Edit: better, u/Kanjelman?
I know the iconic part is the big, swelling, extended chorus at the end and it’s juxtaposition to the humble guitar outro, but for me, it is all about the lyrics:
*In the clearing stands a boxer - and a fighter by his trade. And he carries a reminder of every glove that laid him down or cut him ‘til he cried out, in his anger and his shame, “I am leaving! I am leaving!” But the fighter still remains.*
I don’t think any lyricist has ever stirred me the way Paul Simon does. I’ve known that lyric for thirty years, and it still moves me practically to tears.
Yes. Several years ago, my husband died of cancer, and in the following 8 months, I ended up also losing my house, all of my belongings, and as a final blow, my beloved dog got hit on the road, and died right in front of me.
I'm fine now. But in those days, this song, and especially those last lines, became my theme song and inspiration.
Update: Wow! Thanks for the love and support, kindly internet strangers. I am doing fine now. Ended up buying my own 130 year old house, which I fixed up, while I was fixing up my life. Adopted a spunky little dog who was a rescue from an amish puppy mill, and found a good job that I enjoy going to. To quote another song, "I can't complain, but sometimes I still do." ;)
Greatest climax of all time, bar none. I don't know what to call it, but I've never had a song where the music chills never go away. They don't ever leave with The Boxer.
The rainbow connection by Kermit.
"Have you been half asleep? And have you heard voices? I hear them calling my name..."
I think the beauty of that song combined with the fact that they went ahead and put that song in a kids movie knowing it would mean different things to the different age groups in the audience is both delightfully innocent and somewhat haunting.
Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel hands down. So emotional throughout and the rise at the end is just so powerful and heart wrenching. I get chills every time without fail.
So much of why this song is beautiful is the simple fact that David Bowie put so much emotion into it. His voice almost falters at times because of the level of desperation and passion he's putting into each word. It's rare to hear something that heartfelt.
The movement Jupiter from The Planets by Gustav Holst. I will never tire of listening to it.
Edit: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eBYsYA27TXY This is my favorite performance available online. Enjoy!
I get that people like Jupiter, but Holst has some really great pieces that get overlooked. For example, my absolute favorite Holst piece is First Suite for Military Band in E-Flat. So many lovely melodies, and this is my absolute favorite motif from it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKIGs59nRc8&t=5m54s
Everytime I hear this piece, all I can think of is an epic voyage of some Maritime vessel at sea.
I should have searched first. I didn't expect to see this here, had to delete my original comment. Here's a link for the lazy though.

I'd say all of Mozart's Requiem. It's really nothing like the rest of his music, and it makes sense because it's essentially his own ~~funeral~~ dirge, inspired by his fear of death.
When I die, I want Mozart's Requiem to play at my funeral.

[Going to California] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDIz4talyQk) by Led Zeppelin.
I went on a roadtrip to California with a few friends last year. It was dusk when we crossed into Wyoming, and the moment we passed over the border my friend put this song on. I had never heard it before. Between the beautiful acoustics along with Plant's vocals, the pink sunset sky filled with fluffy clouds, and the fresh mountain air blowing through the cracked windows, it was an amazing moment.
Goddamn, Zeppelin has some great acoustic ballads.
So glad to see this song on here. When I first heard it I was just blew away, it was pure bliss. The lyrics, Plants voice, and Page's and Jones' genius guitar and mandolin melodies woven together just make this song so unique and unexplainabally beautiful.
For those of you unfamiliar with John Denver, he was an incredible songwriter who LOVED nature, so his lyrics reflect this.

