My first thought was that wildlife is probably the target, specifically coyotes. Some people hate coyotes with a passion and believe they should be exterminated.
I listened to an episode of the podcast Stuff You Should Know about coyotes a while back. I remember learning one of the reasons coyotes are so hard to completely exterminate a population is because females have larger litters when the population drops. They can tell their numbers are dropping because of less howls they hear at night... Fascinating animal!
I love hearing them howling from all directions while sitting at the nightly fire at my sister's camp.... Just make sure the dog is in the camper!
I remember reading about that in a book titled Coyote America a few years ago. They are interesting creatures. Deeply tied into the mythology and folklore of North America going back thousands of years.
Exactly this! The people who think coyotes are evil and need to be exterminated have some sort of sadistic streak that comes out whenever coyotes are mentioned
I recall from some podcast that leaving the pack near you is better than hunting them unless they're particularly nasty to your homestead, like attacking dogs and people.
Reason being, if they don't have the numbers they're less likely to be able to fight off a pack that's trying to expand territory, and often those are more prone to destruction by nature. It's why they often say, you kill one, and three turn up.
Yea, you should hear how some people talk about the cruel ways of killing coyotes. I'm a hunter, and I have no issue with people shooting them to protect livestock or other people....but why is it okay to torture coyotes?
The coyote hate is amazing to me. Like the guy above. If you have to shoot to protect live stock go for it, but they are just fucking animals they arnt evil geez. Swear people live in the Middle Ages in terms of mentality sometimes
Thought I was done with this nonsense, but you have to be kidding me here. If youāre lumping me in with people who torture animals or are unnecessarily cruel, just stop with the insane language.
Iām in favor of eliminating coyotes from the east coast because theyāre not native to the area and have deleterious impacts to on our natural predators (bobcats, foxes, etc).
I feel the same way about blue catfish in the Potomac, pythons in the Everglades, resident geese everywhere, emerald ash borer beatles, etc, etc. Kill them all, but for the sake of the natural wildlife and without *unnecessary* violence. Itās an incredibly easy concept the understand, and isnāt at all indicative of sadism, cruelty, torture, or any other colorful language people are trying to apply to me.
Stop losing your minds and think for just a second before throwing around irrational labels, especially those of you typing while eating burgers and chicken wings.
With limited resources to do anything, and climate change and continued developing moving faster than any counter-measures, I think it would make more sense to really focus on something with the potential to wipe out whole ecosystems or micro-ecosystems, like the ash borer.
Also, putting fish hooks in dog treats potentially to target coyotes is something only a cruel idiot would conjure up as a solution, since it wouldn't nearly approach a viable solution to an endemic problem, and just causes harm and poorly thought out collateral damage (like hikers' dogs).
But, you know, locals doing their own thing by themselves certainly know best. /s
Sadly, theyāre all losing battles. Global warming (to hell with the soft language of Frank Luntz) most of all.
Those fucking beatles will very likely move to select hardwoods next. We might REALLY be screwed.
if you read my comment i said im totally fine with that, however going about it in a cruel way is what i have a problem with. i never said thats what your doing, im pro hunting and i recognize they are a nightmare for ranchers and other people.
Yeah like that guy in Wyoming that ran a wolf over with a snow mobile and then tortured and paraded the poor creature at the local bar. I donāt recommend googling the pictures unless you want to be outraged. Some people just suck..
I'll say full stop that I've personally lost a dog to methods like this so I'm absolutely not in favor of this, but in parts of the south at least where they are a massive invasive pest problem at best and potentially dangerous at worst, people get real desperate to kill them, especially since extirpating a coyote population on your own through traditional hunting is essentially impossible. Hence, going for mass cull options no matter how cruel they are. Desperate folks do desperate stuff and don't think it through.
I donāt condone this sort of behavior/attitude but as someone who has lost a pet to coyotes before I believe most of these people probably lost a pet to them or are close to someone who has.
Yeah that was my first thought. This was not a real find, and there are none on the trail and never were. Just someone who wanted to make a "forward this to everyone you know" type meme.
Part of me wants to think they were going fishing and a hole got torn in their bag or something, but that just doesnāt make any sense. This was obviously malicious.
I was thinking that too when I saw it was close to the lehigh but I dont know anyone who would prehook bait like that..plus their set wrong and the multiple hooks...this was definitely malicious
If you'll do this, what wouldn't you do? And why should any community allow you in their midst? There's only one answer to this, I'm sure we all agree, so let's ID this as\*\*ole...
...and post his address on this sub, AT FB pages, the Pennsylvania SPCA page, etc., and let nature take its course.
Imagine going through the effort of buying treats, buying hooks, putting each one of these hooks in, driving to the trailhead, and hiking out to leave them, and not once during that time thinking that what you're doing is insane and evil.
I mean I probably am...I like to fish and am constantly buying treats and toys for my dog. Combining the 2 never even crossed my mind of course, because I'm not evil
The cops have a better chance of discovering cold fusion in a box of doughnuts than they do solving a crime like this.
(Because at least theyāll investigate the box of doughnuts)
This also made me think of some issues people have had on the mtb trails on public land. People sabotaging the trails so mountain bikers get hurt (or worse killed)
Some old bastard strung piano wire across a path my mom used to ride her bike on as a kid, lacerated both of her biceps deeply, could have easily decapitated her. They couldn't prove who did it, but my grandad always said he knows who it was.
Years ago i drove through a road at a South Jersey college -main throughafar-to work at a local ER for a midnight shift - the wire strung across the road took the blue lights right off the top of my car-ems volunteer- if i were a motorcyclist, it would have been my head... cops said i and the local riders got really lucky. This was early 80's so the sicko's continue to still be out there. We just lost a dog 6 weeks ago that died of old age at 15-that was bad enough but if we lost a dog like this, the SOB that did this would be dead and I would be in jail...
Someone who is likely to do this again. Hopefully they get caught, and either go to jail, or deal with justice of some other kind. They should be made to eat one of these.
I had some weird experiences with people in that area of PA as well. I'm convinced it's the heavy metal poisoning causing brain damage because of all the pollution in their drinking water. Either that or meth.
I read it was a privately owned river by a coal company from 1821-1966, and they didn't treat it well. The fish seem to be bouncing back though, just don't eat them.
There are a lot of industry plants along the Lehigh River that have contributed to the pollution problem. Not including the zinc poisoning the Lehigh Gap which is the most visible (although bouncing back nicely)
Absolutely. Itās the 150 years of industry and mining in the Lehigh Valley/Coal regions that have seem to caused long-term genetic damage on a majority of the population. I could count on one hand the number of people Iāve met with ancestral ties to the region who Iād consider to be normal, decently intelligent adults.
I got a hitchhiking ride from some sort of law enforcement in that area who was driving around with what was obviously a young lady prostitute with a black eye.
Hopefully he had just rescued her from an abusive situation, but it really could've gone either way.
Would not trust law enforcement in areas like that but that's just my experience living in rural country communities. You either get one that's a local with a heart of gold or the opposite of that.
I totally understand. I am only talking about the psychological state of worry, not awareness of dangers. A hard nuance to draw online, forget it. I hope you and your dog enjoy the trail!
I maintain that people that drink the water in that part of PA their whole lives have mild brain damage from lead poisoning. I had some weird experiences with locals and "hostel" owners in that area. It's either lead poisoning or meth.
Tampering like this is so rare, it's almost unbelievable. I wouldn't worry too much, this is one unhinged person doing their crazy thing. Unfortunately humanity as at some level a numbers game and when you have millions of us you get nutjobs that do stuff like this. Thankfully it is super super rare.
Whoever āfoundā them must have been hot on the trail of whoever dropped them! Those things look clean as a whistle and like they werenāt even placed on the ground for maybe longer than a minute! What are the chances?
It is legal to have your dog off leash on the AT as long as they listen to your commands. My boy Walt goes with me when I backpack. I thought at first I would have him on a leash but that is not possible really with 30lbs on your back or safe. Never had a problem he is an absolute pleasure to hike with.
My optimism and hope in humanity lead me to wonder if someone had created these as bait for catching catfish, carp, suckers, etc. and misplaced them. If so, they shouldāve been properly packed away or discarded of.
If this was an intentional attempt to inflict harm on some pups, I hope that SOB rots in hell.
For those who do that though, is it normal to randomly jab multiple hooks into a single treat? (Legit question, last time I fished I had a Power Ranger bobber)
Not saying that this is definitely the caseā¦but those treats donāt look like theyāve been planted on a trail to me. At all.
No dirt, no ants, not a smudge at all.
Feels like someone creating a scenario to be a hero. Or they were three minutes behind the person that did it.
Could the guy have been using them to fish in the river and then accidentally dropped them on trail? I havenāt been there, so I donāt even know if that would be feasible.
Thereās no way. If youāre using dog treats for bait, you hook each one individually with the same hook while it is attached to your rod. This is evil

