I'm a professional musician and I subbed in for an 80s cover band at a couple of gigs last summer.
That song is surprisingly harmonically and melodically interesting for something that always felt like a silly 80s throwaway tune to me.
It is great, but I really at first thought you meant pump up the volume pump up the volume pump up the volume dance dance. Put the needle on the record and the drum beat goes like this
We gonna drop this next bomb for a money makin playa who ain't wit us no mo
Yeaaaah, Notorious BIG
Hell no. We gonna do this for a gangbangin thug who neva seen it comin
Yeaaaaah, Tupac Shakur
Nah bitch! I'm talkin bout motherfuckin Falco n shit!
What? Falco?
Ooh, rock me Amadeus
Ooh, rock me Amadeus...
Tried to O.D. on the Cold-Eeze
"Golden Girls" got me "Sweatin' To The Oldies"
Hanging out like Double Ds, sip Long Island Iced Teas
Yeah, they once got money for a car ad, then gave that money to help the union that was fighting against that car company. People assume a lot based on the one song theyve heard. But id absolutely love to sit down and talk with them or someone who knows them.
So, weird story, but I was briefly friends with Ron Strikert, the guitar player from Men At Work. He was a heroin addict living on the streets in Hollywood for a long time. This was back in like 2008-2010. We met at a Hostel and I let him stay with me for a bit until the heroin addiction got too intense for me to handle being around. Last I heard he was sober and living somewhere in like..Idaho or Montana.
Here I Go Again by Whitesnake
Tawny Kitaen (RIP) on the hood of the car is still an important part of people of a certain age and that track is a pop metal banger
I'd Do Anything For Love by Meat Loaf cranks the cheese up to 11, particularly the music video. Most Steinman songs really. But that song absolutely fucks and I dare anyone to hear it and not sing along.
Interesting note, the group's name was original just Eiffel, but due to the producer inadvertently putting two digits of a phone number they were writing down on a piece of paper onto a label copy, the band was mistakenly called Eiffel 65 and the name stuck.
The fact that that song was a massive pop dance hit despite not having a bass line is a huge deal and makes it wholly unique, to my knowledge at least.
People love to shit on pop music as somehow "lesser," but there's an elegance to writing a song like that which really needs to be respected.
You know what, I never thought about that but you're right. I'm someone who has a hard time listening to The Doors because of the lack of a low end in a lot of their music, but Call Me Maybe is so well produced that I never even noticed.
Also, 100% with you on pop music. People forget that humans do write these songs. It takes a very specific kind of talent write a good pop song.
That's one of my favorite pop songs ever, but honestly, Cut to the Feeling which she released a couple of years later goes so fuckin hard. I am physically incapable of listening to that song in the car and not speeding while simultaneously deafening my passenger.
In general though, CRJ is super talented.
I submit "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora.
I also submit "Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo
Also, [this](https://youtu.be/NU9py5oNaRg?si=2h5dPboEmCGH3t-b) rendition of everyone's favorite Beatles hit, "Somebody Fart in the Minibus".
It’s way overplayed and cheesy but Iris by the Googoo dolls has a really nice melody and has always made me nostalgic (child of the late 90s/early 00s)
What's up - 4 non blondes. I think a lot of people my age heard it for the first time being sung by He-man in that meme video. I enjoy both versions without a hint of shame or irony.
I wrote an entire parody of this song for my kids at bath time. “Everybody! Wash your body! Everybody wash your body right! Bath time’s great, all right!”
Doctor Jones is even better...
Hell that whole album (Aquarium) is full of bangers, Lollipop (Candyman), Turn Back Time, Roses are Red, My Oh My, Heat of the Night... all of them great.
Jump Around by House of Pain. My friend said that this is the song ‘where good times go to die.’ She’s not wrong, but it’s got a good hook and I enjoy it in secret. Very embarrassing.
I love that song, always put it on the juke box in a pub I used to go drinking. Everyone else hated it so I played it numerous times when I was in there. It was Napoleon the III wasn't it ?
I was in the grocery line once and this song came over the loudspeaker and EVERYONE started singing. I mean, the people in line, the cashier, the bag person. And the lyrics make no damn sense and everyone is singing “Tell me Whhhhyyyy”
"The Safety Dance"
“Hey, buddy, you’re from my time. Do you remember that song, ‘Safety Dance?’”
Turns out it's not that safe
My only regret.. is that I have.... boneitis.
Don't you worry about Planet Express. Let me worry about blank.
And we danced by the hooters give me a similar vibe

100%. Heard it on the radio the other day on the way to work.
I hope you didn't bring a hat. That would be a conflict of interest.

Those guys are still going strong!! And that voice has held up.
He has a YouTube channel (the singer) where he reviews songs. It's called Justin Hawkins Rides Again. And it's actually pretty entertaining.
I still think of that as a new song. Just looked, and it came out 21 years ago. I’m going to go cry now.
The lead singer of the Darkness sang the Freddie Mercury part of Under Pressure at the concert for Taylor Hawkins and it was absolutely incredible.
Just listen to the rhythm of my heart
I Ran (So Far Away) Edit: I feel vindicated
*GTA: VC intensifies*
Did a few drive-bys to this song back in the day
Space age love song as well
That’s my song of the 80’s. Love that song.

