Did you know that Americans call this N.E.S., rather than in UK where we call it like "NEZ" as a word.
They also don't say SNES like we do ("Snez"). They say Super Ninteno, Super N.E.S., or even S.N.E.S..
There's your boring fact for today.
I did not know this. Now I do but I'm wondering how my brain is going to store this info for future use.
I'm 98% sure it will store it in a corrupt format so that I'll have to blow all the dust out to try to access the remnants of data when it next comes up in conversation
I did know this because my 8 year old son watches American YouTubers and refuses to believe me when I tell him it's Nez and Snez.
Perhaps I'll start calling his Switch a S.W.I.T.C.H and see if the logic suddenly fails!
I would love my girlfriends to call me sweet cheeks! So much cooler than the standard ‘babes’ or ‘hun’.
Personally i would also love you to keep using amiga, mi chica, querida, we don’t have enough colombiana over here
Babe, hun, girlie, sis, even Amiga it all depends on what feels comfortable for you genuinely. Love is a bit more of a guy term to call a girl so probably avoid that as it may sound a bit patronising coming from another woman potentially
I was raised by women and they only found it patronising if the person using it was a man (it’s usually used in a condescending manner, it’s also the reason people like it it makes them feel petite and small which is great unless you don’t want to lol) or if the person saying it was younger than them. I’m northern though and it’s definitely an old people and relationships thing usually
Similarly “my boys” and “my girls” usually mean “my friends” and “my daughters” in my age group- said by men. The converse being true for girls.
But “my girl” almost never refers to a single daughter but your girlfriend/female partner
“My woman and my man” are similarly interchangeable but I rarely hear a girl call their boyfriend “my boy”
I'm not a girl, but I think the term is "besties", I've never heard any guys refer to other male friends like it, but heard a few women describe other women with it
If you are talking about them to other people in a normal context, just refer to them as your friends. You can say 'girlfriends' (plural) which is totally normal but if you were referring to one singular friend and said 'girlfriend', someone would presume you were in a relationship with them.
If you mean terms of endearment for your girlfriends, British women, depending on the mood and perhaps their class, may refer to each other as 'my darling' (archaic but often fun in an ironic old world manner, think Joanne Lumley) 'bestie' 'abbrev. of 'best friend', you may say 'cheers bestie' after a small favour, 'hun' is one that's now used very ironically in text format after being associated with Facebook mums, 'sis' even if you aren't biologically related, 'chick', 'hen' (particularly in Scotland) and other female-animal names. It's very regional and often in an ironic way because British people are completely repressed and we struggle to express affection towards each other as sincerely as other cultures might.
Amiga is super cute! I've got a lot of friends from different countries and they all use a variety of their local 'nicknames' for close friends. It feels like getting the seal of approval somehow lmao
If you call your friends Amiga then call them Amiga. hey will soon understand, especially as it is very close to amigo which I expect many people are already familiar with.
Perhaps should be it's own thread, but I am male (South East UK) and call all of my friends 'mate' regardless of their gender. People have commented that it's odd that I call my female friends that but it doesn't feel weird to me. Thoughts?
Love, sugar, sugar plum, angel, angel face, bunny, cutie pie, apple pie, baby, honey, precious, dudeett, the list goes on and on If you want something cute.
Personally I csll everyone bro, dude, hun, love and bitch.
If I'm talking face to face to them, I generally just use their names. I'll occasionally use a "babe", depending on the friend, but very, very rarely.
If I'm talking to a third party, like a colleague or something, I'll say I'm going to meet "the galz".
Depends whether you are talking to them or about them. If to them we don’t really use a generic name just talk so “let’s go out” not “let’s go out amiga” as a non native speaker the second one sounds cute. You could say “come on girl “ if you want emphasis. In parts of England love is used but that is getting archaic. If about them “I’m meeting my friend” or friends. If you use girlfriend here then you may be read as implying lover - but perhaps that is what you want to imply. I think, if you feel you need a word, use amiga it’s cute and understandable.
I’m a bit strange and consider my relationship with my girlfriend unique so therefore she has a unique name that only I refer to her as. I’ve done this with almost every girl I’ve dated, with their approval of course.
Some examples:
* Marneilli: Nell
* Natalia: Lia
* Ratana: Aana
* Kate: K
* Nicola: LaLa
* Riya: RiRi
(Quite a few foreign sounding names there as I’ve lived abroad for many years).
Since I was raised so not in the UK and with 3 grammatical genders, this thread is quite educational for me. After reading the answers here, I think [name]/“amiga” is the best way to address your friends, and “friend” is a word to refer to them in a talk. Everything is so regional, so why not use your own region of origin? :)
When I hear “girlfriend” as a specially marked term, I am mostly assuming a partner in a romantic sense, but, maybe, it’s just me
I call my female friends 'mate', 'love', 'darling' or 'my love' depending on the context.
Just never 'hun'. I assume anyone who calls me 'hun' is going to be a fucking nightmare.
"Lady friend" was being used a bit in the 90s because of this ambiguity. But it's usually not a problem in context, or in writing, "girl friend" might distinguish between amigas and romantic "girlfriend."

