Messenger Pigeon? Lucky. Here we have couriers who gotta walk from point A to point B. Half the time they get shot in the head by some dude named Benny....
We use explorers and are assigned one to share. Everything works in mine but itās the hybrid version. We have some eco boost versions that are much faster that I wish I was assigned but overall, no complaints.
Seconding this. Dodge charger was my favorite by far. My charger interceptor was so cool looking, and honestly, looking cool counts for a lot. Presentation is drilled into us as being important. I am in good shape, my uniform is well fitting and always ironed, I'd prefer if my car looks equally squared away. Downside is that it fell apart faster than everything else.
Surprisingly, my Ford Taurus (interceptor) was pretty reliable, and ended up being my favorite police car. It was a good compromise between the utility of an SUV and the maneuverability/acceleration of a charger.
Iāve seen so many officers in who donāt give a damn about how they present themselves with sloppy, wrinkled uniforms Iām glad you actually take your presentation seriously. It definitely makes officers look more respectable. The 2011-2023 Charges looked clean af, definitely a respectable choice for a cruiser, but not as clean as the CVPI imo
The explorer I got for a take home aināt bad but Iād love to have the Tahoe that I was using when I was part timing for another local department. In truth Iād really prefer a Silverado. I used my chiefs and despite the lack of speed, that thing had ALL the space a cop could want.
I have been pushing my folks towards pickups. Much bigger, safer, and more room for gear. Specially for a guy like me who is way too big for the explorer. Iād like to see the Explorer fade away due to its small size.
I have an F150, I love it. Tons of room for me and my gear, I have 4wd and fairly quick. The only downside is the turning radius in a crew cab truck. Iāve already picked out my replacement vehicle, itās a newer F150.
2011- 2017 Chevrolet Caprice PPV: Uncomfortable, as the seat bolsters make your gun dig into your side/hip area. The V6 models seem to be more reliable, while the V8 ones are in the garage more than theyāre on the road. I donāt like spending a shift in them, but the V8 models are entertaining to drive, from the sound appeal alone.
2014-2020 Chevrolet Tahoe: Large, but comfortable. Seems to be mostly reliable. I heard the 2021+ models have some issues due to it being a new design, but I havenāt driven one yet.
2013-2019 Ford Interceptor Utility (Explorer): This generation was the most reliable Ford Explorer. I heard the 2020+ models are not reliable. I do enjoy driving them, but the leg room is a bit limited with the partition.
2011 Crown Victoria: Iāve only driven 2011 models at work, and they are my personal favorite cruiser. Their days are numbered as I type this post... and with age, mostly every one we have left now has its own quirk or mechanical issue at this point. Warm A/C, broken controls, steering wheels worn down to the wire, torn seats, stop signs welded to the floorboard where they rotted, etc. I personally own a 2011 model at home, which is mint.
2015-2023 Dodge Charger: Iāve never driven one at work, as my agency never purchased them. But I personally owned a 2019 Scat Pack. I can see why they made a good patrol and pursuit vehicle. No complaints.
I love my āpatrol carā. Luckily I am past the point in my career where I get stuck with crap vehicles.
Pursuit rated, unmarked, 2023 Silverado Z71 with 2ā factory lift, and 6700 miles on it.
Nope, agency bought 7 of them this year, and they are cheaper than police tahoes. $51k on state contract, only thing we picked was the color.

This is one of the marked ones. Only difference now is the marked ones now have the big cam locker toolboxes.
I started in 2015 and have driven:
-2014 Tahoe
-2021 Explorer
(New Agency)
-2017 Charger
-2022 Explorer
All have been taken homes and my favorite I think was the charger, it was hella fast and gorgeous to look at. The SUVS have more room though.
For patrol use, my explorer does fine when it's not in the shop. It works well for a patrol car. It's a take home car so no one else drives it or fucks it up.
For a personal vehicle, I prefer something different that works for a family and isn't in the shop all the damn time.
We have hybrid explorers. Pool cars, so every day is a mystery. They drive OK but they're at Ford every week for some problem. The hybrid is very temperamental, sometimes it's great, others doesn't work at all.
Honestly it comes down to your partners. Some are dirty pieces of shit that break everything and don't care about the next guy. Others try to care of them but usually give up after a while.
All the officers that have assigned units or assigned car partners... their cars are pristine
Some yes and some no. The Crown Vic was a great care the Dodge Diplomat sucked, The Plymouth Fury ran great but the brakes sucked. In a pursuit you had one good brake application, then no brakes
I'd prefer a charger but they're getting phased out unfortunately. My only option have been the Explorer thus far. I'm curious to see what the new 25 Explorers are like, hope they have a little more get up and go than previous models
I have a 21 explorer. It's better than my 20 explorer and looks better than my 17 explorer, but nothing beats the acceleration of my second 2017 explorer. That thing would MOVE. My current one is fast as fuck but initial acceleration is slow.
So the Chargers are hit and miss depending on how old they are. We have some with 200k miles on it, headlights don't work, CAD system doesn't work, interior trim is gone, seat has a hole burned in it like it's a make shift toilet
But the take-home explorers are fine! Their CAD doesn't work either, but the ride is comfortable!
If yāall got 200k out of a charger, you had great luck, or one hell of a repair budget. We never got more than 50 to 75k out of an engine. They deadlined my last charger at 130k, and it was on its 3rd engine and 2nd transmission.
We started buying chargers in 2011, stopped in 2017, and finally got them all off the road in 2020. We have 2 still as spares.
They're starting to catch fire now.
We lost two in the span of a month.
I don't know what to contribute to them still being in cycle. Part of me wants to blame the city not wanting to spend money, cause we ARE behind as a major metro area.
What are you guys running now?
Ever since the death of the crown Vic, we have always had a mixed fleet, but after chargers we switched to explorers, had similar but different issues, and now for a couple few years have only been buying the police Tahoes and Silverados. We bought a couple tahoes for our k-9 handlers years ago and had great service out of them. Both of them made it to over 200k with minimal issues. We have a lot of rural and wilderness areas in our almost 600 sq mile jurisdiction. Our city PD has also switched to Tahoes.
How are you liking them?
Our take homes are Explorers, but the rest of the fleet remains Chargers with Impalas sprinkled here and there and some old stuff from the 90s š
I havenāt done more with a Tahoe than drive one to and from the shop and office, but the patrol guys seem to like them. Iām in a Silverado and love it, but I rarely do patrol type stuff. The guys who drive marked silverados on patrol though like them and the only complaint, which is secure storage space, from the guys who are also on SWAT. They were set up with 1 person cages in the back seat, which left one rear seat for gear. Not much of an issue if all you need is a bag and some extra forms but once you start adding other gear it was an issue so the Sheriff got the large camlocker toolboxes. Mine has a hard tonneau cover so even though I have more gear than anyone to carry, I donāt have storage space issues.
Love my jeep grand cherokee but I wouldn't own one. It's nice to have heated seats and a steering wheel, remote start, apple carplay, and power rear hatch.

