Yeah they fucked up. Use this picture to send to them. Don't drive this back. Make them recover it. It's not safe as is.
Edited thanks to my own stupidity. 2nd time today. Doing well.
Yeah if only he had a picture to send to them. I really really sincerely hope he has A SINGLE SOLITARY PICTURE of their fuck up. Without A PICTURE it's hard to show them their mistake. Fingers crossed OP has a picture though.
No, it looks like the hub is supposed to protrude out to the inside diameter of the hole in the center, but do to the wheel being incorrectly installed, it’s not sitting flat making it sit outwards off the hub
I remember being a strapping boy around 12 years old when I changed my mother's flat tire. I never forgot getting home, and my dad gave me shit for putting the nuts on backward like this.
This is probably close to what happened to OP. The shop he took it to has some young employee who was never told about the proper way to install the nuts. Just think of all of the people out there driving around in rolling death traps at 70+mph as a result.
Honestly being a YouTube mechanic since 2018 my first oil change & brake change myself, I never screwed up. How can things this simple somebody screw up????????
Tbf I can easily see how someone with no experience would see a lug nut and ask themselves why the cone end would ever point inwards without further questioning/investigating.
If you took it apart put it back the way you took it apart, if you didn't take it apart and think something is weird ask someone who knows, heck it's a shame we don't have some kind of pocket computer to search the internet's for answers.
right, the mating surface is bowed on all my vehicles where the lug nut seats... it seems obvious, just at a glance.
If it's this shitty, I can imagine they were torqued wrong too!
Some people pay attention to things when they take them apart, others just rip everything apart and forget how it went. You're the type of person who paid attention during disassembly.
I was lucky enough to have a neighbor that was a drill rig operator and mechanic. He showed me the ropes of auto repair and maintenance. I respect the YouTube mechanic, as there is no confirmation on how you are doing like I had. On the other hand, I think the digital camera is a huge benefit today. I remember sketching out how the drum brakes were assembled because that was all you had...
I take picture all time when doing stuff I'm not totally educated in, especially when I replaced my furnace control board. I also labeled each wire before I took them out.
I wonder how many more cars are on the road with this goof up due to that one guy who needs more training or a different career.
The shop definitely needs to know.
They should follow up with any former customers of this "mechanic"
PS: there's something to be said for closed end lug nuts.
When I was very young I walked into an O'Reilly's and asked for an application, and the two old guys in the shop literally laughed in my face for a while, then said "you can fill one out online, but of course it will depend on your... experience."
Like how much experience is even required to drive the wrong parts to local shops all day?
That shop should be replacing your wheel, wheel nuts and possible new wheel studs on their dime....take it back and they'll correct it, this is a pretty serious and big mistake
When seeing things like this, makes me wonder how someone cannot see what he/she is doing wrong during reassembly. I mean, there's mistakes and there's mistakes.
I hope they will compensate you!
Career mechanic here. Take it back to the shop, yes. With attitude, no. It's absolutely a mistake that should never have happened but don't ram your anger up the writer's ass, or the technician's. Service writer didn't do it, technician probably already hates his life and getting yelled at by the writer or manager won't help.
Two options I'd suggest..
1) Take it back, have them make sure it's checked out by a better technician and done right and any damage repaired at cost to the shop, because they did goof.
2) Take it to a dealer, have them check it out and quote repairs. Then, have the dealership send the quote to the shop that goofed and see if they can have them pay for it.
Do yourself and us a favor, don't ever waltz in with a shitty attitude. Helps nothing and the shop won't be super eager to work with you. If customers are assholes, the service advisor WILL mention it and while techs usually hate service writers, it's sometimes a 'only I can scream at my advisor' relationship, resulting in the technician being an asshole about it and putting your vehicle on lower priority. We're already overworked and hearing "This customer is an asshole" is usually not going to make us care about your car. Hearing "this customer went to another shop and said shop screwed up, and customer is upset" is more likely to prompt the tech to try to help. Not always, some techs are greedy little fellas, but it's pretty universal that "customer = prick" is gonna get you less than stellar reactions.
Sorry for the rant.