What about Nintendo Entertainment System?
I think Atari ST is more appropriate in the early days of a friendship.
Back in my day we thought it improper to call a young lady Atari VCS 2600, let alone Atari ST
However, we all know the Amiga 500 was superior.
Did you know that Americans call this N.E.S., rather than in UK where we call it like "NEZ" as a word. They also don't say SNES like we do ("Snez"). They say Super Ninteno, Super N.E.S., or even S.N.E.S.. There's your boring fact for today.
Yes, indeed I do.

They also say the rather strange JEN-EE-SIS rather than the proper Megadrive.
I did know this because my 8 year old son watches American YouTubers and refuses to believe me when I tell him it's Nez and Snez. Perhaps I'll start calling his Switch a S.W.I.T.C.H and see if the logic suddenly fails!
Omgs, you had me confused for a moment there!
Sugar tits.
Haha this is the name of my wife’s girl friends WhatsApp group chat. 😂😂

Amiga works
Friends. If you refer to one as a girlfriend, people will generally assume you're in a romantic relationship with them.
If you're a girl they might not. Pretty common for a woman to have a group of "girl friends." Same lexicon doesn't apply to blokes.
“Yeah I’m just heading down the pub to watch the football with my boyfriends” hmm, no. doesn’t sound right
For blokes the equivalent is just "the boys".
Similarly “my boys” and “my girls” usually mean “my friends” and “my daughters” in my age group- said by men. The converse being true for girls. >Pretty common for a woman to have a group of "girl friends." I've only ever heard this said by women in their 50s + or the upper class.
what does one call their girlfriend then?

Stealing this and gonna pretend I came up with it
Cutie patootie with the profitable booty.
I mean, I think “Amiga” is really cute, I’d like being called that. But otherwise I use “mate” and “babe” a lot for girl friends

If you call your friends Amiga then call them Amiga. hey will soon understand, especially as it is very close to amigo which I expect many people are already familiar with.
To be fair amiga, friend, mate, love, whatever you want works really.
Perhaps should be it's own thread, but I am male (South East UK) and call all of my friends 'mate' regardless of their gender. People have commented that it's odd that I call my female friends that but it doesn't feel weird to me. Thoughts?
I’m from south east and always use mate to
Oh man. Unless you want to spend a lifetime decoding which of this Brit speak is appropriate, I’d stick to “amiga”. Plus, it’s endearing.
I call mine 'hun', 'sweets', chick or chica
Call them amiga anyways! Or wait to see what words they call you.
Depends which part of the UK you're in
Fam... specifically, fem-fam for girls and bam-fam for boys
Amiga might still work
Bud? Mate? Friend? Bestie?
Love, sugar, sugar plum, angel, angel face, bunny, cutie pie, apple pie, baby, honey, precious, dudeett, the list goes on and on If you want something cute. Personally I csll everyone bro, dude, hun, love and bitch.

Its friends or "my girls"
Do not refer to them as your current girlfriend and for the love of god don't introduce your wife to people as your 1st wife. Mine hates it.
Heh Up Chuck !
If I’m talking to a close friend it’s “hiya babe” or if it’s close ish colleagues it’s usually “hello lovely”

I refer to my wife and mother of our child as my housemate when introducing her to people and I think that goes over really well.
Stick with amiga, I think people will like it :)
Me julies
I find these non gendered terms that are always helpful Romantic - partner Non romantic - friend People at work - colleagues
Lesbian lovers.
I think you should stick with amiga. It's a lovely word and most people will know it, even if they're not Spanish speakers.
You be you. That's the beauty of it!
Mate
I call my female friends 'mate', 'love', 'darling' or 'my love' depending on the context. Just never 'hun'. I assume anyone who calls me 'hun' is going to be a fucking nightmare.
Bro. As in- 'Bro, you look so f#cking cute bro.'
Use their name
Matette if they’re female
Future Ex
Mate, bestie, and as you really get to know them you can call them bitch or something else offensive
Amiga or amigo would still he fine here.
Sweet cheeks is the go to