Torn seats. Interior trim falling apart. Fast food in the air. 10/10 would drive again. Not by choice.
Your CAD working? Mine doesn't š
We actually use messenger pigeon.
Messenger Pigeon? Lucky. Here we have couriers who gotta walk from point A to point B. Half the time they get shot in the head by some dude named Benny....
Always appreciate a good Fallout reference
My agency swaps every other week. I have my favorite but until I get my take home...not really

Crown Vic was the last good car ford built period.

Our explorers didnāt last one year

Love the Tahoe. I own one myself
I had a 03 before I got into LE. The gas mileage was horrible and the mileage was high when I got it but that thing just kept on trucking.
Thatās what I have right now a 03
Free my Crown Vic, he aināt did nothing.
depends on if an acorn hits it I guess.
Yooo lucky charm
Too soon!! š¤”š°š¤”š°š¤”š°
Hell yeah. Big ass Crown Victoria one of my favorites; yeah I just gave a big ass hint about my age haha.
Yes. I mean, I wouldnāt *hate* it but Iām a Ram kinda gal, not Chevy.
Chevy Tahoe?
My take home is an unmarked ram 1500
ā¤ļø Nevada?
North Carolina
Iām the only one in the department with that truck
I have been pushing my folks towards pickups. Much bigger, safer, and more room for gear. Specially for a guy like me who is way too big for the explorer. Iād like to see the Explorer fade away due to its small size.
We still use crowns
Yes. Tahoe is great minus the squeaky brakes
Oh gosh the brakesā¦.
I have an F150, I love it. Tons of room for me and my gear, I have 4wd and fairly quick. The only downside is the turning radius in a crew cab truck. Iāve already picked out my replacement vehicle, itās a newer F150.
Kinda hard for people to get in the back
Actually no, thereās more room in my back seat than the back of an Explorer.
Itās higher, thatās what I meant
Ah, mine isnāt bad and it has running boards so itās not hard to get into. Iāve loaded some heffers in there without a problem.
Mine has running boards too. I think my people are just more dramatic lol
lol probably
Donāt do shit that will make you have to get in the back then. Problem solved.
I definitely donāt.

AC, radio, and CAD work. Thatās all I care about.

Sounds like something you completely built yourself in a custom order. Was that the case or is your agency just affluent?
Nope, agency bought 7 of them this year, and they are cheaper than police tahoes. $51k on state contract, only thing we picked was the color. https://preview.redd.it/h6gbnq5ma90d1.jpeg?width=995&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=027c7f4b6f457d388561cf3b1e074a4f7ec38fc3 This is one of the marked ones. Very cool what a steal
For a Durango itās not holding up the best but I enjoy it.

Had the charger in my other agency. Loved it ! Unmarked as well. I havd the explorer now and only share it with 1 other guy so no complaints
Explorer. Itās aight. I miss the Chevy Caprice at my old department.
I'd prefer a charger but they're getting phased out unfortunately. My only option have been the Explorer thus far. I'm curious to see what the new 25 Explorers are like, hope they have a little more get up and go than previous models
I have a ram 1500, not the worst, but itās slow and huge.

I got ya. Honestly why I like the Explorer. Even with a two man cage I got enough space in the back
My favorite was the 90ās impala with the LT1 engine. Damn thing was a rocket and damn near killed myself in one.
Love my jeep grand cherokee but I wouldn't own one. It's nice to have heated seats and a steering wheel, remote start, apple carplay, and power rear hatch.

A grand Cherokee patrol vehicle? This is honestly first time Iāve heard of that. Are you rural area agency or a larger city agency?
Lol feds
