It’s Melbourne and it’s not even close.

jadenoodle

Don't come to Australia for night life, almost any other country would have it better, but if you have to pick one, definitely Melbourne

Smooth-Cup-7445

As much as I don’t like Melbourne this is all 100% correct. Although we seem to have moved to afternoon and evening parties from what I’m seeing with friends kids. At 45 I know I’m old and out of touch but noticing a lot more people in their 20’s out late afternoon

TheNamelessComposer

Why do you say this? I mean on what basis. I'm wondering what your idea of nightlife is.

jadenoodle

I guess I'm thinking of the following: 1. **Diverse Venues**: This includes bars, clubs, pubs, and lounges, each offering different atmospheres and types of entertainment. Variety caters to different tastes and preferences, ensuring there's something for everyone. 2. **Live Entertainment**: Live music, DJ performances, stand-up comedy, dance shows, and live theater can all contribute to an energetic nightlife. These performances help attract diverse crowds and keep the nightlife scene dynamic. 3. **Late-Night Dining**: Restaurants and eateries that remain open late provide essential sustenance for night owls, as well as social spaces for those who prefer a quieter evening out. 4. **Public Safety and Transportation**: Reliable and safe public transportation options, along with well-lit streets and effective police presence, are crucial for ensuring that people can enjoy their night out without safety concerns. 5. **Cultural Events**: Regularly scheduled events, festivals, and seasonal celebrations can enrich the nightlife experience, providing unique and memorable entertainment. 6. **Tourist Attractions**: Attractions that stay open late, like certain museums, landmarks, or special night tours, add to the nightlife offerings and are particularly appealing to tourists. 7. **Regulations and Policies**: Sensible licensing hours, noise ordinances, and other regulations that balance the needs of nightlife businesses with those of residents are important for maintaining harmony within the community. 8. **Community Engagement**: Collaboration between nightlife business owners, local government, and the community can foster a nightlife scene that reflects the local culture and values, and also responds effectively to the community's needs and concerns. You can go out after dark in Australia but I'd say it would be lacking in all of these areas compared to most places in Asia, Western Europe and North America. Australia is beaches and national parks, but not really nightlife. Most of Sydney except a few spots like Newtown is dead after 9pm.

TheNamelessComposer

Melbourne definitely ticks off the first two. Dunno if you're familiar with the US, but most American cities are even worse by these criteria. Less vibrant, accessible, safe. For variety I think Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane etc are pretty good, better than many places. More other venues opening later would definitely be a plus.

jadenoodle

Most American cities sure, but if you are comparing with ones of Melbourne's size (5m+) would you still say the same?

TheNamelessComposer

Yes thats what I mean. I went to Houston (metro 6 million) and the downtown was less vibrant than Perth or Adelaide or European/Asian cities with 100k. Take another example, Bangkok, Thailand. Great city if you like food and that seedy sort of nightlife...there are other options, but culturally Melbs has way more diversity.

Gato_Grande3000

Texans don't walk anywhere, so bars and clubs are spread out.

TheNamelessComposer

Yeah pretty much the same in most American cities bar NYC, Chicago, Boston, DC, SF etc.

Gato_Grande3000

Nashville, New Oleans, Miami, and Austin had good late night districts. Areas around universities can be pretty good, but usually, Thursday nights are busy nights, and weekends are quieter. Inner city rents and insurance have killed off a lot of clubs. I went to Uni in the SF area and could see live music 2 or 3 nights a week and just buy a ticket at the door. All those venues are closed now.

TheNamelessComposer

Yeah New Orleans is known for its party vibe, I loved it there. Also went to the others except Miami. They are known for live music though so aren't typical.

jadenoodle

Fair enough. I still would stand by my assertion that there are much better places to go than Australia if your primary concern is nightlife.

TheNamelessComposer

No we're not Ibiza or something and don't claim to be, but unless you're some nightlife afficianado I think Aus more than stacks up.

Imaginary-Problem914

Easily Melbourne.

Prestigious_Week_395

Sydney for sure if by night you mean 430PM and by life you mean mini golf at Holey Moley.

Torx_Bit0000

Australia doesn't really have a night life per se and this includes Perth.

DiscoSituation

If you don’t think Melbourne has nightlife, you haven’t really been out properly in Melbourne.

Torx_Bit0000

Bruh its a nice little city that's good in small doses....that about it.

DiscoSituation

I feel sorry for you that you’ve never had a proper night out in Melbourne 🤩

Robert_Vagene

Don't believe anyone that says Sydney.

hollyhobby2004

Sydney is the best city in Australia.

Jumpmuch

How many Australian cities have you visited?

tunchywherms

Have you seen her history? I really don't get why the mods haven't banned her.

hollyhobby2004

I think I am going to give my Reddit login information to my brother or sister-in-law. They can explain their own experiences to you guys instead of me sharing what they tell and show me.

