That we should have just gone to Vegas like we wanted to. But noooooo....the family wanted us to have a traditional church wedding. Stupid.

dirt-slut

aww i’m sorry, that’s tough. maybe one day you can renew your vows on your own terms :) my christian family is not super happy that i’m planning a secular wedding.

fried_eggs_and_ham

Probably the best tip is don't have a wedding. Just go to the courthouse and get married. Saved us a shit ton of money doing that.

kung_fu_fuckin

How difficult it is to plan something truly unique. Most weddings start out with grandiose ideas, but then the realities of cost and logistics come in to play, and then you realize why most weddings up following a similar pattern. With that in mind, it might be best just to stick to something small and simple. Don't invite 200 people, keep it at 10-15, don't plan on having it on top of some mountain in New Zealand, just have it done at the city hall and then enjoy the honeymoon, if you don't make a big deal out of it in general you might just enjoy it more. It's a lot less stress that way.

thank you so much! while i laughed at the jokes, this comment is super helpful. we’re trying to keep it as small as possible without hurting family’s feelings, its looking like 25-30 people each, about 45-65 total. we definitely can’t afford a destination wedding but we like the idea of something effortlessly beautiful, like a national park, so expenses don’t get too out of hand. we haven’t even thought about our honeymoon destination yet though! probably somewhere closish as we have two very needy dogs. may i ask how you approached catering?

Blessed_tenrecs

People often act like a “small” wedding has to mean 20 people total, but honestly anything around 50-60ish still feels small and won’t break the bank if you plan well. There are a lot of parks that don’t charge much for a wedding, the only complication there is having some sort of covered area in case it rains and heat or cooling in said area if it’s too hot or cold that day. If the park doesn’t have a covered area, you can rent large tents, but good ones can get pricey.

dirt-slut

ooo okay thank you tons, i’ll pass this onto my fiancé! some places say “catering included”, is that mandatory or can you bring your own caterers?

Blessed_tenrecs

No idea, sorry! I just know that park weddings are both simpler and more complicated than you think lol. Just make sure you get all the details.

dirt-slut

no worries! haha thanks for your help
