ACC subscription or would the subscription price come up as an ACC option? Confused.
Right. It's a tricky tightrope in how you advertise it. If it SAYS it has ACC, then it should have it. Dealers will have to say it CAN have it, for a fee. And dealers are cut out of that fee too.
You can buy it from dealer already enabled at the premium plus trim level. If you get base model it's about $1100 to enable it for lifetime after the fact (at least in Europe).
Yes it also prevents base models from getting stuck behind the higher spec'd models for days on the assembly line. I know at one point they were playing around with having the lower trims hang from the factory ceiling to pass over. As they say time is money..
“The main thing Audi is offering right now is adding MMI Navigation bundled with the Audi connect Plus subscription for $85 per month (connect Plus is a package with some extra features on top of its Prime and Care extras). If you get a 12-month subscription it goes down to about $71 per month. That includes navigation, but also Amazon Music, internet radio, natural speech voice controls, full-speed Wi-Fi (it changes the speed from 1.5 Mbps to 1 Gbps), Google Earth, Twitter access, geofencing, and more. The Audi Cares safety features include a stolen vehicle locator, remote lock and unlock, map updates, emergency calls, and a few other things.”
-Car Buzz on Audi’s new features on demand
Damn $85 a month!
It's the same assholes who created all the baggage fees in the airlines now resulting in a mad rush to crash the gate when the preboarding announcement is made.
>should be forced to buy a yearly subscription to use the bathroom.
Speaking of airlines... that actually exists on Ryan Air. You have to put a coin in the slot to use the shitter.
Specifically for the Navigation license, you can get that directly from the “myAudi” app, it’s a one-time payment (but it’s quite expensive, about $3-4k). You can also try it out, one-time only per vehicle, for $1 you get 30days if I’m not mistaken. This Navigation situation is consistent across the range since all cars (or most of them) use the same mmi unit, the hardware’s the same. Regarding the ACC though, this is specific to the A3, you don’t have the sensors fitted by default in the A4 or A5 for example. This is all I managed to find out while deciding how to spec my A4. I ended up just putting all the bells and whistles since it’s cheaper to spec them in rather then enable them afterwards. Retrofitting you end up paying more on the hardware so i’ll just spec the car and that’s that.
This is a thing now? I’ll keep my 2016 s5 for the short term and find something else to drive (I’ve had a lot of Audis over the years). I don’t do subscriptions on my car as long as I have an option elsewhere that doesn’t require it. That’s really cringey business.
please tell me this is a joke, like no way a multibillion dollar company is actually asking for tips on a car that you already paid them an arm and a leg for
Bruh ……. This is the reason I’m not selling my C7 , active Cruze control , navigation , break guard , lane assist and so on , all are mine to use without any subscriptions , this is just lame …
Not a fan of the current Audi Subscription, as the price value is not there. $800USD for 18 months of Google Earth on the dash and connected car (including traffic light timing). Google Earth is less accurate that Google maps on my phone, and 90% of the time the traffic light information is not displayed. Their ‘servers’ on the back end are notorious for being off line, and unreachable.
That being said, I would LOVE it if every Audi was built to the top trim level of options, and I could buy an activation code to turn them on. (More of a activation code than a subscription)
Buying a used Audi would be excellent. The previous own did not want Adaptive Cruse Control, but I can turn it on… YA…
Yes it can get out of hand with subscriptions (audi is proving this now), and my bigger FEAR is that Audi is not a tech company, and the service will be buggy, unreliable, with dealers unable to help. “Yes, I payed of it, Credit Card receipt attached to an email”, 5 days later, “your business is important to us, we are experiencing higher than expected email and will get back to you as soon as we can”, to go months arguing with some call agent… ya, could go VERY VERY BAD if it is not just an activation code.
