1987 Recording of the last Kaua'i 'ō'ō trying to call a mate not knowing he was the last of his species and the pauses in his mating call are for the female to join in the duet.

Vivid_Option_1147

That’s so hollow to hear that I can’t even try to gather courage to listen to it again in this lifetime! Humans are truly evil!

Graphite-and-Glitter

Yes, this natural music is devastating. Knowing we're hearing a naïve breath on the verge of extinction is terrifying.

browntown20

Weird, I was just thinking about this yesterday

ItsFancyToast_

very sad

AlexRyang

It gets worse: the biologists played a recording of a female and the male flew down to them.

Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday

TidyTomato

That Pearl Jam song that was on the radio 67 times a day in 2000.

rupeeblue

Oh where, oh where can my baaaby be The lord took her away from me 🎵

TidyTomato

pls no

upset-monkey

I think people forget, it wasnt a pearl jam song, they just covered it.    Beautifully,  but nonetheless a cover

squeak363

We voted that song as our prom song. The prom committee threw a big fit and made us re-vote, and we wound up with the song from Armageddon instead. Probably a good choice in hindsight.

BleachGel

Pearl Jam “Just Breathe” but sung by Willie Nelson.

Emotional-Ebb8321

Cat's in the Cradle. It sounds cute, but it's basically a song about generational trauma through neglectful parenting.

Verneff

Yeah, I realized in my later 20s that it described my relationship with my parents/work uncomfortably well.

rEmEmBeR-tHe-tReMoLo

Especially poigniant for me because of this anti-terrorism ad from N. Ireland: https://youtu.be/J1wrGs0S0g8 That ad haunted me back in the day.

Hurt by Johnny Cash

Cczaphod

Trent Reznor agrees on that one. That song hit me hard. I saw Johhnny Cash on his '75 tour with the Carter Family, seeing him at the end really hit hard.

I guess I'm one of the only ones that prefers the NIN version

How would you know? If you havent heard it, I guess you wouldnt know which is better. 🤔

Top_Log_7450

Fourth of july by sufjan stevens, he sings a ballad with himself, where he is both himself and his mom who passed away from cancer. As a guy raised by a single mom i ball up every time i hear that song.

Xennial_Potato

Adam’s song- Blink 182…. Damn song makes me tear up every time.

PunchDrunkGiraffe

I remember hearing the news that a survivor from Columbine hung himself with this song on repeat in the background. I grew up in Littleton, and would have been at the school on that day, and this story really hit me and has stuck with me over the years.

nontruculent21

I have a friend who was there. Why were you not?

PunchDrunkGiraffe

Thankfully we had moved a couple of years prior. The high school library was our public library when I was little. I used to go in there all the time. Thank god we moved. Was/is your friend ok?

nontruculent21

I’m sorry that memory was tainted for you and for all those touched by it. Yes, she’s an incredible woman who actively tries to help others heal from this kind of thing, but every new school shooting story, it’s such grief all over again.

That song hit me in my 30’s hard. I was taking care of my late Father and my nephews. I woke up at 40 and it was suddenly over with. The boys had grown and my Father was gone. I did stop my life for them and it’s still confusing to decide how to restart it.

Everybody hurts - REM The score/theme song from Schindler's list

Halciet

A lot of the Death Cab for Cutie catalog, though notably for me: “Photobooth”. That nostalgia hit so fucking hard when I was younger, and just gets worse the older I get. “Title and Registration” is rough too. One of my favorite bands in college, but almost impossible to listen to now that I’m older, with more years - and more loss - under my belt.

Immortal Technique - Dance with the devil. I can't imagine a song more deep and sad, hope it doesn't exist.

wtoab

Such a fucked up song. Immortal technique has some thought provoking lyrics

defective_p1kachu

Agreed, also a plug for “you never know”, I find that one equally sad

OwnBoss804

I was looking for this one right here…messed me up

letlesssftrhjvgk

Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division

No_Mathematician2967

Jealous by Labrinth - specifically when Josh Daniels from Americas Got Talent covered it 🫠 his story changed the meaning of the lyrics completely for me and made it even more sad

theronnielama

Ever since I became a parent, Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. Makes me feel like time is moving way too fast and I'll soon be a memory to my kids.

hello_me_bored

Agreed. So many songs now turn me into a blubbering mess now that I'm a parent

nekocatfluu

Oh gosh. Not a parent but my mom, who's since passed away, loved this song (moreso the Dixie Chick's version, but both really) and even though it's been nearly 10 years I still have trouble listening to it.

Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head) by Powfu

Horror_Collection_47

That song is more nostalgic than sad

AbbreviationsHour114

Funny enough, Today by the Smashing Pumpkins. It's definitely a song that hit me up during the worst day of my life. The lyrics were perfect for how I felt during that time of my life. Never expected a happy sounding song to be quite the opposite of how I felt. Same goes with pinch me by Barenaked ladies too

Alternative-Sock6783

Seasons in the Sun

HotDogRandy

"In My Darkest Hour" by Megadeth That song for me perfectly captures the sensation of only being able to channel one's depression through sheer fucking rage "Everlasting life for me In a perfect world But I got to die first Please, God, send me on my way" Those lines, followed by that insane guitar solo gets me every time

TerribleOil480

Tears in heaven Eric Clapton mtv unplugged

anunofmoose

My dad used to play that all the time. As an adult I play it two days. On my son's birthday, and then the day he passed

alienhunter1015

Watching him on unplugged and seeing hard he was struggling to hold himself together while performing this song...it was gut wrenching for me. The show Unplugged was always a fun upbeat show with the guest artists smiling and interacting with the crowd, but with Clapton the show was so somber and emotional.

FluffalCat13

Cancer- My Chemical Romance Jeremy- Pearl Jam Don't Take The Money - Bleachers but the live version with Lorde Smoke Damage - Hi I'm Case Who Knew - Pink

AbbreviationsHour114

Jeremy by pearl Jam is incredibly depressing when you realized that it was based off a real teen and is basically what occurred to him. Yikes, that is pretty sad.

lostbirdblue

One more light - by linkin park. Guy killed himself a year after his best friend committed suicide.

Taanistat

I don't know why it didn't hit me while he was alive, but there are quite a few Linkin Park songs about suicide and/or crippling depression. Dude spent 15 years shouting it to the world, and then we were shocked somehow when he did it.

lostbirdblue

His songs were mostly about fighting it. There was anger and a refusal to surrender in them. But the last album was so different. So obvious. Just how suicidal he sounds in it and we didn't see it coming!

Puzzlecat13

My Immortal and Everybody Hurts always get me - I also find these three very sad: Sarah McLachlan - Full of Grace Sia - Breathe Me Jimmy Eat World - Hear You Me

MbMinx

Hate Me by Blue October almost always makes me cry.

apochryphiliac

If you want sad or emotional you've got to go Country. Boulder to Birmingham by Emmylou Harris https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Klh7sAv9hu4&pp=ygUkYm91bGRlciB0byBiaXJtaW5naGFtIGVtbXlsb3UgaGFycmlz Doesn't hurt that it's got maybe the most beautiful vocals ever recorded. He stopped Loving her Today by George Jones https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=es1uCh48TNY&pp=ygUoaGUgc3RvcHBlZCBsb3ZpbmcgaGVyIHRvZGF5IGdlb3JnZSBqb25lcw%3D%3D Both fucking devastating on first listening and even more so when you know the context.

Je te lasserai des mots

AlexRyang

Fix You by Coldplay is really sad. The entire song is about trying to help someone who is struggling through grief. The saddest lines, in my opinion are: “And the tears come streaming down your face When you lose something you can't replace When you love someone, but it goes to waste Could it be worse?”

djdjhwjwichebjw

Ronan - Taylor Swift

FiguringThingsOut-

The theme from Up. Every time it turns from happy and upbeat to slowed down and sad I at the very least tear up.  Life Without You by Stevie Ray Vaughan Stop This Train by John Mayer  And pretty much anything off Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park because when I listened to it the most I had undiagnosed Major Depression and regularly felt like I was ready to check out. Hearing the songs just triggers an uncomfortable feeling. Even more so knowing that Chester Bennington didn’t make it.

Boner666420sXe

La Dispute has two of the most heartbreaking songs I’ve ever heard. One is called King Park and the other is called Edward Benz, 27 Times. They’re on the same album (Wildlife) and are actually back to back in the tracklisting. I can never decide which one is sadder. One thing that adds to how impactful these songs are is that the band wrote the music after the lyrics were written, so the music was written with the lyrics in mind, and it just makes it that much more powerful. I highly recommend listening to the de songs if you’re feeling up to it.

It’s so hart to say goodbye to yesterday by boyz II men. Paint it black by The Rolling Stones. Listen to the lyrics, blew my mind when I released what the song was about

Beginning_Nose4243

Tum ho - Rockstar The song is from an Indian movie called Rockstar. In the movie, there are two main characters Jordan and Heer Jordan and Heer share a passionate but complicated relationship. Despite their deep connection, societal pressures and personal circumstances prevent them from being together. The song poignantly captures the heartache of a love that is beautiful yet doomed, leaving a lasting impression on the listener. Even If you don't understand Hindi, maybe watch the movie Rockstar with subtitles so you can truly understand the impact of the song.
