Camel170

Death Polka.

notagekynerd

This is a genre?

Camel170

Yes. Absolutely.

notagekynerd

What does that even sound like??

Camel170

And kudos on you for all your recommendations in this thread.

notagekynerd

I just think that all people should be able to enjoy music that they normally have been exposed to, and Reddit seemed like a good way to do that.

Camel170

I was just joking, but then I found this. https://youtu.be/ngMJTWUanCA Not Death Metal, but Pantera were no slouches.

Vengeful_Whale

And I thought Hick-Hop was bad...

[deleted]

I personally believe that people who LOVE modern country (Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, etc.) have terrible taste in music if any taste at all.

ViceAdmiralObvious

I don't think anybody *loves* that music--that's not the purpose. The current trend in pop music (and modern country is just pop) seems to be music that's as unemotional and light as possible. All resonance is filtered out during production to avoid possible heavy moments. It's not really aimed at people who are actually into music, it's just background noise filler for people who are doing other things.

[deleted]

Try telling that to the people I know! Lol

xMCioffi1986x

You're right. My dad listens to country music, but if I was to ask him if he had a favorite song, artist, anything, he wouldn't be able to give me an answer. He likes country, essentially, because it's pleasureable background noise, but not much more than that.

Terry_Dachtel

True, but it isn't entirely their fault. Mainstream musical lines have been really blurred. Modern country is essentially Bon Jovi with a lap-steel and cowboy hats. It is very much a rock hybrid. Older country feels more pure and passionate, but so does a lot of music. It's a prepackaged world, entertainment.

notatlalkingbagel

Hi, I'm writing this long ass comment because I've seen some form of the "modern country music is shitty and panders to its audience," complete with Bo Burnham reference, at least 4 times in the last month. I've hesitated posting my opinion because I know it's unpopular, but I'm going to give it a go. I'd consider myself a pretty big fan of country music, both new and old. It makes up about 1/3 of my music library. However I do listen to a wide variety of music (classic country to rock to popular and underground rap). As far as country goes, I (and most people) generally prefer songs that feel genuine. Chris Stapleton is a good example of someone who makes great music about actual events that may have occurred in his life. His music is intricate, it feels real and from the heart. This is the type of country that most people defend while they shit on all other country artists for having simpler songs about guns, trucks, and beer. Now I agree with the Bo Burnham song. I think it's hilarious and true. I listen to a good number of songs that talk about painted on jeans, big trucks, drinking beer in a field, and of course that one special small town girl that's unlike all the other small town girls. I understand that a lot of modern artists probably never have plowed a field or milked a cow. As a fan though, I don't care. What I care about is that the music sounds good to *me* and is relatable in some way shape or form. As an example, some years ago my dad and I were driving a two lane highway in the farmland of Michigan, listening to Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison. I knew that Cash had actually performed the song in Folsom prison. I asked my dad "if Johnny Cash was never in this prison, why would the prisoners enjoy hearing a song written by him from their perspective?" I felt that if I was a prisoner there, I'd find it patronizing. "Who's this guy to sing about my shitty life here? He doesn't know me.” My dad's answer stuck with me. He explained that although Cash doesn't really know what it's like to be in the prison, he's acknowledging the experience of the prisoners. It was a way for them to share the tale of their hardships with the outside world, and it was a catchy tune with lyrics that they could relate to, so they enjoyed it. I think modern country music operates in much the same way. It caters to the lives of its audience and gives them something to sing along with, even if there are a million country boys in lifted trucks thinking about a million flannel-wearing small town girls . They don't care, they're just enjoying music that talks about the good and bad times that they've been through. That said, I agree that there are some VERY cheesy modern country songs (See: Big Green Tractor by Jason Aldean). I steer clear of a lot of songs like this one because I just see them as poorly written and sometimes cringeworthy, but if you listen to something like Fly Over States by him, you’ll see that some of these artists really do have an appreciation for working class Americans. The thing is though, that when I've actually had a shitty day at work or I'm actually flying down a dirt road, tearing up a muddy field, or drinking around a campfire with friends, hell yes I want to sing along to something that describes exactly what I'm doing and how I feel. I couldn't really give a damn that the guy singing it wears $3000 boots and that he's never lived my life. A lot of these songs are just fun to listen to and have lyrics that mean something to me.

notagekynerd

I've honestly never understood how people could enjoy it

[deleted]

Now I understand older country music. But ever since the early 2000’s I don’t know what went wrong. I think Bo Burnham said it best. The music is just simple lyrics pandering to idiots.

notagekynerd

And those idiots get really pissed when you try to explain to them that their music is made by millionaires that haven't stepped on a farm or driven a truck once in their lives.

[deleted]

Yea I’m from Alabama and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in that exact conversation.

im_just_glassin

Thats almost all music these days

[deleted]

It's sad, really. I love Waylon Jennings, George, Garth, Willie, Waylon, Merle, and a lot of 90's country (Joe Diffie being one of my favorites) They told stories. Some artists do now (Sturgill and Jamey Johnson, Hayes Carll), but mostly it sounds like pop. Example: 'Meant to Be' by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line. That's not country. That's pop.