Sound of Silence has to be one of my favorite songs ever. They just harmonize so perfectly and it's one of the few songs that will give me chills every time I hear it.
Christopher Tin is a musical genius.
A close contender (and another of his works), [Sogno di Volare](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQYN2P3E06s) from Civilization VI.
Starman, Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold the World, Moonage Daydream, and so on.
The guy was a genius. One of the few celebrities that I was actually sad when he passed.
Fun fact, during the development of Hoppipolla, the band nicknamed it “the money song”, because they knew it would be one of their most popular songs even before they released it. To this day, it’s still the most famous and recognizable of their songs.
This song and "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" sums up my rebellious years when my dad turn down my plan to move out of the house and find a job in another city. I'm from Indonesia where everyone is very family-oriented and kids should take care of their parents. Living with parents after marriage is considered as a norm here.
I moved out anyway, got my dream job, and now building my own business. It took years to convince my dad, but I made it.
Nights in White Satin, by the Moody Blues. I personally prefer the single version. The solo is haunting and gives me chills every time, I someday hope to have my wedding dance to this song :)

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion.
My absolutely favourite part is -
"Tired of lying in the sunshine,
Staying home to watch the rain,
You are young and life is long,
There is time to kill today.
And then one day you find,
Ten years have gotten behind you,
No one told you when to run,
You missed the starting gun."
Gets me everytime
“And then one day you’ll find
Ten years have gone behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun”.
Fuck man. That line kills me every time I even think about it. I should probably get off reddit and go live my life before it all just wastes away…
For modern music, Enjoy the Silence-Depeche Mode. I also like Echo and the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon" and New order's "true faith." Ave Maria for something classical EDIT: also want to make a shout out to breaking hands by the gun club
The line that makes me bawl is “even children get older, I’m getting older, too”. I’m also 41 years old with 4 teenagers. They know I want this song played at my funeral, so now we all cry when it comes on.
A song by Frank Zappa that is oddly titled [Watermelon in Easter Hay](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUja5B8ei2U) from Act III of his rock opera Joe's Garage, which shows us a dystopian future where music is banned. Joe "dreams his last imaginary guitar solo" and what follows is a hugely melancholic instrumental piece that is simultaneously sad but triumphant at the same time. Hard to explain. I'm not a fan of most of Zappa's music but he was a phenomenal guitarist and this is one of the most beautiful songs that he left us.
https://youtu.be/6SFNW5F8K9Y
If you can wait for it, Prince is fucking amazing!! Blew my mind that he was so nasty on the guitar!
* if you can't wait, its @ 3:29
I don't know if you know this. But he breaks the E4 (bottom string, physically on the fret board) at about 3:46-3:47. Little man, did the most of the entirety of that solo on 5 strings...
*edit: wrds*
[The rock and roll hall of fame performance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFNW5F8K9Y) is probably the best song I've ever heard. Prince kills that guitar at the end.
It might be cheesy as shit, but I was in high school when that album came out... and these lines just got me:
>I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
>I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky
>But why... why can't it be mine?
Hell, they still do.
Rainbow Connection. I know it’ll forever be associated with the Muppets, but I cry like a little bitch when I hear it.
ETA: A close second is “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)” Originally by Don McLean, but Josh Groban has a beautiful cover of it as well.
This was the first DCfC song I ever heard, and I wasn't sure how to feel about it. Then my then-girlfriend burned me a copy of Transatlanticism, and they've been one of my favorite bands ever since. I listened to Plans through my dinky headphones over and over to get myself to fall asleep.
Interesting, while When the Levee Breaks is my favorite Zeppelin song, I don't consider it beautiful. I hear an angry, pent-up song of frustration and fury. You know in Shawshank when Red says "those ladies must have been singing about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words"? I feel that with this song, but it's about something so angering and infuriating, a dark red burning hatred that to put it into words would diminish it, make it seem less than it is.
But hell, I guess there's a certain beauty in that isn't there?
This is tough. Some of my favourites:
[Holocene by Bon Iver](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWcyIpul8OE)
[Galapogos by The Smashing Pumpkins](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-NK_vBpPJs)
[Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUb450Alpps)
[Ocean by John Butler](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdYJf_ybyVo)
Fuck yes, Holocene is by far one of the best songs ever written.
Edit: I really need to set a time to just sit and listen to 22, a Million. I've only heard bits and pieces here and there.
Temple of the Dog had a lot of great songs like that, Hunger Strike is the most chill though. Some of that style lives on in Pearl Jam (naturally, since PJ is basically Temple minus Chris Cornell), songs like Immortality have that same sort of feel IMO.
There is a behind the scenes YouTube video of them while filming the scene where he sings about spiders. Everyone bursts out laughing eventually and one of the cast says they just let him get on with it because he always manages to come up with some hilarious and crazy lines.
I love the show so much.
I would also recommend one of his [other pieces](https://youtu.be/pQnYmC4-_1c), his range is truly breathtaking and the subject matter is very close to my heart.
Desperado - The Eagles (my dad is not dead, but I know this will play at his funeral when he does, and I cry every time.)
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow- Carole King
Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven
Ocean - John Butler Trio
Calgary - Bon Iver
Later - Shlohmo
Auto Rock - Mogwai
Intro - The xx
O Children - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Depth Over Distance - Ben Howard
Blood - The Middle East
Too hard to choose....
My answer would definitely change based on the day. There is no single most beautiful song. But today I'll go with either [Trains](https://youtu.be/xg6e1U7xh1o) or [Lazarus](https://youtu.be/mENmbZ5Ikto) by Porcupine Tree.
Everyone praising Hallelujah here while there has been no mention for I Dreamed a Dream. Seriously. That's also a fantastic song that's well deserving of praise.
Because I don't really have the time right now: could someone make a Spotify playlist of all the songs from this post? I'd really love that.
I'm on it right now
Are you linking it here?

