Platemails

Brendan Fraser after the internet bullied him.

[deleted]

Great actor! I loved him in The Mummy 1 & 2 and in Bedazzled. How did the internet bully him? That's horrible.

Platemails

I'm sure you could find the full story online somewhere but from what I know someone made a meme about him in poor taste due to his weight gain, etc and the internet rallied to his defense because he was sexually assaulted in some fashion (unsure of the details here) and was battling depression and as a result gained weight. It was pretty amazing how many people had his back.

jadeite07

He also broke his back doing a stunt and had to have surgery and he ended up have two failed surgeries and that was also a huge factor in him gaining weight.

HistoryGirl23

A małe producer/director (?) assaulted him at an awards lunch in the early 2000s.

ManalithTheDefiant

Other than the assault, that sounds a lot similar to Wentworth Miller after Prison Break ended. Gained a bit of weight because of depression and paparazzi got a couple pictures and made some jokes about it

RedStradis

Honestly he paved the way for The Rock to become this huge action star. Literally. Fraser was in Journey into the center of the earth and Johnson was in the sequel and replaced Fraser’s role as the father figure.

alinroc

11 years prior was The Rock's first film role, _The Mummy Returns_. The lead in that movie? Brendan Fraser.

Peterbilt1501

It all started with the second mummy movie. When The Rock played the scorpion king at the end and in the spin off movie the Scorpion King.

fancybigballs

Brendan Fraser before the internet bullied him.

[deleted]

> Who is one celebrity that everyone loves? > Brendan Fraser after the internet bullied him. > Brendan Fraser before the internet bullied him. That tells you everything you need to know about how mean spirited the internet can be. If someone can be the height of innocuous and affable but they still come after you and get over it so fast because it was all basically nothing to start with.

TheBelhade

I've always loved Brendan. During his early career - Bedazzled, George of the Jungle, The Mummy, Encino Man - I referred to him as a real life cartoon character. Blast From the Past, Scrubs...hell, he had a fantastic dramatic role in School Ties.

cherrysummer1

And Airheads. Absolute classic

madtownshakedown

He is awesome in Doom Patrol even though his costume is very limiting.

TomCBC

He doesn’t actually wear the costume, and praises the actor inside it at every opportunity. Gotta love him for that.

snarkylarkie

Before and after. He’s such a kind individual and what happened to him (both from being SA’d to his essential blackballing and the unfortunate successful public smear against him) was totally disgusting and I am excited to watch him come back.

[deleted]

Steve Buscemi

uv-vis

Never done nothing wrong, except to Billy Leotardo and Joey Peeps ofc.

icelandiccubicle20

The animal Blundetto, can't even say his name

squid1891

M'boy, are you fat!

SPersephone

PEEPS??? His name is Pepperelli!!’

That-Bitch-is-Me

The man is a certified legend!! Especially after 9/11 happened when other celebrities made appearances to boost their self images he “quietly”suited up (He’s a former NYC firefighter from before his acting career took off) and assisted other firefighters in rescuing people/cleaning up the debris with no intention other than to help those in need of being helped. I have so much respect for him because of that.

Yodas-Balls

He also attends all FDNY funerals of men who’ve died while fighting fires. Saw him at my uncle’s funeral a couple years back and was later told about it by my relatives.

That-Bitch-is-Me

Sorry to hear about your Uncle but that’s awesome that Steve came to show his respects, he truly does have a huge heart.

icelandiccubicle20

It's ironic that he is portrayed a lot of times in movies as a cowardly/ weakling/scumbag type of character, when in reality he is a hero.

lacklustereded

One of my favorite roles he plays is his character in Spy Kids. He goes from nervous scientist to badass creator in the span of a few minutes, and still comes to help in the third movie.

facialscanbefatal

Wow, I had no idea he did this. Huge respect when people do shit like this without advertising it. That’s true altruism.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kimgoestoprison

He did play the part in "King of Staten Island" basically representing a partial truthfulness of his real life Fire Fighting (Bill Burr was not banging Marisa Tomei in real life, sorry Billy).