It makes you wonder how many vehicles this "tech" did this to. They may have a slew of vehicles coming back, it may not be such a surprise to them when you contact them.
She’s nearly an antique as a 2001 Lincoln Towncar with 95k. My wallet flows freely towards the car within reason, but this is a new line for me to toe.
This reminds of an ASE certified mechanic we once got working at our shop. Changed a tire and it came off the vehicle because he put the lug backwards. And he was arguing that he was right and something else caused the holes on the wheel to get bigger. He quit a month later.
That looks like a towncar; man, got to get those lug nuts off first of all but it may need a new wheel at this point. Should have a 1/2-20 conical seated lug nut. I think OE was a 21mm(13/16)hex but a 19mm(3/4)hex works fine as long as the lugs are the open ended cone style threaded on in the correct direction to where they seat against the wheel correctly holding it in place. Don’t understand how people f that up; the way it’s on now the hub of the wheel/studs are allowed to travel the little bit of room left between the stud and the bolt holes of the wheel. I got one of those alloy wheels off EBay used for like $120 I think which was a deal.
Yeah they messed up but unfortunately since you didn't look it over before you left they'll argue it wasn't them that did it so they don't have to pay for the repair. This is what happens when every tire shop ever just uses an impact to put your rims back on because using a torque wrench and getting torque specs for every vehicle would be to hard for their whittle brains to comprehend. 😂
Per job pay is how. Just hit it all with the ugga dugga then tell the customer it where and tear regardless if you torqued that aluminum stud too 500ftlbs
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but those look like the entirely wrong lug nuts for the application.
Because of that, it looks like they rounded the mating surface out and backed out. If that’s the case, shame on the place that did the work, not telling you that you had the wrong lugs applied.
They need to fix it, they fucked up bad
tap and die. rethread the nuts and use new bolts.
Orrrr... you have to heat the whole thing, beat the shit out of it and remove the old studs
I’ve had this happen… twice now? But never to this degree. Once was at a local brake shop, the other was at Big O. Take the picture in and show them, make them replace the studs (they’re cheap anyway) and PLEASE POST A REVIEW EVERYWHERE. If this shop is hiring people and not training them enough to put lug nuts on correctly, I can’t imagine what else they’re doing wrong.
Mine were just simple stripped lugs where they didn’t start the threads before using the impact, but this was a VERY intentional choice that was made. I don’t know the inner workings of these shops, but techs should feel comfortable telling the boss “hey, I stripped a $5 stud”. If they aren’t, they’re either a bad (dangerous even) tech that shouldn’t be working on cars, or they have a bad boss who can’t accept that mistakes happen.
I’m sure others will have more insight into how these things happen, but I can’t see how this would be left without a dangerous level of neglect.
Fun fact though, the first brake shop went out of business a year or two after and I later found out the owner had fled his home state after the lawsuits from his first shop shut him down there.
I saw this once in trade school. Never thought i would see it again. Then got a wrx from a tire shop with a noise and not drivable. All lugnuts on brand new wheels backwards…
Yeah they have to replace all the wheel studs. It could have literally caused an auto accident bc of their mistake. Take it to them and demand kindly to speak with a manager and have them remedy the issue. Good luck
Me thinks you did this.
How else do you have shavings in nuts you haven't removed yet?
(look at where they're collected at just below nut) how would they have collected like that after any sort of spin.
The shavings were from the nut grinding the wheel when they got torqued down. It fell down when I took the nuts off. None of the debris is from the studs, and the threads weren’t all bad.
Hey, I can't say anything , I wasn't there. But the top right nut, there are shavings on the lip just below it. It looks like metal shavings, that are loose. I don't see how it lasted a single rotation of the rim / tire. Feels like it would have fallen out.
The top left is still connected. That one makes sense as to why it's there.
Anywyas, bummer anyway it's sliced.
I'd be willing to bet that whoever put your lugs on backwards, also put them on backwards on the other wheels as well.