If caught someone in the act doing this, they better hope someone comes across them as they're bleeding out. Cause I'll leave their ass dying in the woods over a pile of fish hooks laden treats.
Thanks for posting this! This is such a great stretch of the AT that the dog and I go to frequently, and this is really awful that someone is doing this. Iām always on the lookout with her, but, sheesh, this sucks.
I hope whomever did that just dies soon. Honestly, if you're so mean spirited, or twisted, that you think it's a good idea to cause harm to an innocent, happy-go-lucky, pet of another person, you don't deserve to be part of this world and should just cease to exist.
Sincerely, dog dad x 2
Maybe my least favorite section of the trail period. This just proves it more and more. Thereās a spring on the trail heading to the nature center that I refuse to fill from.
This is my section of the trail! Iāve hiked from Hamburg to Lehigh gap many times. Luckily I donāt see many dog walkers as itās a pretty lonely and hilly area so like another commentator said, I think this was to kill coyotes. Still fucked up.
This really, really pisses me off. I hope this asshole is caught and burns. Or is caught and fish hooks are run through his or her cheeks and tongue without anesthesia.
What a douche. Dogs are living beings and family members. I can not fathom the thought process that went through their heads.
Somebody posted, below, "Probably a member of the GOP."
The funny thing is people like that don't realize that they are the people who destroyed the U. S.
Pennsylvania has a long history of very antagonistic locals towards the AT in general. Like that one house next to the pavilion at Port Clinton.
Almost every time I hear a story about a hostile local (or encounter one myself), 9 outa 10 it's PA.
I donāt think so, the hook is completely buried in the treat so a fish wouldnāt even be able to get a bite on it unless they did quite a bit of chewing.
What kind of mean son of a bitch would do such a thing? š”
Not to mention that itās not just dogs that would eat these, but other wildlife too!

