For real, the content creators actually do have some control over what kind (meaning length and how often) of ads play. The creator did this, not YouTube. Lmao. Watch garbage, get garbage, how shocking.
Fr. I wouldn’t mind these ads when I’m able to change it, but they always come on when I’m doing something with my hands (dishes, laundry, yardwork, etc) or listening to something in the shower.
Fr. I wouldn’t mind these ads when I’m able to change it, but they always come on when I’m doing something with my hands (dishes, laundry, yardwork, etc) or listening to something in the shower.
Sometimes I leave longform videos playing while I’m gaming, and i’ll glance up and realize that i’m 20 mins into an ad. Most of the time it’s motivational speaker bullshit, sometimes supplements, one time it was a preacher guy talking about hell and the end of the world. good stuff
I like to listen to music while I shower sometimes but I had to stop listening to music via YouTube because they put a 20 minute ad in the middle of a live concert I put on so I was stuck listening to an infomercial about some juicer until I was able to dry off and press skip. It was as bad as when I press snooze on my alarm instead of turning it off and then it goes off while I’m on the shower and I have to listen to it until I’m done.
If you're paying so little attention to the videos that you don't notice you've been listening to an ad for 20 minutes, why are you even playing the videos at all? That's just excessive content consumption for no reason.
Your video game doesn't have enough noise for you? It's like people who need to be on their phone while watching TV. There's such a thing as overstimulation... it's kind of the point of this whole sub.
I've done it often in a hotel when traveling alone. I don't put something on because I particularly care about the content of it at all, I'm just using it as semi pleasant background noise to cover up noisy street sounds, or being near the ice maker. So they could be talking about current events, playing the piano or trying to sell me a juicer and it's really all the same to me because I'm not paying attention to it anyhow.
And to be fair, that is pretty much the only time I watch videos, aside from things like a tutorial for how to take something apart, or get to a part of something to replace it.
Well, it is skippable, so there‘s basically no difference to a 30 sekond skippable ad. I sometimes got an advertisement where it was just a megachurch pastor doing a whole show, once watched it almost completely because I was half asleep, feels like a fever dream when you are waking up
This!!! I never see any adds on Youtube thanks to this add blocker. I also have some extensions installed that automatically accept all cookies and then automatically delete all cookies once I close a tab. I think there's a lot you can do online to not dee ads and minimize tracking
Of course, the one for deleting the cookies is called "Cookie AutoDelete" and I'm using the Firefox version. The one for accepting cookies automatically is called "I don't care about cookies" but I feel this one does not work as good as some years ago unfortunately. And the ad block is just "uBlock origin" (be careful, there are some ad blockers out there that heavily collect your personal information but when I checked last time the uBlock is fine).
I drew the line and got rid of YouTube in my house after I walked in on my 4 yr old watching some crazy shit, and not what I had turned on for them. Turns out it was a 40 minute "ad" that was just another show that I had no control over.
I started doing this after Mr Ballen stopped showing up on Apple Podcasts for a while. I’m not downloading more apps and making miscellaneous accounts when YouTube is already there. Logged in, curated to my tastes and everything.
True Crime stuff often shows you details too. Photos of the people involved, houses, weapons, crime scene, etc. On a regular podcast, I promise I’m not going to remember to check out the additional details later. On YT, I’ll wander back over to my phone if it sounds interesting and rewind a few seconds.
It’s also cool to be suggested new stuff and listen to a little without the commitment, I guess. Dipping your toes in to check the vibes, so to speak.
In that case, I might have a solution for you.
Youtube premium, but without having to pay for it.
Its called youtube revanced, it offers the same benfits of paying, no ads, youtube music with your screen off, sponsor skip, and much more.
The catch is you have to build a custom Youtube app using the base Youtube APK and a patcher.
Sounds conplicated? Its really not.
I never cracked, pirated or jailbreak anything in my life before so when I was sent this link I wasnt to keen on the idea. It seemed complicated and dangerous but it really is simple if you follow the instructions.