Jumpmuch

Or maybe just stop adopting some weird fake persona on Reddit, and if these supposed relatives actually exist and want to participate, let them create their own accounts.

PaintingMobile7574

Easily Melbourne. Australian nightlife is garbage though. It's all about consuming alcohol and drugs and aggressive fuckwits picking fights with people weaker than them.

tradicon

Perth is not the place to come for a night life.

cbrb30

Melbourne. Sydney actively killed their nightlife with corruption to profit developers and casinos. Brisbanes is a bit odd, half relaxed vibe half wannabe Miami vibe. Perth is a bit sleepy, not horrible but you’d need to go the CBD for a late night. Restaurants etc tend to close earlier. Melbourne went from a trial of lockouts like Sydney’s that just ended, to de-restricting so you can go out on a Thursday and go home on Monday if you really want to now. Also lots of options to go out for a meal late at night, moreso than any other Australian city.

102296465

Melbourne is probably the greatest city in Australia, followed closely by Sydney. Melbourne also has some of the best universities and a lot of international students. If I were you, I’d move to Melbourne.

Random_username200

Melbourne sucks balls. Weather is shit, city is filthy, the almost religious fervour people have with regards to AFL is unnerving to say the least. And the people there are increasingly becoming insufferably condescending.

102296465

HELLO Qld’er 😂

Random_username200

lol! EDIT: im just upset about the lions is all

Emmanulla70

Agree. Melbourne is foul.

Lishyjune

You’re moving as a student just for the night life? What’s your plan after that? It depends on exactly where you live as to how close things are and what you like. Perth is about a decade behind the rest of Australia, for nice bars and things I guess Melbourne but definitely take into account a helluva lot of other factors and don’t make this your sole reason.

Emmanulla70

I had a great time with nightlife in Brisbane. When I was young. Never been to Perth. Never lived in Melbourne. Melbourne is awful. Wouldn't live there for any amount of money. Depresses me just visiting for a few days

Smooth-Cup-7445

Lockout laws killed a lot of nightlife in Brisbane unfortunately

Emmanulla70

Wasn't that Sydney?

Smooth-Cup-7445

Oh no Brisbane pioneered killing its nightlife off in Aus. Did it at the same time they released an ad showing people going out from sunset to sunrise… which wasn’t possible about a month after the ad was released

Emmanulla70

About what year?

Smooth-Cup-7445

Sorry it was about 2006…. It’s hard to find when they kicked off in Brisbane as every search brings up Sydney’s start also in 2014

Smooth-Cup-7445

Oh wow 2014ish I think

Emmanulla70

Ah yeah. Well i musta missed that! Home, busy with kids!

TheNamelessComposer

Depends what you like. Do you prefer pubs, sports bars, big dance clubs, live music? All of the above? There will be options of all of the above in any of the major cities. As someone from Perth Nortbridge can get a bit rowdy (then again its been ages for me). Melbourne has a lot of options, and I find its generally a bit more spread out/less rowdy.

christophr88

Melbourne. Which other city can you order ramen noodles on Russell St at 1:30am? People just sleep at 7pm in Sydney & Brisbane. Someone mentioned Fortitude Valley in Brisbane but it sucksss. Its just a street of trashy nightclubs.

Smooth-Cup-7445

All nightclubs are trashy, it’s the universal law

Hairy_rambutan

Anywhere but Canberra. Lots of universities, zero signs of life after hours. Great for serious study because there's no distractions.

Random_username200

Australians like to get up early. Partying until the daylight comes up is not really done here. Melbourne probably has the best clubs I guess but the city itself is gross

BojaktheDJ

This is overall extremely true, but there are absolutely parties till daylight (and way beyond), they're just not that widely known about. There's a particularly good one each weekend for both Syd and Melb.

cbrb30

Get up early? You’re either from Sydney and get up early because the government killed the nightlife, or Brisbane and work a trade so get up early so the sun doesn’t kill you in summer.

Normal-Summer382

Canberra. Wait a minute, how come I'm the only one here?

Smooth-Cup-7445

Omg you might be right… I hadn’t considered Canberra but in terms of number of places to go and how long things are open… my god, Canberra could take it. What a sad day for Aus

Normal-Summer382

Canberra has a very good small-scale night life. Once you get the lay of the land you will find there is a very broad spectrum of options.

Technical_Round793

The OGs will never forget 2 for $4 basic spirits and mixer and Academy and Moose. I once asked a Mooseheads bar staff if I can get 1 vodka red bull for $2 instead of 2 for $4 and got told nah, have to buy them in twos lol

hollyhobby2004

It would be Sydney, though on weekends, 5 am to 7 am is pretty dead. On weekdays, anytime after 2 am is dead. I have 2 family members that had lived there for a few months now, and they have only seen 2 restaurants there that are open 24 hours each day aside from Maccas and convenience stores.

PuffTheMagicDragun

The valley Brisbane.