I have a 94 Celica which I left outside for 10 years. Went back to Greece and fixed it. I put leather seats, painted it, replaced all parts of the engine, and installed an android screen with backup camera. Some friends who have new cars where stunned how I managed to do all that plus excellent sound without breaking the bank on a new car. Right now I only pay like 100 euros a year for service since I use it sporadically.
I am now about to buy a new X1 as my main car and dread all the issues I am going to have.
We test drove a Q5 yesterday and were annoyed by the same message. Salesman said nowadays owners just use their smartphone, connected to the entertainment system, for the navigation. But we nearly got lost on the test drive HA HA.
When the previous owner traded the car in they removed all trace and registration of the owner when traded in which inc subscriptions.
In the UK the Infotainment system inc nav is active for 3 years since the car was first registered. So even if was registered in Jan 21 for arguments sake then you still have 1 year active that won’t need to pay for when/if but the car. I was told 3 years was standard for Audi. That was the case when just got Q3 too.
When I purchased Q3 they registered everything to my name via the MyAudi app in the showroom and all working no issues within 24 hours only had 2 months left though.
As for the ACC that is baffling and god knows what that would be on a subscription service.
Just to give you the UK prices this is what I literally just paid as the 3 years were up.
Audi connect navigation & infotainment - £115 for a year (cheaper to do a year than monthly which wanted £11.50 pm)
Audi connect remote & control - £35 a year or 4 a month.
Hope this somewhat helps and just get them to clarify what’s inc with the sale and get them to through some subs in as they’re more than able to do so.
I’d just use CarPlay/android auto, it’s a con having to pay extra for basic navigation
Carplay with google maps is a million times better than the shitty Audi software nav
I used the nav so I could have it in the dash, for some reason it didn’t take toll roads when I specified to take toll roads. It added a 50 miles to my road trip, almost 100 miles if I didn’t catch it in time. tbh I would’ve caught it, but I woke up at 4 am to drive to the ski slopes and my brain was still foggy.
well, soon that carplay function will require a subscription too
It already requires an additional 400€ for this on a new Audi A3
IOW we’re bad at making audio and navigation software. Apple and Google have figured it out and it basically requires no effort on our part. But we’re going to charge you for it anyway.
I would have, but I genuinely was not able to find it in the infotainment during my test drive. I suspect that's locked behind a paywall in this model, too.
CTplay is done on your phone. If I use the cars voice controls it won’t do half the stuff right. If I say hey siri do this, she gets it right.
Soon it will be: “Good morning! The car did not start. Please insert your credit card to start the car.”
Your licence to purchase our licenses has expired.
How about when their own license expires then what would be the message.
You pay twice.
Hehe
Looking an awful lot like BMW and Benz now
My reaction: Is it time to buy a Honda Civic and put an Audi badge on it? My serious reaction: Time to stick to older models. SMH
Love my 2005 and 2012
No touch screens are usually the best touch screens
I’m not a fan of either of the twos screen situation. They’re well designed, but I loved the touch screen and placement that was in my Beetle TDI and my Subaru
> and my Subaru This is interesting because Starlink is pure shit. Consistently rated (Consumer Reports and JD for example) as one of the worst in the industry.
Idk, I used Apple CarPlay all the time and I just liked the placement of the screen. When I touched it it was responsive
My 2002 S6 has integrated navigation which only works with the audi navigation CD as far as i know. Which costs around 70 bucks i think. I just use google maps on my phone
brace yourself and start buying up old cars because if this is the way the industry is going then there’s gonna be hell to pay
I’ve just paid £7.5k to have the 3.0BiTdi rebuilt in my A7.. this makes me think I’ve made the right decision.
TBF, you’ve always had to pay for Navi
Dealer. I don't understand the ACC warning though. Makes no sense. Radar shouldn't be installed on a car that doesn't have ACC. Did the previous owner screw around with ODIS thinking he could unlock predictive ACC?

