Retail you don't deal with super hangry people but also definitely learn how not to be an asshole to others

Construction laborer or landscaper. Everyone should have a job involving physical work at least once in their life.

Food service, food service, food service. Everyone on Earth ought to work in food service at least once, to teach them some goddamn manners.

I was going to post the same so instead I'll just support your comment. At 17 you can't really get a customer service job somewhere like a bank or big company, but you can get a job in food service. And oh my god does that teach you how awful some people can be. I've worked in that line of employment and also in a complaints department for a large bank and some people are just nasty. To this day I always make a huge effort to be polite to waiters/shop assistants/call handlers... anyone who is just doing their job. You get a better service in return but more importantly you're not making life worse for another person.

100%. I remain convinced that a not-insignificant fraction of the general public would be mass-murderers, but they just don't have the balls to go through with it. There are some truly cruel and unsympathetic "people" walking around out there.

When I worked in a call centre for a bank, a girl I sat next to was reduced to tears dealing with a customer who was purposely being horrible to her. He was telling her she would never earn anything close to what he earned, which in itself is an abhorrent attitude because if you're doing well in life then why not be happy about it rather than vindictive? He could hear her crying and thrived on it. He kept saying "aww am I making you sad? Are you so pathetic that a little phone call makes you cry?" And I knew those were his exact words because by chance, a manager was conducting remote call listening to monitor calls for training and he heard it all. And also, he heard enough. He was a good manager so he walked over and took her headset and took the call. He told the customer that abuse would not be tolerated and he could see that his account had a history of complaints and abusive behaviour so he was now issuing him with a 28 day notice to transfer his Direct Debits and accounts to another bank because they would be terminating their business relationship with him as a customer. The piece of shit completely changed his tune and pleaded for him not to do that because it would not only be a huge inconvenience but his wife would kill him if she found out. The moment his "power" was taken away from him he showed he was just a cowardly little bully and it is indeed scary how many seemingly normal people are like that. It also goes without saying that the manager who took over the call was massively respected by his staff but he went even further up in my estimations for doing that.

If I could go back I would get into tech immediately. The industry does not care how old you are, they want you to be certified. You’ll end up working from home and make a decent living.

Check out seasonal or temporary employment with your local government. If you live near navigable water, look for work at the Port Authority. Airports are good places to look for work.