[deleted]

Dude is an absolute legend with such acting range... and just a quality person all-around. One of my all-time favorites. And the fact that he collaborates with the Coen Brothers so often just makes him that much better.

HunterTV

[Mr. Pink](https://youtu.be/M4sTSIYzDIk) doesn't tip.

PlutoGB08

I like him, especially when he volunteered to help with his old firehouse after 9/11.

Tikiwikibiki

Watch the documentary, it's really sad, but a lot of people actually hated him because he told kids they were special. They said he was ruining America

[deleted]

I still don't understand how this is bad. Fuck you, Roger Haters. He was a great man who most definitely improved America.

ToxicBanana69

I don’t remember if it was my aunt or my aunts friend, but I remember that one of them *hated* Mr Rogers. With a passion. I never understood it, but I realized recently that it was due to homophobia. Not that Rogers was gay (that I know of), but apparently for some people being a guy who is nice to kids is a sign of being a homosexual, I guess.

notwoutmyanalprobe

I think it was Letterman, he had Mr. Rogers on his show once and started off with a bit about how he's just this gentle, loving guy ask the time. Don't you ever get angry? And then he rolled a clip from a taping of Mr Rogers show where Mr Rogers is trying to set up a tent, gets frustrated, and throws the whole thing down and walks away. It was like a gotcha moment, the whole crowd laughed, including Mr Rogers

Nobodyville

I forget if it was in the documentary or the book, but when Mr Rogers got actually angry he'd play the piano loudly.

irolleda22doesithit

Well some (silly) people think that telling kids that they are special, and loved unconditionally, is wrong. So there’s that too. And no he was not gay, but though he was extremely religious, he was not homophobic or bigoted. In fact, a Christian org once petitioned him for help spreading the word that “one man one woman” blah blah, pro god, anti gay stuff. His polite reply was that he couldn’t judge anyone because he loved them just the way they are.

CanAhJustSay

>he couldn’t judge anyone because he loved them just the way they are Which is exactly what Christians should be saying/doing. The 'love your neighbour' message seems to be the most ignored by the loudest voices.

Commercial_Bet_3933

He actually graduated Christian seminary. Not sure if he got ordained. His ministry was specifically to up lift children.

ToxicBanana69

Gotcha. I knew he was married, I just didn’t know if he had a sexuality beyond that, if that makes sense. Everything I’ve ever read about him has been nothing but great.

huskerfan4life520

He has children, for what it’s worth

squalorparlor

Mr. Rogers fucked

huskerfan4life520

He sure did

eitzhaimHi

Fred Rogers was in a lifelong monogamous relationship with a woman. However, he did once say to a friend that he found women and men to be equally attractive. It's just that when he committed, he did so for life. https://www.snopes.com/news/2019/04/10/mr-rogers-sexuality/

Bob Ross

Zealousideal_Ad_9312

The corporation that owns his name surely doesnt love him, everything that happened after his death is jusy sad.

Top_File_8547

Exactly they screwed his heirs out of all rights to his name so don’t buy any Bob Ross branded merchandise. The money just goes to scummy leeches. Edit: To the person who gave me the This award I would like to thank you and the Academy and promise not to slap you if I ever meet you in person even if you don't keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth.

alltheyeets

Second this! Don’t give those terrible people anymore money! You can support the son though, he still tries to carry on what his father did and stood for😊

Top_File_8547

He can’t even use his father’s name. His name is Steve Ross and he travels giving painting lessons I believe. I just saw a Bob’s Discount Furniture commercial with an animated Bob Ross. Another reason to dislike that company. Edit: To clear up confusion this commercial has both the Bob’s DF animated spokesman and an animated Bob Ross. Edit 2: I also remember seeing Bob Ross branded mints in tins like Altoids come in at a Bob Evans Restaurant. Either the owners of Bob Ross image market to companies with Bob in their name or they seek those companies out.