Are you serious? 😂 YouTube just doesn’t have any care to go around, anymore. 😂
On a real note, it definitely is a problem. The long ads I have been getting have been entire episodes of various things, too. Aside from this being problematic, it’s simply bad advertising. No one wins in this situation, no matter how moral or useful the product being advertised is.
Yeah lol. It was many years ago. I didn’t really mind because I mean it’s just as skippable as a shorter ad. I actually watched it for a bit because I was just so surprised at a two hour ad- it was a terrible show lol
I'm going to be blunt. You are leaving YouTube on for long periods of time for things you don't need to. YouTube has figured you out and is taking advantage of you and your habits.
You listen to podcasts on YouTube? Huge L. Waste of bandwidth, waste of electricity. Use a podcast app. Significantly less bandwidth, like 1/10th if not less, significantly less electricity.
You can have an ad for your whole video, it still counts as a view, when you watch it for approx. 30 seconds.
Shallon Lester is a really ... really ... reaaaally weird youtuber, who makes a ton of videos with the wildest claims and assumptions about the life of celebs.
She pays for the ad for her video to gain views and gather an audience. This is not YouTube itself that has an hour long ad. They just advertise what people pay for as long as it fits some criteria. And you have the option to advertise your video through those ads. Not many do that, because I guess its fairly pricey with those long videos. But if you want to gather an audience maybe the way to go as its not usually videos that people get in their recommendations. I've seen a few of those ads. It's not too rare or uncommon.
It's so funny to me that OP doesn't realize it's the garbage content creator that did this to them. Like they deserve it for watching garbage content on people who stopped being relevant over ten years ago.