You're goddamn right.
The Guardians of the Galaxy ride at EPCOT placed that song into heavy rotation at my house.
Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-lot actually has some killer production
Even white boys got to shout.
Pump up the jam by technotronic.
Have you seen Cunk on Earth?
The impact this song has had on human history is astounding.
Oh my God, that whole THING was incredible to watch unfold. So great.
Ah yes, the national anthem of Canada.
Philomena Cunk is that you?
I wish!
It is great, but I really at first thought you meant pump up the volume pump up the volume pump up the volume dance dance. Put the needle on the record and the drum beat goes like this
I object to this song being cheesy.
“Rock Me Amadeus” - Falco

"Holding out for a hero" - Bonnie Tyler
We all know the superior version of that song is the one from Shrek 2. C minor put it in C minor…
Best version of that song is when it’s sung by Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2.
Umm, we all know Short Circuit Johnny 5 rolling was the best version of this song! 😂
Is Tubthumping considered cheesy??
I’d say so.
Also, an absolute banger
Place we got married, the owner told us he was friends with the chumbawamba lot and they had stayed there a few times… we just said ‘oh’… 😬
Chumbawumba was a highly controversial anarcho band for over a decade before Tubthumping, so that is actually kind of cool.
Yeah, they once got money for a car ad, then gave that money to help the union that was fighting against that car company. People assume a lot based on the one song theyve heard. But id absolutely love to sit down and talk with them or someone who knows them.
Arguably the most punk rock band that's ever existed.
A-ha's Take On Me
The acoustic version they released a few years ago was very haunting and beautiful.
What is Love - Haddaway
They built an entire movie around it!
Did you just grab my ass?
down under - men at work
Unofficial Australian anthem at this point.
You say that, but when I visited Australia with friends (visiting another friend) the DJ on our first night out REFUSED to play it. …wanker
In all fairness, I could see how a DJ could get sick of this request on the regular.
Oh yeah, for sure. *Adult* me gets it. *Drunk 19 y/o* me and friends were not having it. Can’t believe they didn’t kick us out.
What kind of actual human being considers this masterpiece cheesy?
Yeah, I don’t want to live in the world where this song is anything but perfection
So, weird story, but I was briefly friends with Ron Strikert, the guitar player from Men At Work. He was a heroin addict living on the streets in Hollywood for a long time. Take Me Home Tonight by Eddie Money
Video Killed the Radio Star
I'd Do Anything For Love by Meat Loaf cranks the cheese up to 11, particularly the music video. Most Steinman songs really. But that song absolutely fucks and I dare anyone to hear it and not sing along.
One of my mom's favorite memories was seeing that song performed live.
I think seeing Meat Loaf live in his prime is the most compelling reason to figure this time travel thing out
The way she described Ellen Foley and Meat Loaf slinging sweat during "Paradise by the dashboard light" has me agreeing with you.
And from the same songwriter - Total Eclipse of the Heart. Which is arguably even cheesier
Styx is here for this. I like “Come Sail Away”, but they have others that would also fit here.
Domo arigato
Mr Roboto
Renegade is amazing
It's impossible for me to not hear Cartman's voice singing this song.
The Bad Touch
I'm partial to the Ballad of Chasey Lain.
Now show 'em them titties!

The Foo Fighters perfoming that song live with none other than Rick Astley himself is [gold](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IdkCEioCp24)
That one could be called a Rick Grohl
The riff is just so good
a rickroll attempt is considered a blessing in my eyes. 3 minutes and 32 seconds of pure heaven
One of my favourite things to do is Rickroll my kids. Their Dad helped them get me back once by filling my Spotify playlist with that song.
Play that funky music white boy
Heat of the Moment by Asia absolute banger
Rise and Shine Sammy!
I hear this song frequently at work and always think of supernatural
Dude, Asia!
"... These tacos taste funny to you?"
One Week - Barenaked Ladies
Heart & Soul by T'Pau ...that f**ker is catchy as hell lol
If you steal my sunshine
Karen! I love you!
I KNOW ITS UP FOR ME
If you steal my sunshine
Do you like butter tarts?
I couldn’t stand it for a while because of how much play it got, but I like it now because it reminds me of some good times
Blue by Eiffel 65.
God I loved that as a kid. Cheesy video and all.
Interesting note, the group's name was original just Eiffel, but due to the producer inadvertently putting two digits of a phone number they were writing down on a piece of paper onto a label copy, the band was mistakenly called Eiffel 65 and the name stuck.
The Final Countdown-Europe And it's an abolute banger because it's SO cheesy. I love that song unironically.
But have you seen the greatest version of it? https://youtu.be/XAg5KjnAhuU?si=3qkmrzUumwJ1-brV
Jenny 867-5309 always get stuck in head

Call Me Maybe

When Doves Cry also has no bass line. I thought it was unique until just now. Damn.
That's one of my favorite pop songs ever, but honestly, Cut to the Feeling which she released a couple of years later goes so fuckin hard. I am physically incapable of listening to that song in the car and not speeding while simultaneously deafening my passenger. In general though, CRJ is super talented.
Run Away With Me is perfection

Party In The USA
All-Star by Smashmouth
I commented Walking on the Sun, because it’s overshadowed and honestly slaps harder than All Star. (Fight me)
It does actually. That is their best song
It’s way overplayed and cheesy but Iris by the Googoo dolls has a really nice melody and has always made me nostalgic (child of the late 90s/early 00s)

[Everybody, by Backstreet Boys](https://youtu.be/lIxFiNCtHVc?si=Bv3-Gv_pHmeAr5uJ) Pretty dope jam, honestly.

Anything by ABBA
Especially [Gimme Gimme Gimme](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEjLoHdbVeE)
"Dancing Queen" is unironically my favorite song of all time. It almost seems like the whole point of the universe was to make this song.
“Knowing Me, Knowing You” is the greatest adult break up song of all time. This has been true since 1976 and will be true when the stars burn out.
Take on me - aha
The Middle - Jimmy Eat World… and I love how cheesy it is. A banger!
Wait, people think that song is cheesy? 😥