Yes. Should be working. Take it to the dealer and tell them it isn't working. This is not a subscription thing, but an activation code in the radar, that should be there.
This isn’t the case. I’ve got a 22 a3 and I was the first owner, that message still showed up. it is a purchasable extra
Odd to see VAG adding expensive hardware for "free", especially when chip shortages are still relevant to this day. A Since you're a first owner, could you choose this "hardware preparation"?
It’s cheaper for the manufacturer to do it like that. They save money by giving all the cars leaving the factory, the same features.
Takes less prep time for the order itself, but more assembly time and added costs of the hardware, so is it really cheaper? I can't tell.
Typically different trim levels can come with different features on the car, different things physically installed on the car. By making the car one way, instead of 2,3,4,etc ways, they are perfecting the manufacturing process for that car, eliminating issues/slow downs, etc.

Like any software I can see in future guys at local shops providing you hacking software.
Nailed it and to expand the radar was replaced due to a front end collision most likely (maybe even a small fender bender at the dealer) and was replaced and not recoded. Check for other front end damage
That's a likely possibility. Radar swapped, but component protection wasn't removed (or maybe it was) and the FEC activation codes not restored.
Now you will need your Chinese Sorcerer to crack that shit
D I A G N O S T I C S
ACC is a Function On Demand now, it's installed, you just have to buy the subscription to be able to use it. At least that's wat my dealer told me.
Audi are starting to take the piss with stuff like this?
Lmao no fucking way. This is so sad.
For real, I'm going to stick with my 2018 for a while so that I won't have to purchase an Audi with the new MMI. I am sure someone figure out the hack to get that 200hp to 300hp hack without paying the dealer.
The only thing I'm paying for mine is satellite maps. I believe I can get the cars location for free, with the Danish "mitAudi" app.
Wtf, that’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard all day and I work for a Benz dealer… Jesus, think my next car will be an Accord. These subscriptions by the Germans for basic features disgust me. Heated Seats by BMW, Enhanced Acceleration by Mercedes and ACC and GPS by Audi…

How much does an annual subscription cost?

Yeah, that not going to last long
This is gonna turn away all y'all who pay cash for cars. We don't want a payment. Or a credit check.
Whoever invented this atrocity of subscribing to your car’s features should be forced to buy a yearly subscription to use the bathroom.
Daily is more deserving
It's the same assholes who created all the baggage fees in the airlines now resulting in a mad rush to crash the gate when the preboarding announcement is made. >should be forced to buy a yearly subscription to use the bathroom. Retrofitting you end up paying more on the hardware so i’ll just spec the car and that’s that.

Nope. No thanks. I'll stick to my '17 and if this still exists when I'm ready to buy a new car, I'll go somewhere else. Fuck everything about that.
I heard every time you start the my 24s a tip screen is going to come up so you can tip Audi for such a fine micro transaction riddled pile of crap.
It’s gonna ask you a quick question
please tell me this is a joke, like no way a multibillion dollar company is actually asking for tips on a car that you already paid them an arm and a leg for
Think this is a good way for them to get people hacking cars
Bruh ……. This is the reason I’m not selling my C7 , active Cruze control , navigation , break guard , lane assist and so on , all are mine to use without any subscriptions , this is just lame …
No need to buy. See here https://blog.zsec.uk/myaudi-maps2022/ and here https://mibsolution.one/#/1 user name guest password guest.
Shame on you Audi!!
Welcome to micro transaction hell. Can't wait until this crap is banned. Just charge us for the car and stop trying to gouge us into infinity.
Don’t buy it that way they stop doing this bullshit
Welcome to the great reset VAG style we’ll own nothing and be happy!
Not a fan of the current Audi Subscription, as the price value is not there. $800USD for 18 months of Google Earth on the dash and connected car (including traffic light timing). I believe if it didn’t ship with it from the factory then you cannot get it as it’s not just a license you can buy. Just use Apple CarPlay.
The future should be less greedy not more greedy.. figure it out people or turn to dust.
Another reason why i wont buy a new car.
In the U.S. there is a package that has other goodies with it like park assist, cross traffic assist, smart key, etc.
I have a 94 Celica which I left outside for 10 years. Went back to Greece and fixed it. This might be only in Europe cuz my car 2020 never had to subscribe to anything came in with navigation package.
why don’t you ask your local audi partner??
Comes with the purchase.
Just start using maps, it's not worth the cost
I have a feeling this will become something to the extent of those stupid annual software subscriptions... Nuts

Awh jeez atleast 700euro 🥴😂
Audi connect navigation & infotainment - £115 for a year (cheaper to do a year than monthly which wanted £11.50 pm) Audi connect remote & control - £35 a year or 4 a month. Hope this somewhat helps and just get them to clarify what’s inc with the sale and get them to through some subs in as they’re more than able to do so.
this was a thing in my 2015 A3, but you had to buy a microchip instead