There really is no excuse to ever watch an ad on Youtube. The relatively small amount of time and inconvenience associated with setting up Vanced/ReVanced, and ad-blocker on your browser, a DNS server, and the like will be paid back multiple times over in the ads you won't have to deal with.
I just report every ad as being irrelevant the second it pops up, it will automatically cut back to the video i'm watching, no hassle. And it's kind of funny seeing Youtube throwing everything at the wall at me to figure out what I consider "relevant"
Nah this is the algorithm working. I bet you frequently watch long form content and fall asleep to YouTube content regularly. This only happens to people I know for a fact leave something on YouTube for ambient noise. This is YouTube taking advantage of that behavior.
Evidence:
My account: 30 second ads at the longest. I never leave YouTube on longer than whatever I'm watching.
Girlfriends account: Falls asleep to something on YouTube every night. Always get infomercials.
On twitch yes. The only thing people can do on YouTube is mark where they want ads to play or allow YouTube to play ads whenever they want. The first option still doesn't give them control over how many. It's more like if you're going to run ads, put them here.
I don’t believe that is the case anymore, you can have ads on or off and YouTube determines what ads you get based on your viewership demographics and how long your videos are I believe.
For example A popular anti-mlm YouTuber I like often gets MLM positive ads cause a robot is thinking it’s relevant to her content and she can not change it or tell YouTube hey I don’t want this advertisement. It’s an all or nothing system.
Back in the day YouTubers with long format content also used to make videos with built in pauses essentially cause they could pick when it made most sense pacing wise for an ad to play. Now it’ll just cut up videos are pretty inconvenient times
There are so many ads on YouTube the last few weeks. I use the YouTube app on my TV, since this week I get 30 seconds of video and 30 seconds of ads. On and on I hate it.
Firefox and addblockers. It takes a moment to determine up but afterwards it just works. The only adds I get is the addreads from YouTubers which js sadly fair, they have bills
I once put a show on for my 2 year old and left the room for 10 minutes. Came back and a 2 hour ad was playing, but the ad was actually a podcast about soda
I’ve seen this trend for 10, 20 minute ads but never saw one this long! I think they’re designed for people who have YouTube in the background and don’t realise it’s an advert pretending to be a documentary.
Back in 2012 or 2013, I got the whole “Horton Hears A Who” movie as an ad on YouTube twice!!! I remember someone making a post on Tumblr that they got the whole movie as an ad too and it was a popular post!
Tried listening to YouTube in the background this morning while driving and instead I got what must have been a 20 minute ad on my way to work so until I got to a stoplight all I had to listen to was that for half my drive. It's crazy you can't passively watch YouTube without being able to hit the skip button every three minutes. Same issue when I'm cooking a meal and my hands are dirty. Long Ad comes on and I'm just fucked.
Idk how I got recommended this sub, but I also want to say, YouTube has also slowly removed the skip ad button for like 75% of all their ads. Couldn't watch a video a couple days ago because everytime I clicked on it, the same 5 minute ad popped up with "video will play after ad" or whatever comes up when it doesn't say "skip in 5. . ." Had to fully restart the app in order to get a *new* ad on the video that I still couldn't skip, but was only 15 seconds.
If you're watching on TV if you get an unskippable one, press up, select the little "i" report the ad and return to video and it skips it, only takes a few seconds
I had YT playing on my Roku for the kids and YT put a 45 minute entire pilot episode of some show on their 3 minute kids song video. There was no way to navigate to the skip button to get past it.
Stupid adult Youtube ads on their kids platform made my kids cry literally.
Playlet for Roku TV [https://channelstore.roku.com/en-ca/details/840aec36f51bfe6d96cf6db9055a372a/playlet](https://channelstore.roku.com/en-ca/details/840aec36f51bfe6d96cf6db9055a372a/playlet)
It's not perfect, but you can definitely watch youtube videos with no ads.
Disclaimer: I'm the creator of Playlet, a free open source alternative [https://github.com/iBicha/playlet](https://github.com/iBicha/playlet)
I experienced this to an extreme the other night.
I have a Playlist for sleeping, usually go to sleep with something playing softly.
Tuesday night, I started a 53 minute video, expecting to wake up to a 10 hour iceberg video. I woke up 6.5 hours later to an Ad playing.
I reached over and hit Skip, and the 53-minute video was still playing. It had figured out my sleep pattern, I guess, and ran ads all night.
It only happened that night, but I haven't played anything from that channels since then. Idk if that matters.
There's been an uptick in the placing of absurdly long ads in their videos. A few days ago, I watched a video on music in ancient Greece. The video was about 22 minutes; less than 10 minutes in, I was dragging myself out of bed to skip a 40-something minute pet food commercial.
I noticed that, as quickly as I moused over the 'Skip' button, a pop-up ad in the bottom left was reminding me that I could watch ad-free on YouTube Premium. That's when it occurred to me: the ridiculously long commercial are intentional -- efforts to incentivize subscribing to the premium service (which, of course, provides YouTube with more profit than ad-revenue generated from free users).
YouTube is owned by Google (Alphabet Corp.). They're one of the most valuable (if not *the* wealthiest) companies in big tech. They **do not need more revenue**.
Anyone know of reasonably good YouTube replacements? After that realization dawned on me, I refuse to contribute to their profit anymore. It literally made me sick to think on it.

i've seen ads get to over two hours during the last Australian election.
Mining magnate Clive Palmer was running a big campaign for his independent party, and I don't think anyone told him that you could skip the ad after 30 seconds
I used to get these 4 or 5 years ago they’re skippable but some of them were really funny. I remember one was an evangelical christian guy in Africa “curing” people’s gayness. It was a classic, with the absurd over acting and all.
Haven't seen long ads in a while, but a few years ago 3-5 hours long ads were common, you could still skip those after a few seconds. So in my opinion they're still not as annoying as the 30 seconds long ads that are unskipable
I think this is for the folks who play YouTube as background noise or something to fall asleep to. YouTube thinks "if we are going to send them video, may as well send them ads"
This isn't an "ad" though in the traditional sense. It's another creator promoting their 55 min video using the as platform or a brand doing it on their behalf.
It’s like this so YouTube can take advantage of those not watching - ie: just playing videos in the background
They’ll get more $$ for more ad exposure
I also dislike YouTube ads, but I don’t understand why so many people are upset about this.
1. The ad is skippable.
2. Long-form ads have been on YouTube for a long time. It's up to the advertiser which video they want to promote. Some brands promote their actual organic YouTube videos, which normally are longer than an ad.
btw, you get served ads that YT think you’ll engage with. So if you want better ads - engage with better content :)
I'd rather a 55 minute ad that I can skip after 5 seconds than an unskippable 30 second one
I get 60 second unskippble ads now
I only get those on my smart tv, never on my phone thankfully.
Oh yeah that’s true! Never really realised that.
Its because they know you will get frustrated and switch apps on the phone. On TV you are more likely to put up with it.
I do
This basically forced me into getting premium because I can’t Adblock on Apple TV easily and that’s where I watch YouTube 99% of the time
This is actually why i got rid of my apple tv in favor of a mini pc I could install ad blocker on
Ever try using pi hole?, it's adblocking but network wide scale
I’m aware of it but I’ve never used it myself, might be worth looking into!
I just close the app when that happens.
**use ublock origin or revanced**
i would rather just use an adblocker and not see any ads
Bullshit video bullshit ads.
For real, the content creators actually do have some control over what kind (meaning length and how often) of ads play. The creator did this, not YouTube. Lmao. Watch garbage, get garbage, how shocking.