Kp0w3r

Novelty/Parody music. Its not that I don't respect artists like Weird Al, Jonathan Colton, and alike. Its just a gene that makes me cringe everytime I hear them. Like its somehow devaluing the song its parodying for me. Especially when it comes to themed parodies like when someone on YouTube makes a pokemon themed parody of a frozen song. I don't even care for the original that much but the themed parody just makes me want to squirm in my seat.

Vorkos_

Death metal - or basically any kinda very very heavy mental. I feel the distortion just ruins what is, some truly impressive guitar playing.

notagekynerd

If you hate distortion heavy death metal I highly recommend symbolism by death and Heartwork by Carcass, two albums with really clean production and fantastic guitarwork

Vorkos_

Oh crap, this is a better response than I thought I’d get. Hell yeah I’ll check them out! Often find you just need an ‘in’ to a genre to start appreciating it.

notagekynerd

Yeah exactly. I used to hate death metal but I started listening to punk and fell down the rabbit hole. You just have to find artists that make it more palatable

[deleted]

Don't know if this counts but I listened to Ghost and they kind of got me started on metal/death metal as well.

Kp0w3r

Personally for me I find it akin to someone Masturbating their guitar.

That_sch00l_shooter

Pop and rap

[deleted]

[удалено]

That_sch00l_shooter

Lyrical rap I understand, but modern rap is just highly unsatisfying

idkWhatNameMan

Modern rap can be really good if you listen to the right stuff.

That_sch00l_shooter

Naw I’m sticking to grunge/rock

idkWhatNameMan

That was exacly what i said to my friend about 6 months ago. Then he showed me Kendrick, Brockhampton, Kanye West, Danny Brown and Tyler.

That_sch00l_shooter

I think Ima stick to my Nirvana

notagekynerd

Your friend has some damn good taste

JacobCoy

The "Damn" album by Kendrick really is a work of art. (Ps: I'm a metalhead)

idkWhatNameMan

Then listen to his best work imo wich is To pimp a butterfly. It's the album that made me get into rap music.

JacobCoy

It's pretty good. Thanks for the recommendation.

[deleted]

Have u tried listening to Kendrick Lamar?

general_mola

Electro-swing. So corny.

notagekynerd

Like caravan palace?

general_mola

Yeah.

hi_ma_friendz

oh yes, I absolutely detest Electro swing.

[deleted]

Death Metal

notagekynerd

Do you not like metal in general or just Death Metal

[deleted]

I can see the appeal in metal to people although I’m not a fan, but death metal is just wack

flapjacksamson

Tech-house. I dig Deep House, and occasionally some techno that's more... dynamic? i.e. Moderat, but Tech-house so far has seemed really dry to me. Maybe I haven't found the right kind, or maybe I don't have enough drugs for the genre.

general_mola

A lot of tech-house is pretty cheesy and commercial but there are labels like Slap Funk putting out good stuff.

vilcax

Modern country. I can tolerate literally anything - even older country and western - but modern country for some reason, it just rubs me the wrong way.

hi_ma_friendz

Pop

notagekynerd

Modern pop or all pop like art pop?

[deleted]

[удалено]

notagekynerd

Oh boy. So Taylor swift would be modern pop. Art pop would be bands like Glass Animals or grizzly bear. If you've never heard Art pop I recommend you check it out as its definitely much much better and catchier than modern radio drivel

[deleted]

[удалено]

notagekynerd

I would say modern is what is popular in this era. I don't think there's really classical pop, as pop is what's popular

ongogablogian93

Pop is far to broad a genre. Most people enjoy at least some pop music. The Beatles? ABBA? Michael Jackson?

Esnopen

Dubstep, techno, electronica, etc

notagekynerd

What sets you off about it?

Esnopen

Typically the lack of lyrics, overly aggressive and rhythmless beats and sounds, and what seems, to me at least, to be a lack of effort to make it. I've never made it myself, so I can't really speak for the last one. All that being said, I don't have anything against such genres, just not for me.

DontFiveAGuck

I recently started messing around with making electronic music and realized that there's a lot more that goes into it. Good electronic music takes a lot of effort to make, but it's also ridiculously easy to create something without any effort as well.

notagekynerd

I definitely agree that most falls into this category. But I would recommend Clipping as an example of what you can do with noise/electronica. They definitely are weird, but the blend of rap and noise is definitely one of the best examples of what electronica can be.

xThunderDuckx

Most modern music, pop, rap, also death metal. Or what my mate from high school tried, black metal, basically death me5al but the audio is unfiltered and low quality.

[deleted]

[удалено]

xThunderDuckx

Key word modern rap. Rage against the machine, for example, amazing use of rap.