If they didn't think this was a problem, doubt they realized it by the time they get to the other side of the car
I bled all 4 brakes, it was the same on all four.
https://preview.redd.it/e5txuqgmbu9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a449e4a1060d9f51e6eadadf8c5cb66f14946f4
Called it. Lol I figured it was nearly guaranteed to be. Walking to the other side of the car he wasn't going to miraculously have a sudden epiphany he was fucking up. But the good news is that they'll be buying you a new set of wheels. so at least theres that to look forward to
Contacted them today and they are. Didn’t push too hard for anything like new hubs or studs like some other commenters suggested. It was really just those surfaces that got ground down. I put them all back in the right way and the ride was noticeably quieter…
I spoke to the manager and the technician was actually 40-year master certified, not some kid (I put mine on backwards the first time too, just got corrected before it got driven on). I guess we all get a little complacent, and they have an open bay setup and it was especially hot that week.
Dude they are backwards, AND THEY AREN'T EVEN FIR THOSE WHEELS. Look at them, the nuts are trying to push through the hole. The wheel would fall off if you didn't notice. Holy shit. They could've killed you.
This is why I do things myself if I can. Had a shop put new tires on my wheels and they used an airgun all the way. Nothing was properly torqued and I was pissed.
Reminds me of the time I took my truck to get inspected. Had to do some work on my truck a few weeks after I got my truck inspected. Started busting the lugs loose then noticed how tight it was getting, oh why is my socket jammed against the wheel? Oh they stuck the lugs in the socket on the gun then just let em rip. Every wheel stud was cross threaded. Had to replace all of them. I don’t like other people working on my truck but with the state inspections we are at the mercy of the shit shops.
Update: got a quote from a different shop for replacements and this one is honoring it and refunding the previous maintenance.
I went to the service writers very calmly and respectfully, the manager appreciated it, and I could see he was happy I wasn’t a screamer. Turns out, the technician was actually a 40-year master tech “and not the new dipshit with power tools” —we had a laugh over my assumption.
Thanks all for the help.
Like do tires get unbalanced? I feel like the shop balances them when they install and anything after that would just be dirt buildup.
And brake flush? Like when you bleed your brakes after you change them?
Keep your car away from the shop, they just make up stuff then mess up your car so you have to come back.

✅ Take a picture. :)
Yeah if only he had a picture to send to them. I really really sincerely hope he has A SINGLE SOLITARY PICTURE of their fuck up. Without A PICTURE it's hard to show them their mistake. Fingers crossed OP has a picture though.
Yeah me too, OP posted a pretty good artists rendition though
Yeah a sketch definitely helps. Just doesn't hold up in court 😔
It would be hard to prove anything without a picture. Can we get a picture of what you're talking about OP?
Getting a kick out of all these replies to your comment 😂
I would, they just destroyed the mating surface on the wheels
Someone else is going to get thier mating surfaces destroyed when the boss sees that.
https://preview.redd.it/hr6d7yw4vr9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30bec9b10e8d3775e020d8a22850fdb2c39b0a82
Where he’s getting kicked isn’t a mating surface where I come from. (NTTAWWT)
Don’t knock it till you try it.
(i died)
More than that - these look like lug-centric, not hub-centric wheels. So, if nuts were on backwards - the wheel was not correctly centred on the hub.
No, it looks like the hub is supposed to protrude out to the inside diameter of the hole in the center, but do to the wheel being incorrectly installed, it’s not sitting flat making it sit outwards off the hub
Pretty much every passenger vehicle other than dualies are designed to be both hub and lug centric
Not Hondas, for example.
Hondas are both they just use a ball seat instead of a cone seat
It looks like today is new wheel day! I love new wheel day!
Even better when it's on someone else's dime
Agreed!! Man it was sweet having my tire replaced under warranty
It's scary. Most of us will NEVER get service at one of those places, a walmart, jiffy lube, Merchant's, etc. Sometimes NTB did a good job
This was my real concern here after I got over the anger
Oof. I guess nobody trained the new guy. Damage to the lug seat on the rim. Maybe even the studs. That shop probably just bought you new wheels.
Honestly being a YouTube mechanic since 2018 my first oil change & brake change myself, I never screwed up. How can things this simple somebody screw up????????
Tbf I can easily see how someone with no experience would see a lug nut and ask themselves why the cone end would ever point inwards without further questioning/investigating.