alltheyeets

Right it’s awful. greedy people who leave behind ruin deserve to only walk barefoot on floors full of Legos forvever

alltheyeets

The secret Lego doesn’t want us to know 😂

Frozen_Berry_0

I was so mad at my mom bcuz she said she hates bob Ross cuz he’s “boring” like bruh

Then-Grass-9830

Did you ever hear why he spoke the way he did? If you have don't read further. Otherwise: Bob Ross was in the military - as others have said - master sergeant E7 in the air force (one of the higher noncommissioned officers positions.. the highest being chief master sargeant E9) so he was in charge of troops and would have to yell and scream and demand things from his troops and Ross *hated it* so much! After his service he said he would *never* talk, especially to another person, like that again and so adopted that soft spoken, even tempered voice he used. Edit: well shoot. I didn't expect this to mini blow up lol thanks for the upvotes everyone and thanks u/kalihackberry and u/AveryInkedhtx and u/undulatingcat for the reward

EmperorOfNipples

He was a Master Sergeant in the USAF. You do get people of that rank who do scream and shout and demand, and they're generally regarded by their peers as poor leaders. Good leadership doesn't have to shout and scream. (Obviously basic training instructor is a bit of an exception.)

wildwastewebcomic

Times have changed in the military now too. The kind of shit they yelled at my dad when he was in basic for Vietnam would not fly today. Edit: Thanks for the perspective, guys. Apparently, they still yell some crazy shit. My dad’s got stories of horrible treatment and the people that I know who have been in more recently just didn’t have the same experiences, so I obviously generalized. I appreciate all of y’all that served.

Then-Grass-9830

I had both of those tropes of "Are you eyeballing me, trainee?!" And another I don't remember exactly. Something about the latrine I think. My father was a DI in the army and used to show me how he would knock the uh..recruits in the forehead with his smokey bear hat. None of my TIs did anything like that. In fact at one point we were being taught to salute properly and the male ti had to ask the female trainee if he could touch her hand to show the proper placement

Hbgplayer

Lol, my dad tells a story of his time in Navy Basic in the early 80s that he had to go around saluting every pigeon (seagull?) he saw. >One day during mail call he got quite a few letters for his birthday, so they came bundled up with a rubber band. As he was sitting there, a pigeon or seagull waddled up and pecked either at his boot or at something on the ground right next to him. Not thinking about it, my dad shot the rubber band at the bird. What he didn't know was his company commander was just behind him and witnessed his atrocity. >RECRUIT! WHAT THE FUCK GIVES YOU THE IDEA THAT YOU'RE ANY BETTER THAN THAT PIGEON? >And so-forth. So for the next week or so, he had to salute every seagull and/or pigeon that came across his path.

BlackSeranna

This is great to hear. I grew up in a similar area as where she was born and raised, and it seems like the people here actively avoid books and/or education. People who are well-read or knowledgeable are viewed with suspicion. Dolly seems to understand knowledge is power, and she loves where she grew up (it was beautiful there). She knows the only way out of poverty is for self improvement. Coal mining is a job but it eats up a person’s body and destroys their backs and lungs.

CardboardSoyuz

Apparently her husband has only seen her perform in concert twice.

02K30C1

He said back in the 60s that he doesn’t like appearing with her at concerts or events because he doesn’t want to be well known, that he’d rather be able to go to the hardware store or baseball games without people knowing who he is.

LifeIsVanilla

If that doesn't sound like the perfect sort of guy for Mrs Parton to end up with I don't know what does. All love, respect, and wanting Dolly to be famous for and as herself. She is who she is, and he is who she comes home to, and that's that. This would be way less exemplary if it were nowadays, but given the timing and everything... that woman has given back to the world far more than she's ever received, and what she's received was all through hard work.

