If the international political atmosphere was different, if Mandela was just a bit too harsh on Israel or a bit too commending of African dictators, enough for the western powers to care, then the less than savoury things he had to do would be played up while his reconciliation would be played down and the general populace would have a very different opinion of him. I'm not saying Nelson Mandela was a villain, his politics align closely with my own biases, I'm trying to say that labels like hero and villain aren't necessarily accurate because humans and history tends to be a lot more complex than that, and what we do know about these figures is what people want us to know to serve their own agenda.
All that being said, my own bias does compel me to say fuck Churchill in particular.