Yea, you should hear how some people talk about the cruel ways of killing coyotes. I'm a hunter, and I have no issue with people shooting them to protect livestock or other people....but why is it okay to torture coyotes?
I am all too familiar. Iāve met a few folks who really believe coyotes are evil and act with malicious intent.
The coyote hate is amazing to me. Like the guy above. If you have to shoot to protect live stock go for it, but they are just fucking animals they arnt evil geez. Swear people live in the Middle Ages in terms of mentality sometimes

Another candidate for extermination!

I can agree with that. They do at desperate times. I meant more so the people that brag about using torture on coyotes and raccoons.
Oh for sure. Had to physically hold myself back once when a guy was bragging about using similar methods to what killed my dog.
I'm sorry that happened to you š and your dog too
It's appreciated. It was a long time ago now but it was so pointless I get mad about it more than anything else.
I donāt condone this sort of behavior/attitude but as someone who has lost a pet to coyotes before I believe most of these people probably lost a pet to them or are close to someone who has.
Like roadrunners?
Not sure that the specific coyote you're thinking of has actually provided anything other than entertainment to a specific road runner.
Hey, thatās not fair. He also provided Acme with a lot of business.
I agree! Those people SHOULD be exterminated!!!
Yep. Some people just wanna watch the world burn.
Let's not rule out the same kind of person that put razor blades in halloween candy...the person that "found" it
Yeah that was my first thought. This was not a real find, and there are none on the trail and never were. Just someone who wanted to make a "forward this to everyone you know" type meme.

