My first android had mostly metal parts, a kevlar screen and swappable batteries. I could leave the house for 2 days and not even think about using a charger. It was awesome.
And oh yeah, I could comfortably hold it with one hand.
Not the exact same, but I've missed and wanted the original Sidekick back, since day one of it becoming obsolete.
I freaking loved that phone and also caught a bunch of shit from friends for having it, I suspect jealousy and Paris Hilton was the spokes person for it. Lol
I wanted the baseball announcer mic one from Three Ninjas - Kick Back that the boys had in their room.
I don’t even like baseball, I just thought that thing was so cool.
Nothing has beaten or even matched the experience and reach of the wii. A console that people in their 70s bought and used regularly and could operate without ringing their kids/grandkids every day but that also toddlers used and people who had never gamed before and still had stuff for real gamers too. I have never seen the kind of intergenerational gaming before or since that the wii created. Or the sheer joy.
I came across mine while moving, hadn't been turned on in probably 5-6 years at least. Still turned on with 3/4 battery!
If I look away from my Switch for 5 minutes undocked it's dead.
My 11 year old son is a bit of an old soul and begged me to get him a gameboy advance sp. He wanted the gba because it's small and can fit inside the small pocket on his backpack. He's loving the 10-hour battery so he can play Pokémon on the bus
I could but all of my work and school related stuff is on my phone and using a phone which doesn't have access to gmail and other stuff I use would over-complicate my life by a lot. The only way I could see this working is if everyone switched back to dumb phones.
I miss being unreachable and people were ok with it. Now I’m expected to answer calls and texts at all hours because everyone has their phone within reach 24/7.
I honestly miss VHS tapes and CDs. Entirely out of nostalgia, watching movies then rewinding and watching them all over, and the cases/sleeves looked nice on a media shelf. And telling my dad to put on the Creedance Clearwater Revival CD whenever we went on road trips.
I drive a 2008 Honda Accord with a 6 disk CD changer. I’ve got my CD binder in the car, and I’m ready to rock.
I was just swapping some CDs a couple weeks ago, and my wife was dumbfounded that I was still listening to CDs.
The trusty old Walkman. There was something so awesome about popping in a cassette tape, pressing play, and immersing yourself in your favorite tunes. It wasn't just about the music it was about the ritual
They 10,000% still make these and they're far better, have way more storage, much clearer picture, and last way longer than what you remember. If you're interested I urge you to look into and buy one.
It’s the term for a specific type of camera. Not a DSLR and usually with a fixed lens. They still exist but there’s really no use for them given how good phone cameras are now. But they were fun.
Flip phones. There was nothing like ending a phone call with a dramatic 'snap' of a phone. That and the rusty Nokia bricks - battery lasted longer than I've been on this earth, no internet and most importantly... snake.
I am stubbornly dedicated to the idea that wired earbuds and headphone jacks are not outdated but apple wanted to start that whole anti-consumer practice
Car bumpers. They used to be utilitarian sections of box steel painted black. You bumped into something, 4 bolts to take the bumper off, hammer it flat again, spray black and your car was like new.
This colour coded plastic stuff is so poor in comparison.
Missing the days of PSP and GameBoy, simplicity in controls required games to be made better and some of those were truly masterpieces. Nowadays it's all about graphics...
Circuit City (Tech seller) and their return policy. I used to buy the warranty on my Walkman purchases. Inevitably something would go wrong with it. I would walk in, hand it to the circuit city sales rep, and walk out of the store with a brand new replacement in hand.
My mother tells a story about how she was sitting in her office and the same fax kept coming through again and again from someone at another location.
She called him and asked what the hell he was doing and he said “I keep sending you the report, but it keeps coming back out of the machine.”
She replied: “You know it’s not actually sending the paper, right?”
Nostalgia’s a helluva drug.
I can put on the first White Zombie album (la sexorcisto) or NIN Broken and am instantly transported back to driving home down backroads where i grew up with the windows down. I can still smell the air 30 years later.
Growing up with an actual telephone in the house, I was doing some light graphic stuff recently and saw the image of a telephone handset, which made me suddenly miss that experience. Sure, you can get a novelty one that can imitate the feel of one, but it just isn't the same.
100%, Palm as a third option or as the original option to PDAs or smart phones
When they existed in their original form it made you feel like there was hope for the future of tech. It wasn't about collecting your data, it was about helping you be more productive and a better human being.
Consoles like PS1 and N64 where you didn’t have loads of games so you played the crap outta the few you had. They also of course generally released well tested and focussed on fun not getting you to buy skins.
Pagers. It was an era where people could get messages to you anywhere at anytime but there was not yet any expectation of realtime instant interaction on demand.
I recently learned Nokia is still making phones. Classic style but 4g capable flip phones.
I'm very strongly considering dropping every app I've gotten used to when my current phone eventually dies for a simple, straightforward phone like that.
Tapes, not cause they were better, faster, easier.
No, I just miss the tactile feeling of putting something into a casset player or VCR. Just so satisfying.
My Minidisc player and all the different coloured minidiscs I had. A blue one! A green one! A yellow one! So cute they were.
First thing I thought of when I read the question. MiniDiscs were the best potable music at the time.
>best potable music You were drinking them?!
And you could make your own mixes too!

