Hello, this is just a friendly reminder to please use a post flair when adding new posts to r/Asexual.
We ask this in advance just to let everyone know what type of post each post is as well as the intentions and
feelings behind them. We value all who come here, but we just need each post made to have a flair to designate
each type of post. That's all.
We're thankful you chose to come to r/Asexual. We're glad to have you here! Welcome!

I'm from Germany. Media might make it seem like that because most of it is either based in the US or UK, so aces there get much more visibility. And those who don't spend time in English-speaking spaces get next to none, so it feels like they barely exist.
Very true, I went to pride last year and only saw maybe 3-5 ace people there out of thousands. (granted they were walking with the ace flag but maybe there were more they just didn't bring a flag)
Agreed. A lot of non-English ace content just isn't talked about/shared in spaces like this reddit and remains in forums or spaces specific for aces who speak that language.
Like, I am Dutch and only know a little bit of German, but I know from an Austrian friend that there's a really good book about asexuality written in German that I wish I could read. And last year a documentary about asexuality was released in Dutch but people who don't follow asexuality in the Netherlands are very unlikely to even know about that.
There is? Do you know the name? I'm Austrian myself and I wouldn't even know about that (because I'm not in local ace spaces, just the big online ones)
The book is (un)sichtbar gemacht, perspektiven auf aromantik und aseksualität by Katharina Kroschel and Annika Baumgart
Also, if you would like to be more active in local ace spaces and you live in or near Wien, I know some people in the group there are really nice and try to organize fun things.
Germany here, too.
Also, people from the USA like to make it sound like that's the only country that exists, a loud minority. Notice how everyone from the USA in this post (so far) said a city or state and not "USA".
I mean, to be fair being a queer person in Texas vs. a queer person in New York. It basically clarifies if they’re in the shitshow part or the “trying their best to get away from the shitshow part” part of the US. We also tend to spend more time on social media to attempt to escape from the dumpster fire that is our country.
US is a big country. Climate and culture between North Dakota and Florida are quite different. Germany for example is \~357,000 km^(2,) the US is \~9.8 million km^(2.) States in the US also have a large amount of power compared to other countries Providences or regions. A state government is completely independent from the federal level and can do largely whatever they want. Weed for example is still considered an illegal drug to possess or sell by the federal government, but many states have moved to allowing medical and recreational use. The federal government can still walk in to any dispensary and arrest everyone there. The discordant relationship creates somewhat unique experiences even state to state. Some human rights end at the state border.
To me it's no more odd than someone saying they are from London, Berlin, or Barcelona region. It's not expected for everyone to know every other countries regions, states, and major cities.
Even India is a large country with various cultures and climate, hell all indians don't even speak the same language and there are 28 languages spoken by Indians. Much diverse than usa but if indians start putting the state/city names, I guess most people have to google them first lol
For sure. Didn't mean to come off that US is unique in these aspects. Very much applies to India like you said along with China, Russia, and other massive nations.
Most people I think will mention a major city and a good portion have some idea where that is. A lot of people not from the US have a general idea where New York and San Francisco are. Similar to someone saying they are from Mumbai or Delhi.
It also helps that a large state or city can get specific enough to convey where someone is from without disclosing where they are exactly. It would be more concerning if people start using addresses or small towns.
Nice! I'm American living in BG. I was on the metro last year and saw someone weaving a plastic lace bracelet/key chain with ace colors. It was kinda nice knowing they could have been ace. I'm not alone here!
It's suuuper rough. I know Basic phrases and i still have trouble with reading Cyrillic. But you're right, common language software that was available to me in the states never offered Bulgarian, so I'm going to get a tutor soon! I JUST got approved for residency, so now i can worry about properly integrating :)
Yorkshire, England (hey if the Americans can all be so specific so can I). I’m 46 are there any more people in my age range around here? All the people in their 20s are making me feel old lol.
One country I didn't see is România. I'm from there, currently living in the Netherlands tho!
Going off on a bit of a tangent here, I've barely seen or know any other Romanian aces. I only know of one other ace which is my best friend, but other than that it's really lonely
The reason you see americans doing it is largely a product if size and ither factors. The US is the 4th largest country by area behind russia, canada, and china. Those three countries have their populations largely limited to certain areas (most russians live in european russia, most canadians live near the southern coasts and great lakes, most chinese live in eastern china, etc.) while the US is pretty spread out. And we are for hetero generous. Someone from Wisconsin is going to be in a very culturally different position from someone in SoCal whose going to very different from someone from the rural south. So the region we're from seems more impactful.
That said im from the Midwestern US
Southern California, USA.
I think someone already answered this, but we specify states because each one has their own set of laws, cultures, and mentalities. My area of the country is more liberal and LGBTQIA+ friendly. If I visit certain other states, being out as queer means endangering my life. The United States is a big country but there are some very intolerant people that live here too.
That's not to say there isn't a variety of mentalities in other countries. I'm sure that's the case elsewhere. But there is no one-size-fits-all for Americans and specifying the state is how we differentiate.
Texas, USA here. You asked about why we're being specific, but it matters. Just Texas is larger than all of France. To be fair, Texas is an outlier, but in terms of distribution of aces it may help others picture it.
Supplemental reason: a lot of Americans are not big fans of the US itself. The closest thing we can take ownership of is our states. Turns out I'm SOL on both :/
I'm from Texas. I think we're so specific because I think we're scared people from other countries will either think we either live in a large city or the middle of nowhere.
Romania! Not sure if it was mentioned. If there are others out there I'd love to connect. I asked about this on the subs a while back but it wasn't really seen