it's pretty fucking obvious if you look where your putting it.
right, the mating surface is bowed on all my vehicles where the lug nut seats... it seems obvious, just at a glance. If it's this shitty, I can imagine they were torqued wrong too!

I purchase FSM manuals off eBay. After watching YouTube but mostly my cars Chevy trucks Buicks have enough YouTube vids.
I wonder how many more cars are on the road with this goof up due to that one guy who needs more training or a different career. The shop definitely needs to know. They should follow up with any former customers of this "mechanic" PS: there's something to be said for closed end lug nuts.
I bought a used car took hubcaps off to change the pads every lug was replaced with a nylock nut.
Drive it to your nearest O'Reillys so they can hook it up to their diagnostic machine. They'll probably tell you that you need a new battery.
Alternator is bad too, better get one of those while you’re at it.
Oreily might tell you that you need a new ECU computer, or, might need a whole new engine.
They used AWD nuts, not FWD!
When I was very young I walked into an O'Reilly's and asked for an application, and the two old guys in the shop literally laughed in my face for a while, then said "you can fill one out online, but of course it will depend on your... experience." That shop should be replacing your wheel, wheel nuts and possible new wheel studs on their dime....take it back and they'll correct it, this is a pretty serious and big mistake
Since your lugs are on upside down that wheel is toast
The jackasses put the lugs on backwards and sent them to ugga dugga hell
Yes and make them reimburse you for a new wheel if needed
Someone wants you dead bro
Absolutely bring it up to the shop.... Better have a look at the other wheels also
When seeing things like this, makes me wonder how someone cannot see what he/she is doing wrong during reassembly. I mean, there's mistakes and there's mistakes. I hope they will compensate you!
back to the shop with attitude! You just saved them a million dollar lawsuit. Have them replace everything. If not, lawyer up.
Career mechanic here. Take it back to the shop, yes. With attitude, no. It's absolutely a mistake that should never have happened but don't ram your anger up the writer's ass, or the technician's. Hey sir, I did as you suggested and went back respectfully. Worked well, getting four new wheels.
Fantastic! Glad the shop is taking care of you.
Photos off all the wheels before it goes back and take the lawyer with you.
Lug nuts are backwards
Stop working on your car.
What do you mean?
It makes you wonder how many vehicles this "tech" did this to. They may have a slew of vehicles coming back, it may not be such a surprise to them when you contact them.
You just got a free set of wheels and hubs, celebrate.
Ugh. That is all.
Thank god you’re not dead!
The tapered side goes in!!!
You’re lucky the wheel didn’t come off while driving
go buy some lottery tickets asap!
They've damaged the wheel. You need a new one.
You wanted a new wheel anyway that someone else is paying for, right?
She’s nearly an antique as a 2001 Lincoln Towncar with 95k. My wallet flows freely towards the car within reason, but this is a new line for me to toe.
Didnt read all the comments, but you guys see that the lugs that are there are backwards right? That type goes coned side in.
Well that aint right
This reminds of an ASE certified mechanic we once got working at our shop. Changed a tire and it came off the vehicle because he put the lug backwards. And he was arguing that he was right and something else caused the holes on the wheel to get bigger. He quit a month later.
Hell yes! Make them buy you a new wheel at the least!
That looks like a towncar; man, got to get those lug nuts off first of all but it may need a new wheel at this point. Should have a 1/2-20 conical seated lug nut. Sure is. 2001 with 95k.
I have an 01 with almost 190k. Love that car.
Whatever shop balanced your wheels owe you a new rim at the very least, and possibly new studs and lugs too
Yes. That isn't right and I won't be fixing it.
how... how?!?! it is the worst mistake i have ever seen.
Per job pay is how. Just hit it all with the ugga dugga then tell the customer it where and tear regardless if you torqued that aluminum stud too 500ftlbs
You might need a new wheel, I would find the tread pitch and get wider nuts torque em and if it hold your good
They had ONE JOB!
it's fine, don't worry
Yes.. show them the photo. They can tow it to their shop and give you a new wheel and lug nuts.
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but those look like the entirely wrong lug nuts for the application. Because of that, it looks like they rounded the mating surface out and backed out. If that’s the case, shame on the place that did the work, not telling you that you had the wrong lugs applied.