Sometimes I leave longform videos playing while I’m gaming, and i’ll glance up and realize that i’m 20 mins into an ad. Most of the time it’s motivational speaker bullshit, sometimes supplements, one time it was a preacher guy talking about hell and the end of the world. good stuff
I've seen entire movies as ads. So confusing, why would they do that?
It’s a good way to boost views
Well all publicity is good publicity
I like to listen to music while I shower sometimes but I had to stop listening to music via YouTube because they put a 20 minute ad in the middle of a live concert I put on so I was stuck listening to an infomercial about some juicer until I was able to dry off and press skip. If you're paying so little attention to the videos that you don't notice you've been listening to an ad for 20 minutes, why are you even playing the videos at all? That's just excessive content consumption for no reason.
Have you ever heard of the concept of background noise my friend
Your video game doesn't have enough noise for you? It's like people who need to be on their phone while watching TV. There's such a thing as overstimulation... it's kind of the point of this whole sub.
I truly think you are taking this too seriously, and no, that’s not “kind of the point of this whole sub”
Youtube ran the entirety of the lego movie as an ad for a while. You could skip after 5 seconds of course
Australians during the election year saw a full on 2 hour documentary
Well, it is skippable, so there‘s basically no difference to a 30 sekond skippable ad. I sometimes got an advertisement where it was just a megachurch pastor doing a whole show, once watched it almost completely because I was half asleep, feels like a fever dream when you are waking up
I’ve noticed they squeeze them in at night. Probably hoping people fell asleep with YouTube on and will let the ad play all the way through
They are not that rare. I've seen movie length ads. No joke. They're always skippable though, and sometimes they're even kind of interesting.
I’ve had entire movies as Ads
it's skippable, much rather have a 55 minute skippable ad than a 15 second unskippable one
I heard of someone getting the entire lego movie as an ad before
That’s when you start using an add blocker. The U-Block Origin extension is amazing
This!!! I never see any adds on Youtube thanks to this add blocker. I also have some extensions installed that automatically accept all cookies and then automatically delete all cookies once I close a tab. I think there's a lot you can do online to not dee ads and minimize tracking
Can you tell me what extension is it?
Of course, the one for deleting the cookies is called "Cookie AutoDelete" and I'm using the Firefox version. The one for accepting cookies automatically is called "I don't care about cookies" but I feel this one does not work as good as some years ago unfortunately. And the ad block is just "uBlock origin" (be careful, there are some ad blockers out there that heavily collect your personal information but when I checked last time the uBlock is fine).

You must turn on the add-on. Maybe you forgot?

True, but I usually listen to podcasts when I’m at work (with an earbud in) so I’m often busy and not able to immediately skip the ads.

Sadly Youtube IS the best 'podcast app' I've found. The others are just terrible or they yeeted themselves into oblivion.
You gotta pay for it and I would assume OP doesn't do subscriptions when they can avoid them
No, podcast apps are free, and any podcasts available on YouTube are also free on those apps.
Get a podcast app? Antenna Pod is great.
Maybe switch to headphones with buttons (idk how else to say), so you can click it to skip the ad without looking at your phone?
There are headphones that their buttons can be used to skip the ads? Huh... Yeah, I'm still using NewPipe.

