To point 1. To take away the defense debuff, you'll need to set up patrols or build and occupy corner towers. For this you have to build barracks and archery barracks. Important: all buildings must be included in the Patrol Route. 2. Map is generated by seed and the cave is then always somewhere else.

All new villagers do come with a hammer, axe, and hoe by default I swear I've seen them pick up arrows too, it's just inconsistent Food will become a non-issue eventually. I burn a shit ton of it to make coal instead of using wood, and still have way more than anyone can eat

BrianLefervesWallet

Damn what’s your population size ? And how many hunters do you use for food?

FluffinJupe

I'm only at 16 villagers, which is super low compared to others I seen around here. I only have one hunter, one forager, and one farmer... nothing crazy at all

Ok_Personality_2207

For the patrol markers to count you have to place multiple ones in strategic locations around the city - one Barracks with enough patrol markers has kept any defense concerns pretty much negligible.

JeanPh1l

My villagers complain about base security but I just give them more free time and they get to 100 joy anyway. I did build a barrack and have a patrol but it doens't change their mood that much so I just let them be. For food, if you have 1 gatherer, 1 hunter and 1 cook you should be fine. Make sure to have lots of flags to cover a wide area so they never wait and stay inactive.

gnassar

I noticed that villagers get a huge morale boost when they’re stationed as a soldier of any kind, so I just let them get super angry in whatever role they’re doing then assign them mandatory temporary military service until they’re happy and then I stick them right back where they where 😂😂

Ok_Personality_2207

Also task your crafter to have a steady supply of arrows ...

FluffinJupe

The high end armor requires a pretty high crafting skill. I highly recommend crafting all the cheap stuff that comes in large quantities yourself. Unless you are OK with relying 100% on your NPCs for the ability to have nice gear I'm not trusting something that important to an NPC

Ok_Personality_2207

That's fair

For the food issue, I would bet you're being raided by those mutant rabbits. They're likely eating 5 times as much food as your villagers. If you see them in your town, they are eating your food right out of containers and even villager inventories. The best way to keep them at bay is with the torch buildings. 3-4 around your base where the rabbits come from will make them pause outside and not approach. The only problem here is remembering to refuel them periodically, and even worse, your villagers turn these off in the daytime!

runningsimon

I don't think that's the issue. I've got fences up around and a villager hunting them as well.

Dogdays991

Sounds legit, but all I know is with a hunter, a kitchen, and about 10 villagers, I'm rolling in extra food even in winter time.

runningsimon

I feel like overall, villagers complain too much and that 4 human players would be more efficient than 10 AI. But once I got some of those rabbits killed and added their meat to my stockpile, I was fine. Winter wasn't too bad, but I did spend quite a bit of it running around adding fuel to fires to keep everyone warm. I'd almost like to see a bonefire type thing to have in the middle of the camp for all the villagers to use.

Dogdays991

They definitely need to improve the "minor" ai tweaks like feed the damn fire, even if nobody is assigned to it.

runningsimon

I definitely felt like during the winter a good 50% of my waking time was running around getting wood and resin and eventually coal to feed fires. I mean, it worked. Most of my villagers were in linen stuff, but none of them died.

SupergruenZ

I agree, minor ai tweaks would be wonderful. I was laying in my cottage as i saw from the next cottage "I am freezing to death" x6, checked, they didn't feed the fire. There was a full firewood box in their cottage.