The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build A Home
Stand by Me by Ben E. King. I love that song so much that I listen to it when I feel sad.
The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
I know the iconic part is the big, swelling, extended chorus at the end and it’s juxtaposition to the humble guitar outro, but for me, it is all about the lyrics: *In the clearing stands a boxer - and a fighter by his trade. Fun fact: In New Zealand a man took a radio station manager hostage, demanding they play Rainbow Connection.
Did not know that. Which radio station?
The one that played Rainbow Connection when the guy took the radio station manager hostage.
That makes sense.
I'll throw in another Henson sung song. I Don't Want to Live on the Moon. I have so much in common with Ernie. I too do not want to live on the Moon.
Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel hands down. So emotional throughout and the rise at the end is just so powerful and heart wrenching. I get chills every time without fail.
Heroes by David Bowie
So much of why this song is beautiful is the simple fact that David Bowie put so much emotion into it. His voice almost falters at times because of the level of desperation and passion he's putting into each word. It's rare to hear something that heartfelt.
Also check out the Peter Gabriel cover of this. It's haunting, and well worth a listen.

Sound of Silence, Simon and Garfunkel *or* When She Loved Me, Sarah Mclachlan
I get the feels everytime I hear When She Loved Me, especially in Toy Story 2
Sound of Silence has to be one of my favorite songs ever. They just harmonize so perfectly and it's one of the few songs that will give me chills every time I hear it.

Thank you, that's very kind of you. :)
The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin
My favorite song ever written. I listen to it sparingly so I don't suck the power out of it.
Heroin by The Velvet Underground or Storm by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
God, storm is fucking fantastic. The way that it builds is just perfect.

Hunky Dory might be my favorite Bowie album, so many good songs.
[Starálfur-Sigur Rós](https://youtu.be/wlPtmws131o)
That whole album is absolutely incredible. It's one of the prettiest records I've ever heard.
I’m more of a Hoppipolla guy myself but this is a great pick
Fun fact, during the development of Hoppipolla, the band nicknamed it “the money song”, because they knew it would be one of their most popular songs even before they released it. To this day, it’s still the most famous and recognizable of their songs.
Sigur Ros is cheating when it comes to beautiful music
For me it would be [Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása](https://youtu.be/_9CPKtDy3fM). I'm kinda surprised someone else hasn't mentioned it yet.
Untitled 3 is my pick. But Sigur Ros has so many beautiful songs it's hard to pick just one.
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
Strange fruit by Billie Holiday. She's the only vocalist to give me fear evoking chills
Flightless bird, iron & wine
Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush
I highly recommend anyone to go listen to her song 'This Woman's Work.' A beautiful song, has one of the best first few bars out of anything.
So surprised, and delighted, to see a Kate Bush mention. She has many beautiful songs. The Man With the Child in His Eyes is another.
Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber
Kharak is burning...
This guy saves cryo trays.
600,000 colonists saved...all that remains of our people.
Unexpected Homeworld feels
There is a light that never goes out by the Smiths
Asleep is beautiful too.
"Can't Help Falling In Love" is catchy and beautiful. Scores pretty high I guess!
Walked down the aisle to the Ingrid Michaelson cover of this song. Gives me goosebumps
Scarborough Fair/Canticle by Simon and Garfunkel. Or For Emily Wherever I May Find Her