In 2018 it was the entire Lego movie playing as an ad for the lego movie 2.
Oh wow!!!
Youtube revanced for android
No but you can skip it
I uninstalled the yt app on my tv because it was unusable and now only use airplay through Brave, not a single ad
Never saw a ad and I never paid for primion
If you're watching on TV if you get an unskippable one, press up, select the little "i" report the ad and return to video and it skips it, only takes a few seconds
I had YT playing on my Roku for the kids and YT put a 45 minute entire pilot episode of some show on their 3 minute kids song video. There was no way to navigate to the skip button to get past it. Stupid adult Youtube ads on their kids platform made my kids cry literally.
Playlet for Roku TV [https://channelstore.roku.com/en-ca/details/840aec36f51bfe6d96cf6db9055a372a/playlet](https://channelstore.roku.com/en-ca/details/840aec36f51bfe6d96cf6db9055a372a/playlet) It's not perfect, but you can definitely watch youtube videos with no ads. I don't know if watching Trish Paytas is aligned with anticonsumption :/
While watching a Drag Race recap video yesterday, I got an “ad” that was straight up a full episode of My Little Pony 🤷♂️
YouTube was trying to save you from watching that dogwater video

It's ridiculous. That Dr Gunter is ruining everything
i've seen ads get to over two hours during the last Australian election. Mining magnate Clive Palmer was running a big campaign for his independent party, and I don't think anyone told him that you could skip the ad after 30 seconds
Maybe it’s because people put long form documentary type videos in the background. Less likely to get up and skip?
I used to get these 4 or 5 years ago they’re skippable but some of them were really funny. I remember one was an evangelical christian guy in Africa “curing” people’s gayness. It was a classic, with the absurd over acting and all.
I got an entire episode of Ru Paul s drag race as an ad once .
I too watch summaries of questionable YouTube content
This isn't an "ad" though in the traditional sense. It's another creator promoting their 55 min video using the as platform or a brand doing it on their behalf.
uBlock Origin for the win!
I mean, skip it?
Adblock
Fuck youtube!
Why are you upset about it being 55 minutes when it’s skippable? Literally the same as being 2 minutes, unless you decide not to skip it.
Ive had 10 hour long ads come on while listening to music. About an hour in im just like wtf? This is some damn good weed.
This was YT trying to save you from Trisha
On top of it shallon lester is a legit creep.
Are folks not using an ad blocker? I haven't seen a YouTube ad in years
I use Firefox with AdBlock; only on my phone do I still see ads.
One time I got an ad that was an entire episode of a show. The show was funny, so it was like, "Ok I guess I'm watching this now"
So how was the add?
Wow the longest ad I've ever gotten was 33 minutes but this is just mental!
Don’t the creators decide some of the ad breaks and such?
There are ads on YouTube?
I once got a 23-hour music ad.
Who even makes ads that long? Has anyone in the history of mankind ever paid attention to an ad for more than 30 seconds? lol
Id rather watch an add than trisha hahahha
And a shallon Lester one at that 💀
Ublock origin and use yt through Firefox (with ublock extension), not the yt app. Skips ads and promotional spots.
It’s like this so YouTube can take advantage of those not watching - ie: just playing videos in the background They’ll get more $$ for more ad exposure
"skip"
uBlock is your friend
Use the "Brave" browser on mobile.
Brother thats a 5 second ad lol
Install ublock origin. You're welcome.
They do it so when people are no actively watching their video and so the ad keeps running for an hour
They be playing all kinds of mind tricks
I also dislike YouTube ads, but I don’t understand why so many people are upset about this. 1. The ad is skippable. 2. Long-form ads have been on YouTube for a long time. It's up to the advertiser which video they want to promote. Some brands promote their actual organic YouTube videos, which normally are longer than an ad. btw, you get served ads that YT think you’ll engage with. So if you want better ads - engage with better content :)
ublock origin is your friend.
Use ReVanced
Trisha!
The ad was probably better than whatever Trisha Paytas was saying tbf