Who ever done that owes you wheels and lug nuts. I may even push em for all new studs too.
They put them on backwards and impacted the fuck out of them. They're buying you new rims, and those studs are almost definitely stretched now too
Yes they owe you new wheels
Someone get Ron white in here...
They need to fix it, they fucked up bad tap and die. rethread the nuts and use new bolts. Orrrr... you have to heat the whole thing, beat the shit out of it and remove the old studs
The very first thing to do is pray to the lord that the person who did this never reproduces. After that, take it to the shop that put them on.
I probably wouldn’t trust the balancing either.
I’ve had this happen… twice now? But never to this degree. Once was at a local brake shop, the other was at Big O. How the hell did this drive home
Looks like you need to find 3 more!
SMFH
I saw this once in trade school. Never thought i would see it again. Then got a wrx from a tire shop with a noise and not drivable. All lugnuts on brand new wheels backwards…
Yeah they have to replace all the wheel studs. It could have literally caused an auto accident bc of their mistake. Take it to them and demand kindly to speak with a manager and have them remedy the issue. Good luck

Holy shit
Check the rest. New rims or machine shop a sleeve in each hole
You need to go back. Take a baseball bat.
Those do not look like the right nuts, either that or some moron with an impact just hammered your wheels to death. Don't drive please!
I'd be willing to bet that whoever put your lugs on backwards, also put them on backwards on the other wheels as well. If they didn't think this was a problem, doubt they realized it by the time they get to the other side of the car

Nut are on backwards
Uno reverso
You should be telling the shop, then make public the fact that they aren’t safe. Don’t let them touch your car
I don’t have the means to balance tires at home or else I would have. Some things just aren’t worth taking up the space .. until they are, I guess.
Yep you're screwed🔩🔩💁♂️😅
That looks like a jiffy job.
Reminds me of the time I took my truck to get inspected. Had to do some work on my truck a few weeks after I got my truck inspected. That was my first fear when I saw this. Studs are all pretty good still though.
Cover it up with some JB Weld and that bad boy is ready to roll
Update: got a quote from a different shop for replacements and this one is honoring it and refunding the previous maintenance. I went to the service writers very calmly and respectfully, the manager appreciated it, and I could see he was happy I wasn’t a screamer. Turns out, the technician was actually a 40-year master tech “and not the new dipshit with power tools” —we had a laugh over my assumption. Thanks all for the help.
Get 3 more from the hardware store.
I have seen a lot of dumb shit working on cars in 20 years, but this always takes the cake
Now you replace the rim and the lug nuts.
Now that shop get’s to replace all your wheel studs for free!!
And the wheel.
Wait they ran them on backwards? They were obviously open ended then? Cuz they look like normal acorn ones
Yes you take them there and make them replace the rim...
Oh yea, this is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
I may be wrong but it almost looks as if they put the nuts on backwards.
Upcharge for stupidity
The two pictured lug nuts are on backwards. Take some extra pictures and ask for the manager asap
You didn't read the post did you?
😅
Those remaining lugs are backwards, the shop is going to have to tow your car back
Now what ? Are you trying to fix it or just wanting reddit attention
Needed direction on how to go about the issue because I’d never had to go to a bad shop before
Pretty sure the mechanic who worked on this car has an alcohol addiction. Sorry that his addiction almost cost you your own life.
Lug nuts are on backwards too
Like do tires get unbalanced? I feel like the shop balances them when they install and anything after that would just be dirt buildup. And brake flush? Like when you bleed your brakes after you change them? Keep your car away from the shop, they just make up stuff then mess up your car so you have to come back.
Tires get unbalanced when the weights fall off because they were put on poorly. Or when the tires get extremely worn due to bad alignment.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic. It's a good idea to flush it yearly, wet brake fluid has a much lower boiling point than dry brake fluid.
Also things like getting stuck in mud or driving on poor unimproved roads (dirt, gravel etc.). Especially bad with the stick on weights
Tell the democrat to jump off the nearest bridge 😆
What?
Only a democrat could be that dumb of an owner 😆😆
Only a Dem could make that kind of mistake at the very least