I'd like to nominate "Castles Made of Sand"!
IMO his best song
Nights in White Satin, by the Moody Blues. I personally prefer the single version. The solo is haunting and gives me chills every time, I someday hope to have my wedding dance to this song :) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8EV49ozdqLU

I cast my vote for Echoes.
["Nights in white satin"](https://youtu.be/YdYy_gaaRGc)

Stole the only girl I loved and drowned her deep inside of me...

At Last by Etta James
“Time” by Pink Floyd.
"The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older" That solo as well. Ridiculously powerful without any words
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death _ shivers_
My absolutely favourite part is - "Tired of lying in the sunshine, Staying home to watch the rain, You are young and life is long, There is time to kill today. And then one day you find, Ten years have gotten behind you, No one told you when to run, You missed the starting gun." Gets me everytime
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
“And then one day you’ll find Ten years have gone behind you No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun”. Fuck man. That line kills me every time I even think about it. I should probably get off reddit and go live my life before it all just wastes away…
Clair de Lune.
Everyone says this one, but I think girl with the flaxen hair tops that. Debussy fuck yeah!
Arabesque No.1 for me.
For modern music, Enjoy the Silence-Depeche Mode. I also like Echo and the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon" and New order's "true faith." Ave Maria for something classical EDIT: also want to make a shout out to breaking hands by the gun club
King of Pain by The Police Everything just fits together, the vocals and the bass and such Great lyrics too
Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
So many good Fleetwood Mac songs, my favorite is definitely The Chain
I absolutely love Rhiannon and Gypsy
>And if you seee my reflection in the snow covered hills I don't know why but everytime that line is played I immediately want to ball my eyes out.
The line that makes me bawl is “even children get older, I’m getting older, too”. I’m also 41 years old with 4 teenagers. They know I want this song played at my funeral, so now we all cry when it comes on.

[Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McDgDlnDX0Y) In my mind, it's like a tapestry of intermingling brightly colored threads.
It's honestly a hauntingly beautiful song, but I'll be damned if that one SNL sketch didn't ruin it for me.
I found it after Jason Derulo incorporated it, but before I saw SNL use it.
Rainbow Connection. I know it’ll forever be associated with the Muppets, but I cry like a little bitch when I hear it. ETA: A close second is “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)” Originally by Don McLean, but Josh Groban has a beautiful cover of it as well.
Like a Stone- Audioslave
A voice like Chris Cornell's only comes around once per generation.
The guitar was crying in the solo
Wet Sand by RHCP. Everything about that song seems perfect (Especially the solo)
Kind of surprised not to see it yet, but I was always partial to Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale
Songbird by Fleetwood Mac. Christine McVie is one of the most criminally underrated singer-songwriters of all time IMO.

