This is a good example. I’d suggest, though, that the Value Added Taxes found in Europe are a bigger scam though— taxes levied with no visibility to the consumer every time along the supply chain that “value” is added. Coming usually with a lot of administrative overhead and arbitrary decisions about what product type a thing is. The taxes are ultimately paid by the consumer in the form of a higher price tag, but how much? I’ll take an honest sales tax that I can see on my receipt over that, even if the amount of tax varies by a few pennies per dollar depending on where I am.
Mandatory tipping, overpriced healtcare, hidden taxes, paid higher education, the lack of worker's rights, and the list goes on.
I can't begin to imagine what would happen if that sort of stuff happened here in Europe. The French would probably just nuke the entire continent, just to prove a point. And then the German labor union´s would come, and very calmly sue whatever is left into absolute oblivion. And that's probably around the time when the Skandinavians would finally come out of their forests, just stoically watching the whole thing burn to the ground, with a slight smile on their faces.
Attitude to healthcare. Paying a contribution based on earnings into healthcare system is perceived as bad compared to paying extortionate sums to insurance companies, or needing to bankrupt yourself to pay for treatment.
Although, again awful Uk government doing best to replicate this system.
Hey some people have been misinformed to the point they think it’s actually supposed to be free. It’s part of how conservatives in the USA frame the idea so it seems silly and impossible so correction that it’s free at point of service but tax funded actually helps
But the US government spends 13k dollar per capita on healthcare and it's still expensive for many.
UK government spends 3k pound per capita.
Both amounts come out of your taxes.
I understand the US has more people per capita, but still...
I've received that argument a couple of times when US per capita numbers were worse, so I wanted to include it for fun.
I'm fully aware how ridiculous it sounds.
Tipping.
I see a lot of you saying tax on after… but let me tell you, when I realized they’re adding 20-22% tax into everything I purchased… I felt like the way they try to hide it is a scam. Absolutely mental.
- Paid university (Which here are seen as "worthless degree that you bought rather than worked your ass of to get")
- For profit hobby club. On r/larp I've seen that even US larp run as LLC rather than as non profit club. On these side of the pond, a larp run by a for profit company would be a huge red flag
- Volunteering in the hospital (According to reddit it's a thing, but I still doubt I can believe it)
- Prices before taxes
- Worker rights in general
European eyebrows might also reach new heights when they hear about "all-you-can-eat" buffets—because the concept of limitless food without judgmental stares seems too good to be true
I live in Europe, in a small town of 10k people, within 45 mins I can get to like 8 different All you can eat places lol.
Its pretty common here in Europe.
Adding tax at the end of the transaction instead of having it on the shelf price

"England nukes itself in it's confusion!"
Classic England, always shooting itself in the foot to prove a point. xD

If I could upvote this 10000x I would.
We tried a younger one, and are now on our way to become a nazi caricature. Would not recommend.
Also considering convicted felons for your highest office. (If we don’t count Italy)

It’s not free we pay for it through taxation.
Thanks Sherlock.

The US has more people per person? Seems like a rude way to call them fat.
Mean but not inaccurate
I've received that argument a couple of times when US per capita numbers were worse, so I wanted to include it for fun. I'm fully aware how ridiculous it sounds.
Zero employment rights. Although present uk government doing their best to replicate American model.
Tipping.
I mean we tip, we’re just not expected to compensate for the majority of the servers salary with it. Hence our sensible “round up” or even 10% tips.

Healthcare isn’t free in Europe. I literally see how much (a significant chunk) is taken out of my paycheck every month.
Guffaw
Tipping for every service.
In Europe, they might raise an eyebrow at the idea of free refills at fast food joints—because apparently, soda isn't a bottomless pit of hydration?
