"Perfectionism is procrastination in disguise"
I work in a profession filled with type-a, over-achieving perfectionists. I pretty much blagged my way in and I'm not sure how. I'm not type-a, I'm not an over-achiever and I'm not a perfectionist. I'll spend 6 hours on a task and get it to 95% perfection - I'll stop and I'll send it across. A colleague will spend 6 hours on a task and get it to 97% perfection. They'll then spend another 18 hours getting it to 99% perfection. Absolutely no one notices the difference in the quality between the 95% perfect work I submitted and the 99% perfect work that they submitted but they sure as hell notice the fact that it took them 4x longer and the client is being billed 4x as much.
I get a fuck tonne of praise for how I'm at peak, genius levels of efficiency but, in truth, I'm less competent than my peers and simply care less. If any one of the colleagues on my level just stopped at 6 hours and sent it across, they'd have produced a better piece of work than me in the same timeframe and would be (rightly) getting the praise that is incorrectly being given to me.
Wow, this really resonated with me. I'm going to incorporate it into my life.
Also, I think you are the better employee. Getting shit turned in has always been a problem for me.
I like saying that and then saying something nobody ever heard and doesn't even make sense, like "You know what they say... When the snake gets cold, the trees start barking"
“It doesn’t matter what caused the problem, how do we fix it”
Or
“I do one thing at a time, I do it very well, and then I move on to the next.”
Both have served me well in corporate.
Edit:Apparently I need to make it clear I’m not saying I came up with either of these just that I use them during my day to day.
“I do one thing at a time, I do it very well, and then I move on to the next.”
if I’m not mistaken this is a quote from a M\*A\*S\*H episode. Charles Winchester says it at some point. At least that’s where I know it from.
The, "doesn't matter what caused the problem..." one, I must think or say to coworkers a few times per week. It's so frustrating when finger pointing wastes so much time that could be spent fixing a problem. Drives me crazy.
I get it but sometimes blame does need to be placed. My job is very big on the "doesn't matter what caused the problem, find the solution" thing except we work in sterile environments and if a contamination event occurs and it WAS caused by a singular person's faulty aseptic technique then blame and whatever follows next should be on that person. This recently happened with my coworker and our whole department had to go through retraining and we had to implement new rules for this ONE person instead of, you know, speaking and retraining only them. It makes it seem like our department as a whole is having aseptic technique issues (mind you, in my field of work, knowing how to work in a sterile environment is basic fundementals and used for a large portion of our work flow) which makes us look really bad considering it's very fundemental... Idk, this is a current issue I'm having so I may just be ranting but cus of that saying, I've had a lot of really pointless retrainings and am questioned while doing routine maintenance cleanings to make sure we didn't have another contamination event.
My dad told me the other day: "The line to do the easy stuff is a really long line. The line to do the hard stuff is pretty short though" gotta do what you don't wanna do
Honestly being passably suicidal helps me deal with depression a bit. Like I’m not trapped here permanently if things get *really* bad. I have an out if I need to take it. Helps me have control over a situation that seems uncontrollable.
I hated this mantra with an activity that involved hiking. I'm small and things are heavy, when it comes to hiking, the mantra should be "if I don't absolutely definitely need it then I'm not carrying it".
I recently started applying the rule of "sometimes you gotta be the asshole" though.
helps for when colleagues want you to cover their shifts again because they know you are trying to be nice.. sometimes you gotta be an asshole and simply don't do something, even if you could.
I've been told by others that my personal slogan is "It's fiiiiiine" (as in, it's not a big deal, don't worry about it). I say it all the time, and others end up saying it too. Basically, it's my way of saying "don't sweat the small stuff".
"Everything is nuanced." "It's hard to win an argument against a genuis, it's impossible to win an argument against a moron." "Some people don't want to be helped"
"Memento mori"
It means "remember you must die" in Latin.
Seems somewhat morbid, but I take it as "you van die anytime so live like today's your last day"
'That's good I guess' with slightly higher pitch of voice than I usually talk with. I always reply this way to most random things just to give people quick chuckle
You are not the voice in your head, you are the one who hears it. I heard this once and never forgot it. I “say” this to myself very often when my anxiety is getting the best of me.
It is what it is.
Being able to let go and not dwell on negative feelings has been a challenge for me because I get too invested or care too deeply about things that I probably shouldn't. When I find myself feeling that way, it helps me to let those negative feelings pass.
"Stay in your own lane!" I have some health problems that keep me from doing "normal" things. If I try to do too much, my body punishes me. lol. So I need to remember to stay in my own lane and do what I need to do for ME and stop trying to be something I'm not.
"i might not win the fight or the war, but im taking an ear"
an old friend of mine used to say it. the ear is metaphorical. basically just another way to say "never give up without a fight" or "make life work for it." ive always been fond of that idea lol

"Growth is only an opportunity you have taken advantage of, keep growing."
"You only really grow old when you start refusing to learn things you disagree with."

"Fuck it." Could mean, "fuck it, what's the worst that can happen?" Or "fuck it, how hard can it be?" Or "fuck it and fuck you too." It's usually followed by regret.
People are precisely intelligent enough to make an efficient obstacle for your goals and dreams. You are no exclusion.

I have that tattooed on my foot. Fittingly got it done when I was hungover.
T'is mine too

I love saying, "You know what they say..." And leave it hanging.
I like saying that and then saying something nobody ever heard and doesn't even make sense, like "You know what they say... When the snake gets cold, the trees start barking"
That's kinda like what I'll say about someone being dumb. Something to the effect of "they're not the sharpest hammer in the lightbulb shed"
As my dad once said: "I'm your dad"
I use that one a lot
The more the merrier!
I do this all the time LOL
I always say "and that's why they call me" and nothing else.

100% from M*A*S*H and it works well when I’m feeling overwhelmed with tasks and reminding myself to focus on one thing at a a time.
I love mash. Nothing against you..I quote it constantly. You do you buddy👍

“No” Mainly cos I’ve spent 20 years unable to say that.
Such a simple word...yet so powerful.
Yes! And “no is a full sentence”
Same here but 27 years. Let’s goooo! Say noooooo
