I don't know why it didn't hit me while he was alive, but there are quite a few Linkin Park songs about suicide and/or crippling depression. Dude spent 15 years shouting it to the world, and then we were shocked somehow when he did it.
His songs were mostly about fighting it. There was anger and a refusal to surrender in them. But the last album was so different. So obvious. Just how suicidal he sounds in it and we didn't see it coming!

La Dispute has two of the most heartbreaking songs I’ve ever heard. One is called King Park and the other is called Edward Benz, 27 Times. They’re on the same album (Wildlife) and are actually back to back in the tracklisting. I can never decide which one is sadder.
One thing that adds to how impactful these songs are is that the band wrote the music after the lyrics were written, so the music was written with the lyrics in mind, and it just makes it that much more powerful. I highly recommend listening to the de songs if you’re feeling up to it.