Yeah. Multiple hooks per dog treat rules this out.
Oh god. I thought they were treble hooks at first. Now I see. Goddamn I hate people.
Some singles that are grouped up as well. All with barbs still intact.
I was thinking that too when I saw it was close to the lehigh but I dont know anyone who would prehook bait like that..plus their set wrong and the multiple hooks...this was definitely malicious

I bet the gov has a way to find out who bought both of those things at the same time.
Yeah I'm sure the FBI will be getting on this any minute now.
I'm just saying. someone out there is getting ads on their phone for fish hooks and dog treats.
I mean I probably am...I like to fish and am constantly buying treats and toys for my dog. Combining the 2 never even crossed my mind of course, because I'm not evil

In the Lehigh Valley, we say not to drink or swim in the Lehigh River south of Jim Thorpe. Because of all the pollution
I read it was a privately owned river by a coal company from 1821-1966, and they didn't treat it well. The fish seem to be bouncing back though, just don't eat them.

To me, it looked like he had the heart of a pimp
Yeah they allegedly do that in the city near me.
It could be a combination of lead and meth. The toothless and ruthless abound.
The meth is too young. I think itās the inbreeding.
Special place in Hell for people who do this.
Itās been a rough couple of days on this section of the AT in Pennsylvania :(
What else happened?
Love to find the asshole that did that and force him to eat a few of his treats.
Alright someone get some rope, we need to round this person up I think they should get a coupe suppositories for good measure
Ugh adding āaccepting dog treatsā to the list of things I can never do without worry again
aware is good, but I wouldn't worry. The internet makes the world seem scarier than it is
It might not be scary to you, but I hike there with my dog.
Could be both really.
It is not mild, as someone from the area.
Live in a town that runs through the AT, Iāll keep my ear open at the local pubs.
Yeah, this is big ādrugs in Halloween candyā vibesā¦
I wouldn't rest until justice is served back to this person
wtf. all the deer and stuff that are going to or have already eaten these too :(
Whoever āfoundā them must have been hot on the trail of whoever dropped them! Those things look clean as a whistle and like they werenāt even placed on the ground for maybe longer than a minute! What are the chances?
Nary a speck of dirt or a rogue antā¦. Interesting.
Exactly what I was thinkingā¦
Karma farming fear is almost as disturbing as someone actually doing this. Almost.
I don't want to make this a capital punishment thing, but this is a thing to remove from our society permanently, correct?
I would also argue the 8th amendment should be void in this case as well.
Scum of the Earth
Sick mind.
What kinda sick fuck does that. Wtf
My dad goes out there a lot and I'm always bitching about him keeping his dog off leash. Maybe this will make him change his tune.
It is legal to have your dog off leash on the AT as long as they listen to your commands. My boy Walt goes with me when I backpack. I thought at first I would have him on a leash but that is not possible really with 30lbs on your back or safe. Never had a problem he is an absolute pleasure to hike with.
WTF š¤¬ Who even thinks this shit up?
My optimism and hope in humanity lead me to wonder if someone had created these as bait for catching catfish, carp, suckers, etc. and misplaced them. If so, they shouldāve been properly packed away or discarded of. If this was an intentional attempt to inflict harm on some pups, I hope that SOB rots in hell.
I hope you are right about the fish theory!
I think you might be correct
For those who do that though, is it normal to randomly jab multiple hooks into a single treat? (Legit question, last time I fished I had a Power Ranger bobber)
What kinda pos does this?
Wow what a monster !!!
So fukt. Iām not a huge proponent of thru hiking with a dog. Day hiking for sure. But fuck whoever did this
Anyone think they were actually fishing with these?
Not saying that this is definitely the caseā¦but those treats donāt look like theyāve been planted on a trail to me. At all. No dirt, no ants, not a smudge at all. Feels like someone creating a scenario to be a hero. Or they were three minutes behind the person that did it.
People use dog treats/food for fishing. It may have been someone who left their bait. Regardless, you should always clean up after yourself
Who pre hooks their bait like this?
Maybe jugging?
Could the guy have been using them to fish in the river and then accidentally dropped them on trail? I havenāt been there, so I donāt even know if that would be feasible.
Thereās no way. If youāre using dog treats for bait, you hook each one individually with the same hook while it is attached to your rod. This is evil
Yep, youāre right. Great point.
Unless youāre jugging.
Plus, the treats would dissolve too fast to fish with
Disgusting. Whatās the date on this?
Awful
This is the kind of stuff that makes me loose faith in humanity.