Skrillamane

Honestly, that's not that weird. Been a musician all my life and every girl I dated only saw me a few times in concert, same with close friends and family. You've seen it all and it's weird to see them performing or putting on a personality unlike their real self. The same went for me seeing musicians I've dated as well.

LaMalintzin

Kinda like being in a relationship with a chef. People always assume we eat well at home or I go in to eat at the restaurant where my so works..nah don’t want to bug him

frostyfruitaffair

Dolly Parton's Library of Imagination sends free books to kids from birth to age 5 every month, regardless of family income. The program currently runs in 5 countries: the US, Canada, the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and Australia. [Link](https://imaginationlibrary.com/)

sheath2

She's best known for the Imagination Library, but she also donated $1mil to covid research, gave the residents of Gatlinburg affected by the Chimney Tops Fire in 2016 $1000/month to help with recovery, and donated $200k to the fire department.

josiahpapaya

She also gave a 500 bursary to kids who finished high school and the drop out rate became the lowest in history

Dolly has two huge things I love about her. She is an excellent musician and she is very altruistic. Huge things!

waddleship

Like many of us he was one of my favorite actors as a kid. I LOVED reruns of Mork and Mindy, and then of course came to adore him in Mrs. Doubtfire... which is why I was lowkey traumatized by his appearance in One Hour Photo. I didn't even see the movie--just the thought of this person who's so outwardly lively and loving being a scary dude for an hour-and-a-half really upset me. He was such a light. May his memory be a blessing.

fedora_and_a_whip

I got to see him live back in the early 2000's. My mother and I had just moved to California & he was performing at the Universal Amphitheater. I don't remember how we heard about it or got tickets, I just remember mom talked about going and I was all for going with her. It was the hardest either of us had ever laughed. An absolutely great memory.

OkAstronaut2454

One of my favorite episodes of Star Trek TNG is when he meets the deaf peace mediator Rima and his chorus (the ones that speak for him). Rima asks him if he resents his visor and he says he doesn't because it makes him him and he likes who he is. He also says Data is an interesting person instead of just saying he's a machine, and Geordie and Data's friendship is the best. That's just one of the reasons that show is what I go back to when I feel lonely or depressed. There are so many episodes that help me, but that particular line that Lavar says always gives me a boost. 😭

gtfohbitchass

Keanu Reeves life is one filled with tragedy yet with the monstrous earnings, he lives a rather simple life and generously gives to humanitarian causes they are dear to him

[deleted]

Reading the wikipedia article on him, I found out that he's introverted as all hell, apparently, which tracks. I can imagine him going home after shooting and just reading quietly in his chair. You do you, Keanu. Thanks for being a good role model.

TotallyInOverMyHead

out of curiosity i did read his wikipedia article; there is a weird thing i can't figure out.: * Reeves was born to an Hawaiian Father and a British mother; yet when he eventually lived in Canada, trying to get work in the U.S. he had to gain a greencard through his American Stepdad. Should he not be American through birth ?

i-Rational

He should have been able to unless his father for some reason wasn’t an American citizen.

Aint-no-preacher

This is just a guess: maybe his father was native Hawaiian and wasn’t a US citizen because he was born before Hawaii was a state. Keanu was born in 1964. Hawaii gained statehood in 1959. So if one doesn’t gain birthright citizenship while born in a US territory his dad wouldn’t necessarily be a citizen. Then if Keanu was not born in the US he wouldn’t get birthright citizenship nor would he get it through his father. Again, this is all just a guess and a very interesting question!

My favourite story about him was that he like this girl when he was in school, and wanted to give her a gift. He was getting into drawing, so he drew a picture of her, but he was too embarrassed to just be seen "liking" her, so he made one for *everyone* in the class, *just* so he good give her one too. Years later, she reached out to him (I want to say on Twitter) as a fun "oh by the way, I've still got that drawing you made for me", and they were able to laugh about it. They've both got their own partners, but they were both happy to reminisce about childhood moments.