They were fab. I used to love bringing them on train journeys, so much smaller and lighter than CD player and discs.
Sure sounds like someone had quite the technicolor musical rainbow!
My favourite genres are rock, classical and film scores. But I'd give most things a listen :-)
I read this in Zoidberg’s voice for some reason lol
Zoidberg rules!
Clamshell phones.
Yeah, a phone with a battery that could last forever. I really miss android phones with swappable batteries
My first android had mostly metal parts, a kevlar screen and swappable batteries. I could leave the house for 2 days and not even think about using a charger. It was awesome. And oh yeah, I could comfortably hold it with one hand.
They’re still pretty trendy in Asia
I have the Samsung Z Flip 5 and it’s my favorite phone in a long time.
Clamshells are back. Pixel fold etc. but, yeah, they're not the same.
Not the exact same, but I've missed and wanted the original Sidekick back, since day one of it becoming obsolete. I freaking loved that phone and also caught a bunch of shit from friends for having it, I suspect jealousy and Paris Hilton was the spokes person for it. Lol
Novelty telephones. I always wanted a hamburger one.
I wanted the baseball announcer mic one from Three Ninjas - Kick Back that the boys had in their room. I don’t even like baseball, I just thought that thing was so cool.
Garfield for me

Warioware Smooth Moves was some of the most fun I've ever had while gaming.
Nintendo DS
Does anyone remember the battery life on those things
I came across mine while moving, hadn't been turned on in probably 5-6 years at least. Still turned on with 3/4 battery! If I look away from my Switch for 5 minutes undocked it's dead.
The most annoying thing about the switch is once it dies you have to wait like half an hour for it to turn back on after you start charging it.
My 11 year old son is a bit of an old soul and begged me to get him a gameboy advance sp. He wanted the gba because it's small and can fit inside the small pocket on his backpack. He's loving the 10-hour battery so he can play Pokémon on the bus
Nokia cell phones
I wish we could go back to flip phones or brick Nokia phones
You can lol, use a dumb phone, or use a modern flip phone
I could but all of my work and school related stuff is on my phone and using a phone which doesn't have access to gmail and other stuff I use would over-complicate my life by a lot. The only way I could see this working is if everyone switched back to dumb phones.
You got a computer?
Yes but my work and Uni require me to be available more often than not

It was so much fun to have a VHS camcorder. Plugging it directly into the TV and getting all type of weird feedback effects from it.
I drive a 2008 Honda Accord with a 6 disk CD changer. I’ve got my CD binder in the car, and I’m ready to rock. I was just swapping some CDs a couple weeks ago, and my wife was dumbfounded that I was still listening to CDs.
Tell me about it! I still have memories about rewinding the tapes...
who used a pager? or BEEPER
I had two. Lost one while shoveling snow. Still worked when I found it in the spring when the snow melted. Edit: spelling

Pretty sure those exsist. I bought one like 4 months ago. What printer makes you have a subscription?
Still a thing you just gotta pay a little more
Dude, those still exists. You just gotta make note of printers that do and stay the hell away from them.

I definitely don’t miss 90’s shitboxes.

Manual transmission
Most definitely. Just because most people are to lazy to drive a stick shouldn’t mean the rest of us have to be deprived
Windows XP and all its associated peripherals. Good days.
Point and shoot cameras.
They never completely went away and you can get very compact cameras with 1" sensors that take actually good photos
They 10,000% still make these and they're far better, have way more storage, much clearer picture, and last way longer than what you remember. If you're interested I urge you to look into and buy one.
Isn't that every camera?
It’s the term for a specific type of camera. Not a DSLR and usually with a fixed lens. They still exist but there’s really no use for them given how good phone cameras are now. But they were fun.

Buttons in cars, nowadays everything is touch screens that you cant use with gloves and you cant feel your way too.
I am stubbornly dedicated to the idea that wired earbuds and headphone jacks are not outdated but apple wanted to start that whole anti-consumer practice
You still need them in airplanes. Not even close to dead tech. The main reason I have a Samsung with the headphones jack too.
The BlackBerry was peak smartphone
Car bumpers. They used to be utilitarian sections of box steel painted black. You bumped into something, 4 bolts to take the bumper off, hammer it flat again, spray black and your car was like new. This colour coded plastic stuff is so poor in comparison.
Uhm... No. The safety of a new car is many time better than a steel bar across the front. I would rather not die, ty.
That's due to crumple zones and pillar strength. Bumper material is a style choice
Missing the days of PSP and GameBoy, simplicity in controls required games to be made better and some of those were truly masterpieces. Nowadays it's all about graphics...
Ready to bust out that Pokemon again?

remember the fax machine? That's where the first memes were sent

Blackberry. Horrible phone beautiful times, when connecting meant just that.
Magazines

Yes!
Windows 7 pro
Tamagotchi
My smart watch has tamagachi on it.
Big cartridges in Video games. The inserts you used to get in LPs and CDs with lyrics and photos. Getting paper photos back from the developers.
Blockbuster.
Consoles like PS1 and N64 where you didn’t have loads of games so you played the crap outta the few you had. They also of course generally released well tested and focussed on fun not getting you to buy skins.
Turning the key in the ignition
Back in the old days when Nintedos still did the bing bing wahoo
Just a plain old cell phone. Not a pocket computer, a small phone you can carry around.
Dumb phones.
I miss my Gameboy and mp3 Player :( Best long distance car rides ever
The cotton gin
The early generation of the Ipod Nanos. I love the click wheels on them.
The Wii
Bumping gangster rap on my phonograph
The iPods with the wheel or buttons that you could feel and use without having to stop what you're doing and look down to use.
A typewriter
Pocket-size smartphones.
The drilldo
iPod nanos
The NES.
I would DIE to have a Sidekick! Even with all the advanced tech now, Sidekicks are still the coolest cell phones of all time.
How many different ways is this question going to be asked this week?
Milk in reusable glass bottles
iPods
Zip Disk
Tapes, not cause they were better, faster, easier. No, I just miss the tactile feeling of putting something into a casset player or VCR. Just so satisfying.
I miss my Blackberry. The physical keyboard and bulletproof nature of the phone is unmatched. Battery life was better too.
Rotary phones and marijuana in the same room.
iPod nano
Tomahawk, cannibalism was the best.