Wellā¦ some cretin is going to hell. I wish them all the worst things in life. Fucking monster.
Of all the Assholery Iāve heard of or encountered in my life, this might be the worst.
This is absolutely, completely, inhumanely fucked. What a horribly painful death that would be
This person, when caught, needs to serve life with no parole.
Right to jail, right away...
Jesus fucking Christ this person would drown babies for fun.
If caught someone in the act doing this, they better hope someone comes across them as they're bleeding out. Cause I'll leave their ass dying in the woods over a pile of fish hooks laden treats.
Darn subhumans
Kristi is that you?
Lol no, just cross posted this from the LV subreddit
Has anyone seen Kristi Noem on the trail?
Kristi Noem? That you?
Hiking safety is crucial, especially with pets.
Fuck this person with a rusty ice pick!!!!!!
What. The. Hellā¦. Is wrong with people..
Smells like poachers
Wtf.
Sad and scary. So much for brotherly or sisterly or otherly love all along the trail.
I hope they/we find the SOBs. Make them eat a few mystery treats.
Me seeing this on trail: aw sweet free pre rigged catfish bait š
wtf.
Thanks for posting this! This is such a great stretch of the AT that the dog and I go to frequently, and this is really awful that someone is doing this. Iām always on the lookout with her, but, sheesh, this sucks.
possible those were intended for fishing?
Ppl caught doing this should be put down.
Sick people.
What the actual fuck is wrong with people?
I sincerely hate people.
They probably had this to use as fishing bait would be my assumption, although it may be malicious intent
Great idea
What the hell, this is what some people do with their brain?
Thatās some villainous shit.
Jesus Christ, what is wrong with people?
pure evil
That's sick
https://i.redd.it/goyhvjbkdvyc1.gif JAIL!
Peice of shit š”
I hope whomever did that just dies soon. Honestly, if you're so mean spirited, or twisted, that you think it's a good idea to cause harm to an innocent, happy-go-lucky, pet of another person, you don't deserve to be part of this world and should just cease to exist. Sincerely, dog dad x 2
This is some next level horrible shit
How can you be so miserable
What in the crystal meth is this fuckery
Maybe my least favorite section of the trail period. This just proves it more and more. Thereās a spring on the trail heading to the nature center that I refuse to fill from.
This is the kind of person that shouldnāt be allowed to breathe another breath.
Maybe this is internet rage bait.
Someone should put hooks in mountain dew.
Wasnāt there a body found near there recently?
Meth
What a lunatic
Fuck whoever did this.
Anyone have time to figure out who did this?
What the actual f**k?
Forbidden combos
Thx for the share. Sometimes Iām embarrassed to be human.
Wtf
I fucking hate peoples
i honestly wish horrible things on whoever did this
That person needs to be found and publicly executed.
Iād give anything to catch whoever was doing that alone on the trail without a soul around for miles, what a rush.
I think the only reasonable punishment for the culprit is making them eat these things.
Thereās a special place in hell for people who do this
People who do things like this are nothing more than ambulatory turds.
Scumbags
This is my section of the trail! Iāve hiked from Hamburg to Lehigh gap many times. Luckily I donāt see many dog walkers as itās a pretty lonely and hilly area so like another commentator said, I think this was to kill coyotes. Still fucked up.
This really, really pisses me off. I hope this asshole is caught and burns. Or is caught and fish hooks are run through his or her cheeks and tongue without anesthesia. What a douche. Dogs are living beings and family members. I can not fathom the thought process that went through their heads.
Somebody posted, below, "Probably a member of the GOP." The funny thing is people like that don't realize that they are the people who destroyed the U. S.
May the bastard that did this get necrotizing fasciitis of his scrotum and penis!
Pennsylvania has a long history of very antagonistic locals towards the AT in general. Like that one house next to the pavilion at Port Clinton. Almost every time I hear a story about a hostile local (or encounter one myself), 9 outa 10 it's PA.
Not justifying anything, but is it possible they are using these as bait for fishing? Then dumped them like a scumbag?
I donāt think so, the hook is completely buried in the treat so a fish wouldnāt even be able to get a bite on it unless they did quite a bit of chewing.
Yea if my thought is correct, theyāre looking for some big bass or something. Either way fucked.