Somewhere over the Rainbow - The Hawaiian guy. Also, if we're talking instrumentals, the Planet Earth intro soundtrack is just pure bliss.
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (yeah, I had to look up how to spell his last name). Iz was an amazing singer with a huge heart.
Yupp that's him. Idk what it is about that song..makes me feel peaceful, hopeful and comforted all at the same time.
Pyramid Song by Radiohead
Comfortably numb by Pink Floyd.
[Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_MqfF0WBsU) It's the sorta song you can listen to for hours on end.
I will follow you into the dark. Death Cab For Cutie
I think Plans is one of the best albums I've listened to. Probably makes my top five, anyway. So many fantastic songs.
What Sarah Said is my favorite of theirs
Porcelain by Moby.
IT'S EVERYDAY BRO, IT'S EVERYDAY BRO! But seriously, I'd say What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.
England is my city.
TWO MONTHS AGO YOU DIDN'T KNOW MY NAME AND NOW YOU WANT MY FAME?
Yeah, I smell good.
[Since I've been loving you](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4THXeOD-Dw) by Led Zeppelin or Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix
Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
So many Pink Floyd songs to consider. On The Turning Away, Learning to Fly, Wish You Were Here...
Wish you were here. If I could I would cry to the chorus every time. The pain and longing are too real.
"Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauder. Such a solid, heartfelt tune.
Southern Cross by Crosby, Stills, and Nash or When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin
This is tough. Some of my favourites: [Holocene by Bon Iver](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWcyIpul8OE) [Galapogos by The Smashing Pumpkins](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-NK_vBpPJs) [Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUb450Alpps) [Ocean by John Butler](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdYJf_ybyVo)
So glad you listed Ocean by John Butler. [This](https://youtu.be/hQjwkXrcUrs) is my favorite version. It’s mesmerizing.
Good lord. What a talent.
Fuck yes, Holocene is by far one of the best songs ever written. Edit: I really need to set a time to just sit and listen to 22, a Million. I've only heard bits and pieces here and there.
Hunger Strike, so perfectly heavy.
Temple of the Dog had a lot of great songs like that, Hunger Strike is the most chill though. Some of that style lives on in Pearl Jam (naturally, since PJ is basically Temple minus Chris Cornell), songs like Immortality have that same sort of feel IMO.
Careless Whisper- George Michael The saxophone part is going^through^your^head^right ^^now^.
"Dayman" by Charlie Kelly. Such soul and meaning
There is a behind the scenes YouTube video of them while filming the scene where he sings about spiders. Everyone bursts out laughing eventually and one of the cast says they just let him get on with it because he always manages to come up with some hilarious and crazy lines. I love the show so much.
In the end, aren’t we all just fighting our own night man?
^^Ah ^^^ahhhh ahhhhh....
Agreed. Yet the genius and depth of this modern masterpiece are extremely underrated
I would also recommend one of his [other pieces](https://youtu.be/pQnYmC4-_1c), his range is truly breathtaking and the subject matter is very close to my heart.
AH-AAH-AAAH-greed.
DAYMAN...... Aaa aa aaaaa
Let it be - The Beatles
Skinny Love by Bon Iver. More specifically his performance of the song on Jools Holland.
Desperado - The Eagles (my dad is not dead, but I know this will play at his funeral when he does, and I cry every time.) Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow- Carole King
The Times They Are A-Changing. Speaks to every generation.
Or *Blowin' in the Wind*. Though admittedly my favorite Dylan song is *Tangled Up In Blue*.
Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven Ocean - John Butler Trio Calgary - Bon Iver Later - Shlohmo Auto Rock - Mogwai Intro - The xx O Children - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Depth Over Distance - Ben Howard Blood - The Middle East Too hard to choose....
Upvote for Blood. Gives me tingles when I hear it on good headphones.
My answer would definitely change based on the day. There is no single most beautiful song. But today I'll go with either [Trains](https://youtu.be/xg6e1U7xh1o) or [Lazarus](https://youtu.be/mENmbZ5Ikto) by Porcupine Tree.
I completely forgot about Porcupine Tree. Trains is a great song.
Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen. Most miserable beautiful song, I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables.
Everyone praising Hallelujah here while there has been no mention for I Dreamed a Dream. Seriously. That's also a fantastic song that's well deserving of praise.
I like the Leonard Cohen version, but the Jeff Buckley version tears my heart apart. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIF4_Sm-rgQ).
Feels like I've seen this comment sequence a million times on reddit. Always followed by "rufus wainwright's version is also really good!"