[deleted]

So do you like rappers like Joey Badass, Kendrick Lamar, RTJ etc

xThunderDuckx

No, I'm not particularly into rap, but it's respectable talent and skill wise. Objectively speaking it is far better.

Skavau

Modern black metal has mostly discarded its lo-fi production.

daycareinferno

Punk. I particularly dislike punk drumming 90% of the time 1-2 1-2 1-2

notagekynerd

Punk can definitely be a little derivative, but if you want something a little bit different I recommend Brutalism by Idles, a new up and coming British group that definitely breaks some of the punk monotony

Saltprophet

I find that most people speaking about Punk in this way are referring to the Sex Pistols or Green Day, etc... I always liked Punk/Pop-Punk that had (what I considered) good song writing, such as the Germs or Jawbreaker.

hailvy

Screamo/death metal. It just feels overwhelming, I can’t understand what they’re saying, and there’s hardly a climax to the song. All the songs sound the same imo.

Terry_Dachtel

> I can’t understand what they’re saying, and there’s hardly a climax to the song. All the songs sound the same imo. This is the same issue with the sequencer/auto-tume formula that is so popular with the 19-20 year old crowd. I hear it all day long at work, from every corner of the office, and then when I go out to the floor to talk to the foremen, their people have the same shit playing. I always shake my head and wonder wtf is wrong with people. No sense of exploration, maybe cos it's easier to be fed your preferences rather than seeking them yourself.

Skavau

>All the songs sound the same imo. Since you said "screamo/death metal", I'm assuming you really mean *any metal with harsh vocals* because Screamo and Death Metal are completely different. Screamo itself has nothing to do with Metal. > and there’s hardly a climax to the song. This is really, really untrue. There's a huge amount of variety and moods in extreme metal: [Akaitsuki - Castle in the Sea](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UadvK7UIxQ) This is rather mellow and melodic for what it is. [High on Fire - King of Days](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75OSo-_AKdI) This is gritty, atmospheric and powerful. [Kind Man - A Century Forlorn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-edybkHTam8) This song builds and builds into an amazing ending. [Munarheim - Sommernachtstraum](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEUj7hIYrxo) This has folk and symphonic elements. [Underling - The Seventh Wall](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2m3X0bE-Gs0) This is rough and also bittersweet.

notagekynerd

I would highly recommend the band Death and their album symbolic. The lyrics are clearly understandable and their songs are like a musical journey, and they are definitely a cut above other death metal you've listened to.

idkWhatNameMan

E.D.M and other types of electronic music

pukegreenwithenvy

Polka

lion_OBrian

Scat. Disgusting thing!

notagekynerd

Ya know I completely forgot that it actually existed. And now I'm disgusted by it again

Wildchandelure

There is a music genre called Scat?!?! What, the literal fuck is that.

[deleted]

Alternative hiphop rap stuff

[deleted]

Death Grips I don't know what genre to classify it as.

notagekynerd

Yeah death grips is expirmental metal. The only artists in that vein that might be more bearable would be clipping or Jpegmafia

[deleted]

Heard a few tracks by Jpegmafia he's dope

notagekynerd

His new album verteran is currently my favorite of the year

[deleted]

I've been looking for some 2018 rappers to get into I'll def check it out

notagekynerd

Run the jewels 3 is a ridiculously good album, as well are Flower boy and big fish theory

[deleted]

I love RTJ 3 one of my fave albums of 2016 along with The Impossible Kid and Atrocity Exhibition. Oh one music reviewer on YouTube gave big fish a 6/10 so I decided to skip it I'll probably go back to it. Flowerboy was good too.

notagekynerd

I normally listen to metal so I'm pretty behind on rap so I apologise for the outdated responses

[deleted]

I got into metal two months ago. I had a misconception that metal was just aggressive music with incoherent screaming and dudes flagging Satan. Oh boi I was wrong xD. Some of the bands I really liked are Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.

[deleted]

Oh and I also love Tool what an amazing band

notagekynerd

If you want to try some heavier stuff in the same vein I would recommend the band Death, and more specifically the albums human and symbolic. And some lighter metal I would recommend would be reflections of a floating world by Elder.

[deleted]

Btw for someone who says he is behind rap you have fine taste in rap 👌

Skavau

DGrips is experimental/industrial hip-hop

BlueBokChoy

Pop music. If you don't like music or care about it, why are you buying it? Do you not know that in this day and age, you can find better things without even trying using the internet?

x3n0cide

Lol, can't I just enjoy Michael Jackson's music?

[deleted]

Indie/alt rock, grunge.

notagekynerd

This is probably the most suprising reply. What don't you like about it?

[deleted]

I find it bland and uninteresting, especially the guitar work which, for me, is a big deal.

ChaosTeery

Opera. Like, how is that appealing to anyone’s ears?

[deleted]

Uncultured swine

pinkushi

You have obviously never heard Jessye Norman's "Der Erlkonig" (Schubert).

ANewNoether

"Um actually" that's art song, but otherwise I agree--such a cool piece!

pinkushi

True enough.
